NEW : Local teen Emma Snow writes about various topics and events each month in the Grapevine. “A voice for the young people in our Community”.
Are we living our lives through a screen?
Think back to the last time you went to a concert or attended a wedding. How about the last time a friend achieved something incredible? Did you watch the moment through your eyes, or through your mobile phone screen? The last time I went to a concert, I remember seeing the majority of the audience holding up their mobile phones to capture the memory of seeing their favourite band. The last wedding I attended, all the guests, including myself, took hundreds of photos on our mobile phones. Now, don’t get me wrong, taking photos on a mobile phone and being able to view them instantly is an incredible advancement in technology. I am an avid photographer, constantly taking photos on my camera and phone of anything and everything. Most people take photos in order to re-live the memory. A photograph is a frozen moment. Some will take photos of their food if they go out for a meal with friends, and upload it to Instagram. Are photos being taken to look ‘cool’ and ‘show off ’ the experiences we have had? Photographs
18
capture a moment where time stands still. In the future we will be able to look back on what we did years ago? One psychologist, Linda Henkel argues that ‘If you take a photo of something, we are less likely to remember it than if we’d looked at it with our eyes and people rely on technology to remember for them. People rely on the camera to record the event, and so the person won’t attend the event fully themselves, leading to a negative impact on how the event is recalled’. This suggests that false memories of an event can be recalled just from one photo, and we don’t experience events in the way we should. I conducted an interview with new local band, Dear Victor, who will be playing on March 29th at The Maze, Nottingham. I asked the lead singer, Evan Jones, how he felt about people videoing their gig and watching them perform through their phone screens. ‘The music scene, is dominated by social media and one of the first things we did as a band, was set up a Facebook page, a Twitter and an Instagram account: you have got to embrace the technological aspects of new music.
New on the scene: local band Dear Victor. From left to right: Lewis French, Jake Mills, Evan Jones, Nathan Hill and Ben Smith.
So many artists are being discovered through the Internet. I think it’s something
Please mention Grapevine when responding to advertisements.
we should celebrate, but at the same time, when you’re on stage, you’re so engaged in the music that you’re playing, and it’s a shame if the audience don’t get to share that same first hand involvement with you, that you’ve prepared for them to have, because they are only watching and listening so they can watch it again later. So, it’s good and bad, but it’s important that people enjoy new music in their own way, there’s no right or wrong way of enjoying music’. Can we use technology to embrace experiences and keep them as a record of what we do? Yes, we can, but technology should be used in the correct way, and not take away the enjoyment of the moment. We should embrace events first hand through our own eyes, and not through a screen. We need to get the balance right. The next time you go to a wedding or a concert, think about experiencing the moment; but still take a selection of photos to remember it by. Article by Emma Snow.

Fresh Advice WHOLE OF MARKET MORTGAGE ADVICE HOW MUCH COULD YOU SAVE ON YOUR MORTGAGE?
In today's competitive mortgage market, many borrowers choose to switch their mortgage every few years in order to take advantage of the new rates on offer. Those that remain on the same deal for the full term of their loan could lose out on a range of potential benefits, not least the opportunity to reduce the total amount paid back, which could be a significant amount in some cases. In simple terms, remortgaging involves switching your current mortgage to a new deal, arranged either with your existing lender or with a new lender. If you're paying your lender's Standard Variable Rate (SVR), it's likely that you are able to secure a better rate on other available products. This could allow you to save money on your monthly repayments, or to repay your mortgage sooner. If you would like to discuss the potential saving available through remortgaging then call us today for your free initial mortgage consultation. Fresh Advice are also able to advise on and arrange the following products: • • • • •

March - April Garden - Get your lawn in shape After a winter of neglect, your lawn will benefit from a bit of TLC now. Start mowing once a week, beginning with the blades at the highest setting and gradually lowering them over the weeks. For a perfect finish, trim the lawn’s edges with long-handled shears or a grass trimmer. Bare or thin patches of grass can be thickened up by raking over the surface and then resowing. Finally, give the lawn a feed. It may contain weeds or moss, treat these at the same time with a weed, feed and mosskiller treatment. Start planting bulbs ready for Summer try to include: lilies, gladiolus, and dahlias. Most should be planted at three times the depth of the bulb, but check the recommendations on the packaging.
Mulch borders The most effective way of improving the soil in established borders is to mulch the surface with a 3cm-layer of organic matter, such as garden compost. It will also help to suppress weeds and trap moisture in the soil. 24

