Welcome to our new gardening feature! Hello Gardeners… It‛s Gardener Steve here! and I‛m bringing you gardening tips, news and events.

It’s great to be back here with you and most important hope you are all keeping well, safe and that your garden has been your lifeline through these challenging time’s and it was definitely a chance for me to get out in my garden which I have only had for 18 months so there was plenty to get on with. I can’t believe its now June and its summer! It really is a wonderful time in the garden as flowers are starting to appear in abundance and in the vegetable garden some things are starting to be harvested such as early new potatoes, oh I do love this time of year and with the longest day this month we get to make the most of the extra light and warmth. It’s pretty safe to assume that the frosts are behind us now (although nothing is guaranteed), so now is the time to plant out those plants that have been grown on in the greenhouse but still be cautious of rushing this, making sure your plants are a acclimatised to the outdoors by hardening them off but always have some fleece or newspaper just in case should a night frost be forecast. Here are some jobs to keep you busy in your garden throughout June. Happy Gardening Everybody! • • • • • • •

10

There is still time to plant runner beans - sow them directly in the ground now Although fruit trees will naturally shed some fruit (called the 'June drop'), aim to thin out congested branches further for bigger and better fruits In the greenhouse, open vents and doors on warm days and dampen down on hot days to increase humidity If the weather turns very dry, set your mower blades higher to reduce stress on your lawn. Plant out annual summer bedding plants now the risk of frost has passed Turn the compost in your bins every month to keep it well aerated, give it a little water if dry Prune flowering shrubs such as Deutzia, Kolkwitzia, Weigela and Philadelphus after they have finished flowering Please mention Grapevine when responding to advertisements.

• • •

Keep newly planted trees and shrubs well watered whilst they establish a strong root system Continue to earth up potatoes as they grow. If you're growing potatoes in tubs just add more compost to half way up the plant stem Clip the new growth of evergreen hedges such as Privet, Box and Yew to keep them in shape

Message from Blue Skies The Limit Events and Adventure… Here at Blue Skies The Limit our job is to get our very own Gardener Steve out on the road with our monthly garden day trips, but presently they are on hold due to Covid-19. We have been organising and running the day trips since 2017 and over the last 3 years we have travelled miles from Surrey to North Yorkshire and visited gardens of all shapes and sizes and such variety like Westonbirt Arboretum, RHS Harlow Carr & Wisley, Ness & Cambridge Botanic Gardens and Biddulph Grange just to name a few and we depart from a pick up point in Breaston and Sandiacre. When things hopefully get back to normal we will be very much looking forward to getting back out there and visiting gardens, flower shows, botanical gardens, stately homes and garden centres. If you would like to join us in the future on our garden adventures, if you enjoy meeting new friends and wanting a great day out why not subscribe to our mailing list and we will keep you posted of all our future events and receive our gardening newsletter until we can get back out on the road. Please email us at infoblueskiesthelimit@gmail.com Gardener Steve’s Plant of the Month ROSA ‘DEEP SECRET’ (rose 'Deep Secret') Rosa can be deciduous or semi-evergreen shrubs or scrambling climbers, with usually thorny stems bearing pinnate leaves and solitary or clustered, 5-petalled flowers followed by showy red fruits (hips) Deep Secret is a stunning rose and probably one of the darkest of the Hybrid Tea, or large-flowered bush roses which are upright, thorny shrubs with large, usually glossy leaves and large, double often fragrant and rounded double deep crimson flowers are 10cm across, in summer and autumn as with a number of the To advertise call 07854990608 or visit our website www.beechpublications.co.uk

