Jobs for the garden. Create a composting area. If you haven’t already then try setting up a compost area in your garden. This could simply be a ready-made compost bin or you could build a compost bin yourself using spare bits of wood. Not only will you have somewhere to put your garden waste but your plants will benefit from the rich compost created when it all breaks down! Make sure you have a good mixture of grass clippings, vegetable peelings, paper and woody prunings. To help the process along you’ll need to turn your compost with a garden fork each month to keep it aerated. Hunt down garden pests now. Hunting down and removing hibernating pests now can save a lot of trouble come spring and summer. Take a closer look at the crowns of your perennial plants and you may find slugs, snails and aphid colonies sheltering for the winter. If you still haven’t cleared last year’s pots of summer bedding then do this now and be on the look-out
for the white vine weevil larvae, which live in the compost and feed on plant roots. Destroy any you find and be prepared to treat for vine weevils this year, with an appropriate solution from your local garden centre. Awards for green, clean neighbourhood projects. Communities who are working together to make their area a greener and cleaner place to live are invited to sign up for ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ – part of the Royal Horticultural Society’s Britain in Bloom campaign. Last year, 51 groups from Nottingham received awards to celebrate their efforts in brightening up their own patch of the city. This year’s campaign in Nottingham is again backed by Capital One, which will give a £25 voucher for Woodthorpe Park Plant Shop for each group to be assessed. The IYN awards encourage communities to work together to improve their area through gardening and other environmental initiatives. Entry is free. A wide range of groups get involved, including; community gardens, streets, sheltered housing complexes, Friends’ groups from local parks, Neighbourhood Watch schemes and churches. Participants report a better environment, improved community spirit and pride in the area as well as less anti-social behaviour. Windmill Community Gardens off Aspley Lane has taken part in IYN for several years. It is known as the Climate Friendly Garden, with fascinating horticultural experiments going on in every corner, and a team of dedicated multicultural volunteers. Garden worker Tracey Lloyd said: “The ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ award gives us a great outside view of the work we do at the Windmill Community Gardens, and the volunteers really value the award as a recognition of all their hard work.” Each community sets its own targets and works at its own pace. Pairs of volunteer assessors will visit each group in July or August to see what progress has been made and to give ideas and suggestions. Marks are given in three areas – Community Participation, Environmental Responsibility and Gardening Achievement. More information is available from Nottingham in Bloom on 0115 8764985 or bloom@ nottinghamcity.gov.uk. Rupert MacInnes, Vice President External Affairs, Capital One, said: “Capital One is proud to support this important local initiative. As a Nottingham-based company, we have a strong culture for supporting our local community.“The ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ awards are a great way to ensure local green spaces reflect the region, and we look forward to hosting the presentation ceremony at our Station Street headquarters.”Councillor Malcolm Wood, Chair of the Nottingham in Bloom Working Group, said: “We are grateful for the support from Capital One in helping to celebrate the efforts of these local groups of friends and neighbours who work together to improve their area.“A wide variety of groups can participate in the ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ campaign and I’d encourage more to join in. Official accreditation from the Royal Horticultural Society through IYN is not only worthwhile in its own right but can also support groups’ applications for funding and for other awards.”

WOLLATON CARE GROUP - CAN YOU HELP? Our ‘group’ consists of a fairly small number of people who live in the Wollaton area who arrange activities aimed at helping elderly people to enjoy a more active social life within the community. We have two Luncheon Clubs, held on each Wednesday and Thursday throughout the year, providing meals at a moderate cost. We arrange outings and visits and, by discussion, we may be able to arrange a limited number of home visits. We have recently lost a number of our clients due to illness and other circumstances and are therefore keen to recruit new members For further information please phone John Tordoff on 0115 9988306

