Film Review La La Land

This fanciful, theatrical musical has been dominating

the award ceremonies; but is it worth making a song and dance about? Set in modern day Hollywood, this film uses the typical 50s musical format and the costumes are subtly classic, to echo this by-gone era. Mia (Emma Stone), an aspiring actress working in a coffee shop and attending unsuccessful auditions, is thrown by fate into a love story with Seb (Ryan Gosling), a pianist with a passion for jazz. There are 3 love affairs battling each other throughout the film; Mia’s love for acting, Seb’s love for jazz, and their love for each other. The film opens on a very cheesy, over the top musical number, which is excellently executed but a bit unnecessary as it doesn’t fit in with the tone of the movie as a whole. In Moulin Rouge-style surrealism, there are a couple of spontaneous moments where the protagonists can magically float among the stars during a musical number, which is metaphorically beautiful but isn’t to everyone’s taste. Emma Stone seems to play the same character in every film, a quick witted, sharptongued girl who is slightly isolated from her stereotypical peers. This film is no different but she really kicks it up a notch in a particularly exposing solo performance; she reels you in and leaves you filled to the brim with emotion. Ryan Gosling essentially plays the same character as in The Notebook; a cheeky strong willed man who thrives in a tear-jerker film. They both play to their strengths magnificently and although predictable, they give the audience what they want. The cinematography is beautiful, every shot is like a piece of art. The camera glides the audience through the centre of the dance numbers, fully immersing them in the action and emotion. It is heartbreakingly romantic, absolutely mesmerising and profound. If your heart is made of stone, Emma and Ryan will make it weep.

Local teen Emma Snow writes about various topics and events each month in the Grapevine. “A voice for the young people in our Community”. Millennials You’re probably wondering what a millennial is. It sounds like an alien species. You could be right there! Many people don’t understand millennials because we are a different generation; the first generation to fully embrace new technology. The name ‘millennial’ is given to those born around 1984 onwards. What exactly are the problems with millennials? Well, we are the generation who are deemed hard to manage, narcissistic, unfocused and lazy. We apparently confound leadership. We grew up this way due to ‘failed parenting’ and because we were told we can have anything we want, just because we want it. Things like getting a reward even if you didn’t finish first, so that we wouldn’t feel discouraged. This has resulted in us not knowing how to work, for example, in businesses. Social media such as Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat hasn’t helped either and is a whole different issue. We are so good at putting filters on our lives! Not only that, but using social media makes us feel good. When you receive a text message or receive 100 likes on an Instagram photo, it improves your

wellbeing. This is because it releases a chemical in your brain called dopamine, a chemical that is highly addictive and one that is also released when you gamble, smoke or drink alcohol. We want more of it. We then become addicted to social media where we need constant approval from our online ‘friends’. If our likes start to dwindle, or our followers start to decrease on Twitter, we get worried. We start to ask ourselves questions. What did I do? Am I not cool anymore? Does no one like me? So now, there is a problem. In workplaces, we have a new generation with lowered self-esteem, who want to give up after just a few weeks of starting a new job because they feel as though they aren’t making an impact. They aren’t gaining the instant gratification they would get from receiving likes on social media. The real world just doesn’t work like that. Of course, these are just sweeping generalisations. Take myself, as an example. Someone who uses social media every day, but for a different reason. I use social media to build myself as a brand and to promote my radio work, my writing or the latest interview I have carried out. It can become a tool, one that is very useful to create contacts and opportunities. But everything isn’t instant. Real life isn’t like the online world and I know that opportunities come with hard work.

Sometimes things don’t work out and if that happens, I know that I have to pick myself up and try again or work towards the next project. I am not the only one. I know many people around my age that use social media in the correct way. I know people who are working tirelessly to get the grades they need for university or their chosen career path. I know people who are working their way up businesses. I know people who are working hard. Not all millennials are ‘self-interested’ and ‘lazy’. But I also know people who don’t use social media in the correct ways. I know people who can’t leave their phones for just a few minutes. The point I am making is that not all millennials are the same. We have helped to shape a different world. There are many businesses today that have a Facebook account or a Twitter account, which is the new way to attract customers more effectively than ever before. You can’t deny that it is just millennials who are supposedly addicted to mobile phones. When you’re next on public transport, take a look around and I guarantee that most people will be glued to their phones, no matter what their age. Maybe we are a generation that not many understand but there have been generations before us where people haven’t understood them. The world wouldn’t change and develop if successive generations didn’t change things. Without change, the world would be a boring place and not progress.

