Stapleford Community Group Food bank organiser is latest Nottinghamshire community hero He has supported residents with his own food bank which distributes food from a local supermarket and now he is being recognised for his community work by Nottinghamshire County Council. Richard MacRae, from Ilkeston Road, Stapleford, has been named as the latest Chairman’s Community Hero by county council Chairman Councillor Mrs Sue Saddington – her first award of its type since taking office in May. Nottinghamshire County Council recently launched its search for the Chairman’s Community Heroes, in order to celebrate and recognise the efforts of unsung community heroes who do outstanding work in their local area. Councillor Saddington had to choose from around a dozen nominees and was impressed by the efforts that Richard puts into his local community, as Chairman of the Stapleford Community Group. Among his achievements include helping local people with food and provisions from a local supermarket every week, helping reduce anti-social behaviour in the town and organising jobs fairs in the local community. Councillor Saddington said: “Richard clearly does a lot of diverse work in his local community and he is a very worthy winner of this award. I have read with interest about the various projects that he
24
is involved in and he can be rightly proud of his achievements which help make a real difference to Stapleford.” The Stapleford Community Group is an action group which meets regularly in different residents’ houses and is committed to improving life in the town. Richard, 46, said: “I am delighted to receive this award. There are lots of volunteers who do great things to help in their local communities and I feel that this award is for everyone who helps others and is not just for me. I also hope that this award can encourage others to think about volunteering and getting involved in community projects. It is a great feeling to receive this thank you.” Richard was nominated for the award by Stapleford Community Group Secretary Donna MacRae. She said: “Richard runs Stapleford Community Group for which I am the Secretary. He collects surplus food from the supermarket and makes sure it goes to others which he has been doing for over a year now and which in turn has helped hundreds of people. “He is in the process of organising his 14th job fair in the town which helps get many people back into work and training. He works with the youngsters to help them get away from anti-social behaviour, organises bus trips, estate tidy ups and litter picks, teaches CPR all over the place, and has helped to have community defibrillators installed all over the town. He will and does work with anyone to help make Stapleford a better place.” He also worked with the local young people’s centre to invite the Chayah Development Group to come and talk

WOLLATON CARE GROUP - CAN YOU HELP? Our ‘group’ consists of a fairly small number of people who live in the Wollaton area who arrange activities aimed at helping elderly people to enjoy a more active social life within the community. We have two Luncheon Clubs, held on each Wednesday and Thursday throughout the year, providing meals at a moderate cost. We arrange outings and visits and, by discussion, we may be able to arrange a limited number of home visits. We have recently lost a number of our clients due to illness and other circumstances and are therefore keen to recruit new members For further information please phone John Tordoff on 0115 9988306

PROMISING PROGRESS FOR BROXTOWE BUDGET
BROXTOWE BOROUGH COUNCIL has published its 2017/18 outturn financial position, with good progress made during the last financial year. “We’re pleased to report that our 17/18 out turn financial position has been very positive and put us in a good position for the future,” said Leader of the Council, Councillor Richard Jackson. “Thanks to good performance in a number of areas, working in a more commercially minded way and using our assets effectively, the Council is well placed to meet the medium term financial challenges and deliver on its priorities to provide good quality homes, protect the environment, make people feel safe, improve our town centres and make people healthier.” Key developments in 2017/18 include: • • • • • •
1,098 new homes given planning permission and 324 built – the highest number since 2008. A 13.57% reduction in fly tipping thanks to a successful litter and fly tipping action plan. Development of a new spa at Bramcote Leisure Centre and 3,372 children booked onto weekly swimming lessons. Improvements to five parks and open spaces across the Borough, with £0.5 million agreed for further improvements over the next two years. Achieved White Ribbon Accreditation for work to reduce domestic violence. Progress made on the redevelopment of Beeston Square.

