Thorough Clean Ever Seen Or It’s Free”!

That’s right, the most thorough cleaning ever. My carpet and upholstery cleaning is the best and most thorough you could ever have – if you don’t agree I won’t accept your payment.

Along with the purchase of your home and family car, your soft furnishings are one of the largest investments you will make. Professional cleaning of your furnishings on a regular basis will extend their life considerably as well as keeping them hygienic and looking good.

Do you want to see the same Optometrists & Staff every time? Do you want to be known as a name and not a number when you visit the Opticians? Do you want to see the most individual, fashionable and niche frames with the finest optical quality lenses from around the world? Do you suffer from Dry Eyes or Blepharitis?

D

irector and senior Optometrist at John Flynn Opticians, Sheeraz Janjua was recently awarded the degree of Doctor of Optometry from Aston University for his research in Dry eye syndrome. Doctor Janjua is one of only 25 Optometrists in UK with this qualification. He has been at the helm in Beeston since 2016 and leads a small team of Optometrists and long standing Optical Assistants. New services have been introduced including Dry Eye and Blepharitis appointments and treatment plans in a practice which already uses a state of the art examination suite with Optometric eye testing software - same as that used at the prestigious Moorfields Eye Hospital and Great Ormond Street Children’s hospital. The practice continues to advise and provide a clinically enhanced eye examination and complete eye health checks; using an OCT instrument to produce a macular, retinal and optic nerve scans to aid early diagnosis of various ocular conditions. The practice is now open all day Monday to Saturday. Off street parking is available in the practice’s own car park.

Established in Beeston, Nottingham over 70 years ago, John Flynn Opticians is located on the corner of the leafy Devonshire Avenue and Chilwell Road. The aim is to create a warm and welcoming environment within the traditionally furnished surroundings. Emphasis is placed on personal service, correctly fitted frames and accurately dispensed ophthalmic lenses by exceptional manufacturers such as Carl Zeiss, Nikon, Seiko, Rodenstock, Essilor, Hoya and many other superior independent lens suppliers. The team are genuinely passionate about providing the best possible product for the needs of the client. The largest range of quality niche eyewear such as Etnia Barcelona, Face a Face, ProDesign, Salt and Silhouette and designer frames such as Polo Ralph Lauren and sunglasses such as Ray-Ban, Oakley and Maui Jim are stocked. In a market dominated by larger optical groups here is a practice dedicated to providing patients with a reassuring, individual and professional service. Indeed, Dr. Janjua advocates the following guidance “The prescribing and dispensing of spectacles are very closely linked and it would be in your best interests to have your spectacles dispensed where you had your eyes examined. It is more difficult to resolve problems you may have with your spectacles when prescribing and supply are separated.”

The College of Optometrists, which is the professional, scientific and examining body for optometry in the UK working for the public benefit, has issued this advice regarding your spectacle prescription. The practice also offers a contact lens fitting and aftercare service. Spectacles and contact lenses have never been more affordable since thelaunch of the monthly ‘Eyeplan’. John Flynn Opticians welcomes the registration of new patients. The practice is open from Monday to Friday from 9am to 5:30pm. Saturday 9am-5pm. Come and meet our staff

Beeston Fund-raiser is biggest in UK The award-winning Oxjam Beeston Music Festival has broken its own fundraising record and become the largest Oxjam festival in 2017. There are over forty Oxjam festivals held at towns and cities across the UK, all raising money for Oxfam. Beeston’s Festival is consistently one of the biggest. This year, they have broken their own record, set in 2015, by raising a whopping £22,000 for the international charity. Festival Director, Colin Tucker, said, ‘We have a brilliant organising Team behind the scenes, all of whom are volunteers, with fantastic support from local venues, sponsors and local music fans’. Heather Greenan, who organised the Festival’s largest event, the ‘Takeover’ added. ‘This is a real community event and this year everything came together - huge numbers attended the all-day festival to see hundreds of talented artists - helping us raise such an amazing amount!’ As well as ‘Takeover’ the Festival included ‘Unplugged’, ‘Rock Night,‘Operatic Arias’, ‘Classical Oxjam’ and ‘The Oxjam Ceilidh’. The Team estimate that well over three thousand people attended their events, with about 130 individual artists, groups or ensembles (all playing for free), with 20 ‘stages’ on ‘Takeover Day’ across 18 venues.