Zip and Splash at Broadgate Park’s New Play Area BEESTON CHILDREN will get to enjoy exciting new play experiences as a zip wire and a water play area provide the crowning glory of the brand new Broadgate Park Play Area. On Saturday 28th April families joined the Mayor of Broxtowe, Councillor Halimah Khaled MBE at Broadgate Park to launch the finishing touches. Funded with contributions from WREN (Waste Recycling Environmental), United Living North, Vinshire North and Tesco Bags of Help, along with an allocation from the Council’s Pride in Parks budget, the play area is designed to be accessible to a wide range of ages and abilities. It now features sand and water play tables, a giant swing, trampoline, climbing units and a 30 metre zip wire. Manufactured by South Yorkshire-based Sutcliffe Play, the state of the art equipment was fitted by local installers, Land Restoration Services. The improvements come as part of the Council’s Pride in Parks initiative, with £500,000 being dedicated to improving parks, open spaces, and play areas throughout Broxtowe. Chair of the Leisure and Environment Committee, Councillor Shane Easom said:“I really hope that the families of Beeston and the surrounding areas are looking forward to enjoying the new and improved Broadgate Park Play Area. It’s a chance for the kids to keep active and have fun in the great outdoors.” “This is the first park to benefit from the funding we’ve dedicated and we cannot wait to start work on the other parks and opens spaces throughout the borough.”
30
Cheryl Raynor, WREN’s local grant manager said: “It’s wonderful to see something we have funded finally open and ready to make such a difference to children in the local area. WREN is always happy to consider grant applications for projects that benefit local communities and this is a great example of what can be achieved.” WREN is a not-for-profit business that awards grants for community, conservation and heritage projects from funds donated by FCC Environment through the Landfill Communities Fund. For more information about WREN funding contact Cheryl Raynor at cheryl.raynor@wren.org.uk or visit http://www.wren.org.uk/. For more information, please contact Broxtowe Borough Council on 0115 917 3643, email grounds@broxtowe.gov.uk or visit www.broxtowe.gov.uk/parks.
The Mayor of Broxtowe along with Parks and Open Spaces Officer Chris Riley, WREN’s Local Grant Manager Cheryl Raynor and her children Emma and Lucy Raynor, Chair of the Leisure and Environment Committee Councillor Shane Easom, Deputy Leader Councillor Mel Crow, and Ava Whitehead open Broadgate Park’s new zip wire.

Looking for a great pub - restaurant that cooks delicious food at great prices? Try The Earl of Chesterfield Arms at Shelford, Nottingham. by Christine Gough Grapevine Editor
The pub and restaurant is owned by new owners Julian Benton, Lisa Miller (from The Staunton Arms) and exEngland cricketer Chris Broad with their fantastic team to look after you at this first-class Nottinghamshire country pub. Both my husband and I decided to go for a run out to Shelford, a picturesque rural village near Radcliffe on Trent and Gunthorpe, not too far away, about half an hour from Sandiacre. We visited The Earl of Chesterfield, a cosy pub with a restaurant serving a great selection of homecooked food including Sunday lunch. I would certainly recommend a trip there, the food was superb, and we will visit again. Our table was in the olde worlde restaurant part of the pub, next to a huge open fire , I noticed that instead of being cramped at the table, (having to move your chair every time someone wanted to walk past), that there was plenty of space between us and the next table. The staff were friendly and the service was excellent, efficient and relaxed. I did notice that when one of the tables had been vacated, a member of staff came along to clean, not with a spray bottle (which usually leaves the sticky residue on the table, accompained with a cloth
34
that had seen better days and used on every table), but with a bucket of clean hot soapy water, clean sponge and roll of paper towel to dry the table, with not one dirty cloth in sight ! We didn’t have to wait long to be served and our choice was a three course meal off the Sunday Menu for £18.50 each. I chose Starter: Traditional prawn cocktail, Marie Rose sauce & fresh granary bread. Main: Roast Beef with Yorkshire pudding with all the trimmings. Dessert: Strawberry cheesecake, kiwi coulis & granola crumb. My husband chose, Starter: Crispy fried ham hock & chicken terrine, onion puree, sweet potato crisps. Main: Pan seared Seabass, Parmentier Potatoes, Bacon & Pea fricassee. Dessert: Fig & blood orange sponge, crème anglaise. The roast beef I had was delicious , thick sliced and tender, the gravy was literally the best I’ve had in any restaurant. All the food we had was first class.

