Thorough Clean Ever Seen Or It’s Free”!
That’s right, the most thorough cleaning ever. My carpet and upholstery cleaning is the best and most thorough you could ever have – if you don’t agree I won’t accept your payment.
Along with the purchase of your home and family car, your soft furnishings are one of the largest investments you will make. Professional cleaning of your furnishings on a regular basis will extend their life considerably as well as keeping them hygienic and looking good.
4 Reasons Why You Should Choose My Company To Clean & Protect Your Family’s Health 1. Thorough Cleaning – My method doesn’t leave any residue or cause shrinkage. It cleans down to the base of your carpet removing harmful bacteria leaving your carpet clean and healthy.
2. Honest Pricing – I promise no high-pressure sales gimmicks. The prices I quote you are fully inclusive of cleaning products and labour. A full complete clean AND no hidden extras.
3. Protection of your soft Furnishings - Your valuable soft furnishings will stay cleaner longer, vacuum easier and have improved stain resistance with our carpet and upholstery protectors.
4. Long Standing Reputation – My company enjoys a reputation which is second to none, many of our customers not only come back to us time and again but recommend us to their family and friends.

Hospice hails its heroes as it celebrates its charity challengers of 2017 Staff at Nottinghamshire Hospice have paid tribute to volunteers who ran, climbed, biked and skydived their way to raising a n incredible £26,000 for the charity during 2017.The 49 charity challenge fundraisers were honoured at a recent awards events hosted by the hospice, in Woodborough Road, Nottingham, to say thank you for their efforts. Attended by the Sheriff of Nottingham, Councillor Glyn Jenkins and Great Britain two times World Champion para-triathlete Steve Judge, the event heard how many of the volunteers had pushed their bodies and minds to the limit, often in memory of a loved one who had benefitted from the care and professionalism of the hospice’s staff. They included a woman who lost four stone before performing a skydive – raising £1,000 in the process – a husband and wife team who ran the Nottingham Marathon and another volunteer who raised £3,000 by walking along the Great Wall of China. Another fundraiser honoured on the night was 29-year-old Amy Wesson from Clifton, who raised £2,000 by running the Ikano Robin Hood Half Marathon – her first road race - in September. She signed up for the event with a friend and

chose to use it as a way to raise money for the hospice in return for the care its staff showed to her beloved grandfather, Harrold Wesson. Sadly, Harold died, aged 82, at the start of September and his funeral was held just six days before Amy lined up on the start line. She said: “Lots of people decide to raise money for a good cause in memory of someone who has already died, but my granddad was still alive when I decided to raise money for the hospice, simply because he told me what a wonderful place it is. “I nearly didn’t run because it was so soon after his funeral but I felt that I would be letting so many people who’d sponsored me down by pulling out. “It was very emotional during the race and I thought of my grandad on the way round, but I felt amazing when I completed it.” Mr Judge, who knows a bit about overcoming challenges himself, having battled back from losing his right leg in a car crash to becoming a champion triathlete, also paid tribute to the volunteers. He said: “It was amazing to hear some of the stories of the volunteers and how they overcame fears or pushed themselves beyond what they thought possible in order to raise what is a tremendous amount of money.” Founded in 1980, Nottinghamshire Hospice

cares for hundreds of adults who have terminal and life-limiting illnesses, as well as their families and carers, every year. Rowena Naylor-Morrell, CEO of Nottinghamshire Hospice, said: “Whether they ran around the city or took to the skies, none of our work would be possible without our volunteer fundraisers so getting them together to say thank you is the very least that we can do. “The vast majority of our money comes from donations and when you consider we need to raise £2.7m each year to deliver our current service to our patients and their families, you can understand just how much we rely on other people’s generosity. “Everybody who raises money for us has a story to tell, whether they have someone special in mind or they are doing it to prove something to themselves or others, so it was wonderful to meet them and find out more.” To find out more about its Challenge Events for 2018 or any other aspect of fundraising for Nottinghamshire Hospice contact the fundraising team on 0115 910 1008 or email fundraising@nottshospice.org Photo: Top 1) Nottinghamshire Hospice fundraiser Amy Wesson, left, with her certificate, which bears the name of her beloved grandfather, Harold Wesson, alongside the Sherriff of Nottingham, Councillor Glyn Jenkins, and Amy’s cousin, Whitney Wesson. 2) Sherriff of Nottingham Councillor Glyn Jenkins (left) and two times World Champion para-triathlete Steve Judge, who presented the awards to 49 charity challengers who raised a combined £26,000 for Nottinghamshire Hospice this year. Every time you go to make a stitch, give the needle a quarter turn to help prevent tangling. Nail polish isn’t just used for your nails but is also a great idea to secure your clothes button threads. With just a few dab of it, it can already prevent a lot of those clothes button threads from fraying.