Stapleford Community Group Stapleford is to kick off the Nottinghamshire Age Friendly Take A Seat Scheme at 10:30am on Thursday 19th July at Simply First, 200 Derby Road, Stapleford, NG97AY Age Friendly Nottinghamshire’s ‘Take a Seat’ initiative wants more shops, businesses and meeting places to have a seat available in case an older person needs to catch their breath and rest while they’re out shopping. The scheme aims to raise awareness of how older people sometimes struggle to access their local area because there isn’t enough seating available for them to rest. Advice is also provided on how to make premises more age friendly in other ways, such as making sure the floor is level and clutter free to prevent trips and slips, lighting is clear and bright, steps have a handrail, products on shelves are within easy reach, toilets are provided where possible and that any music is played at a moderate level. A ‘We are Age Friendly’ sticker will be displayed in all shops and premises taking part in the initiative. The sticker will reassure older shoppers that they will be given a warm welcome and offered a chair to have a sit and rest. The first business to sign up to the scheme in Stapleford was Simply First. The names of other Age Friendly businesses who have since signed up will
32
be listed at the ‘Take a Seat’ webpage: www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/takeaseat Stapleford Independent Councillor Richard MacRae has been out on the High Street talking to businesses about the importance of becoming Age Friendly and signed up many businesses who jumped at the chance to take part in this scheme. A third of older people are identified as lonely. Sadly, many become isolated because they find it increasingly difficult to walk from their homes to local shops and community venues. A lack of seating for them to rest when out can be a significant barrier to them leaving their home. Loneliness can also lead to depression and mental decline. Being an age friendly business also makes commercial sense for retailers. Studies have shown that: 60% of older people are concerned by the lack of seating in shopping areas 33% of older people would feel ashamed to ask for a seat in a public place. Annual high street losses of £4.5bn are predicted by 2030 if retailers fail to attract and retain older customers. For more information about this please email cllrrichardmacrae@gmail.com

The momentous War Requiem, the most profound statement of Benjamin Britten’s pacifist convictions, still has the power to move us almost 60 years after its first performance. With vocal lines reflecting the anguish of war, and orchestrally created sounds of firing guns and cannon, the tension is palpable, and is a cry from the heart. Contrast this with the clarity and beauty of Vaughan Williams’ Lark Ascending, written as the war began, evoking the sense of freedom for which millions would willingly give their lives.Organised by: Nottingham Harmonic Choir in partnership with Nottinghamshire County Council, The Royal British Legion and Nottingham City Council. Advance booking is essential. £12 - £25 Concessions, student and group discount available. Children FREE

HEROES HONOURED FOR ARMED FORCES DAY SOLDIERS joined the Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor Derek Burnett BEM to raise a specially commissioned Armed Forces Day Flag in Beeston today to mark a week of events being held across the country. The soldiers, from 170 (Infrastructure Support) Engineer Group Royal Engineers joined Councillor Burnett to raise the flag and address representatives from the Royal British Legion, Forces in the Community, Freemen, Aldermen, Past Mayors, Councillors and members of the public to show our support and recognise the contributions of all those who serve or have served in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces. At the same time, local authorities and over 3,000 members of the public, businesses and schools throughout the country also raised their own Armed Forces Day flags to honour the nation’s servicemen and women. This year’s Armed Forces Day took place on Saturday 30 June 2018, with Llandudno in Conwy, a North Wales seaside town, being chosen to host this year’s Armed Forces Day national event, to honour the British Armed Forces of past, present, service families, reservists and cadets. As part of Armed Forced Day celebrations, a Freedom of Entry Parade took place on Armed Forces Day on Saturday 30 June in Kimberley. Soldiers from 170 (Infrastructure Support) Engineer Group marched through Kimberley Town Centre to exercise their freedom of entry to the Borough of Broxtowe.

Grapevine Craft Corner Each month, Grapevine will be highlighting the creativity and craft skills of people living in our community. These are talented people who with their imagination and various skill levels can produce interesting items. More and more people are turning back to various crafts to relax, to get away from computers and the stress of daily living. This month the Grapevine Editor popped in to see Norma Wild from Stapleford (pictured)
“I make cushions and teddy bears to sell at craft fairs. The teddy bears I make are all individual and no two are the same. They can be dressed or as they are. The fabric uses is genuine mohair, which is very expensive to purchase, also used are cotter pins for the joints, and safety eyes, noses and fillings. Fabric can be priced from £30 to £100 per meter. Wedding bears are popular (complete with a bouquet of flowers).
54
You can commission a bear upon a payment of a deposit of £20, the total price is usually between £35 to £65 depending on fabric. Cushions are also available to order, cats and dogs being very popular, also hares and Alice in Wonderland.” To discuss you requirements, please call Norma Wild - 0115 9399377.