Grown Ups Choice Florence and the Highwayman by Angela Rigley It’s always great to find a local author to support—and even better when the book

is great read as well This is a wonderfully fun and beautifully written period romance, but with a little more zing than Jane Austen. Florence is due to marry a great bore, but rather shockingly is kidnapped and has to fend off the attentions of a Highwayman… or is he? The characters are well developed and the story trots along at a good pace with humour and charm. Rigley is based in Derbyshire and a love for nature and our great countryside is also encapsulated in the book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, and have since started Nancie—which feels a little darker so far... I

Children’s Choice Letter to Pluto by Lou Treleaven

One for the older children this time, perhaps KS 1-2, this book is a series of letters from the lovely Jon here on Earth, to his intergalactic penpal Straxi— who is a GIRL… Jon isn’t really very keen on writing at all and certainly not to a strange alien, however his teacher Mrs Hall is quite definite. This is such a fun idea, and the letters are packed with pictures and extra information so it really doesn’t feel like you’re reading a whole big book. The creativity is really impressive and the story is very funny. Some of the language is quite complex, and we did read it together first so check some of the more unusual words and understanding. GRAPEVINE COMPETITION TO WIN TWO TICKETS to see legend WILKO JOHNSON Rock City on Friday 21st April 2017! 2017 - A dual celebration - The Wilko Johnson Band 30th Anniversary & Wilko Johnson's 70th Birthday. ‘I’m supposed to be dead!’. So said Wilko in a recent interview, having been diagnosed in late 2012 with terminal pancreatic cancer. But despite the doctors’ worst predictions he continued to perform and present himself with vigour and a new zest for life. In 2013, Wilko announced that, thanks to a second opinion and subsequent life-saving surgery, he was cancer-free. “Man, there’s nothing like being told you’re dying to make you feel alive.” The man from Canvey Island, who studied English at Newcastle University before doing a bit of travelling, could have been a retired teacher by now, sucking on a pipe and whittling away at his pension. But no, Wilko was lured into music by the dark magic spun by his first Telecaster, bought from a music store in Southend, Essex, soon after becoming the strutting, grimacing, six-string rhythmic powerhouse behind Lee Brilleaux in Dr Feelgood. Throughout the mid70s, Wilko duck-walked his way across countless stages and venues in the UK with Dr Feelgood in the vanguard of the pub rock movement, performing the gutsy down-to-earth rock and roll that was a welcome antidote to prog-rock. Heavily influenced by legendary guitarist Mick Green from ’60s rockers Johnny Kidd & The Pirates, Wilko employs a finger-style, chop-chord strumming action (the ‘stab’, as he describes it). This allows for chords and lead to be played at the same time, giving a fluency and a distinctive sound very unlike the cleaner swat of a pick. With this economic sound, coupled with that black-suited, scowling look, and the yards he covered across the stage pausing only to twist the guitar lead out from under his feet, Wilko became one of the guitar heroes of the era. His influence was felt in bands up and down the country, and later in the emergent punk revolution (Joe Strummer of the Clash bought a Tele after

Feelgood had four successful albums in Wilko’s time, then followed a busy creative period playing in an early incarnation of the Wilko Johnson Band, the Solid Senders, before he joined Ian Dury’s band The Blockheads, in 1980.All through the ’80s, ’90s and into the new millennium he continued to gig in the UK, Europe and Japan. But it was when Julien Temple’s award winning Oil City Confidential came out in 2009, with Wilko emerging as the film’s star, that the world once again sat up and paid attention to his extraordinary talent. His career took another twist in 2010, when he was offered an acting part in the hit series Game of Thrones, playing the role of mute executioner Ilyn Payne. He appeared in 4 episodes shown in 2011 and 2012. In the same year, Wilko and biographer Zoë Howe released the book ‘Wilko Johnson: Looking Back At Me’, a coffee-table book of Wilko’s favourite memories and images. The book was published by Cadiz. 2014 saw the release of the hit album ‘Going Back Home’, Wilko Johnson’s collaboration with Roger Daltrey which went to Number 3 in the UK album charts. The pair decided to work on the album together not just because they were both huge fans of Johnny Kidd and the Pirates, but because, as Wilko was still believed to be dying from cancer, it was believed that they’d

