Take the Downshift Challenge – can you slash £1,500 off your yearly grocery bill? Don't believe the brand hypnosis. Whether it's bacon, biscuits, baked beans or bolognese sauce, if something costs more it's got to be better, right? Wrong. The phrasing and promotional language used in shops hypnotises us into thinking most costly is best. While the packaging looks more opulent, look beneath to the actual product you're getting and sometimes you won't be able to tell the difference.Supermarkets separate their products into different categories, using loaded language to give you the choice of how 'luxury' or 'basic' you want to be.As you move up the brand level costs increase, as do presentation and sometimes ingredients. Often a manufacturers' brand and own brand may well be made in the same factory by the same people (though it's tough to prove with specific products). Premium. Words like 'finest' or 'extra special' imply it's a treat. Branded. Products like McVitie's Jaffa Cakes or Kellogg's cereal. Own brand. These tend to be presented in a similar way to manufacturers' brands, but with the supermarket's own take on it. Value. With names like 'basic' or 'savers', the presentation is deliberately stark to imply it’s cut back to the bones. Take the Downshift Challenge To fight back and save big, try the Downshift Challenge. The theory is simple: Try dropping one brand level on everything. Then see if you can tell the difference. If not, stick with the cheaper one. The next time you shop, swap one of everything to something just one brand level lower. So if you usually buy four cartons of Tesco’s own-brand orange
12
juice, this time buy three of those and one Tesco Everyday Value. If you use branded aloe vera shower cream, drop to Asda’s own brand. The point of this system isn’t to force you to drop down a brand level on everything, but to ensure you’re not spending money for no reason. If you can’t tell the difference between the lower brand level goods, then why pay more for it.It’s far better to taste with your mouth than your eyes, so try giving family members a blind taste test with no packaging to ensure it’s fair. Of course, let’s not go extreme on this. If there’s a 2for1 on a higher brand (and you’d use both packs) making it cheaper than downshifting, stick with the higher brand. Try the Downshift Challenge tool To inspire you, try our fun Downshift Challenge tool. (www.moneysavingexpert. com) (go on to shopping link on top ) Tell it where you shop how much you spend and the proportion of each brand you buy (premium, manufacturers’, own brand or basic) and it’ll crunch the numbers. Many can save £1,000s. Drop a brand level on everything you buy and according to the Mysupermarket comparison website, you’ll usually cut the bill by 30%. For a family’s £100 shop that’s over £1,500 a year. Even if you only drop half the brands because you can tell the difference on others, that’s still a saving of £750 a year. www.moneysavingexpert.com It’s worth noting the biggest downshift savings aren’t from premium brands to manufacturer brands, but for those who are already lower down the brand chain. WOLLATON CARE GROUP - CAN YOU HELP? Our ‘group’ consists of a fairly small number of people who live in the Wollaton area who arrange activities aimed at helping elderly people to enjoy a more active social life within the community. We have two Luncheon Clubs, held on each Wednesday and Thursday throughout the year, providing meals at a moderate cost. We arrange outings and visits and, by discussion, we may be able to arrange a limited number of home visits. We have recently lost a number of our clients due to illness and other circumstances and are therefore keen to recruit new members For further information please phone John Tordoff on 0115 9988306

Tim Sexton is currently the manager at Nottingham wildlife trust's Attenborough nature centre and is responsible for the design of the new Sand Martin hide which has been a major success and also for finding some insects for the first time in Nottinghamshire and also recording over 1000 species at Attenborough Reserve. Tim is also a regular on BBC radio Nottingham enlightening listeners on the wonderful world of wildlife The talk description is as follows: For over 40 years the Iron Curtain divided Europe. Along stretches, the physical barrier was set 5km in from a country’s actual border, creating a no man’s land – free from human inhabitants. With little disturbance, wildlife thrived. When the Iron Curtain fell many of these areas became protected as national parks. Tim looks at the wildlife of one such area - Podyji National Park in the Czech Republic.