Care and support at home: Choosing a Care Provider 2. One of the most important aspects of care provision is a clear understanding of needs and requirements. This should lead to a conversation about how the needs can be met (options) and then an agreement about the Care Plan to be put in place to support the needs. Although most of us might find it difficult to describe the precise needs it is important to describe as much as possible about the problems an individual might have or the type of help they require. A good company will listen and ask the “right” questions in order to better understand the needs and any previous history or existing conditions. They should talk about options, put forward ideas, and suggest the best way of delivering care and support, including experience of how they have met the needs of other people in a similar position. The Care Plan must contain details about the individual receiving the care; their background, likes and dislikes, routines, medical conditions and all other aspects that are important to the day to day care activities. It should also go beyond daily tasks and describe the outcomes and goals. This is, what are we trying to achieve beyond the day to day care or support needs? In the case of somebody coming out of hospital the goal might be to achieve the level of independence and confidence they had before the event that led to their admission. For somebody who has had to give up driving due to a medical
42
condition or age the goal might be to facilitate their ability to get to places they used to get to. In many instances the goal might simply be to maintain somebody’s independence and well being in order to ensure they feel comfortable and happy. The Care Plan should also be a “live” document, reviewed regularly and updated to reflect changes in needs and goals as well as those that might have led to different or increased medication in order to inform not only the Caregivers supporting the person but also paramedics that might be called in an emergency situation. The Care Plan will be one of the elements in a Client Journal to be kept at a Client’s home. It will contain information regarding the care provider, including contact names and telephone numbers, as well as all relevant forms to record medication, expenses, visitors, and accidents or incidents. The Client Journal will also be used by the Caregivers to record details of each visit. The entries in the log should, as a minimum, contain; name of Caregiver, start and end times, medication, food prepared and eaten, expenses, and anything else relevant. It is important that Caregivers, in addition to logging the basics, also provide a brief description of the person in terms of mood, speech, appetite, etc. The ability to describe how the person “is” or behaves during a visit can be very useful to the next Caregiver (if different) and more important, provide an early

There is always someone ready to talk to you with practical advice and support day and night on: Nottingham (0115) 925 7647 Admissions can be made to the refuge at any time. If we are unable to admit you we can always suggest other agencies to contact. Our refuge is a pleasant and secure home where women and children can be helped to cope and recover from the trauma of family breakdown associated with violence or abuse. We can accept up to seven families at any time. Each family has a private family room and the refuge is never overcrowded. Midlands Women’s Aid workers will not tell you what decisions to make or what to do with your life. Instead our workers will: support you and work with you to help you feel in control of your own life and your own decisions we have a lot of experience and information which we will use to help you find the right path for you if we can’t answer all of your questions or provide you with all the help and support you need, then we will know other agencies that can. BROXTOWE SUPPORTS NATIONAL ANTI-DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CAMPAIGN WHITE RIBBON PLEDGES will be made across Broxtowe as the Borough Council encourages employees, Councillors, partners, and local residents to pledge never to commit, condone or remain silent about domestic violence. Each year the campaign seeks to educate and raise awareness of violence against women and urges as many people as possible to wear the ribbon for a week starting on 25th November, the International Day for the Eradication of Violence Against Women. Domestic abuse isn't just physical. It's about someone you know trying to control your life. This could be a partner, ex-partner, or someone in the family. It can be financial, psychological, emotional or sexual. Living with it can affect long term wellbeing and self-esteem and if children are living in the same house, they will be affected too. The Crime Survey for England and Wales estimates that 7.7% of women and 4.4% of men experienced any type of domestic abuse in the financial year ending March 2016. This is equivalent to an estimated 1.3 million female victims and 716,000 male victims. For every three victims of domestic abuse, two will be female, one will be male. The Council works regularly with Broxtowe Women’s Project, Midlands Women’s Aid, and Women’s Aid Integrated Services to help women dealing with domestic abuse. It is also working towards White Ribbon accreditation with the White Ribbon Campaign UK. For further information please get in touch with our Communities Team on e-mail at spc@broxtowe.gov.uk or by calling 0115 917 3492. Local teen Emma Snow writes about various topics and events each month in the Grapevine. “A voice for the young people in our Community”. Do you need a social media detox? When I was in the transition period between finishing my A-Levels and starting University, I thought I was going to have lots of time to chill out a bit. How wrong was I! I was so busy, but having a week away with my family was just what I needed. On arriving in Norfolk for the week, I slowly began to remember that the phone signal is awful and that they are only just discovering Wi-Fi. So actually, I didn’t plan to have a social media detox, I was almost forced to take a break. I’m a self-confessed work-aholic; I love what I do and I use social media to share articles, email people I work with, or message them using Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. For me, social media is so useful, but because Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat are all accessible 24/7, it’s often very hard to just switch off. I didn’t realise how much of an impact doing a social media detox would have and I thought I would find it really hard, but I didn’t. Having a social media detox allowed me to actually enjoy my holiday and
52
not worry about what was happening at home; I could fully take in my surroundings and enjoy time with my family. So, this is something I would really recommend, because it may make you realise how much time you spend online. In fact, teenagers spend up to 9 hours per day looking at their favourite social media sites and apps. However, an increasing number of people do need to use social media for work, so doing a social media detox whilst being on holiday can be really beneficial. So, what are the benefits? 1. Breaking the social comparison cycle Do you find yourself constantly comparing yourself to other people? The most common issue surrounds body image, especially throughout the summer with many friends posting photos in their swimwear on Instagram. The problem is that this can have a serious impact on your self-esteem. Taking a break will prevent you from comparing yourself to others. 2. You’ll probably stop feeling so competitive You might be completely oblivious to this but according to research, social media brings out your competitive side. For example, on Facebook each reaction and comment is a measure of how popular a post is, probably making you compare your popularity to your other online friends.

