Editors Note

Congratulations to Chris Gray, from Chilwell, who graduated from Lincoln University, with a First and is now freelancing at BBC Radio Sport and Lincs FM. Some time ago, whilst Chris was studying in the 6th form at school, I gave him the opportunity to write sport articles for the Grapevine, which he did exceptionally well, the purpose to gain experience for his future career. His mother wrote to me to inform me of his achievement and ended the letter by saying: “Your help gave him a huge helping hand in the right direction”. I’m pleased it did, well done Chris!

Care and Support at Home – What is Dementia? During the Dementia Workshops we regularly organise we talk about the definition and types of dementia as well causes, diagnosis, symptoms, behaviours and techniques to support those suffering from dementia. I have been contacted by a couple of people who have not been able to attend and have asked for relevant information and therefore over the next few articles I will try to summarise part of what we cover during the workshops. The strict medical definition of Dementia is; “a chronic or persistent disorder of the mental processes caused by brain disease or injury and marked by memory disorders, personality changes, and impaired reasoning”. In simple terms, Dementia is not a specific disease. It’s an overall term that describes a wide range of symptoms associated with a decline in memory or other thinking skills severe enough to reduce a person’s ability to perform everyday activities. There is currently at least 850,000 people living with Dementia in the UK and that number is expected to grow to 1million by 2025. Two thirds of people with Dementia are women and one in six people aged 80 or over have dementia. Over 60,000 deaths a year are directly attributable to dementia and the financial cost of dementia to the UK is £26 billion per annum. Only 44% of people suffering from dementia receive a diagnosis. There are many types of Dementia but some are more common than others. Although the different types of may overlap with Alzheimer’s disease, they are associated with distinct symptoms, patterns and distinguishing microscopic brain abnormalities. The most common types (and the % each affects within the overall dementia population) are listed below:

Alzheimer’s disease. This is the most common type dementia affecting around 67% and early symptoms include difficulty remembering names and recent events; apathy and depression. Vascular dementia. It affects around 16% and results from brain damage caused by multiple strokes. The symptoms overlap with Alzheimer’s disease, and memory loss may not be as apparent. Mixed dementias. Around 10% of the population. Although Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia, increasing evidence indicates that many people with dementia have brain abnormalities associated with more than one type of dementia. Lewy Body dementia. About 4% and it is characterised by physical tremors, stiffness and visual hallucinations. Frontotemporal dementia. About 2%. This type of dementia begins inside the forehead area of the brain. The typical symptoms include changes in personality and behaviour, and difficulty with language.

It is important to understand that Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias are different for each person. Cases can differ greatly from person to person. Primo Sule – primo.sule@homeinstead.co.uk - Tel: 0115 9222396

Message from Cllr. John McGrath Hi everyone, hope you are all feeling fine and looking forward to Christmas. I hope you will all have a good one. Wishing you a happy new year too. Here’s a look at what will hopefully be going off in Stapleford over the next few years. There has been plans put before your councillors to develop the police station area of the town. The plans look very exciting and a public viewing and consultation will be held at the Meeting Place early in the new year. Please come in and express your views. Dates to follow. There has been some objection to the new Aldi store which was planned to be built on Pinfold Lane, how do you feel?, let your Broxtowe and town councillors know. For the people of the Brookhill area and surrounding streets I am fed up with the negative response from Nottingham County Council, myself Councillor Darby and Councillor Mccrae will keep trying. Yellow lines on Bessell lane, parking on the junctions of Brookhill st, accidents waiting to happen. The Antill development is nearly complete, I will be setting up meetings with the owners and residents to air their concerns before it opens. We are also having meetings about the major new developments in the area, if permission granted, with talks about apprenticeships, education, and training which will benefit the people of our area. People from HS2 will be at the meeting place on 21st January 2016 from 7pm, along with Paddy Tipping please come and air your views. One thing all the councillors both borough and town are united in, is the closure of the cash offices. We have signed an open letter to our MP, to support us on this, I hope she can see sense, unlike the Conservative led council, who have put forward this with no plan or thought of how it will affect the vunerable of our borough. Come on ladies and gentlemen please come up with a workable alternative, its not all about what Westminster says, we were voted in by the people of Broxtowe. Cllr. John McGrath (Maggie)