The importance of responsible tanning... There’s something distinctly appealing about lying in the warmth of the sun’s rays, relaxing and enjoying a well deserved break from the demands of our hectic lives. The thing is, apart from on holiday, our moments of idle relaxation can never be guaranteed to coincide with the best of British weather! So for the millions of us that love to tan, our options are to fake it or pop into a local salon for a course of indoor UV tanning. det Sunbed tanning has its detractors, which is built on a foundation of myth generated through well funded publicity campaigns and a spin on data. The bottom line is, if someone has a skin that can tan and has no other contra-indications to tanning, using a sunbed responsibly is a controlled way to tan. A photon of energy is the same whether it has come from the sun or a sunbed. It is without exception, over-exposure or burning that must be avoided, whether on a sunbed or in the sun, as it is the process of burning that will increase any risk of developing skin cancer, not responsible tanning. What is responsible tanning? Responsible tanning is a commitment from both you and your tanning salon. h A responsible tanning salon should have well maintained sunbeds which are 0.3 compliant, ensuring that tanning tubes are changed within the manufacturer timescales. They should regularly check the sunbeds to make sure that they are fully operational and be trained sufficiently to provide you with tanning advice when you need it. They should also ensure that the environment is clean and safe as well as providing you with suitable eyewear and have a range of lotions available to help you maximise your tan. tanne you should always make sure that you follow the instructions of the As a responsible tanner, tanning salon, wear the provided eye protection and not exceed your session length or number of sessions per year. Vitamin D Besides giving you a tan, the sun (and using a sunbed) can also help your body to produce Vitamin D which has been proven to have benefits to your body. Sunlight is the most effecti effective way for the body to manufacture Vitamin D. Yet in the UK and Ireland, our bodies can only manufacture Vitamin D from exposure to the sun during the months of May to October. Outside of these months, the sun is simply not strong enough. A session on a compliant sunbed is the equivalent minute for minute to the UV output of the mid-day Mediterranean sun - now who doesn’t fancy up to 12 minutes of that! Choosing a sunbed salon Always make sure you select a salon that is a member of The Sunbed Association as all of its member salons promote responsible tanning. Beautiful Feeling are proud to be members of The Sunbed Association and welcome a voice for the industry which helps to make indoor tanning safer. Give us a call on 0115 9222216 to talk through your tanning options or just pop in to see us.

Health and Well-Being Six nations fans who are over 50 can still emulate the UK's rugby heroes with all new Walking Rugby sessions on offer in Beeston, thanks to a partnership between Broxtowe Borough Council and Nottingham Casuals Rugby Club. Walking Rugby Walking Rugby is an adapted version of the game, including a few simple rules such as no contact, no running, no overhead passes and you can only hold onto the ball for 3 seconds. It's a brilliant way to get fit and healthy and socialise, whether you're a former played keen to get back in to the game or someone looking to try something new. The new Walking Rugby sessions come following the success of Walking Football, which has been running regular sessions in the Borough for 4 years. Nottingham Casual's Rugby Club Chairman, Lech Kluk, who has been working with Broxtowe Borough Council's Sport Development Team, Broxtowe Sport on the new sessions said: I think it's a great idea and we are looking forward to being a part of this. I think it's great that people are still being the opportunity to take part in rugby and it's been a big talking point. We are keen to interact with the local community and have already welcomed other sporting ventures and clubs such as Korfball and Archery into our facility and would love enquiries from others.

GLAUCOMA PATIENTS AT RISK FROM DOWNWARD YOGA STANCES
allow for modifications during the practice of yoga."
‘Downward-facing dog’ and three other head-down yoga positions raise eye pressure to levels that can further exacerbate optic nerve damage in glaucoma patients, new research finds.
"While we encourage our patients to live active and healthy lifestyles, including physical exercise, certain types of activities, including push ups and lifting heavy weights, should be avoided by glaucoma patients due to the risk of increasing IOP and possibly damaging the optic nerve." Generally a healthy diet and healthier life style certainly reduces the risk of certain eye conditions.
The study, by researchers at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai, has found intraocular pressure rose in both glaucoma patients and healthy individuals doing the yoga poses. Increased intraocular pressure (IOP) is the most common risk factor for glaucoma. Minimising activities, such as weight-lifting, that cause raised pressure is the only way to prevent or delay the disease’s eventual irreversible blindness.

