To mark Anti-Slavery day on Saturday 18th October, Soroptimist International Nottingham held an awareness raising event in Arnold (Notts). Members of the public were given copies of an awareness raising quiz and a leaflet â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;How to spot the signs of modern slaveryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. They were asked to show their support by signing the Freedom Wall. The event was attended by Vernon Coaker MP, the MP for Gedling and by the Mayor of Gedling, Councillor Jenny Hollingsworth and her consort. Vernon Coaker has been a strong supporter of the Freedom Wall events since 2010 and Councillor Hollingsworth showed a keen interest in the event and in the aims of Soroptimism. Despite the abolition of slavery throughout the British Empire in 1833, there are an estimated 10 000 people in the UK living in conditions of slavery, and 30 million world-wide. Soroptimist International is a worldwide organisation of women who aim to improve the lifes of women and girls through awareness, advocacy and action. Nottingham and District Pre-Retirement News We are a local registered charity and have just celebrated our 47th year of operation. Not bad for a group who rely on volunteers and only have 2 part-timers! November in the Garden There's still time to plant daffodil bulbs and other spring flowering bulbs for a magnificent start to next years display. • Plant tulip bulbs now to prevent Tulip Fire infection. • Plant up a terracotta pot of hyacinth bulbs for a simple but stunning display next spring. • Plant out spring bedding displays of pansies, violas and primulas. • Start to plant bare-root roses - they can be planted any time between now and March. • Plant heathers, grasses and trailing ivy in pots for winter colour. • Now is the ideal time to plant a magnolia tree for a beautiful spring display. • Gather up fallen leaves from around the base of rose bushes which suﬀered from blackspot or rust this summer, to reduce the chance of infection next year. • Continue to lift dahlia tubers, begonias and gladiolus corms to store dry over the winter months. Remove the dead foliage before storing. • Cut back the yellowing foliage of herbaceous perennials, and lift and divide overcrowded clumps to maintain their vigour. • Before the birds eat them all, cut a few stems of holly with berries for making Christmas garlands. Stand them in a bucket of water in a sheltered spot where our feathered friends can't take them. •Divide mature clumps of rhubarb once they are dormant. • Now is a great time to prepare a perennial vegetable bed which can be planted up with rhubarb crowns and asparagus crowns. • Prepare a bed for planting autumn garlic. Improve heavy soils with organic matter before planting. • Now is an ideal time to invest in mushroom kits. It’s surprisingly easy to grow your own mushrooms. • Place a scaﬀold plank on the ground along the main access route into the plot to allow access without compacting the soil as you walk across it. • If you have access to fresh manure, now is the time to spread it across the surface of your vegetable beds to rot down over winter. • Build a raised bed to take the bending out of vegetable growing. • Stake top-heavy brassicas and draw up some soil around the base of the stem to prevent wind rocking the plant and causing damage to the roots. 24

Composting Don’t throw away your spent bedding plants, kitchen waste and other plant material – turn them into valuable compost for improving your soil and mulching your beds. Fallen tree leaves can be turned into leafmould – the perfect soil improver and mulch – especially for rhododendrons, azaleas and other woodland plants. Making good compost and leafmould is easy with compost bins, compost and leafmould accelerators, leaf rakes and collectors. Tender plants Tender plants won’t appreciate being kept out in the cold,so move them somewhere protected from frost and cold winds. Consider using cold frames and heaters to give protection and beat off the worst of the winter weather. Plants that are hardier but still sensitive to winter cold will appreciate a thick mulch of bark and even covering with fleece and bubble wrap in the coldest weather. To ad ver tise call