Now is the time to plan your garden for next year. Write a list of ideas and work out a budget for items to purchase. Have a go at designing small projects, such as making a bird box, bird stand, think of areas where Garden Plan for 2016 the garden needs a small makeover, and plan to 1. Pond placea shrub, flowering tree, or group of perennials. 2. Wildlife 3. Shrubs Think of a contrasting colour scheme, (great inspiration can come from the internet), maybe have an area where you can plant perfumed plants to enjoy in the summer. Some people would love to plant vegetables, but not sure how or when, again the internet may have the ideas, or chat with your local garden centre (on days when they’re not too busy). A visit to the libary can be useful searching through the books and taking them home. On a decent day you may be able to visit your local allotment and have a chat with the experienced gardeners. People can get carried away with ideas, so it’s advisable to write everything down, even your plant pot arrangements will look impressive with a little thought beforehand. Wildlife in the garden is a real treat, think about encouraging wildlife by firstly planting plenty of flowers throughout the year which help provide nectar, pollen and shelter for bugs, which provide food for birds and beasts. Trees, shrubs and climbers may take a few years before they mature, but they will eventually become places for wildlife to shelter, breed and feed. If you’ve got a balcony or small garden, you can still encourage wildlife with a mix of pot-grown shrubs, climbers and dwarf trees. What you plant really depends on the amount of space you have, but if they produce flowers and fruit or berries, you can’t go far wrong. A few wildlife favourites are crab apple, rowan, hawthorn, privet, ivy and honeysuckle. In the Spring, discuss swopping seeds or plants with your neigbours, friends & family, this will save on cost. Why not have a go at cuttings throughout the year, (again do your research, and you’ll be rewarded in the end!). How about a pond? or even a small one. Adding a pond to your garden is one of the best ways to give nature a home. Even a small pond could attract dragonflies, frogs, pond-skaters and newts, as well as givingwildlife a place to drink and bathe. It’s best to line a big pond with heavy-duty polythene or butyl rubber. Create shallow edges to allow birds to bathe, hedgehogs to climb out, and frogs to spawn. And create a deep area, at least 45 cm (18 inches) in the middle – this deep area won’t freeze, so wildlifecan spend the winter in there safely. If you have a balcony or small garden, you can still help wildlife by making a mini pond. Get a plant tub or washing up bowl, then add gravel or small rocks then add to the bottom. Pile rocks on one side to help any animals climb in and out. And finally, add in native oxygenating plants, such as hornwort. Although it will freeze easily and will attract fewer bugs than a big pond, a minipond will still help wildlife.

Dear Local Retailer Have you heard about the New Year’s Day Duck Race in Toton? We’ve been running it annually and at the next race we’re celebrating 25 years, raising over £43,000 for Age UK, helping older people in our local area. We want to help promote our local businesses in the lead up to Christmas in the run up to our extra special 25th Duck Race. Interested in joining us and raising even more funds for AgeUK? We have two alternative ways you might get involved. CHOICE 1. We’re planning a Silver Duck Treasure Hunt launched at the Christmas light switch-ons in Beeston, Draycott, Long Eaton and Stapleford. Treasure Hunter’s would need to find the names of silver ducks in the windows of a limited number of local businesses, to enter a free prize draw with cash prizes for the first three correct entries drawn. It costs £25 for a silver duck for your window.

What will you get for this donation? • A silver duck for your window – You can even choose it’s name! • A second silver duck to race in our special corporate silver duck race on New Years’ Day. Could yours be the winning duck? • Increased footfall from all the treasure hunters searching for the name of your duck • Promotion for your business on the treasure hunt form distributed over a wide area - in Beeston and Chilwell, Draycott and Breaston, Long Eaton and Toton, Stapleford and Sandiacre. Forms will be available at the switch ons, online from our website, in local media and from Facebook and Twitter • Promotion for your business on our website, Facebook, Twitter stream and in local media (and we’d love you to share the duck and Duck Race information on yours!). • A certificate to display in your window showing you support the 25th Duck Race • The chance to support Age UK and older people in the local community

