THREE ICONS of Beeston have been given a lasting tribute in Beeston Town Centre as part of the Beeston Street Art Festival. The late actor Richard Beckinsale, the late singer/songwriter Edwin Starr, and fashion designer Sir Paul Smith were spray painted by international street artist Zabou to celebrate the influential creatives of Beeston. The street art on Station Road was commissioned by Broxtowe Borough Council as part of its Beeston Square Redevelopment project. The original funding was provided by Henry Boot plc. as part of Beeston Square Phase 1. The Council chose to use the remaining £8,179 of the fund for the street art. Deputy Leader, Councillor Mel Crow said, “The street art has been a real talking point in Beeston and I’m delighted with the fantastic response to it. I think anyone who sees it will agree that it is visually stunning and Zabou has done the town proud. Together with the rest of the street art which has been completed as part of the Street Art Festival, we have showcased the creativity that Beeston is known for and I’d like to thank the many local people who helped make it happen.” Jeanie Barton, Organiser of the Beeston Street Art Festival Team, said, “After organising the inaugural Beeston Street Art festival in June I was delighted
20
Broxtowe Council voted to spend their remaining Henry Boot Art Fund on commissioning the wall. Zabou has created a massive mind-blowing mural featuring our most famous local creatives. Crowds have been gathering already and Kate Beckinsale shared a progress shot on Instagram praising the work and Beeston. I’m delighted the art is already such a huge attraction for my home town.” Zabou said, “It’s always amazing to have very positive feedback and I think the celebrities are speaking to a lot of people because they’re really loved around here, some people are emotional and it reminds them of their childhood. It’s really nice. This is my last really big mural for the year, as I’ve been nonstop travelling and painting for the last three months. So I’m looking forward to my bed. I won’t be able to rest too much though as the next thing for me is a group show at the Saatchi Gallery in London in December so I’ve got to prepare for that.” The redevelopment of Beeston Square began in 2013 and work on Phase 2, which includes 120 new homes, a cinema and a number of new food and drink outlets, is set to begin in 2019. Arctic Cabins… The Perfect All-Year-Round Garden Escape
Owning an Arctic Cabins BBQ Hut means you can enjoy your garden 365 days a year, whatever the weather! Many of our owners find they use their cabins for a multitude of reasons, from the obvious BBQ parties, to gatherings with friends, a quiet place for the kids to do their homework, or somewhere for Mum & Dad to escape from the noise of the Xbox!! Some owners even use them for work! You may not have considered using your garden before at Christmas time but this is when our cabins become truly magical. From festive parties to waking up on Christmas morning with a cabin full of presents from Santa! Imagine watching the snow gently fall outside whilst sipping some warm mulled wine in front of a roaring fire… Christmas bliss! We have all 4 sizes of BBQ cabin on display at our Nottingham show village, from the small (7m2 cabin) up to the Extra large (17m2) version. With options like porches and side room extensions there will be no shortage of space for, well anything you like... even a bar! With over 15 years experience we are the number one BBQ cabin manufacturer in the UK, and our trademarked sloping walled design gives our cabins a unique silhouette and provides hours of comfort and extra space within. We manufacture each and every Arctic BBQ Cabin in our dedicated Derbyshire factory and install them onsite in a matter of hours. And with a no quibble 10 year manufacturer’s guarantee you’ll have peace of mind too.

