Grapevine Tips

Tulips are wonderful in the Spring and especially in the home , but after placing in a vase ,they sometimes can be a disappointment, they either die quickly, petals fall off, or they tend to droop over looking sorry for themselves. Here are a few tips to help avoid such calamities.

1.Wrap the stalk ends of the tulips with

wet paper towels until you can get the flowers into a vase. This will give the tulips some moisture so they do not wilt and the ends will not soften. This helps them take up more water once they’re in the vase.

2.Cut 1/4 inch off the end of the tulip stem with small scissors when you are ready to put it into the vase. This will allow the stalk to take up more water. 3.Always choose a vase that is about 50 percent of the height of the tulips. This will help prop the tulips up in the vase.(In shorter vases, you can expect the tulips to eventually droop toward the sides).

4.Fill the vase with cold water. Warm or hot water will wilt tulips quickly. 10

5.Add a fresh cut flower preservative to the water. You can buy this at garden or florist shops. Follow the instructions on the package 6.Remove the wet paper towels and place the tulips into the vase,

7.Place the vase in a cool spot away from windows and direct sunlight. Cut tulips cannot handle much heat and will wilt more quickly if placed in direct sunlight. 8.Add water to the vase daily to

keep it almost filled with water, as tulips take up a lot of water.

Garden Jobs For March

1. Fertilize your beds.

Mow your lawn if it needs it, make sure blades are on higher setting.

Warm bags of compost by bringing them into the greenhouse before sewing seeds. Move trays of seedlings under cover of cold frame to harden off.

Grow hosta’s in pots to help protect from slugs or choose the blue-leaved forms that are less susceptible.

Cut back the remains of last year's perennials and tidy up all beds, weeding becomes easier whilst ground is wet. Mulch ground to keep weeds seedlings at bay.

Once your soil is workable, dig a 5cm (or more) layer of compost or well-rotted manure into your beds to prepare for the growing season ahead. You can also add in some generalpurpose fertilizer, such as pelleted chicken manure, or fish, blood and bone. 2. Put supports in. If any of your plants need supporting later in the year, put them in now, so plants can grow up through them. Adding supports afterwards is much harder. 3. Move deciduous trees or shrubs. Now is the time to do this task, provided the soil isn’t frozen or waterlogged. 4. Feed roses with special rose feed or balanced fertilizer as they come into growth. 5. Prune roses to encourage new growth.

Expansion of budgets for personalised health and care support announced. The government has announced plans to give personal health budgets to up to 200,000 people by 2024. Wheelchair users and people who access aftercare services under the Mental Health Act will soon have a right to a personal health budget, the government has announced.Personal health budgets allow people to choose their own health and care support, which could include: Specially adapted wheelchairs designed to maximise independence. A choice of personal assistants who can be specially trained to meet the individual’s needs. Technology, equipment or even an assistance dog to reduce the need for support from a carer.Over 40,000 people currently benefit from personal health budgets, and the government plans to increase this to up to 200,000 people by 2024.As well as extending the legal right to wheelchair users and people who access aftercare services under the Mental Health Act, the government will look to give personal health budgets to: People with ongoing mental health needs Veterans Autistic people People with learning disabilities People receiving adult social care support Personal health budgets are planned and agreed between individuals and clinicians, giving people greater choice, flexibility and control over their health and care support. They have also been shown to join up health and social care services in local areas and to help reduce pressure on emergency care. Last year the