Legion Social Club and Middle Street Resource Centre. Tim Hunter, Oxfam GB Fundraising Director, commented, “Oxjam Beeston has been one of our flagship, volunteer-led Oxjam music festivals for some years now, and this year’s achievement of raising over £22,000 for Oxfam (their record total to date) is nothing short of inspiring. The team know their local music scene inside out, and their fundraising efforts have been incredible. The money raised from Oxjam Beeston will make a huge difference to those living in extreme poverty, and proves that local music really can have a global impact.”

Olivia and Finn

Sponsors supporting the Festival included The Star Inn (headline sponsor), the University of Nottingham, NET, CP Walker, Foster Industrial (all of whom were stage sponsors), PN Design, Breeze, Nottinghamshire County Council (Cllr Kate Foale ‘Divisional Fund’ grant) and local folk club ‘Second Time Around’. Apart from local pubs and coffee bars, venues included Bartons, Beeston Public Library, Beeston Parish Church, Beeston Methodist Church (Chilwell Road), The Royal British

Oxfam is a global movement of millions of people who share the belief that, in a world rich in resources, poverty isn't inevitable. In just 15 years, extreme poverty has been halved. 15 more years and we can end it for good. We respond fast in emergencies, work on long-term projects with communities determined to shape a better future for themselves and we campaign for genuine, lasting change.

F F F Fo Fo R Fo

About OXJAM Oxjam is the UK’s largest grassroots QM Barbershop music festival which is made up of hundreds of volunteer-led music events. Oxjam celebrates local music whilst raising vital funds for Oxfam and helping to change the lives of those living in poverty around the world. Local music, global impact. ABOUT OXJAM BEESTON - the local ‘Oxjam’ has been running for seven years, during which time it has raised approximately £85000 for Oxfam. The local organising Team consists of about twenty people from various walks of life, ages and backgrounds, with a variety of skills and experience which they give, free of charge, in the service of Oxjam. On the day of the Takeover, this Team is enhanced by more than a hundred volunteers who sell tickets, collect donations, run sound systems, manage venues - and many other jobs that need doing! WHAT WOULD £22000 DELIVER IN AN OXFAM PROGRAMME? £22,000 could provide safe water in an emergency for 22,000 people; or support 11 communities in Nepal with an irrigation system so they can grow enough food to eat, pay bills, and even help the whole extended family.

BROXTOWE COUPLE HONOURED AT TREE PLANTING A COUPLE from Broxtowe have been honoured at a special tree planting ceremony to recognise their impact on the local community and kick off the Council’s yearly tree planting programme. A Norway Maple was planted by the Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor Halimah Khaled MBE, in memory of Harry and Pat Roe on 30th November at Dovecote Lane Recreation Ground. The Mayor was joined by friends and family of the couple. Harry and Pat were heavily involved in the early day of the Borough’s twinning work with Gutersloh in Germany and were active fundraisers of Macmillan Cancer Support. They lived very close to the Recreation Ground and visited regularly. The family said, “Harry and Pat would have been delighted to see another tree planted in the Dovecote Lane Recreation Ground; having spent most of their lives living just opposite the park and having a deep respect for the natural environment that surrounded them. All the family and friends would like to thank the council for the opportunity to have this tree planted here as a lasting reminder of two very popular local people.” The tree has been planted close to the Tree Circle around the bandstand, which was planted 25 years ago and has become a striking feature at the park. The tree also marked part of the Council’s involvement with National Tree Week 2017: the annual commitment by the Tree Council to plant more trees and highlight their value. Trees provide habitats for all sorts of wildlife, but they also provide value for humans too. They help to clean our polluted air, provide shade to keeps people cool, help conserve energy, and they look great too. For more information about trees in Broxtowe, please visit https://www.broxtowe.

Care and support at home: Alzheimer’s and Sleep Sleep disturbances are one of the more common symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) and we have frequent conversations with relatives of people we support regarding concerns about sleeping patterns. The sleep disturbances might include a tendency to fall asleep during the daytime as well as increased walking during the night. Some dementia sufferers spend as much as 40% of the night awake, creating increased risk through falls and injury if they get out of bed. This also causes extra worry and tiredness for family carers. The disruption to the body’s circadian rhythm – the natural cycle that governs sleep and wakefulness – can be one of the most difficult of dementia symptoms for carers to cope with. Scientists don’t completely understand why sleep disturbances occur with ADRD. As with changes in memory and behaviour, sleep changes somehow result from the impact of Alzheimer’s on the brain. Some studies indicate that over 30% of people with Alzheimer’s will experience increased confusion, anxiety and agitation beginning late in the day. Although the behaviour will be different from person to person I have shared below some coping strategies that we use: • Keep the home well lit. Lighting for ADRD sufferers should be much brighter than normal indoor lighting to counteract the loss of visual activity that occurs with ageing. Try to keep light at a similar level throughout the room as uneven brightness patterns can produce