Nottinghamshire County Council have safely reopened six of its 12 Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs). Beeston’s HWRC is open from 10-6pm daily. You are advised to only make the journey if you cannot store your waste safely at home. Broxtowe have two recycling centres which are operated by Nottinghamshire County Council. These are based in Giltbrook and Beeston. The Beeston centre is open from 10am to 6pm 7 days a week. Beeston Recycling Centre, Lilac Grove, Beeston.NG9 1PF To ensure the safety of workers and residents, strict social distancing will be enforced and a one car in, one car out policy will be in place at all sites - no trailers, vans or pick-ups will be permitted. Recycling centres are only open for waste that you can’t store safely at home without causing a risk of injury, health or harm. No other reason for the journey would be considered a legitimate purpose. Please continue to use kerbside waste and recycling services and hang on to any items you would normally take to recycling centres for a few more weeks. Or if there’s still some life left in them, why not try selling online or compost garden waste at home. Avoid bringing excessive amounts of waste so people can get in and out as quickly as possible to help reduce queue times. Be prepared to queue – fewer vehicles than usual will be allowed on-site at any

26

one time to allow for social distancing. Stay in your vehicle while queuing to aid with social distancing. Please do not leave your vehicle until it is necessary to get out. Stay safe – wear protective gloves, appropriate footwear and clothing and only bring what you can safely handle as staff will not be able to help you carry your waste as they normally would. Keep your distance – please stay at least two metres away from staff and other users. Please do not visit if you have coronavirus symptoms in the last 14 days, are self-isolating or at high risk of contracting the virus. Remember to wash your hands when you get home. Reduced Service The sites will also be running a reduced service and only the following waste can be taken: garden waste wood cardboard metals waste electrical and electronic equipment general waste You are advised to only make the journey if you cannot store your waste safely at home. For more information about the reopening of recycling centres take a look at the frequently asked questions https://www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/ waste-and-recycling/recycling-centres/ reopening-faqs?

Please mention Grapevine when responding to advertisements.

To make sure only those allowed to use our recycling centres do so you must register your vehicle(s) with us first. If the registration number of the vehicle you use when visiting a recycling centre has not been registered with us first you may not be allowed to use the recycling centre. https://forms.nottinghamshire.gov.uk Moving house or changing your vehicle If you change your vehicle, or have registered one vehicle and wish to add another (you can register up to two), you will need to complete this registration form again to update your vehicle details. If you change your address, you will need to update your details in your on line account first, then complete the registration form again to update your details. What can be recycled? A range of items can be recycled or disposed of at our recycling centres including glass, paper and cardboard, plastic bottles, textiles, metals, electricals, engine oil, car batteries, cooking oil and green waste. In many cases small amounts can be recycled by the bin collections from your home or at local recycling banks. There are some items that cannot be taken to our recycling centres and need specialist disposal such as asbestos, car tyres, trade, commercial or industrial waste.

You will not be allowed to use a work vehicle to dispose of waste at one of our recycling centres if it has a connection to your trade, even if it is your own household waste. ‘Man with a van’ services cannot be used for disposing of waste at our recycling centres under any circumstances. Such services are classed as trade waste and require a waste carrier’s licence and waste transfer notes. They therefore need to dispose of the waste at permitted legal waste facilities, not at household waste recycling centres. If such services cannot produce a waste carrier’s licence and waste transfer notes they are operating illegally. If you employ someone to remove your waste you are also legally responsible for ensuring its safe and legal disposal As a general guide a ‘man with a van’ service would typically charge more than your local district or borough council bulky collection service for taking away waste. For further information please go to www.nottingham.gov.uk.tradewaste For more information about the reopening of recycling centres take a look at the frequently asked questions https://www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/ waste-and-recycling/recycling-centres/ reopening-faqs? Don’t forget to register your details for using the recycle centres in Broxtowe. You can do this by visiting Nottinghamshire County Councils.