GRAPEVINE COMPETITION WIN 2 TICKETS TO SEE SLADE & MUD 2 who are on at LEICESTER O2ACADEMY– ON SUNDAY 16TH DECEMBER 2018 45 years since the release of Merry Christmas Everybody!
SLADE - Without doubt one of the most exciting bands to come out of Great Britain in the past 30 years. With their unique blend of perfect pop-rock 'n' roll, outrageous flamboyance and pure fun, and no less than 23 Top-20 singles of which 6 were No-1 smash hits....plus 6 smash albums, Slade have become a firm favourite in the hearts of pop fans all over the world. SLADE'S chart career has spannedt hree decades and their enduring songs "Cum On Feel The Noize" and "Coz I Luv You" are still featured today in TV commercials for some of the Worlds biggest companies. SLADE first hit the road in 1966, touring throughout Great Britain and Europe and becoming a regular concert attraction. Joining forces with the former Animals bass guitarist and Jimi Hendrix Experience manager, Chas Chandler, Slade achieved their first chart hit in May 1971 with the Bobby Marchan song "Get Down And Get With It" then,
34
released in October of the same year "Coz I Luv You" was the bands first No-1 and a huge hit across Europe. Throughout the seventies, Slade became one of Europe's biggest bands, touring and recording continually and making regular trips to America, Japan and other parts of the world. Slade's catalogue of hits are synonymous with the era:- "Take Me Bak 'Ome", "Mama We'er All Crazee Now", "Cum On Feel The Noize", "Gudbye T' Jane", along with the many others provided a soundtrack to the Glam Generation and are still today, heavily featured on any retrospective of the time. At the beginning of the eighties, Slade were invited to appear at the Reading Rock Festival, a massive annual event which attracted over 100,000 people. They literally stole the show, giving some of the worlds biggest rock bands a serious run for their money whilst kindling new interest from a whole new audience. As result, the band signed a new record deal and unleashed the anthem "We'll Bring The House Down", which reached the Top 10 in the UK in January 1981. Slade were back! Not content to rest on their Glam laurels, Slade began forging a new path through the hugely influential British heavy rock scene. A second successful appearance at Castle Donington in 1981, before a crowd of over 200,0002 people, consolidated the bands position and paved the way for the single "Lock Up Your Daughters", and the album "Til Deaf Do Us Part". While Slade were busy in the UK releasing the massive hit "My Oh My"

to huge acclaim, LA metal band Quiet Riot were spreading the word Stateside with their version of "Cum On Feel The Noize", which proved so successful that they followed it up with "Mama We'er All Crazee Now". Throughout the rest of the eighties Slade toured and recorded due to them once again being a major force in British pop'n'rock. The early ninties saw the bands "Radio Wall Of Sound" hit the UK Top-30 and thereby give Slade a solid 20 year chart run! In 1993, due to the continual demand from around the world, founder Slade members Dave Hill and Don Powell decided to return to touring by playing a few select dates in Europe prior to embarking on what turned out to be a very successful two month tour of Australia.SLADE have continued to tour the world. They are firm favourites on the lucrative German festival scene and undertake an annual UK "Merry Christmas Everybody" tour in December. They also have a huge following of fans and regularly play concert dates in Russia, Poland, Belgium, Holland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, France and the Czech Republic. Led by founder members Dave Hill and Don Powell, the bands latest additions are ex Mud bass guitarist John Berry, frequently spied in the guise of the Big Issue seller in Eastenders, and new lead vocalist Mal McNulty. Mal has had an extensive career, he featured with Rockin Horse in the 70s, heavy rock band Golden Night, German rock band Hazzard, and he was a founder member of London fun-pub band Paddy Goes To Holyhead. Having formed The Wandering Crutchless with Tino Troy of
Preying Mantis, Bruce Bisland of Sweet and occasional guest Andy Scott, Mal joined Sweet in which he eventually became lead vocalist. Slade today is still one of the most exciting bands on the road, and their stage performance is a dynamic, powerful and exhilarating roller-coaster ride of pure unadulterated rock'n'roll. A date for your diary, Slade are back for Christmaaaas!