‘Silver Ducks Away 2016’ The 25th Annual Duck race will take place on Friday 1st January 2016 at Manor Park Toton. Starting at 2.00pm. 2016 will see an extra attraction for race goers. To celebrate our ‘Silver Jubilee’ we are incorporating a treasure hunt. Local businesses in Long Eaton, Sawley, Beeston, Chilwell,Stapleford, Breaston and Draycott have come on board to make this a really special event. They are sponsoring a silver duck which will be displayed somewhere on the premises, maybe in the window. The Silver Ducks will proudly display their name, chosen by the individual business and families will be invited to join the treasure hunt to spot and list all of the ducks names. We will be distributing the treasure hunt forms at all of the Christmas light switch on’s in the various areas. Forms can also be obtained by looking at our web site, duckracetoton. It’s free and will be great fun. Families will have the whole of December to find the ducks and the treasure hunt closing date is January 14th. The prizes are £50, £30and £20. On the day of the Duck Race we will be racing the ‘corporate’ ducks, those that businesses have sponsored and the winning business will receive a bottle of champagne. Angela Barnes, Duck race Co-ordinator said” The Duck Race is a great local tradition and celebrating our 25th race is a great milestone. We are grateful to all local business for getting on board and supporting the charity and to all residents who always support us by attending on the day. We are hoping for another successful day and look forward to seeing our regular supporters and new race goers who might be there for the first time” Further details: Angela Barnes 0115 917 6337 or Mob: 07973 753046

Tranquility Holistic Therapy Centre and

Studio on Chilwell High Road is ran by Kerrie Plowman, who gained her ITEC qualification in Holistic Therapies in 2004. She has over 10 years’ experience in treating clients, offering luxurious pampering treatments with a personal touch to nurture and revive you. Kerrie began by offering corporate massage at events and for businesses in 2005 and then rented therapy rooms within clinics in Nottingham and Beeston. Her client base grew rapidly and Kerrie moved into her own therapy centre in 2011 on Bramcote Avenue, Chilwell. After a very successful year, she moved to larger premises and created the Tranquility Holistic Therapy Centre and Studio, based in the Creative Corner on Chilwell High Road. This includes two therapy rooms for massage and treatments, a talking therapy room and a peaceful studio. Here you can experience Pilates, mindfulness, relaxation, baby massage, soap and bath bomb making classes and much more! All taught by dedicated, professional and inspirational teachers, creating a holistic approach to the wellbeing of the mind, body and spirit. Kerrie herself offers quality holistic treatments including: Organic chemical free organic facials, massage, lava shell and hot stone massage, Indian head massage, chocolate massage, Hopi ear candles, baby massage, soap and bath bomb making classes. Tranquility also has other great therapists, such as Julia Church, who specialises in remedial massage, pregnancy massage and nutritional advice, Danielle Kerslake and Kevin Kiang, who specialise in counseling along with Judith Mason, who is a hypnotherapist and counsellor, who runs popular Hypnotherapy relaxation classes. We have free parking available at the centre, and on the High Road too and some fabulous gift shops for that unique present, Created by Hand, Dotty Designs, Mish Mash,