‘better get on with it’. Also on the album are Norman Watt-Roy and Dylan Howe, both members of the Wilko Johnson band, Steve ‘West’ Weston and Mick Talbot (Style Council). It was produced by Dave Eringa.In 2015, Wilko and Julien Temple teamed up again for the documentary The Ecstasy Of Wilko Johnson, a film which explored Wilko’s diagnosis of terminal cancer, and the unexpected reprieve that followed. The film would become quite the hit, captivating audiences whether they saw it on the big screen or on BBC 4, and earning a ‘Kermode’ award in 2016. Wilko’s new memoir, ‘Don’t You Leave Me Here’, was published in Spring 2016 via Little, Brown. Your child’s eyesight develops and matures between birth and the age of 9. During these years, it is essential that your child receives regular sight tests and any visual problems such as lazy eyes, squints, short-sightedness and long-sightedness are identified. Some schools do have a specialist screening service for children aged between 5 and 6 but at times this is too late in development pathway. The earlier any sight problems are picked up and treated the better the outcome will be – this will be important for example in the development of binocular vision and stereopsis – the ability to appreciate 3D. If there are problems and they are not picked up at an early age, the child may have permanently reduced vision in one or both eyes. If you have any concerns about your child’s eyes, or if there is a history of squint or lazy eye in the family, do not wait for the vision screening at school. Take your child to a local optometrist for a sight test. This is free under the NHS for children under 16. Your child does not have to be able to read or talk to have a sight test.

LIBERTY LEISURE WIN NOTTINGHAMSHIRE SPORTS AWARD Liberty Leisure are celebrating after winning Sporting Project of the Year at the Nottinghamshire Sports Awards for their ‘Broxtowe Girls Can’ campaign. Liberty Leisure’s Get Active Team picked up the award at the event on Wednesday 1st February from their campaign to inspire women across the Borough to get active. The campaign launched on International Women’s Day 2016 and thanks to funding through Sport Nottinghamshire’s Innovation Fund, consisted of a ten week programme of activities for women aged sixteen and over which was fully booked in just a few days. Twenty six women regularly attended the sessions where they improved their fitness, socialised and overcame their anxieties about their Dan Dickerson from Proludic, Frankie Freeman and body shape and size. Anna Smith-Clare from Liberty Leisure and Notts County players Scott Loach and Rob Milsom. The taster sessions included activities such as netball, archery and Clubbercise which were delivered by local clubs and groups. A number of the women who attended the programme joined some of the individual activity sessions once the programme had finished. The Get Active team are currently in the process of organising this year’s programme. East Midlands Flower Show is back - 1 & 2 July East Midlands Flower Show 2017 Following the success of the first East Midlands Flower Show at Newstead Abbey last year, the second one will be taking place in the beautiful abbey grounds on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd July. With show gardens, expert talks, stalls, local food and drink and much more, it promises to be even better than last year. Tickets are on sale now but children under 16 will be admitted free. A Message From Stapleford Community Group Please keep a look out as thieves have struck in Stapleford and stole tools from vans in the area. Two Makita radios, one Stihl saw, three impact drivers, one drill and one circular saw were stolen from a Ford van over night, and the doors were locked when the owner went to the vehicle and realised the tools had been stolen, this is why it is thought that thieves are using a Special Key which is widely available to purchase online. The key can open Ford vans, thieves can open the doors with the special key, steal the goods then lock the door afterwards. Councillor Richard MacRae has mentioned the use of such a special key at various meetings he attends and has made the Police fully aware of such a device, he has been made aware of several other such occasions when vans have apparently been broken into but the doors are still locked. A second van has also broken into overnight recently, as thieves completely removed the door lock to gain entry, this time Stihl chainsaw and a petrol blower were stolen. If anyone is offered such items please call 101 and report it to the Police asap. Of course keeping your van empty is always the best bet but unfortunately this is not always possible. Leek, Sweetcorn & Smoked Haddock Chowder Serves 2 -Prep Time 10 mins Cooking Time 25 mins Knob of Butter 100g of Smoked Pancetta 1/2 Leek finely sliced 500ml Milk 2 Medium Potatoes cut into small cubes 300g Frozen Smoked Haddock 140g Frozen Sweetcorn Black Pepper to taste Chopped Parsley to garnish Heat butter in a large saucepan Fry pancetta until lightly browned Add leeks cook until softened Pour over milk and stir through potatoes, bring to boil and simmer for 5 mins Add the haddock & leave to gently poach for 10 mins (it should be ready to break up into chunks) Add sweetcorn & cook for another 5 mins until fish is cooked and sweetcorn is defrosted Place into bowls & garnish with chopped parsley - serve with crusty fresh bread to soak up any liquid Simple - but very tasty dish !! For the ﬁrst time in its 30 year history, Treetops Hospice Care is welcoming visitors to it,s grounds on Saturday 29 April as part of the popular National Garden Scheme. The National Garden Scheme is the country’s biggest annual celebration of gardening and invites garden owners to open their exceptional gardens to the public to raise money for good causes.Treetops Hospice Care provides nursing care and emotional support for adults, their families and carers across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire free of charge.On 29 April, from 10.30am to 4pm, the public will be able to visit the 12 acre site of woodland and grounds which has been developed over the last ten years taking into consideration the needs and fundraising activities of the hospice. The grounds boast thousands of daffodils and raised wheelchair walkways. Working really hard to get the grounds ready Spring at Treetops A team of twelve volunteers work twice a week, every week of the year, to ensure the grounds look their best for patients, visitors and staff. Sarah Butcher has led the ‘Garden Gang’ at the hospice for over 13 years as she explains:“Treetops supported my family eleven years ago when my husband Tony was terminally ill. I wanted to help them in return so I became a volunteer. “When I was asked to put together a group to tidy the front borders, I never in my wildest dreams did I think we would tame the 12 acre site! “Many of the original garden volunteers are still working here twice a week to this day and we have formed a great supportive team. They are working really hard to get the grounds ready and I would like to thank them all for their hard work. “Opening the garden and seeing it in the National Garden Scheme is like a dream come true as I never thought it would be possible to achieve the acceptable standard required.”