The sad passing of Les Gray left a massive void on the 70’s circuit, but now the sound and hits so well nurtured and performed by Les will continue courtesy of his estate and members of the band who played and performed alongside him. Syd Twynham became a professional musician in 1974 when he joined pop rock band Hector, with whom he toured extensively in the UK and Scandinavia. In 1976 he joined rock band Babe Ruth, with Ellie Hope (Ellie was the female singer featured on Oh boy) and Ray Knott. When Babe Ruth split Syd and other members formed Liquid Gold who went on to achieve world wide chart success with a string of hits, it was during this time that Syd first met Les Gray, Rob Davis, Ray Stiles and Dave Mount, collectively known as MUD. Syd joined the line-up of MUD in the early eighties playing alongside Les, Rob, Dave, and Ray, unfortunately due to his commitments with Liquid Gold who were by then at No.2 in the UK singles chart with “Dance Yourself Dizzy”, Syd had to take a break from MUD. In 1987 Syd re-joined Les with fellow Liquid Gold member Wole Rothe on drums and bassist John Berry, together as Les Gray’s Mud they toured all over the UK, Europe and as far as the Middle East. In 1998 Phil Wilson replaced Wole Rothe on drums and alongside Les, Syd and John this line up continued up until
36
Les Gray’s last performance in Belgium on 7th December 2002, after a lengthy illness sadly Les passed away on 21st February 2004. After consultation with original members and Les Gray’s estate it was decided to put the current line up together and tour as MUD II featuring members of Les Gray’s Mud. Phil Wilson’s first introduction to touring as a professional musician was a lengthy tour of Switzerland, he has played with a number of 60’s and 70’s bands including Brian Poole, Screaming Lord Sutch and Brian Connolly’s Sweet. Phil has made numerous appearances on TV both in the UK and Europe, he has also played many of the top venues including the NEC Arena, Wembley Arena, Hammersmith Apollo and the Sport Paleis in Antwerp. Phil is a powerhouse of a drummer whose style suits Mud’s music perfectly keeping that driving beat going and making people stomp their feet, they just can’t help it!Chris Savages’ relationship with Les Gray’s Mud spans over 18 years, during this time he played with Syd Twynham, John Berry and Wole Rothe in The Escorts. He was initially introduced to the music industry in the Mike Batt/ Abba production of Abracadabra, during which he worked alongside Elaine Paige and B A Robertson. He has worked extensively in the studio and is credited on many albums, including Spencer James from the Searchers and many other 60’s acts. In 1996 Chris joined the Glen Mitchell band who’s albums were produced by the legendary Chip Young (Elvis’s Producer) and reached No.1 in the country charts. During these times Chris has always continued to be involved in all things Mud! and is at

his happiest meditating in his Tigerskin creepers. Chris never fails to keep the band amused on countless long journeys and while sitting around in dressing rooms with his anecdotes and stories. Marc Michalski is the newest member of the band joining just before the 2005 Christmas tour, he has been playing bass guitar for over twenty years, working with the likes of Chris Andrews, Clive Bunker, (Jethro Tull, Blodwyn Pig) and Andy Pyle (Gary Moore, BB King, Paul McCartney). A lot of this time has been studio based, engineering and producing such acts as Bernie Marsden (of Whitesnake fame). His no nonsense solid bass playing style fits perfectly with Mud’s music. £110,000 IMPROVEMENTS UNVEILED AT LEYTON CRESCENT LOCAL CHILDREN were the first to try out the newly refurbished play area at Leyton Crescent when it was officially opened earlier this month. Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor Derek Burnett BEM joined children from Beeston Rylands Youth Club and other guests at the official opening, following £110,000 worth of improvements on the site. The improvements are part of the Council’s Pride in Parks scheme and include: · Large multi play unit for juniors · Multi play unit for toddlers · Traditional swings for junior and toddler · A big single point swing, trampoline, seesaw, balance beams and spring riders all set in an accessible rubber surface