22

Department of Health and Social Care and NHS England consulted on extending the right to a personal health budget. Nearly 9 out of 10 respondents supported the proposals. Increasing access to personal health budgets is part of the NHS Long Term Plan, which aims to extend personalised care to 2.5 million people by 2024. This will partly be achieved through personal health budgets and social prescribing, which is when people are referred by their GPs to local community or voluntary activities. Minister for Care Caroline Dinenage said: I’ve seen first-hand how personal health budgets can give people a new lease of life, granting them the ability to enjoy their lives to the full. These budgets help to join up health and social care services, improving people’s experiences and outcomes whilst ensuring value for money for taxpayers. We are therefore extending access so many more people can benefit, a key part of our NHS Long Term Plan which will see personalised care become the norm for millions more”. James Sanderson, NHS England Director of Personalised Care, said:The NHS Long Term Plan will see more than 2.5 million patients benefit from measures like personal health budgets and social prescribing, which mean people have more choice and control over their health, wellbeing and treatment”.Dealing with long-term health problems means moving away from a one-size-fits-all approach, and towards more tailored care, with 1,000 social prescribing workers in GP surgeries, closer working with voluntary groups and most importantly asking patients what support they need to live independently and well. by Department of Health & Social Care.

Wipe the surfaces again with a separate damp cloth, and dry with a towel. Warning: Steer clear of soap and detergents, which leave odours that food might absorb.

Leonardo da Vinci drawings exhibition in Derby From 1st February to Monday 6th May

The Royal Collection contains one of the world’s greatest collections of drawings by Leonardo da Vinci. This spring, a selection of these exquisite drawings will travel to Derby for a special exhibition marking the 500th anniversary of the Renaissance Master’s death. Never-before seen in the city, the works have been gathered together to reflect the full range of Leonardo’s interests, from painting, sculpture, architecture, and music, to anatomy, engineering, cartography, geology and botany. As so much of his life’s work was unrealised or destroyed, it is only in these drawings, and a handful of related manuscripts, that Leonardo’s greatest achievements survive. This exhibition is part of a nationwide event, with simultaneous shows of Leonardo’s drawings at Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Sheffield, Southampton and Sunderland, providing the widest-ever UK audience the opportunity to see the work of this extraordinary artist. Website to help kids to stay healthy. A new interactive health website aimed at 5 – 11 year olds will provide a one-stop shop for young people’s health needs and concerns. Health for Kids is a fun and exciting website to help primary school children think about how they can stay healthy and be more aware of issues including exercise, sun protection, healthy eating, puberty and sleep. The website has been created with the help of primary school children and focuses on the type of information, support and advice they would find most useful when thinking about illness and staying healthy. Illnesses and conditions that may affect this age range are also explained such as asthma, diabetes, allergies and head lice as well as emotional wellbeing linked to bullying and anxiety. Commissioned by Nottinghamshire County Council and developed and managed by Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust, the facility will provide general content and specific items localised to Nottinghamshire. The website states what children should do in an emergency, as well as what constitutes an emergency, and explains the role of a school nurse and a doctor.

Dr Kate Allen, Public Health Consultant at Nottinghamshire County Council, said that the Health for Kids brand was developed following the popularity of the successful and award-winning Health for Teens website. Dr Allen said: “Teaching children from an early age about healthy foods, what happens to their bodies as they grow, how to look after their teeth, the dangers of cigarettes and alcohol and the importance of getting enough sleep is an important aspect of education and Health for Kids is a good way to get messages to children. The interactive games, puzzles and quizzes are all designed to engage children in activities that are fun whilst giving them information that will help them make clever healthy choices as they get older.” The website will also have sections for parents/carers and teachers which will provide advice about how to get most benefit from the site. Dr Allen added: “Presenting key health topics through friendly characters like Factbot and Maggie the School Nurse and themed worlds like Jungle World and SciFi World is an exciting way to introduce children to the world of health.”You can find out more about what the website has to offer and activities local to Nottinghamshire at www.healthforkids.co.uk

Nottinghamshire County Council has launched a campaign to encourage more people to consider a career in adult social care. More and more people are now living longer with different health and mobility conditions which means that they require support from social care staff. This may be short term support to help people get back on their feet after an illness, support to help people live independently at home for as long as possible, as well as support in residential settings. As well as staff proving direct care and support to people aged between 18 to 100, there are a range of other opportunities that people can train for, including social workers and occupational therapists. Social care staff describe their work as unique, varied and rewarding. Training and on-going support is available and a career structure provides opportunities to grow, learn and develop. A career in social care with Nottinghamshire County Council also offers flexible working and regular support from senior managers. Megan Holding, social care assistant said: “I have been in my social care post for over a year now and before I came to the council I was a manager for a nursery and out of school club. “I thoroughly enjoy my role working with people to check that their care and support packages are still working well for them. The team I am in are hardworking and I find the team full of opportunities to further progress in

