Broxtowe Leisure Centres Help BBC Children in Need. Customers, members and staff at Bramcote Leisure Centre, Chilwell Olympia and Kimberley Leisure Centre have come together and raised an incredible £1730 for this year’s Children in Need. The three leisure centres arranged a week long programme of activities that’s seen participants bike, bounce, roll, dance and bake in this year’s charity appeal. At Bramcote Leisure Centre; the main event was the staff v member’s ‘Spin-A-Thon’. With both groups stepping up to the challenge it was a tightly contested battle with no-one sure of the eventual outcome. With a final burst of energy in the last hour the members pulled into the lead to triumph with an impressive 230.5 km cycled with staff coming in with 222 km. Refreshments were also on hand with a coffee and cake stall, a well-deserved treat to refuel after all the activity. It was the gymnastics that helped Chilwell Olympia raise their funds. Participants from the gymnastic and trampoline classes donated generously to be a part of the ambitious active targets. This included 5,000 trampoline landings and a mile of forward rolls to take place throughout the week. Targets were smashed with over 5,149 trampoline seat landings and more than a mile of forward rolls, 2,358 in total. There were also lots of laughs in the staff v customer hula hooping challenge, which really is a challenge! Alongside this a week long book stall and refreshment stall took place. At Kimberley Leisure Centre it was a hive of activity with lots of life size Pudsey’s roaming the building with their infectious mischievous surprising and entertaining customers. The ‘Spin-A-Thon’ proved popular with over 40 people take part. With a special mention to Zoe who cycled for a staggering 14 hours! The bake sale, name the Happy Llama and guess the number of sweets in the jar also contributed to their fundraising.“It’s the support of all our customers and members Kimberley Leisure Centre Staff helping that have made this year’s event truly fantastic. raise money for Children In Need We’re grateful for everyone that’s got involved to contribute to such a great charity that truly helps change countless lives.” Chris LaxtonKane, Managing Director Liberty Leisure Limited.Following the success of this year’s great fundraising appeal, plans are already bubbling to make next year’s event even bigger, better and more fun for everyone involved. Enterprise Rent-A-Car are once again volunteering their staff in tree collections and have donated £1000 towards the hospice as Ben Boot, vehicle acquisitions manager for East Midlands and East Anglia, explained:“We are extremely proud to be involved with Treetops Hospice Care’s Christmas Treecycling project again for 2019. We have enjoyed a very happy partnership with the hospice for more than five years. This year, once again, our involvement goes beyond a monetary donation, as eight of our employees are volunteering their time to collect Christmas trees for recycling.“Our long-standing support for Treetops is partly because our staff members have close ties with the charity, as they have provided care and emotional support to many of our employees’ families and friends. The hospice relies on volunteers and donations and we are incredibly pleased to help them continue to carry out the vital work that they do.” Volunteers from TSB, Virgin Media Dains Accountants and Zing Furniture will be joining the Treetops and Enterprise Rent-A-Car teams collecting trees in vans on loan from Sandicliffe. Rachael‛s Holiday by Marian Keyes This was a first for me on two counts – my first book by Marian Keyes and my first e-book. The narrator is a drug addict in recovery, going through a range of physical and emotional changes as the book develops. In the first few chapters it becomes clear that their version of events may not be wholly reliable – and that their perception of their addiction and other relationships is also flawed. The book moves between Rachel’s current life in the clinic, with a wide variety of characters and sitautions (not all entirely believable) and her reflections on the couple of years leading up to this. In addition to her own memories, family and friends give their thoughts and feelings during some of the therapy sessions. The result is an honest and interesting exploration of addiction and recovery, with a couple of sex scenes and some humour thrown in. The characters are well developed and the story is very readable and well-paced. I wouldn’t rush to read more of Keyes as I suspect they are all on a theme, having said that the quality of the writing is good and the gentle treatment of harsh subjects is beautifully crafted. This is a ‘Walsh Family Novel’, each of the five sisters have their own novel with The Mystery of Mercy Close (about Helen) being the last in the series.