As part of the event, the Youth Club provided free tea, coffee and squash with hot dogs, mushy peas and cakes. They also put on games and a tombola. As well as an £37k from the investment from the Council, funding has been boosted by £16k from Nottinghamshire County Council’s Supporting Local Communities Fund, £8k from United Living and £50k grant from WREN’S FCC Community Action Fund.“This is the first major improvement works at Leyton Crescent in over twenty years so we’re really excited to see the reaction from local children and their families as they get to try it out for the first time. Thank you especially to Beeston Rylands Junior School who provided support with the initial consultation for the project to help ensure that the new play area reflected what our local children wanted.” “Leyton Crescent is the 7th park to benefit from our Pride in Parks Scheme and I’m looking forward to seeing more improvements across the Borough over the next few months” said Councillor Shane Easom, Chair of the Leisure and Environment Committee. Cheryl Raynor, WREN’s local grant manager says: “It’s wonderful to see something we have funded open and ready to make such a difference to children in the local area. WREN is always happy to consider grant applications for projects that benefit local communities, and this is a great example of

what can be achieved.”. The Pride In Parks scheme will see £0.5 million invested in the Borough’s parks and open spaces over the next two years to ensure that all residents in Broxtowe have an opportunity to benefit from green space. GRAPEVINE COMPETITION
WIN 2 TICKETS TO SEE THE RED HOT CHILLI PIPERS who are pretty fantastic on the bagpipes play BIRMINGHAM – Town Hall on Thursday 29th November 2018! World Tour 2018 - RED HOT CHILLI PIPERS The most Famous Bagpipe Band in the World, ever! There has never been anything quite like The Red Hot Chilli Pipers, from their formation in 2002 and a cameo appearance at T in the Park in 2004 with the Darkness to opening the main stage in their own right in 2014. The past fifteen years has seen the Red Hot Chilli Pipers become the most famous bagpipe band on the planet…ever! Bagpipes with attitude, drums with a Scottish accent and a show that carries its own health warning! The bands achievements have reached incredible heights with their groundbreaking fusion of traditional Scottish music and rock/pop Anthems which they proudly call “Bagrock”. The Red Hot Chilli Pipers are a genuinely unique experience. The Chilli’s have never been more in demand for their infectious style of feel good music which appeals right across the age range to people all over the world. They have collected together an impressive group of musicians, dancers and singers from Scotland and further afield, many holding World Championship titles and all seriously good players with impressive credentials and qualifications. In 2014, The Chilli Pipers released a new live DVD and CD entitled `Live at the Lake`. In an explosive evening of entertainment captured on this live DVD and CD, The Red Hot Chilli Pipers recorded their most adventurous project to date, bringing 16 musicians and dancers across the Atlantic to perform at Milwaukee Irish Fest, the spiritual home of the band in the USA. They captured the unique and explosive power of the Chilli Pipers in one unforgettable evening by the shores of Lake Michigan. Tracks include .Insomnia, Gimme All Your Lovin', Thunderstruck, Everybody Dance Now, Amazing Grace, Fix You, Chasing Cars, Wake Me Up, Don’t Stop Believin and We Will Rock You. During the winter of 2015/2016 the Pipers recorded new tracks and released a new studio album – “Octane”. It represents a high energy, powerful, intense and hopefully inspiring album that the band aspired to create. “Octane” is a continued fusion of traditional tunes and rock classics, taking Bagrock to a whole new level which The Red Hot Chilli Pipers are proud to share with you! In 2018 The Red Hot Chilli Pipers will continue their World Tour with stops in the UK, USA, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland and many more, check the Band´s website for regular updates.