42

frightening shadows causing agitation and confusion. • Make a comfortable and safe sleep environment. The person’s sleeping area should be at a comfortable temperature and night lights placed within easy reach. Door sensors and motion detectors are now available to alert family members when a person is wandering. Consider a clock next to the bed which shows whether it is day or night. Have a look at www.alzproducts.co.uk • Maintain a schedule. Encourage your loved one to adhere to regular routine of meals, waking up and going to bed. Plan the day and include as much activity as possible with part of it ideally outside the home. • Avoid stimulants and big dinners. Avoid nicotine and alcohol and restrict sweets and caffeine consumption to morning and afternoon hours…..the cup of tea at 6pm can make a difference and affect sleep. Ensure the person eats well at lunch time and keep the evening meal simple. Going for a walk, having a warm milky drink, or having a bath or shower before bed may help the person relax. I trust some of the above can help you and your loved one and as usual, if you would like some more information or just to share something with us please get in touch. Bramcote boy heading for BMX World Championships in 2018 Local boy Jack Needham has been BMX racing since he was about six years old at the Bulwell track, and currently is a member of the Bunneys Team based in Nottingham. Jack rides in the BMX Cruiser class, and is qualified in this level. Jack has lived in Bramcote Village all of his life. He went to Bramcote Cof E School and is now studying at the George Spencer Academy. He has always loved biking and once he started, this spurred on his Dad Steve who then decided to take part, Steve races in the older class and is one of the coaches at Bulwell. J ack races in the local races, he is now at regional level for the Midlands, and also at the National level all over the country. It is through his results at Nationals that he has qualified for the World Championships next year. He is so excited to race for Great Britain and be part of the whole experience in Azerbaijan. Unfortunately he does not get any funding for this at all, he doesn’t get any funding of any kind for flights , accommodation etc. His GB shirt and the transportation of his bike is funded by Jack’s parents. Jacks family are currently looking for anyone who would be generous enough to contribute to this cost for him in any way, however small. If you wish to contribute to Jack’s funding please contact Jo: 07796 273552.

Local teen Emma Snow writes about various topics and events each month in the Grapevine. “A voice for the young people in our Community”. A new beginning There’s always that huge excitement when starting something new, whether it’s starting a new job, moving away to university or even starting at a new school. Along with the excitement, come the nerves too and the fear of the new chapter not living up to your expectations. Making the decision to do something new in your life is a huge step in itself, but the actual doing of it is the scary part. I recently moved to university which meant that I had to move out of my family home for the first time. Initially it was very overwhelming but this was to be expected, because a big change often means that it’s very hard to adapt after something you’ve become so used to for so long. Stepping out of that comfort zone is a huge deal and often the hardest part. As you get older, it’s often harder to make new friends quickly and try out new things, because you have so much more to think about and consider compared to when you were younger. That’s what I’ve found anyway and I’m not even that old! Sometimes you set

52

your expectations too high and end up disappointed. Recently I have learnt that you have to just go at your own pace and eventually things will start to settle down and fall into place. Don’t give up too soon because you never know what opportunities are around the corner. It might sound like a cliché; but it’s all about the journey and making the most of an opportunity, because you don’t know what the outcome might be until you try it. With a lot of things, a new chapter is daunting and if you stick with it, you might actually realise that you did make the right decision with the next step in your life. Even if you do stick it out and you realise that it isn’t the right time in your life for a certain change, at least you tried it. If we didn’t ever try new things, we would never know what we are capable of. If you think about it, life would be boring if we always did the same thing day in day out for the rest of our lives and didn’t leave our comfort zone. We should give ourselves more credit for trying out new things and realise how big some life changes can be. We don’t have a dress rehearsal for life, so we may as well make the most of it. No one to sleep out in the cold this

winter.