Children‛s Choice The Big Hearted Book by Nicholas Allan This book came to my attention as it was being sold in support of the International Children’s Heart Foundation, and finding age appropriate ways to discuss difficult issues is always helpful. It’s a lovely story about Babette and Bill, who spend all their time together until Babette becomes ill and has to go to hospital – it has a happy ending and is a lovely, simple story about friendship, health, hospitals and hearts. The illustrations aren’t especially inspiring but the layout and pace are excellent. If you like Nicholas Allan, you may enjoy his more hilarious offerings including the more seasonal Father Christmas Needs a Wee.

New Year What to do with leftover Turkey?
Turkey & Ham Pie Ingredients 30g/1oz butter 1 large onion, finely chopped 275ml/10fl oz double cream 100ml/3½fl oz chicken or turkey stock 450g/1lb mushrooms, sliced 1 tbsp tarragon or marjoram, chopped 675g/1lb 5oz cooked turkey and ham, cut into 2cm chunks For the mashed potato 1.2kg/2½lb potatoes knob of butter 1 free-range egg yolk 3 tbsp milk salt and freshly ground black pepper Method Preheat the oven to 180C/360F/Gas 4. In a saucepan large enough to hold all the meat, melt the butter and add the chopped onion. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and cook, without browning, on a gentle heat for 8-10 minutes, until the onions are completely soft. Add the cream and stock and bring up to the boil and simmer for a few minutes to thicken.
44
Meanwhile, in a separate frying pan, heat the mushrooms with a knob of butter (you might need to do this in two batches) for 3-4 minutes, or until soft and golden brown. Add tarragon or majoram to the mushrooms and season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Add the meat and the mushrooms and stir well. For the mashed potato, place the potatoes in a saucepan of boiling water and cook until soft. Drain the potatoes and return them to the saucepan. Mash roughly and then add the butter, egg yolk and milk and mash to a thick paste. Season, to taste, with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Pour the cream, mushroom and meat mixture into a shallow gratin dish and top with the mashed potato. Place in the oven for about 20-30 minutes until the potato topping is golden brown and the filling is hot.

Broxtowe Wardens Retain RSPCA Silver PawPrints Award. The neighbourhood wardens at Broxtowe Borough Council have retained the RSPCA PawPrints Award for the third year running. RSPCA Silver PawPrints Award 2018. The Silver PawPrints Award recognises the team, which is made up of one full-time and two part-time Neighbourhood Wardens, and their work to ensure stray dog welfare during the collection and kennelling processes, proactive work to educate owners, and preventative measures to reduce both straying and long-term strays. The team, who have now received two Silver Awards and a Bronze Award, were assessed on a number of things including basic dog handling, health and safety, the treatment of injured or sick stray dogs, and their continued education programme to encourage responsible dog ownership. Chair of the Community Safety Committee, Councillor Jan Goold said: “The Neighbourhood Wardens do fantastic work to improve the welfare of stray dogs they find in the Borough. To achieve silver again this year is a credit to them. The average dog can live to 15 years and residents are being urged to think carefully before getting a pet to ensure they can provide it with a happy and healthy life. The RSPCA is the UK's largest animal welfare charity and their PawPrints awards, formerly known as the Community Animal Welfare Footprint awards (CAWFA), promotes and celebrates organisations in the public sector that have made the extra effort and gone beyond basic service requirements to ensure higher animal welfare standards in the animal welfare related services they provide.