Letters to the Grapevine
A correction to the article “Stapleford Remembers” Thank you to Rev Jonathan Smithurst for sending in this information. Dear Christine, I read with interest your article The Chilwell Disaster 1st July 1918 under the heading “STAPLEFORD REMEMBERS” in the latest Aug-Sept Monthly issues of Grapevine NG9 and Wollaton & Bramcote (Issues 101-5, 114-5). It is very understandable and thought-provoking article which clearly picks up the trauma and emotional impact of the shell-filling factory disaster. However, I am afraid that the last sentence is incorrect. It was years before a memorial to those who died in the explosion was put up inside Chetwynd Barracks, but there has been a memorial in St Mary’s churchyard for much longer. Not long after the disaster, a wooden memorial cross was placed on the mass graves and unveiled and dedicated in July 1920. Over the years this deteriorated and a replacement memorial was vandalised in 1985. A small memorial with a blue plaque was unveiled on 1st July 2012. For the past three years a group from St Mary’s Church, Attenborough together with representatives from Chetwynd Barracks and other interested parties, worked together to plan a week-long programme of events to commemorate the centenary of the disaster. As part of this centenary commemoration a new memorial, incorporating a Christian cross and a replica sword, was built in the graveyard and the whole area upgraded in time for a special Commemoration service at St Mary’s on Sunday 1st July – 100 years to the day since the explosion. The penultimate sentence is also slightly misleading as it says “Many of those who died in the blast were put in a mass grave in Attenborough village church without being named.” In fact, no names are given because the remains (body parts) were unidentifiable and buried in 3 mass graves in Attenborough churchyard. In addition, the sword from the original memorial cross- previously housed in the Sergeant’s Mess at Chetwynd Barracks – was returned to St Mary’s within the Commemoration Service and is to be mounted within its glass case on an interior wall of the church. I notice that the items are to be Continued in the next issue of Grapevine and in the hope that you will include some reference to my above comments, I attach photographs of the original and new memorial as well as of the sword. Thank you and best wishes Jonathan Rev Jonathan Smithurst Vicar of Attenborough, St Mary the Virgin.

STAPLEFORD REMEMBERS. Stapleford Cemetery in World War 1 by the Stapleford and District History Society- Part 1. Editors note: A huge thank you to John Shaw for sending this information to Grapevine for our readers. Many of you may be decendants, or family members of these brave men who gave their lives for our country and will find this information useful. More will be printed over the next couple of months in The Grapevine. Stapleford cemetery was opened on the 28th July 1881. The land for the cemetery was generously paid for by Mr Joseph Fearfield who was a member of the Burial Board. The first interment was on the 30th July 1881, and was a Thomas Johnson, a married labourer, aged 68 of Stapleford. The ceremony was performed by Mr Henry Fletcher. Soldiers who fell in battle were buried near the site of their death with their comrades. This applied not only to the private soldier but also to the son of the Prime Minister. After WWI the majority of families of deceased soldiers would be unable to afford a visit to the various European war cemeteries, and would therefore remember their loved ones on family graves which they could visit more easily. Soldiers buried on home soil were the ones who were wounded and treated in English hospitals and later died of their wounds, or died from related illnesses such as TB. These would have stones if their relatives could afford the cost, or after the war the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) would erect a stone. If the strict criteria of the CWGC were not met then the deceased would remain in an unmarked grave as is the case for at least two discharged wounded soldiers in Stapleford. Within Stapleford Cemetery there are five CWGC burials from World War One. The headstone for J Hardy was only erected in October 2017. We also know that James Hall, a civilian who lived on Frederick Road in Stapleford, was killed by the Zeppelin L20 raid over Stanton on 31 January 1916, and lies in an unmarked plot. There are two with their own stones and two in unmarked graves. The others are mentioned on family graves, and of course there is the grave of V.C. Walter Parker who died in 1936. The following biographies are compiled from available information found in local newspapers of the time.