For the price £18.50 per person for three course Sunday meal , it was definately well worth the visit!. A two course Sunday lunch meal is £16.50 per person. All menu’s feature the best English classics ,as well as more modern dishes, using the finest local and seasonal ingredients. Whether you wish to dine in the more formal surroundings of the restaurant or enjoy the more relaxed atmosphere of the bar, you are welcome to choose from either the main A La Carte or Light Bites menu. Reservations are advised to guarantee a table in the restaurant area and private dining areas are also available, ideal for a celebration with friends or a family get together. The Earl of Chesterfield Arms is a family pub, and children are welcome in both the pub and restaurant areas. Highchairs are available and we request you book these in advance. Dogs are also welcome. There is also a beer garden for the summer. At the Earl of Chesterfield Arms they have an excellent range of cask ales, which offer the best from both national and regional brewers. They constantly refresh their range to ensure they offer the best, including Blue Monkey, Harvest Pale, Draft Bass and Adnams. Keep a look out for their mini-beer festivals too! Wine: 25 bins come from the best and most famous regions of the world. Instead of the obvious classics often over promised they have chosen wines that offer the regional character from lesser known areas or villages.

Grapevine Craft Corner Each month, Grapevine will be highlighting the creativity and craft skills of people living in our community. These are talented people who with their imagination and various skill levels can produce interesting items. More and more people are turning back to various crafts to relax, to get away from computers and the stress of daily living. This month the Grapevine Editor popped in to see Linda Grice from Bramcote (pictured) who loves making mice. These cute little characters are knitted in beautiful detail which shows the time, effort and commitment Linda has put into them. Although small, they can sometimes take days to make them. Linda has made numerous ones over the years and has given them to friends, family and people who maybe need a little “lift in their lives. Some of them are showcased on a small wooden plinth, these are the special ones, made for special occasions. Linda recently made a Suffragette mouse(see middle picture) to honour the 100 year anniversary for the vote of women in this country.

Linda presented Grapevine with a mouse, complete with a delivery bag containing the Grapevine magazines pen and notebook!,which now sits in the Editors office. (Pictured right)

BRAMCOTE CHILDREN SOW POPPIES TO COMMEMORATE FIRST WORLD WAR LOCAL CHILDREN IN BRAMCOTE helped sow poppies in King George V Park in Bramcote to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War. Representatives from local schools and youth groups, including the Cubs, Scouts, and Brownies, joined the Mayor of Broxtowe Councillor Halimah Khaled MBE, Bramcote Ward Councillors Martin Plackett and Jan Goold, Reverend Paul Reynolds Vicar of St Michael and All Angels Bramcote and Chair of Bramcote Conservation Society Rob Greer in sowing the poppies. The idea was developed from a national initiative by the Scouts to plant poppies around the country and follows the planting of a similar stream in Hall Om Wong Park in Kimberley. When the poppies flower later this summer, they will provide a poignant visual tribute to those who fought during the war. Fifteen black crosses, each bearing the name of a soldier from Bramcote village who died in the War, were planted within the stream in memory of those who lost their lives. The crosses have been made locally by Allan Foster of the Bramcote Conservation Society and the poppy seeds was provided and cultivated by Broxtowe Borough Council. Various commemorative events will be taking place in the Borough over the coming months to mark the centenary with details added regularly on https:// www.broxtowe.gov.uk/worldwaricentenary. There is also an online Book of Remembrance to share memories of loved ones who were alive during wartime or for people to leave their thoughts and messages at https://www.broxtowe.gov.uk/worldwaronecentenarybook.