Home Instead - Article by Primo Sule Care and Support at Home – Alzheimer’s and Sundowning Sleep disturbances are one of the more common symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) and we have frequent conversations with relatives of people we support regarding concerns about sleeping patterns. This is known as Sundowning. If someone you care for has dementia, their confusion and agitation may get worse in the late afternoon and evening, especially during the winter when it gets dark much earlier. Your loved one is most likely to experience sundowning if they have mid-stage or advanced dementia. Some dementia sufferers spend as much as 40% of the night awake, creating increased risk through falls and injury if they get out of bed. This also causes extra worry and tiredness for family carers. The disruption to the body’s circadian rhythm – the natural cycle that governs sleep and wakefulness – can be one of the most difficult of dementia symptoms for carers to cope with. Although the behaviour will be different from person to person I have shared below some coping strategies that we use: • Light up their life. Lighting for ADRD sufferers should be much brighter than normal indoor lighting to counteract the loss of visual activity that occurs with ageing. Try to keep light at a similar level throughout the room as uneven brightness patterns can produce frightening shadows causing agitation and confusion. • Make a comfortable and safe sleep environment. The person’s sleeping area should be at a comfortable temperature and night lights placed within easy reach. Door sensors and motion detectors are now available to alert family members when a person is wandering. Consider a clock next to the bed which shows whether it is day or night. Have a look at www.alzproducts.co.uk • Maintain a schedule and keep them active. Encourage your loved one to adhere to regular routine of meals, waking up and going to bed. Plan the day and include as much activity as possible with part of it ideally outside the home. • Avoid stimulants and big dinners. Avoid nicotine and alcohol and restrict sweets and caffeine consumption to morning and afternoon hours…..the cup of tea at 6pm can make a difference and affect sleep. Ensure the person eats well at lunch time and keep the evening meal simple. Going for a walk, having a warm milky drink, or having a bath or shower before bed may help the person relax. I trust some of the above can help you and your loved one and as usual, if you would like some more information or just to share something with us please get in touch. Helping our local homeless - The Canaan Trust Our History:
Mission Statement:
The Trust has been working within the Community since 1995. At that time there was a well know homeless man, Kenny, sleeping rough in the area. One night he decided to bed down for the night in a large waste skip behind some shops. A group of thugs, seeing him bed down for the night, thought that it would be a laugh to see what his reaction might be if they set light to the skip while Kenny slept. Kenny was badly burned! He was admitted to the Q.M.C where his burns were treated. But he was still homeless. A local minister, putting his Christianity into practice, decided to invite Kenny to come and live with him when he was released from hospital. In due course a group of the minister’s parishioners came together and decided to set the original Trust up (originally called the Aspire Trust) and started to provide accommodation locally for anyone who was homeless. The Trust moved to its current location on Main Street in 2005 when its name changed to the Canaan Trust. The Trust has two houses in Long Eaton and provides accommodation for 12 homeless men from 16 years old to 60 years old. The Trust is a Christian Charity but is not affiliated to any particular Church or denomination.
How you can help:
It is committed to transparency, to fair access, diversity, inclusion as well as fair exit from its services. Key to the trust’s objectives being that each client is empowered and well informed. A client’s independence, individuality and diversity will be fully respected, encouraged and supported. At all times clients are fully consulted on the policies, procedures and day-to-day running of the service. The trust, through the support it provides, is dedicated to enabling each client to rebuild his life, enjoy, achieving the best he can achieve, to attain economic wellbeing, be healthy, stay safe and in all ways possible make a positive contribution. Ultimately, it seeks to enable all clients to successfully move on, maintain themselves in a positive independent manner and lead happier lives.
Homelessness:
Accommodation: Is the visible tip of the support and service which the Trust provides. Operating in a ‘person centred’ manner the Trust seeks to help each unique client to address and overcome the often complex issues which have contributed to his homelessness. No-one chooses to be homeless. Loosing ones job, family or relationship breakdown, physical or mental health issues are a few of the catalysts which can lead to an individual becoming homeless. Personal Support: Clients are mentored and counselled to help them re-build their lives helping each one to achieve the best he can achieve. Education: For many clients basic literacy and numeracy are significant barriers to their being able to lead independent lives. The Trust has invested heavily in its own education facility with tutors providing sessions in literacy, numeracy and I.T. In addition an extensive range of other courses are provided delivering a wide range of ‘Living Skills’ from personal hygiene, healthy eating (including cooking), budgeting, first aid, confidence building, job seeking and employment skills etc.