This information regarding Frederick Thornhill was sent in to the Grapevine by David Pearson of Stapleford. Thornhill, Frederick 27275, Sergeant; 16th Battalion Sherwood Foresters; died of wounds 10.10.1916 aged 34; buried Contay British Cemetery, France (plot 4; Row A, grave 16). Frederick was born in Stapleford 9.4.1883. He married Millicent Adkin at St. Helens Church on 26.7.1914. They lived at 43 Frederick Road, Stapleford. Their daughter, Hilda Margaret (my mother) was born on 15.1.1915. Frederick enlisted on 14.6.1915, and was soon promoted to Lance Corporal 10.8.1915, and Corporal 9.10.1915 (He may have previously served in the Marines and this may explain his rapid promotion). He was sent to France 30.3.1916 . Promoted to Sergeant on the battlefield 3.9.1916. My grandmother could not afford any stone so all she had was his “Dead Man’s Penny” to remember him by and she polished this every Friday; almost polished the inscription away; she also had his devotional book and the buttons off his uniform. She was awarded a pension of 25/5 a week to bring up her two children. Sorry don’t have any photos but still have the “Dead Man’s Penny”. Company Sergeant Major William George Domleo. William was born on 15 September 1883 in Normanton-onSoar, Leicestershire. He was the son of Tom and Alice Domleo of 2 Brookhill Street, Stapleford. At the age of 13, in 1896, he went to the Nottingham High School on a Nottts County Council Scholarship. On the 1911 census he is listed as a professional footballer lodging in Bury, Lancashire. He was an employee of the Refuge Assurance Company Limited prior to the war. William enlisted early in the war at Nottingham. In February 1915 he was a Lance Sergeant of “A” Company 7th Bn of the Sherwood Foresters. In April 1918 he was a Company Sergt Major fighting in the trenches near NeuveEglise, Belgium. He was caught in heavy shelling and was sadly killed on the 13 April 1919 at the age of 34. He was described as a “splendid warrant officer whose loss was severely felt in “D” Company”. William is buried at Wulverghen-Lindenhoek Road Military Cemetery in Belgium. He was awarded the Service Ribbon and Stripes, King of Belgium’s Croix de Guerre. In the Memorial Chapel of St Helen’s Church is a fine stained-glass window to William’s memory and he is also mentioned on a war memorial in Wilmslow, Cheshire as well as on the grave of his parents in Stapleford Cemetery (plot 32).

Private Leonard Crouch Leonard lived with his parents at Ewe Lamb Lane Cottage, Nottingham Road. He was employed at Whiteley Stevens & Co, lace manufacturers of Stapleford. He was a soldier in the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders and was killed on 1 January 1918 at Pegwell Bay between Deal and Ramsgate. With a number of other men, he was trying to remove a mine to safety when it exploded. Leonard was one of the 6 men killed and another 24 were injured. His body was returned to Stapleford where he was given a military funeral and buried in the Cemetery (plot 10). Private Elijah Henshaw Elijah was one of the first to enlist when the war broke out and joined the 12th Bn. of the Northumberland Fusiliers. During his training he contracted a chill and was sent to the Military Hospital at Tring. He was given the best medical attention from the hospital staff but unfortunately the chill rapidly developed into consumption, with the sad result that he died on Tuesday 27 April 1915 at the age of 23. His parents were allowed by the military authorities to be at his bedside during the last days of his illness and his body was brought back to Stapleford. Hundreds of people lined the way to the Cemetery to pay their last respects. The funeral procession was led by the Stapleford and Sandiacre Prize Band playing the “Dead March”, and three of Elijah’s brothers, who were also serving soldiers, followed the funeral procession. Elijah was buried in the Cemetery after a short service conducted by the Rev Crawford Hillis (plot 17). Gunner Joseph Bardill
Joseph was born in Stapleford in about 1880, one of 13 children and the fifth son of John and Mary Ann Bardill of 5, Wellington Street, Stapleford. Before the war he was a milk seller. Joseph enlisted in March 1916 in the Royal Garrison Artillery and after training went over to France where he was soon in the fighting line. Sadly he was hit by shell fire and died from his wounds on 6 August 1917, at the age of 37. He had three brothers also fighting for their country – Frank in France, Will in Egypt and Arthur still in training at the time of Joseph’s death. Another brother, Jack, had been killed on 29 May 1901 during the Boer War whilst serving in the Grenadier Guards. Joseph is buried in the New Military Cemetery, Poperinghe, Belgium. He and his brother Jack are also remembered on their father’s grave in Stapleford Cemetery (plot 38).