and of course, the lovely Fusion café ran by AJ with amazing cakes and homemade food! Kerrie says “After experiencing many treatments myself, I recognise how much you are rushed in and out and not always made to feel special, which is disappointing and not how you want to feel after having a treatment. I always treat my clients how I would want to be treated, as an individual and made to feel special, which is the way it should be” Come and relax under our comfortable quilt and heated couch and let your problems drift away….. Talk about your problems to our counsellors eager to listen to you… Revitalize and regenerate with our great classes in our calming studio…. Why not do it all?…. Shop, a class, a treatment, then a drink and chill in the café for that real pampering YOU deserve. Make that commitment to look after yourself, after all if you don’t look after yourself, how can you look after everyone else? You only have one body! Nourish and treat it with the love and care it needs by nourishing your body, mind and soul at Tranquility. The Great Christmas Show We are excited to welcome you to Wollaton Hall, which over the festive period, will be magically transformed into a Christmas wonderland! Come and enjoy this beautiful, fairy-tale location over two weekends. This magical Christmas experience will see a host of food and drink stands around the grounds with additional masterclasses in gift wrapping, handmade Christmas gifts and celebrity bakers showing you how to bake the perfect seasonal cakes. Whiskey and wine tasting will also be available with a wide range of spirits for you to try before you buy. There will be outlets selling hot spiced mulled wine, cider and apple drinks. Our festive food and drink village will host a wondrous selection of festive feasts. Enjoy delicious crepes, a hog roast, gourmet burgers and a large selection of sweet treats like churros, donuts, fudge, chocolate and much more. And you can’t have a Christmas event without Santa, of course, so the big man himself will be attending both weekends of The Great Christmas Show. Santa will be joined by Mickey and Minnie Mouse along with a visit from the wonderful Anna, Else and Olaf. The Great Christmas Show also has 50 schools from around the region, attending to compete in a Christmas Carol Concert extravaganza over the two weekends. The schools will be part of a carol singing competition. There is a substantial host of prizes up for grabs, as well as the winning school choir having their very own single made and released into the music charts. All the schools will be performing their chosen Christmas Carol or Christmas song in front of a fantastic panel (to be announced at a later date). The competition is open for all ages from primary school right up to secondary school students. Anthony Carver-Smith, NCT Marketing Manager said: "As Nottingham's principal bus operator, we work closely with the city's schools - educating young people on how to use public transport in a respectable and responsible way through our TravelSafe programme. Children from many of these partner schools located across our network will be performing at The Great Christmas Show, so it's our privilege to show our support in this way. Wollaton Hall is very special to Nottingham and the perfect venue for such a fantastic event." X Factor winner, Sam Bailey, who is a big supporter of the two weekend festival of all things Christmas and musical, will be releasing a promotional video later in the year to support this event. There will also be a lot of coverage from our other big supporter, The Nottingham Post. Both weekends will be supporting 2 fantastic charities, Rainbows Hospice and Nottingham Hospitals Charity.

EASTWOOD COMMUNITY FOOTBALL CLUB CIC received a welcome boost after they secured funding to begin work on a brand new, state of the art 3G Pitch at their ground. Broxtowe Borough Council’s approved £110,000 of Section 106 contributions towards a new 3G Pitch at the ground. The Club, which took over operation of the football ground at Coronation Park in July 2014, was able to submit a bid to the FA and the Football Foundation for the development of a major “stadium” 3G pitch thanks to £110,000 of funding from Broxtowe Borough Council from Section 106 contribution. The pitch will be the first of its kind in Nottinghamshire. Broxtowe Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Councillor Jill Owen said: “Our congratulations go to the Community Football Club who have worked incredibly hard to bring the site back in to use for the local community over the past year in conjunction with the Council’s Leisure Team. We have been impressed with their commitment to the Borough and the new 3G pitch is an exciting addition to their existing facilities to help encourage more local people to stay fit and active.” Eastwood Community Football Club CIC has worked hard over the past year to develop the ground and engage with the local community to provide opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to play football. The ground currently has only one pitch and use it limited due to damage which could arise from over-use of the grass surface. The new 3G pitch would allow more people to use the facility and the development has been made possible by Broxtowe Borough Council beginning the development of a borough-wide Playing Pitch Strategy. The Section 106 monies have been received from developments at the former Castle College site and from Notts Community Housing Association as part of a development at The Island near Plumptre Way. For more information, please contact Broxtowe Borough Council on 0115 917 3626 or email leisure@broxtowe.gov.uk To advertise call 07854 990608 or visit our website www.beechpublications.co.uk GRAPEVINE-NG9 Nov MAIN 2015.indd 49

Where everyone's talking about nature! Beeston Wildlife Group, new talk season KAMCHATKA-THE REMOTEST PLACE ON EARTH? – A TALK BY TIM MELLING 14th December 2015, 7.30PM - 9.30PM Trent Vale Infants School, Trent Road, Beeston Rylands, Nottingham, NG9 1LP About the talk “Tim Melling will talk about his visit to the remote Siberian coast of Kamchatka, even further east than Japan. So the sun rises here, before it does in the land of the rising sun. The number and variety of seabirds and sea mammals of the North Pacific are legendary including many species that are rarely photographed. During the two week stay he encountered more bears than humans and witnessed first hand iconic species like Steller’s Sea Eagle and Spoonbilled Sandpiper on their nesting grounds. Many of the common songbirds in this area are birds which would draw a crowd of thousands if and when they appear in Britain. About the speaker Tim has worked in nature conservation all his life including the RSPB for the last 27 years. He has travelled all over the world leading trips to see wildlife, and taking the odd photograph along the way too. He has visited Beeston Wildlife Group on numerous occasions, probably more than ten, so you are in for a treat.