Care and Support at Home – Can 15-minute visits ever be long enough? At Home Instead we are dedicated and committed to providing the type of service people need and deserve when they seek support in their homes. With a minimum of 1 hour visits we ensure that not only the agreed and necessary “tasks” get done but as important, we ensure the individual receives adequate support to maintain and if possible, enhance their physical and mental health. It was therefore not a surprise to hear last week of a report published by the Leonard Cheshire charity that referred to 15-minute visits for home care as “disgraceful”. The report featured on BBC news and a number of other media organisations. This gave rise to a debate between care organisations, supporting the view expressed in the report that 15-minute visits are unacceptable and local authority representatives who argue there is a place for them. The Care minister Norman Lamb said that the government “can’t ban these short visits completely” because they are useful in some circumstances, such as when a carer visits to give someone medicine. The Association of Directors of Adult Social Services, which represents Local Authorities (not care managers as wrongly reported by the BBC), stated that short visits were “fully justified and fully adequate”. Interviews by the BBC included one with Tracey Currey, who was a care worker for two years but left because her employer would not let her do more than the “bare minimum” for Clients. She said: “There was usually a care plan in place telling you what was needed at each visit but there was always more to do. What is a carer to do on arriving for a 15-minute call to find the client soiled, confused and extremely distraught? What would the priorities be? To administer the medication as instructed, or to clean and change the client, or to make a hot drink and try to calm and reassure the client? All three in my book, but the present times do not allow for this.” We understand the pressure local authorities are under to reduce their budgets and, knowing that social care is one of the largest areas of spend, how much effort is focused on reducing the care bill.

We know that as part of this effort many “re-assessments” of needs are carried out resulting in care “packages” being squeezed to a bare minimum. Unfortunately we can also see the impact all this has on people who are fully dependent on daily care and support. I would challenge any Director of Social Care, the Care Minister or indeed, anybody who believes that 15-minute visits are acceptable, to spend 1 week delivering care and support. We could make it just mornings so that it is not too hard for them. They would then understand the reality of caring for people rather than just trying to get in and out of somebody’s home as quickly as possible. They would realise that 15 minutes is a very short time. You might be able to park nearby, get into the individual’s home without a wait, find where they are (sometimes not at home…), whether they are awake or asleep, etc. You then need to ensure that they are fine to take the medication (i.e. they are not ill, can swallow, etc.), and then dispense the correct medication from a bottle or blister pack, or other aid. Assuming the individual does not refuse (spits out meds or simply does not want to take them) you then need to record carefully what has been administered. All you need to do then is jump back in your car and put your foot down in order to get to the next person on your list! We will stick to our 1 hour visits. Book Review by Clare Lyons Moon Over Soho by Ben Aaronovitch This is the second in the ‘Rivers of London’ series, and if you’re looking for something a bit different then it’s for you. The book is essentially a detective story, but with the added twist of being based on the premise that magic is real. Peter Grant, the young policeman at the centre of the stories discovers that he can talk to ghosts, and is then taken under the wing of the enigmatic Nightingale, the last wizard in London who runs a very specialist and secret unit in the Met Police. The characters are beautifully described and very easy to imagine, the relationships with other ‘specialist’ individuals are completely beliveable and after reading the first book, suspending your disbelief happens automatically. The magical element naturally allows for more varied storylines, but the heart of the detective novel is still very well crafted and a really exciting story is still present. The characters are intriguing and the desire to read on to the next book is very strong as you want to learn more about them – there are currently five books in the series, so roll on those dark winter nights… Children’s Choice Pip and Posy and the Bedtime Frog by Axel Schelfﬂer Pip and Posy are well loved characters in our house, and although on the surface they are for toddlers, the simple language and ‘real’ situations mean that once children start to read on their own the books remain popular. Pip and Posy are great friends beautifully illustrated by the legendary Axel Schelffler (of Gruffalo fame), they appear in seven quite short books about very specific situations that most toddlers will have experienced. The Bedtime Frog, involves a sleep over with the trauma of a favourite toy having been forgotten – the pair then have to decide what to do as a suitable replacement. True friendship involves sacrifice and this tale is a great talking point about ‘favourite things’. www.letyourselfgrow.org

LETS BAKE!- CUSTARD TART A warming Chicken and Leek Pie for the cold evenings Ingredients For the shortcrust pastry 300g/10½oz plain flour, plus extra for flouring pinch salt 30g/1¼oz cold lard, cut into cubes (optional you can use all butter if you prefer) 85g/3oz cold butter, cut into cubes 2-3 tbsp cold water 1 free-range egg, beaten with a pinch of salt For the white sauce 30g/1¼oz butter 30g/1¼oz flour 600ml/1 pint milk 3 tbsp double cream 2 tsp Dijon mustard 1/3 chicken stock cube, crumbled For the ÿ lling 2 large leeks 30g/1½oz butter 3 Cox apples, cored and cut into large pieces 70g/2½ oz bacon lardons, or streaky bacon, diced 10 boneless chicken thighs, diced 1 bunch tarragon, leaves only (optional) freshly ground black pepper