40

my career and current job role. I have a learning disability and have found no end of help and support from my team and the council. I have never felt so comfortable and confident in a job role before but I am given plenty of opportunities to learn and develop and no one holds me back because I have a learning disability. They always encourage and support me.” Christine Boyle, community care officer in the occupational health team said: “I was a customer service advisor with the council's Customer Service Centre for 10 years. I was the first point of contact for all adult social care enquiries and would do initial assessments over the telephone. The customer’s enquiry would often be dealt with by me providing advice and guidance or the case would be sent to the district team for an assessment either at clinic or in the home. This was for both care and equipment needs for older adults. le as community care officer with the occupational health team, I find that communication is key. As long as you can talk to people and have a genuine interest in what can help maintain or improve the quality of their life, then you pick the rest up as you go along. There isn’t always a right or wrong way and what is right for one person may not be what is right for another. I have to include the customer in all decisions and work with them to achieve a positive outcome.” Laura Mynett, social worker said: “I have been in my current role since September 2017. I worked in advertising and marketing for over 20 years, having left school at 16 to work for an advertising company, before doing my social work degree through the Open University. I hadn’t previously considered social work as it wasn’t a job I knew much about but I got

a role in an adoption agency promoting the charity and recruiting adopters and found out more about social work through this role. “I’m due to submit my ASYE (assessed and supported year in employment) portfolio shortly. The ASYE programme is well organised and offers lots of additional training and the opportunity to meet fellow colleagues who are new to social work which helps in feeling supported. I have also been fortunate to work in a great team with regular quality supervision and a manager who is knowledgeable, realistic and approachable.” Coun Stuart Wallace said: “Working in social care is an extremely rewarding career. It can be hard work, but to have the ability to make a lasting difference to people’s lives and independence is a privilege. “We would like to encourage anyone who has considered a career helping and providing support to others to get in touch with the county council to find out more. A career in adult social care will change the lives of the people you support and it will certainly change your life too.” For more information and to see the social care jobs available go to www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/adultsocialcarejobs

meetings over the summer, did not support the higher number. In October, Nottinghamshire County Council announced a change in policy towards its land holdings in Bramcote. It will now underwrite the cost of replacement school buildings, and raise funds by selling the Coventry Lane land itself. This reversed its decision of the previous year and should ensure the replacement school building remains in public ownership. December saw the examination of the Council’s local plan. Despite concerns that the council’s target of 6150 houses over the plan period is too high and may not be achieved, there was no evidence that the plan would change in any substantial way. Many of those taking part in the examination argued that setting aside 5% of plots for self-build was not appropriate on developments such as that proposed for the Bramcote green belt. We also argued that all, not just 10% as the council wanted, new homes on large developments in Bramcote should be adaptable and accessible. This would help residents downsize and stay in the community. Overall the voice of Bramcote residents has been heard and on occasion acted upon by the councils. Without the forum we would be facing a much poorer environment. 2019 promises to be a busy year. The planning inspector will report back on the Local Plan and our own neighbourhood plan will be submitted to the council. Local council elections

in May will stand between finalising the local plan and it being voted in. In September, the aligned core strategy review begins – and with it, a chance to revisit the validity of that 6150 target. Grown Ups Choice Florence and the Highwayman by Angela Rigley It’s always great to find a local author to support—and even better when the book

is great read as well This is a wonderfully fun and beautifully written period romance, but with a little more zing than Jane Austen. Florence is due to marry a great bore, but rather shockingly is kidnapped and has to fend off the attentions of a Highwayman… or is he? The characters are well developed and the story trots along at a good pace with humour and charm. Rigley is based in Derbyshire and a love for nature and our great countryside is also encapsulated in the book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, and have since started Nancie—which feels a little darker so far... I