The problem of homelessness is getting worse nationally, and Nottingham is no exception. Our No Second Night Out policy means that all rough sleepers are offered shelter as soon as we know they’re on the streets. Last winter Nottingham City Council and Framework helped 193 rough sleepers off the streets and into accommodation. You can make a difference by donating money, clothes, food, or your time What help is offered to rough sleepers? The council funds Framework’s Street Outreach Team which offers help and support to everybody who is sleeping rough in Nottingham. However, not everyone accepts that support, for complex reasons that may include drug and alcohol addiction or mental health issues.Others may have no connection with Nottingham and so efforts will be made to connect them with support services in the area they come from. The council’s one hundred Community Protection Officers operate in the city centre and every Nottingham neighbourhood. Part of their job is to identify anyone sleeping rough and help anyone at risk to access support and accommodation. On Friday and Saturday nights, Street Pastors from 24 different city churches are out and about in Nottingham, also helping to identify anyone at risk of rough sleeping and help them to find accommodation and support options. Nottingham City Council is spending over £4million this financial year (17/18)

54

to tackle homelessness - for example, helping people to sort out problems with benefits, debt and landlords and helping them to access mental health and other support How will we protect rough sleepers in very cold weather? This winter, we’re investing an additional £106,000 which opens up extra beds and support at the Winter Shelter for rough sleepers. When the temperatures are freezing, emergency measures kick in to get all rough sleepers off the streets and into the warm, regardless of their

situation and background. What should you do if you see someone sleeping rough? If you see a rough sleeper, please call Framework on 0800 0665356 (free from landlines and mobiles) so their Street Outreach team can offer support. How to help rough sleepers in Nottingham Firstly - if you see a rough sleeper who you’re worried about, please call Framework on 0800 0665356 (24 hours a day, free from landlines and mobiles) so their Street Outreach team can offer support. Secondly - donate money, food and household items to charities helping homeless people here in Nottingham. The UK Space Agency has announced £200,000 of funding for 4 new business incubators to boost the number of start-up companies in the space sector across the UK. The incubators, in Buckinghamshire, Hampshire, Leicestershire and London, will provide world-class science innovation support for entrepreneurs and small businesses to help grow the UK space industry. The funding follows the launch of the government’s Industrial Strategy, which includes a £50 million programme to enable new satellite launch services and low gravity spaceflights from UK spaceports, to boost the economy and inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers. UK Space Agency Chief Executive, Dr Graham Turnock, who made the announcement at the STFC RAL Space Appleton Space Conference at Harwell in Oxfordshire, said: “The funding for these new business incubators will see the excellent network of support we have in the UK expand and provide further opportunities for exciting start-ups in the space sector, with 15 incubators working across 22 locations. “The Industrial Strategy underlined the government’s commitment to make Britain the best place to start and grow a business, with prosperous communities across the UK. Supporting new businesses across the UK is central to reaching our ambition of capturing 10% of the global space market by 2030 and I am sure these new incubators will have a fantastic impact.” The funding will see £50,000 go to Oxford Innovation, for two new

62

incubators in Fareham and Bordon in Hampshire, £50,000 for Seraphim to establish a space accelerator in London and £50,000 for the Satellite Applications Catapult at Harwell to establish a space incubator at Westcott, Buckinghamshire. The University of Leicester will receive £50,000 to establish a graduate preincubator to help students develop entrepreneurial ideas. The space sector is a UK success story, underpinning industries worth more than £250 billion to the UK economy. Last week Business Secretary Greg Clark launched the Industrial Strategy, which sets out a long-term vision for how Britain can build on its economic strengths, address its productivity performance, embrace technological change and support businesses and workers. A key policy includes driving over £20 billion of investment in innovative and high potential businesses, including through establishing a new £2.5bn Investment Fund, incubated in the British Business Bank. The £50 million space programme builds on the £99 million already invested in the National Satellite Test Facility run by STFC RAL Space at Harwell, which was recommended by the UK Space Facilities Review, a report commissioned by the UK Space Agency to look at ways to help grow the UK space industry. Danelaw Saga: Bringing Vikings back to the East Midlands Friday 15 December - Sunday 08 April Weston Gallery Admission FreeOpen Tuesday – Friday 11am-4pm Saturday & Sunday 12noon-4pm Closed Mondays Invade…immigrate…integrate… inspire. ‘Danelaw Saga’ tells the tale of how the Vikings shaped the East Midlands. ‘Danelaw Saga’ tells a local story of Viking culture with artefacts, maps and medieval documents from Manuscripts and Special Collections at the University of Nottingham and from regional museums. This exhibition presents an opportunity to see extraordinary Viking works brought together and to learn about the places whose names evoke the Viking past. Visitors can map the routes of Viking expeditions, view coins brought from the Middle East to the East Midlands, and explore their heritage further with artefacts and jewellery worn by the Viking women that settled in the East Midlands. ‘Danelaw Saga’ tells the story of Viking heritage hidden in plain sight, from place names in use since they were given by the Vikings to modern literature inspired by the East Midlands’ own Viking past. ‘Danelaw Saga’ uncovers the legacy of the Vikings on our doorstep. ‘Danelaw Saga’ has been jointly curated by Professor Judith Jesch and Dr Roderick Dale of the Centre for Study of the Viking Age, and by Manuscripts and Special Collections at the University of Nottingham. The Bringing Vikings back to the East Midlands project is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council.