Declutter, sell and make money. Decluttering is usually the first step people take to simplify their lives. It is often the easiest and most effective place to begin. Removing the excess from our homes naturally encourages us to look at the more challenging, often hidden things. Decluttering teaches us how to let go and create more needed space. Owning less helps us save time and feel lighter. Look for items to can sell on and make some extra cash. If you feel overwhelmed with stuff or struggle when it comes to letting go, start with some of the items that don’t come with major emotional attachment. 1. Clothes you don’t wear. Most of us have too much of it, but we still wear the same things over and over again. Donate the jeans that don’t zip. Bin the socks with holes. Remove outdated fashion. And if you have an extra coat or hat, give it away. Good items that have never been worn, sell them. 2. Junk drawer. Most people have one. You can easily remove the items that have no name, no place, and no meaning instead of saving them just in case you remember why you put them there in the first place. If you don’t know today, you won’t know tomorrow. 3. Lotions and potions. Get all of your lotions, potions, makeup, shampoo, and other products into one place. Put the things you use every day back where they belong. Bin the rest (Most plastic bottles can be recycled).Think how tidy your bedroom and bathroom will be !
54
4. One off items that don’t match. Think cassette tapes without a cassette player, Tupperware tops without containers, and odd socks etc. 5. Kid stuff. to get your kids into decluttering, make it fun for them. Announce a prize for every 10 things they can collect for donation. The prize can be a family activity or your child’s favourite meal. If you have more than one child, offer a bonus if everyone hits their goal to encourage them to work together. 6. Extra dishes. If you have two sets of dishware, silverware, or glassware, one can go. If you love your good dishes, use those everyday. If they are stuck in a box somewhere and you never use them, give to someone who will or sell them. 9. Things that bring you down. Sentimental items are usually saved for later on in the decluttering process, but letting go of things that remind you of people, places, and events that have hurt you in the past will make room for more joyful memories. Try clearing out one wardrobe one weekend, then a drawer the next etc, that way it won’t feel daunting and tiring.

Local teen Emma Snow writes about various topics and events each month in the Grapevine. “A voice for the young people in our Community”. Five easy ways to save the planet. We all have things going on in our lives, whether you’re wrapped up in work, busy at school or focused on your family life. Sometimes life takes over and you have more important things to be thinking about rather than five ways to save our planet. But it’s so incredibly important to look out of your bubble and to recognise what’s going on in the outside world. We just can’t carry on as we are; we only have one planet and it’s our responsibility to look after it. It’s encouraging that David Attenborough’s Blue Planet programme has made people more aware of how beautiful our planet really is and that we have to protect it. So, I’ve come up with five small things you can do to make a difference. If enough of us do it, then we will help to protect our planet. My first easy way to save the planet is to recycle more. It can be confusing to know what you can and can’t put in the recycling bin, but most packaging will tell you if it can be recycled or not. You can recycle most plastics, metal and glass. If you’re unsure, just check online. Make it easier for yourself and have separate bins in your house for things you can and can’t recycle. Make sure you clean your rubbish though, it needs to be clean and dry for it to be recycled. A quick rinse in soapy water will do just fine and be
58
sure to flatten cardboard boxes to save on space in your bin. My second way is to stop buying so much plastic. We’re using far too much! It’s a vicious circle: if we didn’t use so much plastic, we wouldn’t have to recycle as much or use as much energy in the process, thus damaging the planet even further. Simple things such as using a refillable water bottle instead of buying plastic bottles can make a huge difference. Invest in a filter, or you can even buy water bottles which have a water filter built into them if you’re concerned about chlorine levels in water. However, water straight from the tap is perfectly safe to drink. If you don’t like the taste of tap water, then chop up a lemon or strawberries into a jug of water, keep it in the fridge overnight and top up your water bottle in the morning. It’s tasty, and not damaging the planet at the same time! Another simple tip is making sure you always carry plastic bags in case you do a spot of shopping whilst you are out. Thousands of plastic bags end up in our landfills, with plastic bags taking up to 1000 years to bio-degrade. A bit of a controversial one and I’m not preaching, but cutting down on your meat consumption can really help the planet too. The rearing of cattle is one of the biggest contributors to methane greenhouse gas emissions and global warming. Lowering your meat intake or switching to vegetarianism or veganism will really help the planet, plus there are so many yummy and healthy alternatives to a meat diet.