Music and lyrics by FRANK LOESSER Book by JO SWERLING and ABE BURROWS This amateur production is presented by arrangement with JOSEF WEINBERGER LTD. on behalf of MUSIC THEATRE INTERNATIONAL of NEW YORK.
Long Eaton Operatic Society Youth Group- Guys and Dolls Thursday 22nd to Saturday 24th February 2018 - Duchess Theatre, Long Eaton. After a well-earned summer break the above group are well into rehearsals for their February 2018 show, Guys and Dolls. This is a romantic musical comedy involving two couples; a professional gambler and a Salvation Army girl, and a showgirl dreaming of the day she will marry her compulsive gambler of a boyfriend. It takes us from the bustle of New York’s Times Square, the dance clubs of Havana and to the sewers of New York City as it demonstrates the great lengths a guy will go to when he falls in love with a “doll.” Guys and Dolls features some of Frank Loesser’s most memorable tunes, including the hilarious “Adelaide’s Lament,” the romantic “I’ve Never Been in Love Before,” the exuberant “If I Were a Bell,” and the classics, “Luck Be a Lady” and “Sit down you’re Rocking the Boat”. With lots of parts and rousing choruses there are plenty of opportunities for all the youngsters to showcase their talents. So, if you have the chance and want an evening of lively entertainment, do come along and see the show for yourselves. Everyone would be delighted to see you. Tickets are on sale now priced £8 & £7 (concessions Saturday Matinee only) and are available from:www.duchess-theatre.com booking fee applies (Ticketsource) LEOS Youth Group Box Office - Mobile No. 07864 033663 Duchess Theatre, West Gate, Long Eaton on Saturday mornings.

Going Back in Time A Brief History of the School, William Lilley Stapleford 1894. Compiled from School Log Books by Mrs J Matthews, ex Deputy Head. Parents may not be aware, that one of the many duties of a Head teacher is to keep a diary or log of events, which take place in or affect the school. Old school books are kept at the County Archive Office in Nottingham. They make fascinating reading and give very interesting insight into the development of school life.
T
he name William Lilley Infant and Nursery School is of course a recent one.On the 9th January 1978, Mrs Jones reported that the first thirteen pupils wereadmitted to the new Nursery Unit - despite the lack of curtains and carpets. Previously, Mrs Ruth Attenborough, when newly appointed as Head teacher, had noted that the school was to be styled ‘Stapleford William Lilley County Primary School’ from 13th October 1952. It was two years later in 1954, that the school’s intake was restricted to the infant age range. Incidentally, Mr William Lilleys name, first appears in the log book, when at 8.35am on 30th June 1922, as in his capacity as a Board of Managers, he visited the school and found ‘everything to be alright’. He was to make regular visits over the following years. However, the full school’s history goes back to 1894, when the School Board established Brookhill School, and appointed Miss Annie Moorhouse as Headmistress. She admitted 136 children on 1st September 1894, but it was on 17th May 1907 that the school, under the longest serving head, Miss Mary Etherinton (1899- 1921), moved to its present site and became Stapleford Halls Road School. On reading the entries made in the log books over 85 years, one is struck by the fact, that although there have been extensive developments in the education of the young children, there are many things that do not change. For example, the facility with which young children manage to injure themselves, and the ease with which infectious illnesses spread amongst them is shown by the regular references in log books.