3. Conquer your FOMO… When you first stop using social media, you may get withdrawal symptoms; it’s the ‘Fear Of Missing Out’. Not knowing what your friends are doing can cause anxiety, but after a while, you’ll soon start to realise it doesn’t really matter what everyone else is doing and begin to focus on yourself a little bit more. 4. Begin to live in the moment You might find that you post your every location on Snapchat, Instagram and check-in on Facebook. There have even been cases of people updating their Facebook and twitter accounts from the altar after getting married! If you’re living your life through a lens on social media, then your experiences are likely to be of a lower quality and become less memorable.

Health and Well Being Keep warm and well As the nights draw in and the mercury drops, it’s increasingly important to keep warm and check in regularly with elderly relatives and neighbours. Cold weather can have a serious impact on the health of certain vulnerable groups. Things to remember are: Heating your home to at least 18C is particularly important if you have reduced mobility, are 65 and over, or have a health condition, such as heart or lung disease. Having room temperatures slightly over 18C could be good for your health. If you are under 65, active and wearing appropriate clothing, you may feel comfortable at room temperatures slightly lower than 18C. Overnight, people who are 65 and over or who have pre-existing health conditions, may find bedroom temperatures of at least 18C are good for their health; this may be less important if you are a healthy adult under 65 and have appropriate clothing and bedding. If you can’t heat all the rooms you use, heat the living room during the day and your bedroom just before you go to sleep. Get your heating system and cooking appliances checked and keep your home well ventilated. If you have an electric blanket, use it as instructed and get it tested every three years. Never use a hot water bottle with an electric blanket.

Hand in your old and unused pills as part of antibiotic amnesty To mark World Antibiotic Awareness week (13 to 17 November), the public is being reminded about the over-use of antibiotics to help tackle the national & international antibiotic resistance crisis. The Nottinghamshire Whole Health Economy Infection Prevention and Control group is encouraging all residents to hand in their old and unused antibiotics as part of a county-wide antibiotic amnesty to help tackle antibiotic resistance and prevent the over-use of the drugs. It is estimated that at least 5,000 deaths are caused every year in England because antibiotics no longer work for some infections. This figure is set to rise with experts predicting that in just over 30 years, antibiotic resistance will kill more people than cancer and diabetes combined. The WHE IPC group is urging Nottinghamshire residents to trust their doctor, nurse or pharmacist’s advice as to when they need antibiotics and if they are prescribed, take antibiotics as directed and never save them for later use or share them with others. If you don’t have any old antibiotics to hand in you can still get involved in helping to tackle antibiotic resistance by pledging to become an antibiotic guardian http://antibioticguardian.com/ simply make a pledge on how you’ll use antibiotics better and help save these vital medicines.

While perusing the festive activities of the evening take advantage of all the other activity within the town. • The Season of Lights event will also take place at the Methodist Church on Chilwell Road from 2:30pm – 4:30pm. • Bartons have a FREE drop in exhibition on vehicle heritage from 4pm-6pm It’s also Small Business Saturday UK. This is a great opportunity to browse the fantastic independently owned shops in Beeston; many businesses will offer a one-off promotion as part of the celebrations. Parking in the Town Centre is limited so please use public transport where possible. The Beeston Tram and Bus Interchange will bring you right into the heart of Beeston and is just a short walk from Beeston Square. Foster Avenue will be closed from the junction of Styring Street to Commercial Avenue from 8.00am-7.30pm. We would like to give a massive thank you to NET (Nottingham Express Transit) for their support in this year’s Christmas lights Switch On Event.