Note from Stapleford Councillors Stapleford Councillors have taken the decision to combine all Stapleford CATs into one. This means that the Stapleford North CAT organised for 8 October is now cancelled, this was partially due to Pastures Road Community Church not being available. It is planned that meetings will be held at different venues when they are available but Councillors felt that the Meeting Place is fairly central. All 6 Broxtowe Borough Councillors have been invited to attend the meetings. Councillors want to work together to serve Stapleford better. There will be 4 meetings held over the year, the dates for these are: Thursday 21st January 2016 · Thursday 21st January Thursday 21st April 2016 · Thursday 21st April Thursday 21st July 2016 · Thursday 21st July Thursday 20th October 2016 · Thursday 20th October Sent on behalf of Stapleford Councillors - Richard MacRae - Stapleford Community Group

Grapevine Tips - Not sure what to buy an elderly relative this year for Christmas? 1.Why not make a basket or box up with nice litttle luxury items that they will enjoy, it needn’t be expensive, could be food like: a jar of marmlade, some fancy cookies, shortbread, chutney and cheese biscuits etc. 2. If they shop at a local supermarket, why not give buy a gift card so they can use it to choose whatever they wish. 3. Buy them a yearly subscription to a magazine they may enjoy, such as gardening, sewing, woman’s magazines, ar mags etc, a lovely gift that they will look forward to receiving each month through the door. 4. You can buy warm throws from places like Dunelm which aren’t too expensive, they sell the Teddy type throws, soft and fluffy, ideal for the elderly to wrap around them whilst sitting. 5. Non slip bed socks are ideal for cold nights. 6. If eyesight is a problem, buy an audio book for them to listen too, great for passing the hours away. 7.Find out their birthdate (if unknown) and send off for a newspaper that was out on the day they were born - look on the internet. 8. If mobile, why not treat them to the Cinema, go with them and enjoy the new reclining seats they have now in places like Showcase Cinemas, parking is usually good, when was thelast time they went to see a film? 9.Photo frames are always welcome, and albums, usually photographs are mounted up in cupbards and drawers, an enyable way to spend an evening or afternoon, placing them in these. WHISKY GALORE! The Whisky industry is doing well – true to say, very well indeed. Exports have increased to almost £3bn., which represents around 25% of the UK’s food and drink being exported. Nearly half of all Scotland’s Whisky distilleries are situated on Speyside, near to banks of the river Spey. New emerging markets, such as China and India, are opening doors to accept Whisky nowadays, so there is somewhat of a turnaround for the Scotch Whisky industry. Also, in the USA, Malt Whisky sales are on the up. Of course, in some countries Scotch Whisky is something of a status symbol – so, as societies become more affluent then the need for products such as Whisky, grows. This gives off clear signs of a higher lifestyle status. Many thousands of people play their part in the production of Scotch Whisky, from farmers producing the barley, to a whole host of other trades, through coopers making the barrels and many others involved to make the finished product. Some 40,000 people, it is estimated, are involved with, or work for, the Scotch Whisky industry, to produce, through the various stages and distribute the final products. Investments are being made now to accommodate developments in countries such as China, India and Russia, as they develop over the next decades. For example, in China nowadays young people are enjoying Scotch Whisky very much indeed, going out together in small groups to western-style bars and as part of their order having a bottle of Scotch for the table. This enables them to share, amongst friends, with mixers over ice. This upmarket status trend is popular and looks set to continue growing for the foreseeable future. Millions of pounds are being spent on new warehouses. Distilleries are now re-opening, after being closed for several years. This is big business and the dawning of a new era. With a very wide spread of markets requiring Whisky nowadays, the industry does have to look to the future and make plans now for requirements in the years to come. With the making of Whisky going back in time many hundreds of years, the traditional process continues and is very much part of Scotland’s heritage in a big way. Technology, of course, nowadays, plays a big part, it has to, but the process of Whisky making is still traditional, as before. Some Whiskies are aged for many, many years and as you would expect, the cost of the product varies with the quality, age and rarity. The top export market for Blended Scotch Whisky is the USA., followed by Spain, France, Singapore, South Korea and Venezuela. Indeed, shipments of Blended Scotch Whisky to the USA alone exceed £300m annually. Single Malt Whiskies are gaining in popularity too and maintaining the supply to satisfy demand is all part of the job for the industry. It is always exciting to find a new and satisfying Whisky. I search for something which is fresh, with interest, having a good nose and a good flavour. The flavour and finish is hugely important and when located, duly noted and remembered.