Children’s Choice Letter to Pluto by Lou Treleaven

One for the older children this time, perhaps KS 1-2, this book is a series of letters from the lovely Jon here on Earth, to his intergalactic penpal Straxi— who is a GIRL… Jon isn’t really very keen on writing at all and certainly not to a strange alien, however his teacher Mrs Hall is quite definite. This is such a fun idea, and the letters are packed with pictures and extra information so it really doesn’t feel like you’re reading a whole big book. The creativity is really impressive and the story is very funny. Some of the language is quite complex, and we did read it together first so check some of the more unusual words and understanding. There are a number of alien words as well, which are great fun to play around with. w ww . mrsaverag eeval u ates. co .u k

Care and Support at Home – What is Dementia? – Causes and Diagnosis In my previous article I referred to the fact that dementia covers a wide range of conditions rather than just one specific disease and described the most common types of Dementia but, what causes Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias? Dementia is caused by gradual changes and damage in the brain. The most common causes of dementia include diseases in which the brain cells degenerate and die more quickly than they would as part of the normal ageing process. The changes usually happen because of a build-up of abnormal proteins in the brain. The precise cause or causes of Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias is not known; however, most experts agree that Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias, like other chronic diseases, probably develop as a result of multiple factors rather than from a single cause. The greatest risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias is advancing age but it is not a normal part of ageing. Other prominent risk factors include family history, cardiovascular disease and strokes as well as head or brain trauma. Some researchers think that lifestyle may matter as much as family history. Individuals may be able to lower the odds of developing dementia or delaying its onset by exercising, eating well, staying socially active and using the brain regularly.Until a few years ago the diagnosis of dementia was very much a hit and miss affair and the processes used were not reliable. This has substantially changed over the past 10 years and, although there are still problems, the pathway for diagnosis

54

is reasonably clear. The first step is to approach a relevant doctor or GP who should discuss your concerns and symptoms. The doctor will ask questions to test your memory and thinking and carry out a full health check to rule out other conditions such as depression, drug interaction, thyroid problems, etc. If necessary, the doctor will refer you to a specialist or a memory clinic for a more detailed assessment.A brain scan is sometimes carried out to look for signs of a stroke, tumour or other conditions. A medical history is taken to establish what other cognitive deficits are present by determining if deficits in functional activities of daily living are present. The medical history also determines the approximate time of onset, progression and potential contributing factors, such as family history, history of substance abuse, head injury, stroke and seizure or medication issues. The history is probably the single most important part of the evaluation. There are a variety of evaluations used to test memory and mental status in a person with symptoms of Alzheimer’s. These evaluations test various functions including orientation; short term memory; and ability to follow instructions and recognise objects. This type of testing cannot be used as the sole indicator because results can be influenced by cultural and socioeconomic factors.Getting a diagnosis of early stage dementia will not make things worse and it can help make decisions regarding changes to lifestyle in order to live as well as possible. Council Fleet Encourages Residents To Be Clean And Green. Broxtowe Borough Council’s Refuse fleet has had a refresh, aimed at encouraging residents to keep the Borough clean and green. The newly decorated bin lorries are just one of the ways the Council is making the Broxtowe Borough cleaner and tidier as part of its Clean and Green campaign. The new signage, on 16 of the Council’s bin lorries, along with street cleansing and grounds maintenance vehicles includes promotional messages aimed at preventing fly tipping, encouraging residents to join Community Clean Teams and information about what can and can’t be put in the recycling bin.

Councillor Shane Easom, Chair of the Leisure and Environment Committee said:“We’re introducing this new signage to help to make our residents aware of the different ways in which we can all help to make the Borough cleaner. “These new banners are just a small part of our Clean and Green campaign about the keeping the Borough clean and tidy, protecting the environment in the future and why we must all do more as a community. The signs are a great way for people to see these positive messages as they go about their day.