Grown Ups Choice I thought for the festive season, I would offer a couple of feel good books. I can heartily recommend …
Christmas at the Little Knitting Box by Helen J Rolfe This is a wonderful romance set in New York (the first in a series), and if you like little shops full of character and whit you are going to enjoy being absorbed into this lyrical story. There is everything you need for a winter read—snow, misunderstanding, humour and happy endings. If you enjoy this you might also like Rolfe’s other work, I really took to the Magnolia Creek series.
Annie’s Christmas by the Sea by Liz Eeles Back on our own shores in Cornwall this funny family novel is a sure fire hit to read on a long winters night. I laughed out loud, which is a rare treat and could identify with a number of the situations. This the second in a series, and I had to go back and read the first installment Annie’s Holiday by the Sea as I wanted to know more about Annie and her life—I’m now waiting patiently to find out more in (hopefully) a third book.
Children’s Choice Maddie’s Magic Christmas by Sam Maxfield It’s quite easy to find picture books at this time of year for younger children, but I was totally delighted to ‘meet’ a children’s author on line—who lives in Wollaton! Her beautiful story was read alone by our seven year old, but we enjoyed it together with our less confident reader. The story has many elements, it’s a magical tale of friendship and affection, there is lot of baking, and a tearful reunion. You will need tissues. At this time of year there is a lot of sentimentality around, but this book manages to be both funny and moving all at once. It certainly sparked lots of great conversations and we have added it to our Advent Reading Box . www.mrsaverageevaluates.co.uk

Fake RSPCA websites advertising premium rate numbers The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) is warning the public about rogue websites advertising fake premium rate numbers for their cruelty line. The premium rate 0844 numbers advertised are designed to rack up a heavy bill for the caller and are give a false impression that they’re affiliated with the charity. The RSPCA said when a member of the public dials the fake number they’ll be charged a premium rate and are then diverted to their National Control Centre. This means the caller may not be immediately aware of the scam. Fake Google listings The correct number to report 24-hour cruelty to the RSPCA is 0300 1234 999. The call will cost the same as any call to a UK landline number. The charity conducted a search on Google and found 8 different scam sites with the incorrect 0844 premium rate numbers in the first 10 pages of Google. Dave Allen, our head of education and advice, said: “The amount of sites out there advertising incorrect contact numbers for our charity is very worrying. We’re urging people to watch out for websites with fake numbers and information that doesn’t sound quite right. Some of the sites can be quite convincing with unauthorised feeds from our official Twitter and Facebook page which makes them look all the more real”. “Unfortunately it can be difficult to get these sites shut down, but we’ve been trying to solve this issue by reporting the problem to Google so that the sites aren’t ranked highly in searches. We’ve also lodged a complaint to the UK’s communications regulator OFCOM and now we’re trying to raise awareness of this scam with the general public.” “Not only can these numbers leave people with a hefty phone bill, but it also means members of the public may be put off contacting us when an animal is in desperate need of care.” Fraudsters don’t care who they target, last year we warned the public about puppies and kittens being advertised for sale via popular online auction websites. Report fraud and cyber crime and receive a police crime reference number.

introduced in well-established and popular Foundation Stage. This new playground certainly has enhanced the outdoor environment; adding to our large Foundation stage area, sensory garden, tyre park, gardening plot, ‘forest schools’ area and playing field all of which are well-utilised throughout the school day.” Kevin Snow, outgoing Chair of Governors said, “The new equipment installed in the playground is the culmination of a raft of improvements at the school following the appointment of Sally Beardsley to the position of Head Teacher earlier this year. These include the building of an additional room adjacent to our Receptionclassroom, dedicated facility for special needs children, full-time provision for nursery children, new school logo and the soon to be launched improved school website”. Mike Marriott, the newly elected Chair of Governors added, “I would like to echo Kevin’s sentiments and thank him for all his hard work over the 9 years that he has been Chair, and also to thank the parents who worked so hard in raising funds to support this wonderful project. I am looking forward to working closely with Sally, her teaching staff, parents
and governors. The school’s quality was recognised when we retained our “Good” rating in our recent OFSTED assessment; this is a great foundation for our school family to build upon, as we strive to improve the school further, ensuring the children are both nurtured and given every
encouragement to develop to their full potential, in a school which remains at the heart of the local community.”

Wollaton Natural History Society For it’s first meeting of the New Year on Wednesday January 17th 2018, Wollaton Natural History Society will be offering a talk by Lindsey Shirley on The Work of the Canal and River Trust in the East Midlands. The Trust used to be British Waterways and took over the guardianship of all the rivers and canals in England and Wales in 2012. This talk covers their work in the East Midlands including a history of the Trust’s work focusing on the environmental aspect. We meet at St Leonard's Community Centre, Bramcote Lane, Wollaton (opposite the library) at 7.30pm. Annual subscription is £14.50 (about £1.30p per meeting) and now is a good time to join at the beginning of our year. Visitors are very welcome at £3.50 on the door. For more information on our new programme visit our website at: www.spanglefish.com/WollatonNaturalHistory