Helping our Local Homeless
It can happen to anyone!
Volunteer: The Trust values the time and skills which our volunteers provide. Volunteers help us with our Public Appeals helping during our charity collections; handing out leaflets; staffing stalls etc. Volunteers play an important part in our work supporting our clients. Volunteers help in our office, in our food bank, helping to maintain our houses, cooking for our residents, working within our education facility to name but a few of the ways in which you might be able and willing to help. Board of Trustees: our Trustees are volunteers. Would you be interested in becoming a Trustee?
Donors: The Trust is dependent on charitable donations to enable it to carry on its work. One-off donations are the life blood of the Trust donations from individuals, from groups, societies, organisations, schools, churches, and local businesses. Regular donations via Standing Orders, Justgiving or Localgiving enable the Trust to budget and plan ahead. Please contact us if you would like to discuss how you would like to help.
56
The Canaan Trust, an independent Christian charity, seeks to provide safe, secure, and healthy temporary accommodation for homeless men in the Borough of Erewash, Derbyshire, and in the Borough of Broxtowe, Nottinghamshire.
Our Work:
Homelessness is not an ‘IT’, it is a ‘THEY’ ‘They’ are fathers, sons, and brothers; ‘They’ are human beings; ‘They’ are judged, misjudged, ignored, and viewed with suspicion. ‘They’ have labels stuck to them – loser, waster, and scrounger, deserve their lot! ‘They’ rarely experience the label that says, fragile, handle with care, or the gentle approach that comes with it. If ‘They’ happen to pass your way remember ‘They’ have feelings too, and if misfortune should strike then ‘They’ may become ‘You’!
The Canaan Trust helps to rebuild lives. In parallel the Trust also saves the community money too. Through its intervention and the support which the Trust provides it helps to reduce the demand on the community’s Public Services – NHS Services at both G.P and A&E level, Police, Social Care and Local Authority. YOUR support is vital. The Trust depends on charitable donations to undertake its work. …….YOUR help does make a difference!

Unfortunately homelessness can happen to anyone, if you are about to become in this situation or know someone else who may be please contact the Local Council and /or The Canaan Trust for help or advice. Relationship breakdown is the largest single trigger of rough sleeping leading to 42% of male rough sleeping. Men are more at risk of depression and isolation after divorce. The numbers of rough sleepers with mental health issues has increased over the last five years. 72% of rough sleepers with a mental health problem misuse drugs or alcohol. Many homeless people suffer complex trauma throughout their lives. In a recent survey half of those questioned were abused or neglected as children – 23% were abused physically, 12% abused sexually. 24% had attempted suicide. Family relationship breakdown coupled with high levels of youth unemployment, a shortage of shared housing and changes to housing benefit combine to push more young people into rough sleeping. Particularly at risk are young people with behavioural problems, for example ADHD. A recent report by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and Homeless Link found that there were many stages to most people’s experience of acute disadvantage. They often started with troubled childhoods, then substance misuse at a young age, followed by a progression over 7 to 8 years to become ‘officially homeless’. On average homeless people die at just 47 years old. Homeless people are 13 times more likely to be victims of violence. Some 97% of homeless people want a job. Canaan Trust: If you see and are concerned about someone who is rough sleeping, please tell us. Please help us by providing as much information as possible. Email us if you wish to discuss a rough sleeper – office@canaan-trust.co.uk or call 0115 9464903. The Canaan Trust has a close working partnership with our local councils. The Trust is delighted to be held in high esteem by the Council Housing Departments and our staff enjoy a proactive relationship with the officers of the councils as solutions are sought to assist and support the homeless of the area. The Council recognises that the earlier you can contact them the better chance they have of preventing you from becoming homeless.