FISH (ex-Marilion frontman) is back and plays NOTTINGHAM – Rock City on Sunday 10th April 2016. Fish “Farewell to Childhood” UK Tour WIN TWO TICKETS FOR THE SHOW
FISH bids Farewell To Childhood 30th Anniversary Tour of ‘Misplaced Childhood’ Final shows announced due to re-scheduled European tour and public demand following a Sold-Out tour in December 2015. Scottish singer, songwriter and ex-Marillion frontman FISH has announced a handful of UK shows for Spring 2016 where he will play Marillion’s 1985 charttopping album Misplaced Childhood in full for the very last time, ahead of releasing his final-ever album later this year. The ‘Farewell To Childhood’ tour started in Sweden in June 2015 and took in a huge array of shows and festivals across Europe and even further afield, with a very special performance in Marrakech planned, before coming to the UK for two festivals – the legendary Cropredy in Cambridge on 14th August and the inaugural Midstock in Fish’s hometown of Dalkeith on 12th September. These shows will be the only chance to catch Fish playing the UK. The six British dates will begin at Newcastle’s O2 Academy on April 9th and will finish Bilston – Robin 2 on May 1st. Full details of the UK dates are listed below. The ‘Farewell To Childhood’ tour marks the 30th anniversary of Marillion’s career-defining, multiplatinum selling third album, which spawned the hit singles ‘Kayleigh’, ‘Lavender’ and ‘Heart Of
46
Lothian’, and follows the release of the most recent solo album from FISH - A Feast Of Consequences. A Feast Of Consequences was hugely acclaimed by critics and prompted FISH to reflect on his greatly influential time in music during the sold-out headline tour that surrounded its release. He came to the conclusion that he would retire from music to pursue other projects – but not without revisiting his most famous work, and creating one final album, which will be released later this year before FISH finally hangs up his microphone. “I started to consider my future and I came to the decision it was time for a major change in my life,” says FISH. “A plan was required that fulfilled all my needs and desires and gave me an exit strategy where I could have fun and give the fans of my music a celebration rather than a wake.” “The first part of the plan begins this year with my last performances of the 1985 album ‘Misplaced Childhood’ that catapulted Marillion and me to fame. It holds a lot of memories from a period that was very exciting and crammed with experiences both dark and magical. The lyrics on that album hold a very special meaning to me as they were written by a young man on the cusp of fame and dealt with a lot of personal issues. It was not only a breakthrough album for the band but also for me as an artist because I was finally discovering my own individual style as a lyricist and singer. To be performing it on its 30th anniversary has a lovely resonance.”

2015 saw FISH release seven re-mastered and repackaged solo albums. The first four – Sunsets On Empire (1996), Raingods With Zippos (1999), Fellini Days (2001) , Field Of Crows (2004) and Internal Exile (1991), Songs From The Mirror (1993) and Suits (1994). Each release of these albums will be the definitive 3CD versions containing demos, live recordings and rare exclusive material. Each album will be housed in a unique hardback book with 48 pages of sleeve notes, lyrics, artwork and photographs – packaging designed by the award winning Mark Wilkinson. With a musical history that spans over 30 years, and a live show that is hugely acclaimed and respected by critics, the ‘Farewell To Childhood’ tour will be one of the most un-missable episodes of FISH’s long and remarkable career. HAWKWIND coming to Nottingham – Rock City Tuesday 19th April 2016. WIN TWO TICKETS FOR THE SHOW
Space Rock Legends Hawkwind bring their psychedelic stage show to NOTTINGHAM – Rock City on Tuesday 19th April.
Founder Dave Brock is joined by longstanding band members Richard Chadwick, Mr Dibs, Tim Blake, Niall Hone and Dead Fred....the longest established Hawkwind line-up......... Join them on this not to be missed psychedelic extravaganza delivered with a glittering array of projections, dance, theatricals and special effects as only Hawkwind can ensure .. Hold on tight as the journey continues ..
The same year they played at the first Glastonbury Festival. These activities helped establish them as the people’s band, as well as being widely acknowledged with creating a brand new genre of music space-rock. Also in that year the band’s first single, Hurry on Sundown, was released followed by the self-titled debut album, HAWKWIND, 41 years on it remains a steady seller. By 1972, the bands popularity had grown to such an extent that they could now headline venues such as the famous Chalk Farm Roundhouse in London. A gig billed as the Greasy Truckers Party at this venue in February was to be forever etched into Hawkwind folklore, as it was at this show that their trademark single ‘Silver Machine’ was recorded. The track, which featured Lemmy on vocals, brought the band to the attention of the wider general public after it reached number two in the UK charts in the June of that year. The success of ‘Silver Machine’ financed their famous mind blowing themed tour, entitled Space Ritual. This show set the precedent for all future Hawkwind shows. The band’s wealth of creative talent, including contributions from the likes of sci-fi author Michael Moorcock, poet and visionary Bob Calvert, designer Barney Bubbles and lighting engineer Liquid Len created the world’s first truly multimedia touring roadshow.
HAWKWIND Their History: Hawkwind were formed in 1969, originally as Hawkwind Zoo by former London busker Dave Brock, although there have been numerous line-up changes throughout the years, he remains at the helm today and is known affectionately by many of the fans as the Captain of the ship. In 1970, the band appeared outside the perimeter fence of the Isle of Wight Festival as a protest to the admission charge where Jimi Hendrix was spotted in the audience.