In October 1895, Miss Moorhouse noted a lot of absences due to an outbreak of measles. In July 1902, the school was closed for five weeks because of an epidemic of measles and influenza. In 1903, smallpox was diagnosed in a child from Bessell Lane and all children from that area was excluded from school. More recently in 1952, Dr, Bebbington attended the school to ‘consider the flu epidemic’, but the school was not closed. Each accident at school also has to be reported by the Headteacher. On the 12th October 1908, ‘a girl had a severe hurt after being pushed while playing in the school yard during morning play’. After a number of accidents involving the children and even a member of staff ‘who hurt her side and twisted her back’ - an iron railing was put round the offending N.W corner of the playground, and the asphalt roughened. Incidentally, in 1912, workmen were employed to put up fencing to separate boys and girls in the playgound , and as late as 1928, girls were forbidden to play leap frog in the playground unless it was under the supervision of teachers ‘who understand the game’. Local lady Emma Snow writes about various topics and events each month in the Grapevine. “A voice for the young people in our Community”.
Living in the moment We spend so much time thinking about the future. Just look at your calendar, you’ve probably got meetings, deadlines or even meeting up with friends and family booked well in advance. Of course, it’s important to plan and planning is often the key to success, however sometimes we plan so much that we forget to live in the moment. I hold my hands up because I am guilty of not living in the moment; I plan how I’m going to get everything done, in what order and at what time. This is something I am going to work on in 2018. Equally, I can spend hours evaluating what I have done in a day or how I could have done something differently. It’s very rare that I’ll actually just think about one thing or enjoy one particular moment. Often with a busy life and schedule, there is more than one thing to think about at any given time. It’s often important that we enjoy the now; enjoy the process of getting to where you want to be or what you wish to achieve. Any moment should be enjoyed, embraced and celebrated.
52
With New Year celebrations over, there were probably many special moments to celebrate over the festive period. It’s the perfect season at a time where everyone comes together, whether this is with family or friends and it is a time where a little more love is spread. Those moments spent with those you hold dearly, are the memories you will remember in years to come, not the deadlines or work you have to complete. Think back to the last party you went to, how much of the time was spent texting someone that wasn’t at the party? How much of the event were you checking the time, thinking about what you had to do or where you have to be next? We often look forward to certain events and then before you know it they are over. It’s important to switch off and enjoy every moment and just have fun. Put away your phone at the next social event you attend and just enjoy real life with real people, even if it’s just for a few hours. Enjoy the now and try not to worry about what the future holds. 12 Tips to Help Your Business Thrive! Owning your own small business can have its challenges, so here's some helpful tips from the business advice experts at Mi Ventures. 1.Listen to your customers. Your customers hold a wealth of information that you as a small business need to grow and develop. Ask them what they like and don’t like about your business and LISTEN to their answers. 2.Be proactive and stay in contact with your customers after a sales enquiry or a purchase. Add them to your email list and actively market to them. Just remember to follow data protection laws. 3.Ask for recommendations from your customers rather than hoping that this will happen naturally. People respond to recommendations from people that they know well and trust. 4.Know what your competitors are doing. This can help you to make your own products or services stand out by taking advantage of their weaknesses and improving your own product or service. 5.Fall in love with your business all over again. If you love your business, your business loves you back! 6.Remember that ‘You don’t know what you don’t know’. Ask for help from your peers, local enterprise agency, business library and local council. It’s also a great way to network! 7.Improve your cashflow by ensuring you’re getting paid on time. Help your customers to do this by making sure that your invoices clearly show your payment terms and provide bank details. 8.Love your community and its other local businesses. Support and promote local events and fellow business owners
54
to raise your profile as well as finding new business opportunities. Not to mention the warm and fuzzy feeling that you’ll get inside! 9.Protect your intellectual property. Your business name, designs, copy and patents are all things that give you a competitive edge and are valuable assets. 10.Don’t spread yourself too thin. If you are new to social media platforms there is no need to be on them all! Find out which ones your customer group engage with the most and focus on these ones to begin with. 11.Learn to delegate. Your most valuable commodity is time so don’t waste it, so think about where your time will be best spent. Perhaps you are spending too much of your time on bookkeeping and accounting or data entry and admin. (If you can delegate, you should.) 12.Create a marketing plan to help you focus your time, efforts and money on activities that are in line with your overall business objectives. For more tips and advice on starting up or running your business, live chat online with a Business Advisor – Monday to Friday 9am to 7pm – FREE OF CHARGE, courtesy of Broxtowe Borough Council.

So if you usually buy four cartons of Tesco’s own-brand orange
juice, this time buy three of those and one Tesco Everyday Value. To receive a money saving tips weekly email from Martin Lewis: www.moneysavingexpert.com Article - MoneySaving Expert