Using too much water is a typical error we all make; spending too long in the shower or keeping the tap on for too long when washing your face. We are so privileged in the UK to just turn on the tap and have clean water, but this doesn’t mean that we should take advantage of it. As the world population increases exponentially, the pressure on natural water supplies increases. Simple actions such as having a shower instead of a bath, but not spending too long in the shower. If we all change our habits, no matter how small, then we will make a difference. My final tip is to turn off your lights. It’s probably one of the easiest ways to lower your own bills and save the environment at the same time. Try to remember to turn appliances off and not leave them on standby as this wastes electricity. If you’re not in the room, turn the light off and try to only use the artificial lights if really necessarily. These are only a few tips but there are lots more ways to help save the planet. Look around you and work out what you can do to make a difference. We only have one planet and we should look after it. Article by Emma Snow Follow @_EmmaSnow on Twitter for more updates.

Past President Paul Burrows says, " from day one we have been inundated with so many people offering us tools and other equipment of all shapes and sizes. We have already despatched two full vans which equates to over 6 tonnes of tools. They will all very soon be helping someone in Africa to learn and carry out a new trade which in turn allows them to become financially self sufficient in supporting their families. The response has been so great that we will continue to collect tools whilst ever people are generous enough to offer them to us." If anyone has any tools they wish to donate please contact Paul on p.burrows37@ntlworld.com

Outstanding Wollaton school to launch expansion plans after £4m funding bid success
A Nottingham academy is celebrating after the City Council helped secure £4m to fund a proposal to expand by rch Hall, 450 places. The Fernwood School, in ey Wollaton, has successfully applied for m e uk around £3m of funding through the sture Government’s Condition Improvement aFund (CIF), which allocates money to e improve and expand school buildings. o s - Bramcote The bid, supported by an additional £1m es ming. Basic Needs Funding contribution from n Goold, Nottingham City Council, is significant nd because of its value. The Department for amcote al is Education’s maximum CIF allocation for a secondary school project is £4m – the 2017 minimum is £50,000. and Fernwood, which has current capacity hfor 1,050 pupils, will now undertake 2. a wide-ranging consultation on the one the proposal to expand and, if approved, as ys it will enable more pupils to access the rhe school within the next few years. e It is an Ofsted Outstanding-rated school our which is extremely popular and hugely over-subscribed. Close to 90% of parents areas the in its catchment area make Fernwood their first preference when applying for a msecondary place. pin There is also a clear need for additional secondary capacity in Wollaton, and day at Fernwood is committed to providing more places for its feeder schools and the local community. 4 These include Fernwood Primary, which has recently expanded to increase its intake; Middleton Primary, which is currently being expanded; and Southwold Primary, which was expanded in 2014.
68
Tracy Rees, headteacher at The Fernwood School, said: “I’m thrilled that this bid has been successful and we can now press on with our plans to expand the school. Over the past three years there have been children in our catchment area who have not been able to secure a place at Fernwood. With this proposed expansion we shouldn’t have any more disappointed families. “I’m very proud that Fernwood is recognised as an Outstanding school by Ofsted and I know how popular we are with parents, both inside and outside our catchment area. We want to be able to offer places at our school for as many pupils as possible. “I’d like to thank Nottingham City Council for their support in applying for this grant, and for backing it with £1m towards the project. I would also like to thank CBP Architects for their support with planning this exciting development.” The City Council has been planning since 2009 to increase school places and has invested more than £40m in expansion projects to boost capacity at Good and Outstanding-rated schools. The growth in pupil numbers is now beginning to impact on the secondary sector. By the time all year groups are full, more than 5,000 places will have been created at 26 schools in Nottingham. Expansion projects are currently under way in

Bilborough, Bestwood and Wollaton. Councillor Sam Webster, Portfolio Holder for Business, Education and Skills at Nottingham City Council, said: “This is fantastic news. Fernwood was competing for funding with schools right across the country so for the bid to not only be successful, but for such a significant amount, just shows how important this expansion is.“Our £1m contribution to the project again underlines our strategy of seeking to help Good and Outstanding-rated schools to expand where there is increasing demand.“Unfortunately, the Government has removed the power for local authorities to build new schools to keep up with an ever-increasing need for places. Therefore we will continue to seek opportunities to expand current provision wherever possible.” Councillor Webster continued: “Parents rightly expect good school places, close to home, and that’s what we’ve been working hard to deliver. I’m also proud that we have the highest proportion of Outstanding-rated schools in the East Midlands – more and more parents are choosing to send their children to our schools. “Demand continues to increase in Nottingham but we’ve been working for almost a decade to provide additional places. Last week we saw that 97% of parents got their first or second-choice primary school, and that shows that our careful planning and investment was necessary and is working.” Nottingham City Council.