As always, Enjoy!

Trevor Langley

We have already had interesting speakers, the most recent being a local person who spoke on the life of bees; a fascinating insight. We were also told of the worrying decline in bee numbers and encouraged to grow flowers in our gardens or tubs to help in the preservation of bees. In the months leading up to Christmas our speakers will include someone from the Red Cross, and a one time member of the local council. There is enough variation in both the type of groups at the U3A and the speakers’ subjects to be able to please everyone. As usual our monthly meetings are held in the Methodist Church on Eatons Road, Stapleford, on the first Wednesday of the month from 2-4pm. If you want to meet new people have some fun and take up a new interest come along and join us.

Should you wish to reserve a place please email healthandwellbeing@nottinghamcity.gov.uk Older People in Nottingham ‘Take A Seat’ Older citizens staged a ‘sit-in’ on the Old Market Square on 28 September 2015 to launch the AFN ‘Take A Seat’ initiative. They were raising awareness of how older people sometimes struggle to get out and about because there is not enough seating available for them to rest and catch their breath for a few minutes. In order to encourage more older people to venture out to their local shops, AFN is raising awareness with local businesses of the importance of offering a seat to an older person should they need it. Book Review by Clare Lyons One Wish in Manhattan by Mandy Baggot

I’ve never read a Christmas book before (only children’s ones!) so this was a new venture, and I was pleasantly surprised – and do feel quite festive now. It’s a lovely warm romance novel. The characters are appealing and well described, as are the various buildings and places that Hazel and Angel visit on their trip to New York. The story is interesting and although the ending is all wonderfully, predictably, happy there are some good twists and turns along the way. The relationships between parents and children is well explored in a range of ways and the dynamics are believeable even if some of the situations are a little far-fetched. There are many questions about the reality of the ending and what might happen next, but in the spirit of Christmas you don’t have to worry about the practicalities too much. Mandy Baggot is an award winning romantic fiction author, so if you like that sort of thing she has lots more titles to offer including Truly Madly Greekly if you need some sunshine.

Children’s Choice As Quiet as a Mouse by Karen Owen

This was a perfect book for our current family as we expect a baby to join us in December. Edgar the Elephant has to find a way to be more quiet around his new baby sister – which isn’t easy for an elephant. He goes to mouse school to learn how to walk and tiptoe quietly, with great success. It’s a very gentle book with simple but effective illustrations. It allows children to think about the impact of their behaviour on others and times when it’s ok to be noisy and times when it’s not. It perhaps could have done more to even out the responsibility as baby’s do cry and it’s not always their siblings fault!