Admission is £3 per adult (free admission for children) and the entrance money goes to the National Garden Scheme which supports several national charities including Hospice UK. A message from Cllr.John Mcgrath

Hi everyone, Once again I am confused with what is happening in Stapleford. Aldi, the Post Office, now the Cliffehill Community Centre? As a Stapleford Councillor for 10 years many of us were told the Cliffehill centre was hardly used, then the good people who run it were told without any consultation that the lease will run out in 2018. Richard and myself had a meeting with those people and council officials, a petition has been started and I will ask the question at full council, what has gone off ? HS2, at first I was very excited at this prospect, but the more people I have met in recent months, I now have many concerns. The viaduct over Trowell, the area around Bessell Lane, traffic arrangements through Stapleford, compensation throughout urban areas. I have spoken to Anna's secretary and suggested a meeting with the councillors involved, the Trowell group and the government minister involved and people from HS2 of course to try and resolve our concerns. I am still trying to get information on The Post Office and Aldi. Myself and Richard had a productive meeting with the FA, Broxtowe officers and many officials who run children's football in the Stapleford and Trowell area to talk about a community centre/3G football hub on possibly Ilkeston Road recreation ground. National Trust Nottingham Centre, Summer 2017 Nottingham Centre members have plenty of activities to look forward to over the summer months, including excursions, walks and holidays. Attenborough Brownies make birthdays special Brownies in Attenborough have been busy packing up ‘birthday boxes’ for children whose cash-strapped families struggle to put on a birthday celebration. The 19 members of 4th Attenborough Brownie Unit – all aged between 7 and 10 - have packed eight shoe-boxes with party-themed goodies, raising over £100 to fund the project themselves by filling empty Smarties tubes with coins. Splitting into teams, the Brownies decided on the contents of each box and whether it would be for a boy or girl, making sure to include a cake tin, cake mix and icing. ‘It was a really useful exercise in working out how far their money would go and how to shop responsibly in our local supermarket,’ says Brownie Leader Sarah Cooke. The girls also made birthday cards and decorated the boxes. The Brownies’ birthday boxes have now been delivered to the food bank at the Haven Centre on Wadsworth Road in Stapleford, from where they will be distributed to local families. ‘

Services for domestic abuse victims gets £20m funding boost 76 projects across the country will get funding to support domestic violence victims including £100k for Nottingham. Projects across the country are to receive a share of £20m to support victims of domestic abuse, creating more than 2,200 new bed spaces in refuges. The funding will be shared by 76 projects that have committed to working across local authority boundaries and with other partners to improve domestic violence services. Communities secretary Sajid Javid said: ‘Domestic abuse is a devastating crime that all too often remains hidden. That’s why we’re determined that no victim will be turned away from the help they need, at the time they need it. ‘This significant investment shows our clear commitment to supporting and strengthening a resilient network of refuge services across the country, with further specialist support to help victims go on to rebuild their lives.’ As well as providing safe accommodation, the funding will also be used to provide further access to education, employment and life skills training. 72

DROP IN LEGAL SURGERY FOR DOMESTIC ABUSE FREE DROP IN LEGAL SURGERIES will be on offer for women who live in North Broxtowe and Stapleford, to access free legal information and advice in cases of domestic violence and abuse. Thanks to a partnership between Broxtowe Women’s Project and Nelsons Solicitors, family law specialist’s sessions will take place every other Wednesday starting on 4th May from 9.30am – 2.30pm. The sessions will offer: A private, safe space to talk through their concerns A chance to find out more about the legal options available to them An opportunity to obtain free legal advice in an emergency situation, in the time of a crisis Free impartial legal advice on a range of civil matters Many of the women who Broxtowe Women’s Project supports have a number of complex issues. This might mean they find it easier to remain in an abusive relationship. The sessions aim to make legal advice and support more accessible and to encourage them to move forward in their lives. The project is funded by the Police and Crime Commissioner for Priority Plus areas.