Healthier Lunchbox Ideas for Kids Tuna and bean salad
This colourful salad is a good way to include fish in your child's lunchbox. This would work well with a slice of malt loaf and a satsuma. Prep time 10 mins - Serves 1 Ingredients 3 tsp olive oil, Juice of ½ lemon, large pinch of dried mixed herbs Large pinch of mustard powder, large pinch of black pepper,1 slice of pepper, chopped, 2 spring onions, sliced, 3cm piece of cucumber, chopped 1 heaped tbsp canned mixed beans in water, drained ½ x 160g can of tuna in spring water, drained To serve: 1 thick slice of wholemeal bread and lower-fat spread
1.Mix the oil, lemon juice, mixed herbs, mustard powder and black pepper. 2.Add to the salad vegetables, beans and tuna and mix gently. Double the recipe to use the rest of the can of tuna and save for the next day. 3.Serve with the bread and lower-fat spread. This would also work well with cold pasta as a pasta salad, instead of serving with bread. Complete your lunchbox with: A satsuma, slice of malt loaf, 200ml semi-skimmed milk Spicy chicken and salad wrap
Prep time 10 mins- Serves 1 Ingredients 1 tbsp low-fat Greek style yoghurt, ¼ tsp of curry powder, to taste Large pinch of chilli powder, to taste, 85g cooked chicken breast, chopped into small pieces, 1 large wholemeal wrap Small wedge of lettuce, to give 2 tbsp when shredded 3 slices of cucumber, chopped,1 slice of pepper, chopped Complete your lunchbox with: Peach and strawberry slices Homemade popcorn (for example flavoured with cinnamon) 150ml fruit juice drink (with no added sugar) 1.Mix the yoghurt and spices to taste and add the chicken. This is a great way to use leftover roast chicken. 2 .Spread the chicken mixture on the wrap, then sprinkle on the lettuce, cucumber and pepper. 3.Try other salad vegetables – grated carrot and chopped celery work well, too. Fold opposite edges of the wrap, to keep the filling in, then roll up and cut in half.

Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance to introduce critical care in the air - day AND night
This extended service won’t happen overnight, but the wheels are already in motion towards the provision of a 24/7 helicopter emergency service for the communities we serve by the end of the year.”
We are extremely proud and excited to share some fantastic news for 2018; the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance is to extend its life-saving service to become operational 24-hours every day! 2017 was a fantastic year for our Charity – we not only took delivery of our new, state-of-the-art AgustaWestland 169 helicopter, but we also began to carry blood on board for the first time. These advancements have proven to be of great benefit to the pre-hospital critical care that our clinical crew already provides every day of the year. As a further reflection of our commitment to providing a firstclass Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) in Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire, our Board of Trustees recently approved the decision to extend our helicopter’s operational hours. Karen Jobling, CEO said: “Emergencies don’t stop at 7pm and nor will we. Thanks to our fantastic supporters, we are now in a position to fund the extension of our service and provide advanced clinical care to the people of Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
64
As well as our state-of-the-art helicopter, our Charity also has a Rapid Response Vehicle (RRV) which can quickly transport a Critical Care Paramedic and Pre-Hospital Care Doctor to a patient; this vehicle carries the same life-saving equipment as our helicopter. This means we can deliver an advanced level of clinical care and equipment to our patients that goes above and beyond that of a land ambulance. Our RRV will continue to be used when our helicopter is grounded due to bad weather or unplanned maintenance. Doctor Susan Dashey, joint Clinical Lead at the Charity added: “I am delighted that we are gearing up to extend our pre-hospital emergency medical service. Trauma, serious illness, and cardiac arrests can happen anytime, day or night and, working with our partner East Midlands Ambulance Service, we have identified the need for an extended critical care capability in our area. It’s tremendous news that the Charity can continue to build upon its strong foundations of excellent clinical care in this way.”

Our commitment to fly 24 hours a day, together with the additional benefits that our new helicopter provides, along with the advancement in carrying blood on board, puts our Charity at the very forefront of medical aviation – somewhere we intend to remain! We want to continue to provide our patients with the very best and most advanced critical care possible outside of a hospital environment. Hundreds of families still have their loved ones today because of the fast actions and expertise of our crew and this is something we are extremely proud of. Increasing the hours that we fly is something that requires not only careful planning, but also significant investment. From a practical standpoint, we need additional crew, increased training, more aviation fuel and more medical supplies. Vitally, we also need to raise even more funds, as the cost to provide a 24-hour HEMS service will increase from £2.5m per year to around £4m.
Since our Charity began in 1994, we have received tremendous support from the people of Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire, something which we are extremely grateful for. It is this continued support that has enabled our Charity to consistently enhance the prehospital critical care that we can provide to our patients – giving them the very best chance of survival in what is often their greatest hour of need. We are extremely excited about the opportunity to deliver 24-hour care in the air. If you can help us to do this, please get in touch today and give your support. Currently, our HEMS team operate 7 days a week between 7am and 7pm. The new 24-hour service will initially be for a two-year trial period during which the medical emergencies our helicopter is dispatched to will be closely reviewed and analysed to ensure we continue to provide the most appropriate critical care possible across our two counties.