Winter Warmer - Slow Cooker Beef Stew Ingredients (serves 4 people) 400g diced stewing beef 4 medium carrots 2 medium parsnips or half a turnip (or both) 1 small swede, chopped 3 leeks 1 onion chopped 4 medium potatoes 1 tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce 100g frozen peas (optional) 1 tbsp tomato purée 475ml of beef stock (Knorr stock cube or 2 xOXO cube) After cooking finish with chopped fresh parsley (optional) Method Turn slow cooker onto low heat setting Heat some oil in a frying pan and brown the beef, then quickly fry onions until caramelized Peel and chop quite chunky, carrots, parsnips, leeks, potato, swede and turnip. Make beef stock with Knorr stock cube and add 475 ml of cold water or 2 x beef Oxo cube with 475 ml of hot water, mix in Worcestershire sauce and tomato purée to stock. Add all ingredients to slow cooker and give it a stir. Pop on lid and cook for 6 hours on high or 8 hours on low. Serve on its own, or with crusty bread NOTE: Whether you’re making stew in a oven or slow cooker, it’s always a good idea to check on it during the last half-hour of cooking to make any last-minute adjustments. So if you’ve discovered that your beef stew is too watery, it’s not too late to alter. Most thickening techniques will not significantly alter the flavour of your good beef stew, while a few might make it even better. 1.You can thicken your beef stew by combining equal amounts of water and cornstarch in a bowl and then adding the mixture to the stew. Ensure that the cornstarch is completely dissolved first. As a thickening agent, cornstarch is doubly effective as flour, but give the stew time to simmer with the mixture. Alternatively, use arrowroot in the same manner as cornstarch. Arrowroot is more neutral-tasting than cornstarch, but it is more expensive, too. OR 2. Puree some of the stew with a blender and stir it back into the stew. Alternatively, puree some potatoes, vegetables or another ingredient that will complement and thicken the stew.

The consultation, which is available online at www.broxtowe.gov.uk/budgetconsultation asks residents to choose options for the future of service delivery including public conveniences, taking payments and discretionary services as well as providing an opportunity to give their ideas on how the Council can continue to offer high quality services whilst balancing the books. The consultation also asks residents to rate five different priorities and fourteen objectives which have been proposed as part of the new Corporate Plan 2016-20 to decide which they think are most important to make Broxtowe a great place to live, work and spend leisure time. Leader of Broxtowe Borough Council, Councillor Richard Jackson said: “ The Council needs to make decisions about its budget for 2016/17, as well as its new Corporate Plan to shape the work we do over the next four years. “The views of our residents are incredibly important to us and this consultation puts them at the heart of this process, enabling them to have their say on where they want us to spend and save their money and what our priorities should be for service delivery.” Since 2009/10 the Council’s net spending on services has fallen from £14.1m to £10.4m. Compared with other areas, Broxtowe receives lesser amounts of government grant, and has always tried to spend resources wisely and well but the government settlement for 2016/17 is very challenging and the Council must find new ways of saving money or delivering services in different ways. To complete the consultation, visit www.broxtowe.gov.uk/budgetconsultation. Paper copies are available on request or send your comments to finance@broxtowe.gov.uk and include “BUDGET COMMENTS” in the subject line or write to: Budget & Corporate Plan Consultation, Deputy Chief Executive, Council Offices, Foster Avenue, Beeston, Nottingham, NG9 1AB The consultation will be available until Monday 30th November. For more information about the consultation, please contact Broxtowe Borough Council on 0115 917 3228 or email finance@broxtowe.gov.uk

Our History:

Mission Statement:

The Trust has been working within the Community since 1995. At that time there was a well know homeless man, Kenny, sleeping rough in the area. One night he decided to bed down for the night in a large waste skip behind some shops. A group of thugs, seeing him bed down for the night, thought that it would be a laugh to see what his reaction might be if they set light to the skip while Kenny slept. Kenny was badly burned! He was admitted to the Q.M.C where his burns were treated. But he was still homeless. A local minister, putting his Christianity into practice, decided to invite Kenny to come and live with him when he was released from hospital. In due course a group of the minister’s parishioners came together and decided to set the original Trust up (originally called the Aspire Trust) and started to provide accommodation locally for anyone who was homeless. The Trust moved to its current location on Main Street in 2005 when its name changed to the Canaan Trust. The Trust has two houses in Long Eaton and provides accommodation for 12 homeless men from 16 years old to 60 years old. The Trust is a Christian Charity but is not affiliated to any particular Church or denomination.

How you can help:

It is committed to transparency, to fair access, diversity, inclusion as well as fair exit from its services. Key to the trust’s objectives being that each client is empowered and well informed. A client’s independence, individuality and diversity will be fully respected, encouraged and supported. At all times clients are fully consulted on the policies, procedures and day-to-day running of the service. The trust, through the support it provides, is dedicated to enabling each client to rebuild his life, enjoy, achieving the best he can achieve, to attain economic wellbeing, be healthy, stay safe and in all ways possible make a positive contribution. Ultimately, it seeks to enable all clients to successfully move on, maintain themselves in a positive independent manner and lead happier lives.