Preparation method For the pastry, sift the flour and salt into a large mixing bowl. Add the lard and butter and, using your fingertips, rub the fat into the flour until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Lift the flour into the air as you do so, to get some air into the mixture and keep it cool. Add just enough cold water to form a dough and mix together with a palette knife. Then, using your hands, bring the dough together in the bowl. Turn it out onto a clean, floured work surface and knead briefly. Shape it into a flattened circle and wrap it in cling film. Chill in the fridge for at least 20 minutes. While the pastry is chilling, make the white sauce. Melt the butter in a heavy-bottomed pan. Add the flour and stir with a wooden spoon over a medium heat for a minute or two, being careful not to burn it. Add the milk all at once. Take off the heat and whisk the mixture with a balloon whisk. Once all the lumps are whisked in, place the pan back onto a medium heat and whisk continuously until the sauce comes to the boil and thickens.

Cook for another five minutes, stirring frequently with a wooden spoon. Add the double cream, mustard and the crumbled stock cube. Stir well, then allow to cool. For the filling, top and tail the leeks. Slice them into thick rings and wash thoroughly in a bowl of clean water, to remove any grit. Heat a heavy-bottomed pan and place the leeks into the hot pan. Add the butter. Add the apples to the pan with the leeks and cook for a few minutes. Add the bacon lardons and the chicken pieces to the pan and cook for a few minutes longer (the chicken will be only about two-thirds cooked at this stage). Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6. Place the chicken mixture into a pie dish. Sprinkle the tarragon leaves, if using, over the top. Season with freshly ground black pepper. Pour over the cooled white sauce. For the pastry top, allow the pastry to get up to room temperature. Lightly flour a clean board and roll out the pastry into a rectangle

about one-and-a-half times the size of the pie dish. With a knife, trim long, half-inch wide strips from the pastry. Use the trimmings to make an edge around the pie dish by brushing them with a bit of water (to help the pastry adhere) and placing them in a single layer around the outer edge of the pie dish. Using your rolling pin, lift the remaining pastry sheet and place it on top of the dish to form a lid. Trim around the edge of the pie dish with a knife to cut off the excess pastry, reserving the trimmings. Use your fingers and thumb to crimp the edges. Make a hole in the centre to allow the air to escape. Brush the top of the pastry with the beaten egg and salt wash. Use the reserved pastry trimmings to decorate the top. Place the pie on a baking tray and bake in the oven for 25-30 minutes until bubbling hot and golden. Serve while hot.

When you're not dancing the night away, you can relax in the comfortable and friendly atmosphere and enjoy the excellent food and refreshments. Tickets for the dance night are priced at £9 (£8 for Rolls-Royce Leisure Members) and are available on the door. Tony Farrell has been running a Big Band for over 20 years. His desire to play this great music came about a˛ er playing in a local youth band. When local bandleader Paul Du Cane was ÿ nishing he kindly donated some of his music library which served as a platform for Tony to start his own big band. Rehearsal premises were found, musician friends were eager to play, new arrangements were added and PA equipment was acquired. Eventually a full big band complement was achieved and the band started to perform in 1991. ˝ e line up of 4 Trumpets, 4 Trombones, 5 Saxes, Piano, Bass, Drums, and optional Guitar is in keeping with the traditional bands from the swing era. Along with top class singers Keyth Andrews, Craig and Tashaka Baumber, ˝ e Tony Farrell Big Band has been a winner with audiences everywhere.

New Year's Ball The band now plays a wide range of music for all types of events including conferences, weddings, 40’s theme nights, jazz concerts, Rat Pack nights etc. The band has appeared with some of UK ‘s top musicians including Alan Barnes, Bruce Adams and Nathan Bray, and has performed at many venues across the East Midlands and in recent years, as their fame has spread, across the country.