Local teen Emma Snow writes about various topics and events each month in the Grapevine. “A voice for the young people in our Community”. With the summer months in full swing, it’s likely that you are spending a lot of your time outside; relaxing with family and friends, going out exploring or even just being in the sunshine on your commute to work. For all 19 years of my life, I have been blessed with very pale skin and I have never been able to tan (maybe this is why my surname is Snow!?) If I spend too long in the sun without wearing SPF, I resemble a lobster. It took me YEARS to be able to accept the fact that I just won’t tan and that I really should protect my skin, with it being so vulnerable to the sun’s rays. As a child, all my friends would come back to school after the six week holidays looking like they had actually been on holiday, for me, not so much. Now I’m a little older and ever so slightly wiser, I have done a lot of reading and watched endless YouTube videos on the best way to protect my skin and I want to share what I have learnt with you! The are many benefits of spending time in the sun and with the right 58
balance, sunlight can trigger the release of hormones in your brain, such as serotonin which is associated with boosting your mood and keeping you calm and focused. Many of us in the UK don’t get enough sunlight exposure and therefore lack in Vitamin D, which is important for bone health especially in young children. Getting anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes of sunlight 2-3 times a week is enough to boost your Vitamin D levels. Whilst it is important to enjoy the sun, it is equally important to protect your skin from the sun’s rays, no matter what your age. For the first time in the UK in 2015, more than 10,000 people over the age of 55 were diagnosed with melanoma, according to Cancer Research UK, which is the most dangerous form of skin cancer. Rates of skin cancer have risen in the past 20 years, by 155% in people over the age of 55 and it’s also rising in younger people too, but at a rate of 63%. This is partly due to a lack of knowledge previously about sun protection, but we all now know that we need to use high factor sun-cream. Studies show that despite this, most of us still don’t use sun cream; only 14% of men and 30% of women report

using it. Prevention is better than cure. Younger skin is naturally more sensitive to the sun’s rays, but older skin also needs to be protected just as much. A combination of factors help protect your skin from the sun, especially when the sun is strong. Experts advise that you spend time in the shade, especially between 11am and 3pm in the UK. Cover up with clothes, a hat and sunglasses when you can, but of course this isn’t always possible. Ensure that sun cream is applied regularly with a protection level of at least SPF 15 and use it generously, replying regularly especially if it isn’t waterproof. If you choose to wear makeup, using a face SPF underneath your foundation will add an extra layer of protection as the skin on your face is very delicate. Getting young children to wear sun cream can often be a challenge (I know I hated wearing it) but finding a non-sticky formula that smells good will help with the tricky task. If you know you are protected in the sun, then you have less to worry about and more time to enjoy the sunny weather. Make the most of it because we don’t get much of it here in the UK!

Nottingham Warning for Imported Dogs Nottinghamshire residents considering importing a rare breed dog from abroad are being urged to check that it has been vaccinated against rabies and parasites to avoid expensive quarantine costs. The County Council’s Trading Standards team has the powers to place an illegally imported dog, cat or other mammal into quarantine for a minimum 21 days if it has not been microchipped, vaccinated against rabies and parasites, or does not have a valid pet passport under current UK and European legislation. The Council recently worked with a local resident who purchased a rare breed dog from Eastern Europe only to find the animal was vaccinated earlier than the required 12 weeks as set out by law.As a result, the owner will have to pay quarantine costs of up to £1,000 to protect the public. People who refuse to pay the costs in this situation could face the prospect of the animal being exported back to the country of origin or being euthanised. Councillor Gordon Wheeler, Chairman of Nottinghamshire County Council’s Communities and Place Committee, said: “Where possible it’s always best to buy a dog in the UK where you can visit the breeder and check out the animal before buying.
66
“However, if you’re buying from abroad you need to check with the breeder or importer and the paperwork that the dog has received the vaccinations at the right time along with the other requirements to avoid the heartache of the animal going into quarantine.” The Council has the following tips when looking for a dog in the UK: • always go to a reputable breeder and be prepared to be put on a waiting list • visit the puppy at home with its mother to see how the puppy behaves and the conditions it is being raised in • buy from a Kennel Club Assured Breeder if buying a pedigree dog as these breeders must follow rules to protect the health of the puppies they sell • ask to see the relevant health test certificates for the puppy’s parents • consider rehoming an older dog from an animal rescue centre. People can report concerns about an illegal imported animal by contacting the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on

The County Council’s Trading Standards team has received over 400 reports on Hall, scams from local residents in the last ey twelve months, though it is estimated m e that only 5 to 15 percent of scams are uk sture reported. aLast year Citizens Advice, which provides e national front line Trading Standards o s - Bramcoteadvice, found that almost three quarters es ming. n Goold, of people surveyed had been targeted by a scam in the previous two years. nd Common scams to be wary of amcote al is include: HMRC refund - criminals take 2017 advantage of HM Revenue and and Customs processing tax refunds after hthe end of the tax year by sending out 2. emails and text messages which have links one the taking victims to fake websites where as ys their personal and financial information rhe can be stolen. e Telephone Preference Service - a our common telephone cold calling scam from a company claiming to be from areas the the Telephone Preference Service asking victims to verify their bank details to mprevent their registration expiring. Transferring money to another country– a common email scam in various guises including a bogus inheritance to trick victims into parting with money or sharing bank or credit card details. Miracle cures – advertisements with fake testimonials promoting untested products claiming to cure a wide range of ailments or promote weight loss which may even be harmful. Doorstep crime – a wide-ranging scam which often targets older and vulnerable people by pressurising them into paying extortionate prices for unnecessary or substandard work or products. This can also involve doorstep criminals claiming to be from a trusted organisation to distract the victim whilst a burglary takes place. Fish sellers – a perennial doorstep scam where traders sell poor quality fish or hand large quantities of fish with a large bill when the buyer is led to believe they were buying small quantities. Fake police officers – cold calls claiming to be from the police investigating their bank where they ask the victim to transfer large sums of money. Investment scams – unsolicited phone calls, letters or emails inviting victims to invest a substantial amount of money, in some cases their life savings, in products or schemes that are either worthless or do not exist. Prize draws and lottery scams – victims are informed they have won a lottery jackpot or a prize draw but to access the winnings they have to pay a fee. Unfortunately, the lottery money or prize