The barrage of light, sound, dance and theatrics has since become a hallmark of all subsequent Hawkwind shows, making each gig a unique and spectacular event, rather than another standard rock concert . Following the Space Ritual UK tour, the band went on to continue the tour in the USA coinciding with the release of their acclaimed third album; DOREMI FASOL LATIDO, and then the live recording SPACE RITUAL ALIVE. In 1973, classic trained musician Simon House (electric violin) joined the band, and throughout the 70s, 80s and 90s, the

World famous science fiction author Michael Moorcock often wrote lyrics for Hawkwind as well as recording and appearing with them. After a drugs bust in USA in 1975, Lemmy left the band and went on to form MOTORHEAD . Throughout the 70’s, Hawkwind released a series of classic albums including: In Search Of Space, Doremi Fasol Latido, Space Ritual, Hall of the Mountain Grill, Warrior On The Edge Of Time, Astounding Sounds (Amazing Music), Quark Strangeness & Charm and PXR 5. In 1979, Dave Brock together with Huw Lloyd-Langton on lead guitar, Simon King on drums, Harvey Bainbridge on bass and former Gong keyboard player Tim Blake, recorded the album LIVE 79 which went straight into the top ten UK album chart. In 1980, Ginger Baker replaced Simon King on drums recording the classic, LEVITATION album. Showing its predecessor’s chart placing was no fluke this also went top 10. Between 1979 to 1985 the band’s singles and albums were never out of the national, independent and heavy metal charts, long players included Live 79, Levitation, Sonic Attack, Choose Your Masques, Church Of Hawkwind, Chronicle Of The Black Sword, Live Chronicles and Xenon Codex. 1986 saw the band headline the Reading Rock Festival, with former member Lemmy turning up to make a guest appearance, their performance was transmitted live on national BBC Radio 1, and later released as the FRIDAY ROCK SHOW SESSIONS
. Around this period, the band also began reaching out to a whole new audience of both fans and musicians, who in turn would embrace much of the Hawkwind sound and ethos whilst at the same time adding their own twist. This would see the start of whole dance movement and rave culture towards the end of the decade. Acts such as The Orb, Future Sound of London and later on The Chemical Brothers and Leftfield openly acknowledging Hawkwind s influence. Throughout the nineties, the band performed national and international tours and further officially sanctioned albums were released that included Space Bandits, Palace Springs, Electric Tepee, It Is the Business of the Future to be Dangerous, The Business Trip, Alien 4, Love In Space and Distant Horizons. Throughout their career the band also have continued to perform at numerous free concerts, most famously the STONEHENGE festival, and have supported many and various charities, including SHELTER, GREENPEACE, TRAVELLERS AID TRUST, BRAINSCAN, FREE TIBET CAMPAIGN, SAVE ENDANGERED SPECIES and SEA SHEPHERD CONSERVATION SOCIETY. More releases followed in 2002, including YULE RITUAL which was recorded live at the London Astoria the previous year in front of a sold out audience. In July, the band headlined their own threeday festival in Devon, HAWKFEST, featuring a host of space-rock and more mainstream bands. A double CD of festival highlights was released the following year.

In 2002, Hawkwind played Wembley Arena as special guests of Motorhead. Arthur Brown was once again on vocal duties, with Lemmy adding his unique bass and voice to a rousing version of Silver Machine, much to the delight of the audience. Come December and Hawkwind once more venture out on their annual pre Christmas tour with both Arthur Brown and Tim Blake coming along for the ride. In 2005 the band released studio album "TAKE ME TO YOUR LEADER". Assorted guests added to the rich tapestry of sounds on the album, these included 70s punk songstress Lena Lovich, the iconic Arthur Brown and for many the most surprising being Channel 5 TV presenter Matthew Wright, a long time fan of the band. This was followed up in 2006 with a new format dual disc TAKE ME TO YOUR FUTURE", which featured video on one side, music on the other. 2007 Dave Brock married long time partner Kris Tait in front of 1000 fans at their Hawkfest festival in Derbyshire UK. 2009 saw the band celebrating 40 years in the business playing to packed venues the length and breadth of the country with the highlights being a stunning headline set at the 2009 Beautiful Days festival in Devon which earned them a nomination at the UK festival awards followed by 2 sold out shows at the exclusive Porchester Halls in London, where they were introduced on stage by Iron Maiden s Bruce Dickinson. These shows marked the start of the 40th anniversary celebrations. In June 2010, Hawkwind were honoured with the MOJO MAVERICK AWARD to