Danelaw Saga: Bringing Vikings back to the East Midlands Friday 15 December - Sunday 08 April Weston Gallery Admission FreeOpen Tuesday – Friday 11am-4pm Saturday & Sunday 12noon-4pm Closed Mondays Invade…immigrate…integrate… inspire. ‘Danelaw Saga’ tells the tale of how the Vikings shaped the East Midlands. ‘Danelaw Saga’ tells a local story of Viking culture with artefacts, maps and medieval documents from Manuscripts and Special Collections at the University of Nottingham and from regional museums. This exhibition presents an opportunity to see extraordinary Viking works brought together and to learn about the places whose names evoke the Viking past. Visitors can map the routes of Viking expeditions, view coins brought from the Middle East to the East Midlands, and explore their heritage further with artefacts and jewellery worn by the Viking women that settled in the East Midlands. ‘Danelaw Saga’ tells the story of Viking heritage hidden in plain sight, from place names in use since they were given by the Vikings to modern literature inspired by the East Midlands’ own Viking past. ‘Danelaw Saga’ uncovers the legacy of the Vikings on our doorstep. ‘Danelaw Saga’ has been jointly curated by Professor Judith Jesch and Dr Roderick Dale of the Centre for Study of the Viking Age, and by Manuscripts and Special Collections at the University of Nottingham. The Bringing Vikings back to the East Midlands project is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council.

Young people Signposted To Safer Sex. Young people have helped in the design and content of a new website which promotes safer sexual relationships and health. The C-Card scheme is a free and confidential advice and condom service that is aimed at young people aged up to 25 across Nottinghamshire. The C-Card scheme allows young people to get access to free condoms and ask any questions they have about sex, relationships and sexually transmitted infections. The advice is free and confidential and is aimed at helping young people make the right choice about their sexual health. The C-Card scheme is available from a range of places including health centres, GP practices, youth centres, colleges and schools and pharmacies. There is also an interactive map on the website which shows C-Card registration and collection points across the county. The website is being promoted as part of a wider campaign which will see posters at bus stops and bus shelters, supermarkets and information cards. The campaign is funded by Public Health and is being managed by Nottinghamshire County Council’s Youth Service. Councillor Stuart Wallace, Chairman of the Adult Social Care and Public Health Committee, at Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “This campaign will further raise the profile of the C-Card scheme to young people, offer them vital support and signpost them to relevant public health services.” Councillor Tracey Taylor, Vice-Chair of the Children and Young People’s Committee, at Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “We are very pleased that young people, through the Young People’s Board, have been involved in this initiative to ensure the right information and advice that young people want is included on the new website.” The website is: www.ccardnottinghamshire.co.uk

Local Lady Celebrates 100th Birthday Joan Taylor celebrated her 100th birthday recently at the Grange in Attenborough. A party was given to her with the staff and family and friends all in attendance. Joan was born in Redruth, Cornwall on 15th January 1918. She was one of three children and two step children. She was mainly brought up by her grandmother following the premature death of her mother. On leaving school Joan worked as a cashier at Timothy Whites before joining her aunt in the licensed trade. It was at the Red Lion in Helston that she met future husband George who was working away for a Nottingham firm. George and Joan were married in Attenborough Church in 1938 and set up home at 7 Bramcote Drive in Beeston. Their son Ken was born in 1941. In 1951 George teamed up with his old school friend (and local historian) Vern Richmond to form Taylor and Richmond Ltd who traded for many years at the bottom of Grove Avenue in Chilwell. Joan was a director of the family firm. George died aged 90 shortly after they had celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. Joan has two grandsons and seven great grandchildren (including triplet girls)
ranging in age from 9 to 20. She was still living at No. 7 until 2016. Before arriving at the Grange, Joan had been in hospital for nine weeks and her prognosis was not favourable. When asked how she managed to achieve her 100th birthday she is quick to praise Ken and wife Wendy for their regular visits and, above all, the amazing care and companionship she has received at the Grange. -Written by Ken, Joan’s son.