does not exist. Councillor Gordon Wheeler, ViceChairman of Nottinghamshire County Council’s Communities and Place Committee, said: “Scams can leave lasting financial and psychological distress on victims, and often come with a stigma which leaves victims embarrassed and unwilling to report the crime. “Our advice is be very suspicious of all unsolicited mail, emails or telephone cold calls and say no to all doorstep tradespeople. “Legitimate companies will not call you to verify your financial details or demand a fee for a usually free service or a special offer, so never give your details out when you receive unsolicited requests.” The ‘Friends Against Scams’ scheme is helping to spread the word on how to spot and avoid a scam amongst local communities.

RECYCLE YOUR OLD SPECTACLES! Thanks to the local community, in the last four years Notts Derbys Hemlockstone Lions have collected and dispatched 15 000 pairs of spectacles as part of the Lions Clubs International British Isles & Ireland Spectacle Recycling Initiative, launched originally by the Lions Club of Chichester in 1967, today it sees nearly a third of a million pairs of used glasses collected, sorted and distributed to clinics and eye camps in communities across the world in partnership with Medico France. The project also raises financial support for eye related projects at home and overseas by recycling scrap metal from spectacles that are broken or unsuitable for recycling, sponsoring eye camps in Nepal and India for example. Lions Clubs were formed 100 years ago to serve their local communities and support those in need locally, nationally and around the world - recycling spectacles is just one of the many initiatives supported by them. Please help us to continue to support this worthwhile project. £730 raised and donated to the Getaway Club in Stapleford. A cheque of £730 was awarded recently to the Getaway Club, the money was raised by the Stapleford and Bramcote Combined Services and patrons of the Old Cross Inn in Stapleford. £500 was from the Combined Services, and £230 was from the Old Cross. The presentation took place at the Old Cross which saw volunteers and members of the Getaway club enjoying a social evening together. The Getaway club is ran purely on donations, and the money collected enables trips to the seaside and pays for various other expenses. Dedicated volunteers run the club and Chris Matthews Chairman of the Combined Services club said ‘ The volunteers do an amazing job running the Getaway Club and I can’t praise them highly enough, money is always tight, so we have chosen this club as one of our charities. We fund raise throughout the year to give as much money as we can to keep the club running, we also help with various other charities. All of the money we raise go back into the community. We fund raise by organizing walks, trails, quiz nights, raffles, we also help in and round the communities “. The Stapleford and Bramcote Combined Service Club is made up of ex service men and women, ex firemen and women, and ex police who meet on the first Sunday of the month at 11am at the Stapleford Conservative Club. Over the years they have raised over £30,000 for the community. They welcome new members, ex services or not, and families of ex servicemen and military who would benefit from friendship and support , or may want to help others in the community. Please pop in to one of their meetings to see what they are all about , all new members welcomed! They also have a facebook page with all fundraising events on there.

Grown Ups Choice Standpoint by Derek Thompson This is the first in the SpyChaser series featuring Thomas Bladen and they are all well worth a read, they are set in modern London and Yorkshire and have a wonderful cast of interesting and complex characters. I particularly liked the ‘Family’ who are minor parts in the larger story but bring a great depth and great humour to the tense tale. If you like a good thriller with some unexpected twists and turn this is a really well paced and carefully written series. I thoroughly enjoyed them all.
Children’s Choice Escape from Nettle Farm by Justin Davis THs is really lovely tale for children that are staring to read confidently on their own, there are a few pictures, but it is a proper chapter book. The story is around a puppy who escapes from his unpleasant surroundings and starts and adventure to find some new owners. It’s exciting and well written, without being too scary. There is a second book int the series planned and we will definitely be reading it. NEW! Virtual Book Club
We have a new book club held online, open to anyone that loves books, the monthly meeting takes place online so you can take part from the bath, bed, garden and I often wear my pjs! The major difference is that the author attends these meetings so you can ask all your questions. You also receive a welcome pack, monthly freebie and a friendly facebook group.