RETIREMENT – HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF IT “Don’t sleepwalk into retirement” warns Linda Whitt of the Nottingham and District Pre-Retirement Council. Linda joined the organisation in 1982 and must have witnessed well over fifteen thousand people attend the Pre-Retirement Seminars which are arranged each month at Beeston Town Hall. From hospital Porters to Chief Executives of Borough Councils, Linda has dealt with them all by arranging their attendance and ensuring they get the best help possible. For large companies, courses are held on site. We cover the whole of the East Midlands. The Charity celebrates their 50th Anniversary and is a not for profit organisation. The Volunteer Course Facilitators are retired themselves and so can give first-hand experience and advice. The Speakers are all experts in their own fields and are available on a 1:1 during the programmes. Many people approaching retirement say “I’m not going on a course – I’m just going to enjoy myself and take it easy; I don’t need to make plans or be told how to pass my time”.Well that’s fine, we hope you do enjoy yourself and are able to relax a bit more. But… is that all there is to the third age; isn’t there a bit more to it than that? For example, how can you be sure that you have received, without prejudice, the best financial advice to safeguard your 72

future, so that you can enjoy yourself without worry. Do you have questions about taxation in retirement, such as “If I have a part time job, will I pay tax and, if so, how much?” or “how much will my investment be affected”. “If I live in my villa in Spain, will I still receive my Government Pension?” What about your legal rights? “Can I

still obtain credit when I retire?” “If I have to go into residential care, will I have to sell my property to pay the fees?” These are some of the questions that have been answered on the “PLANNING FOR CHANGE COURSES” that we currently run. The course covers all these topics and much more – Fitness/Health/Diet/State Pensions/ Benefits/Safety/Security/Consumer Advice/Volunteering and, Yes, even tips on how to enjoy your retirement. The five top tips in retirement has been developed in consultation with the Course Facilitators at the NDPRC.

1)Retirement is a process, not an event. 2)Think about it and plan for it in advance, and allow time to adjust. 3)Before you retire, think about all the positive things you get from work (e.g. sense of purpose, companionship, structure and routine) and look for ways in which you can replace these when you do retire. 4 )Don’t give all your time away. 5 )Before you retire, don’t promise to take on too much. It’s time to think about the 3rd Stage in your Life and plan ahead. Join us on a programme and date of your choice next year. What are you waiting for? Fraudsters offering fake Government grants Individuals and businesses are being warned to watch out for cold calls and online contact from fraudsters who are offering victims the opportunity to apply for Government grants for an advance fee. To make the grants look legitimate fraudsters have set up bogus companies and convincing looking websites that claim to be operating on behalf of the UK Government. Fraudsters cold call businesses and individuals offering the grant and if they’re interested direct them to fill out an online application form with their personal information. Once the fraudsters have that information they’ll contact back victims and congratulate them on being accepted onto the grant programme. Pre-paid credit cards Applicants are then asked to provide identification and are instructed to get a pre-paid credit card to deposit their own contribution to the fake Government grant scheme. Fraudsters will then contact victims on the phone or are emailed and asked for the details of their pre-paid credit card and copies of statements to in order for them to add the grant funds.Of course the grant funds are never given by the fraudsters and the money that’s been loaded by the victim onto the card is stolen. If you receive one of these calls, hang up immediately and report it to us. We’ve already taken down one website fraudsters have been using to commit this fraud and are working with Companies House to combat this issue. Wollaton Natural History Society For it’s first meeting of the New Year on Wednesday January 17th 2018, Wollaton Natural History Society will be offering a talk by Lindsey Shirley on The Work of the Canal and River Trust in the East Midlands. The Trust used to be British Waterways and took over the guardianship of all the rivers and canals in England and Wales in 2012. This talk covers their work in the East Midlands including a history of the Trust’s work focusing on the environmental aspect. We meet at St Leonard's Community Centre, Bramcote Lane, Wollaton (opposite the library) at 7.30pm. Annual subscription is £14.50 (about £1.30p per meeting) and now is a good time to join at the beginning of our year. Visitors are very welcome at £3.50 on the door.