Homelessness:

Accommodation: Is the visible tip of the support and service which the Trust provides. Operating in a ‘person centred’ manner the Trust seeks to help each unique client to address and overcome the often complex issues which have contributed to his homelessness. No-one chooses to be homeless. Loosing ones job, family or relationship breakdown, physical or mental health issues are a few of the catalysts which can lead to an individual becoming homeless. Personal Support: Clients are mentored and counselled to help them re-build their lives helping each one to achieve the best he can achieve. Education: For many clients basic literacy and numeracy are significant barriers to their being able to lead independent lives. The Trust has invested heavily in its own education facility with tutors providing sessions in literacy, numeracy and I.T. In addition an extensive range of other courses are provided delivering a wide range of ‘Living Skills’ from personal hygiene, healthy eating (including cooking), budgeting, first aid, confidence building, job seeking and employment skills etc.

Helping our Local Homeless

It can happen to anyone!

Volunteer: The Trust values the time and skills which our volunteers provide. Volunteers help us with our Public Appeals helping during our charity collections; handing out leaflets; staffing stalls etc. Volunteers play an important part in our work supporting our clients. Volunteers help in our office, in our food bank, helping to maintain our houses, cooking for our residents, working within our education facility to name but a few of the ways in which you might be able and willing to help. Board of Trustees: our Trustees are volunteers. Would you be interested in becoming a Trustee?

Donors: The Trust is dependent on charitable donations to enable it to carry on its work. One-off donations are the life blood of the Trust donations from individuals, from groups, societies, organisations, schools, churches, and local businesses. Regular donations via Standing Orders, Justgiving or Localgiving enable the Trust to budget and plan ahead. Please contact us if you would like to discuss how you would like to help.

76

The Canaan Trust, an independent Christian charity, seeks to provide safe, secure, and healthy temporary accommodation for homeless men in the Borough of Erewash, Derbyshire, and in the Borough of Broxtowe, Nottinghamshire.

Our Work:

Homelessness is not an ‘IT’, it is a ‘THEY’ ‘They’ are fathers, sons, and brothers; ‘They’ are human beings; ‘They’ are judged, misjudged, ignored, and viewed with suspicion. ‘They’ have labels stuck to them – loser, waster, and scrounger, deserve their lot! ‘They’ rarely experience the label that says, fragile, handle with care, or the gentle approach that comes with it. If ‘They’ happen to pass your way remember ‘They’ have feelings too, and if misfortune should strike then ‘They’ may become ‘You’!

The Canaan Trust helps to rebuild lives. In parallel the Trust also saves the community money too. Through its intervention and the support which the Trust provides it helps to reduce the demand on the community’s Public Services – NHS Services at both G.P and A&E level, Police, Social Care and Local Authority. YOUR support is vital. The Trust depends on charitable donations to undertake its work. …….YOUR help does make a difference!

2015 marks 20 years of the Canaan Trust working in the Community assisting those who have become homeless. In many ways it is sad that we are still here! But it is a factthat the need has increased. The pressures of modern life, cut backs in other services, are having their impact resultingin the need for us not only to continue to exist but to enhance the level of support and care which we provide. It is also amazing that we are still here as in 2010 we lost the £125,000 funding which had previously been made available through the Supporting People Fund. The Trust has risen to each and every new challenge and in partnership with Erewash Borough Council and the Local Community has developed a proud reputation for the quality ofthe support and care which we provide for the vulnerable citizens of the Borough. In recognition of this the Trust is organising an informal celebration to mark our Anniversary. On Saturday 28th November, at 7.30pm in Risley Village Hall, we are going to hold A TRAMP’S SUPPER. It would be wonderful if you might consider joining us on this occasion and helping us celebrate this milestone. Tickets areavailable at £10 per person from the Trust’s Offices. Looking forward to having the opportunity to welcome In aid of you and enjoying a relaxed evening.