mark their influence and longevity in the music business and also released a new studio album, BLOOD OF THE EARTH released on the summer solstice. Following a run of major festivals across Europe, Hawkwind return to the UK to mark both the end of their 40th anniversary celebrations, and also the 40 year anniversary of their iconic 1970 Isle of Wight appearance, by staging their own 3 day Hawkfest on the exact same site, the Hawkwind performance taking place exactly 40 years to the day of the original. Hawkwind finished off 2010 with their traditional pre Christmas tour of UK venues. Following headline slots at the Sweden Rock Festival and Hellfest in France, summer 2011 saw the recording of a new studio album, ONWARD , released in June 2012. November 2012, saw the release of two further albums. A Dave Brock solo album, LOOKING FOR LOVE IN THE LOST LAND OF DREAMS and Hawkwind Light Orchestra, "STELLAR VARIATIONS".In what was a first for Hawkwind, the current line up played the entire Warrior album in it's original sequence as part of their set. In 2013, Dave Brock received prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the Classic Prog awards at a ceremony in London's Kew Gardens. August 2015 - Completion of new solo album by Hawkwind leader Dave Brock entitled "BROCKWORLD" due for release November 2015. December 2015 saw Hawkwind play some Winter Solstice Christmas Party shows.

Book Review by Clare Lyons
Hide Her Name by Nadine Dorries I have to be honest and say this wasn’t for me, but I’m sure it will hit the spot for lots of people. I suspect it was just not the time for this particular subject matter… Dorries writes gritty novels about life in the streets of Liverpool, and this book is from The Four Streets Trilogy - it’s possible that if I had read the rest of the trilogy there would have been the justice lacking in this one book. A Catholic priest has been killed, who turns out to be part of a paedophile ring – one of his victims is pregnant and the story covers both her personal situation and that of the murder investigation. It’s a well written book, a bit too much detail for me, but strong characters. What I found unsatisfying at the end was the lack of comupence that the ‘bad’ characters receive. This may well be resolved in other books, but as I had found it uncomfortable reading as well as a frustrating storyline I haven’t ventured to the rest. If you enjoy this, Dorries has also written The Oaklands Manor Trilogy, as well as many other romance novels. Children‛s Choice Hedgehugs – Hopping Hot by Lucy Tapper and Steve Wilson We absolutely adore Hattie and Horace, this is the third book about their wonderful friendship, and it’s a good as ever. This time the pair would really love to hop like a grasshopper, but they get far too hot and try lots of different options for cooling down. Of course the perfect solution happens quite by accident which is how lots of inventions get made. The illustrations are beautiful and the simplicity of the story appeals to a wide range of ages. It prompted discussions about how to have fun, different animals that hop and a hopping competition the next day… www.mrsaverageevaluates.wordpress.com

BROXTOWE BUILDING CONTROL MOVES TO EREWASH BUILDING CONTROL SERVICES provided by Broxtowe Borough Council has moved to Erewash Borough Council today (23rd November) as part of a new partnership between the two authorities to provide enhanced services. Whether you are a professional with years of experience or building an extension for the first time, Building Control will be an important part of helping to complete the project successfully and on time. Safety in and around buildings is of prime concern and the Building Control service helps make sure that your building project complies with building regulations, ensuring that standards are in place to protect you and anyone living or working in and around the building. Councillor Phillip Owen, Portfolio Holder for Strategic Planning at Broxtowe Borough Council, said: “Meeting Building Regulations is extremely important to ensure that an acceptable standard of health and safety is achieved for people in and around buildings. This new partnership will be a new opportunity for both Council’s to improve the services they already provide to help ensure that customers get their building projects completed to their satisfaction.” For more information, please contact Erewash Borough Council on 0115 907 2221, email buildingcontrol@erewash.gov.uk or visit www.erewash.gov.uk To advertise call 07854 990608 or visit our website www.beechpublications.co.uk