Gunner Harold Coomber
Harold was the son of Thomas Richard and Amelia Ruth Coomber of Hawthorne Cottage, Stapleford. Before the war he lived with his sister in Long Eaton and for five years he worked as a butcher in Long Eaton. He was a tall, well-built person – over 6 feet tall, and was of a cheerful personality and popular with his customers. He enlisted on 26 August 1914 and on 16 March 1915 he embarked for the Dardanelles, where he witnessed the great bombardment of Gallipoli. Harold was a Gunner with the Royal Horse Artillery. As a result of the terrible conditions the troops had to endure, he died from heart disease at the age of 23 on 15 September 1915. He is buried at the Lancashire Landing Cemetery in Turkey and is mentioned on a family grave in the Stapleford Cemetery (plot 45).
Other soldiers are buried in the Stapleford Cemetery and also mentioned on various family graves. A list of these can be found in the Key to Memorials. The Memorial Plaque- Dead Man’s Penny The Memorial Plaque was issued after the First World War to the next-of-kin of all British and Empire service personnel who were killed as a result of the war. The plaques (which could be described as large plaquettes) about 4.75 inches (120 mm) in diameter, were cast in bronze, and came to be known as the "Dead Man’s Penny", because of the similarity in appearance to the much smaller penny coin which itself had a diameter of only 1.215 inches (30.9 mm). 1,355,000 plaques were issued, which used a total of 450 tons of bronze, and continued to be issued into the 1930s to commemorate people who died as a consequence of the war.

Traditional Italian Ragu Bolognese Serves 4 500g (1 lb) fresh tagliatelle or 400g (14 oz) dried egg tagliatelle 60g (2 oz) Parmesan cheese, grated For the Ragu: 55g (1 ¾ oz) butter 55g (1 ¾ oz) minced prosciutto fat or pancetta 1 large carrot, finely chopped 1 celery stalk, finely chopped 1 onion, finely chopped 100g (3 ½ oz) minced lean veal or beef 100g (3 ½ oz) minced lean pork 1 glass of dry red wine A little beef or chicken stock Two cloves of garlic (optional) 3 tbsp tomato paste Salt and pepper Method: heat the butter in a large pan, add the prosciutto fat or pancetta, carrot, celery and onion and fry gently for about 10 minutes. Add the minced meats and stir with a wooden spoon to break them up into smaller chunks.Cook for about 15 minutes to brown the meat, then add the wine and bubble for a few minutes to allow the alcohol to evaporate little. Stir in a little stock to prevent the mixture sticking to the pan. Stir in the tomato paste and dilute with a few tablespoons of stock to give a sauce like consistency. Leave to simmer for 1 ½ hours, adding more stock if the mixture becomes dry. At the end of the cooking time, add a little more stock to obtain a smooth consistency. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Cook the tagliatelle in boiling salted water until al dente, then drain and mix with the sauce. Serve with the Parmesan cheese. 68

The Silver PawPrints Award recognises the team, which is made up of one full-time and two part-time Neighbourhood Wardens, and their work to ensure stray dog welfare during the collection and kennelling processes, proactive work to educate owners, and preventative measures to reduce both straying and long-term strays. The team, who have now received two Silver Awards and a Bronze Award, were assessed on a number of things including basic dog handling, health and safety, the treatment of injured or sick stray dogs, and their continued education programme to encourage responsible dog ownership. Chair of the Community Safety Committee, Councillor Jan Goold said: “The Neighbourhood Wardens do fantastic work to improve the welfare of stray dogs they find in the Borough. To achieve silver again this year is a credit to them. The average dog can live to 15 years and residents are being urged to think carefully before getting a pet to ensure they can provide it with a happy and healthy life. The RSPCA is the UK's largest animal welfare charity and their PawPrints awards, formerly known as the Community Animal Welfare Footprint awards (CAWFA), promotes and celebrates organisations in the public sector that have made the extra effort and gone beyond basic service requirements to ensure higher animal welfare standards in the animal welfare related services they provide. Anybody who would like to give a dog a new home can contact a local rescue centre such as Babbington Hall Rescue in Awsworth. For more information and to report incidents of stray dogs, dog fouling and dangerous dogs in Broxtowe Borough, visit our Stray Dogs webpage.