60

The campaign has also seen: 1. 63 litter bins have been refreshed. 2. 12 Community Clean up events take place across the Borough with 170 local residents joining Community Clean Teams to take part in the events. 3.Five individuals/groups who the Council wasn’t previously working with have been in touch about getting involved with the Clean and Green campaign. 4.Five waste days taking place in March to enable resident to dispose of their bulky waste. 5.A further three waste days planned at the Council’s Housing schemes over Easter. 6.Initiatives to reduce fly tipping at New Road and Narrow Road, Watnall have been successful, including new signage. There were 27 fly tipping incidents between April and August 2018 and this has since reduced to just two. 7.Further work will now taking place at other hot spot sites, including the entrance to the sewage works on the A610. Find out more about Clean and Green and where you can download a Resource Pack to help you organise your own Community Clean Up events. https://www.broxtowe.gov.uk/for-you/ litter-and-street-cleansing/clean-andgreen/

GRAPEVINE COMPETITION WIN 2 TICKETS TO SEE THE UNDERTONES with special guest THE NEVILLE STAPLE BAND !

Celebrating the 40th anniversary of The Undertones debut album & 40 years of ‘Two Tone’ announce Spring 2019 – UK Tour playing COVENTRY – Empire on Friday 3rd May! Formed in Derry, Northern Ireland in 1975, The Undertones became renowned for combining lyrical invention and musical flair with intelligent simplicity. Their anthemic Teenage Kicks, much loved by John Peel, is one of the most influential songs of the post-punk era. On May 13, 1979 Seymour Stein’s Sire records released the band’s self titled debut album ‘The Undertones’. To mark the 40th anniversary of its release, The Undertones now present a glorious set of classic tracks taken from what is considered by many to be one of the best punk albums of all time (Family Entertainment, Male Model, Jump Boys, Here Comes The Summer, Jimmy Jimmy), adding to them a whole bucketful of their iconic guitar pop hits & anthems, Get Over You, My Perfect Cousin, You’ve Got My Number, Julie Ocean, Wednesday Week, and, of course, Teenage Kicks. Special guest Neville Staple, also known as The Original Rudeboy, is credited with changing the face of pop music not only once but twice. Neville Staple’s 40 year career in the music business is well documented, from the early days with The Coventry Automatics, The Specials & FunBoy3 in the late ‘70s and ‘80s, to The Special Beat and various other collaborations during his solo career from the ‘90s up to the present day. Support for young people If you’re worried about your boyfriend or partner’s behaviour, learning more about the warning signs of domestic violence could help you – or someone close to you – stay safe. You don’t have to deal with this on your own. Try and talk to someone you trust – perhaps a friend, teacher or parent. Or call the Freephone 24 Hour National Domestic Violence Helpline, run in partnership between Refuge and Women’s Aid. Helpline workers are here for you 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Freephone 24-Hour National Domestic Violence Helpline: 0808 2000 247 Run in partnership between Women’s Aid and Refuge All calls are confidential. If you’ve been physically hurt, or feel like you are in immediate danger, call 999. The police have a duty to investigate and keep you safe. What about pets? -Many women and children are forced to stay with violent partners because they feel they can’t leave their pets behind. Research shows that there is a link between animal abuse and domestic violence: men who are violent to women may threaten to harm or kill a beloved pet in order to intimidate their partner. The Links Group is a multi-agency group that promotes the welfare and safety of vulnerable children, animals and adults. Members include leading associations and charitable organisations. As part of The Links Group, some charities offer pet fostering services specifically for pets belonging to women fleeing from domestic violence. For many women and children who leave violent relationships, the options open to them regarding their pets are very limited. The services listed below ensure that pets are cared for in a volunteer foster carer’s home until their owner is able to be reunited with them. All placements are strictly confidential.