RECYCLE YOUR OLD SPECTACLES! Thanks to the local community, in the last four years Notts Derbys Hemlockstone Lions have collected and dispatched 15 000 pairs of spectacles as part of the Lions Clubs International British Isles & Ireland Spectacle Recycling Initiative, launched originally by the Lions Club of Chichester in 1967, today it sees nearly a third of a million pairs of used glasses collected, sorted and distributed to clinics and eye camps in communities across the world in partnership with Medico France. The project also raises financial support for eye related projects at home and overseas by recycling scrap metal from spectacles that are broken or unsuitable for recycling, sponsoring eye camps in Nepal and India for example. Lions Clubs were formed 100 years ago to serve their local communities and support those in need locally, nationally and around the world - recycling spectacles is just one of the many initiatives supported by them. Thrilling crime reads for May Nottingham Libraries Use your Library! Belinda Bauer, Snap: 11-year-old Jack and his two sisters sit in their broken-down car, waiting for their mother to come back and rescue them. “Jack's in charge” she said. I won't be long. She never comes back. And life as the children know it is changed forever. Sharon Bolton, The Craftsman: Florence's career was made when she convicted coffinmaker Larry Glassbrook of a series of child murders 30 years ago. Larry confessed to the crimes; it was an open and shut case. Now he is dead, and events from the past are starting to repeat themselves. Did she get it wrong all those years ago? Simon Brett, A Deadly Habit: Rehearsals in a new West End play are disrupted by a sudden, violent death and once again struggling actor Charles Paris finds himself playing detective. Charles Cumming, Man Between: When successful novelist Kit Carradine is approached by MI6 and asked to carry out a simple task on behalf of his country while attending a literary festival in Morocco he willingly takes a leap into the unknown. Action Fraud warns football fans ahead of 2018 World Cup The 2018 FIFA World Cup, which takes place from 14 June – 15 July, is an opportunity for fraudsters to take advantage of unsuspecting fans. Between 2013 and 2015, over 600 reports were made to Action Fraud in relation to the 2014 World Cup.Football fans should be cautious and Take Five before purchasing goods and services online. The worldwide demand for match tickets, accommodation and flight tickets throughout the competition is expected to be high. Action Fraud is warning those planning to travel to be cautious when buying tickets or accommodation because the event is likely to be targeted by fraudsters looking to take advantage of unsuspecting fans. Fraudsters will likely be posing as: * Official World Cup ticket vendors or private individuals attempting to sell on a match ticket via an online marketplace. *A fraudulent website or operator offering non-existent flights or other transport to host cities. *An accommodation booking service, hotel or operator, offering seemingly convenient accommodation in one of the host cities for the duration of the game. *Lottery or competition organisers claiming that you’ve won a prize or cash related to the tournament. Director of Action Fraud, Pauline Smith, said: “The number of reports made to Action Fraud following the 2014 World Cup show that fraudsters will try every trick in the book to take advantage of people at what should be an exciting time and event.“It is crucial that you take some time to follow some basic checks designed to protect you from falling victim to fraud.“If you think you have been a victim of fraud, report it to Action Fraud.” A spokesperson for FIFA said: “FIFA regards the illicit sale and distribution of tickets as a very serious issue and it is reminding all football fans that FIFA.com/tickets is the only official and legitimate website from which to buy 2018 FIFA World Cup tickets. For hospitality tickets the online official source is: https://hospitality.fifa.com/hospitality2018. “FIFA has received various complaints and inquiries by customers of non-authorised ticket sales platforms, and has consistently confirmed that these companies cannot guarantee access to the stadiums as the respective tickets may be cancelled. In sof ar customers are at risk of investing a high amount of money (also for travelling and accommodation) without having the certainty to actually being able to attend the matches.”