FRESH START FOR HENS (Please read). Part 1 So, what is all the talk about ‘saving hens’ about then? Well believe me these girls deserve saving. All commercial farmers, battery, barn or free range, will get rid of their flock at just 72 weeks. Giving the hens a life expectancy of only 18 months. Yet the girls will happily go on laying for 4-5 years. Commercial pressure on the farmer means the hen is not viable after 72 weeks. The absolute certainty of an egg a day becomes less guaranteed so they are sold on - for cheap meat pies and dog/cat food This is where FRESH START FOR HENS steps in. We pay the farmer the same as the slaughter house. Arriving at crack of dawn every single girl is crated up (and that is usually 2.5003000 hens) and hired vans with volunteers drive all over the country taking these smashing pets to their new loving homes. Have you ever thought of having a hen as a pet? Believe me they are easier than most domestic animals and will reward you with the best eggs you have EVER tasted. These friendly little critters have huge personalities, adore their humans ( they love being held and cuddled and quickly fall asleep in your arms), eat all the veggie waste from your kitchen and cost zero as you never buy an egg again!, Your local collection point is Ilkeston. Do go to our website Freshstartforhens.co.uk, visit Ilkeston Fresh Start for Hens on FB or ring Dee 07946 65317

Sherwood Forest on target to become the world’s first 5G ‘Connected Forest’

Nottinghamshire County Council leads a major consortium which includes testing a new virtual reality experience at the home of Robin Hood Visitors to the Sherwood Forest Country Park will be able to get a 3D experience of the forest like never before following the go-ahead for a £10m project to test the latest 5G technology at the worldrenowned tourist destination. Government funding worth £5 million, which will be matched by a consortium led by Nottinghamshire County Council, has been announced as part of series of government-funded trials to seize the potential of modern technology by the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. The £10m funding will launch the 25-month test bed and trial programme to create the world’s first 5G Connected Forest at the Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre and surrounding area, including Rufford Abbey Country Park, which are managed by the RSPB and Parkwood Outdoors on behalf of the County Council.

38

5G is the next generation of connective technology that can power machines, objects, and devices including driving vehicles remotely and creating faultless mobile phone connections in places where this was previously not possible. Focusing on how 5G technology can benefit tourism and environment sectors, the pilot, which starts next month, will test new approaches to using virtual and augmented reality experiences for visitors as well as at ways to improve visitor accommodation and transport. Visitors will be able to experience the new technology first hand as early as March 2021, during the first year of the programme. The project will also look at ways that 5G can be used to improve the management of the forest and monitor its health. A 5G Innovation Hub will also be developed to provide facilities for research and for businesses to explore new applications for this cutting-edge technology as well as an opportunity for local people to upgrade skills. Highlights of the 5G Connected Forest project will include: Bringing the Robin Hood legend to life at the Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre via an incredible 3D/4D virtual reality experience. Testing of semi-autonomous vehicles to transport visitors, particularly those with mobility issues, with plans for on-board narration to describe the history and background of the site. Technology to teach children about the natural habitat of the forest to inspire the next generation of conservationists.

Testing the state-of-the-art digital technologies such as drones and robots to help survey and monitor the health of the forest while minimising the impact on the environment.

“With £5 million of government funding matched by industry, I’m very excited to see what lessons can be learned about the innovative ways 5G can boost Britain’s brilliant tourism experiences.”

Trialling more energy-efficient visitor accommodation using smart devices to reduce the environmental impact of a visitor’s stay as well as other improvements to encourage longer stays in the county.

Welcoming the Government funding, Nottinghamshire County Council leader, Councillor Kay Cutts MBE said:

A 5G Innovation Hub to host new research and to provide businesses with access to facilities to trial new ideas and innovations. An education and skills programme for local people and businesses. The consortium is led by Nottinghamshire County Council and includes Nottingham Trent University, Birmingham City University, Netmore IOT Solutions, Gooii, ISPB, Harworth Group, Centre Parcs UK, Stagecoach East Midlands and Parkwood Outdoors. Connected Forest is one of eight national 5G programmes announced and is one of only two projects to be led by a local authority. Oliver Dowden, Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport said: “Connecting the ancient Sherwood Forest with next-generation 5G technology will help bring its story and legendary characters to life through virtual reality, with huge knock-on benefits for Nottinghamshire’s visit economy.

“Nottinghamshire is once again at the forefront of latest technology, bringing together some of the best academic minds, 3D creators and experts in 5G. “This will be the world’s first testing, of 5G, in a forest. It will bring the stories associated with Robin Hood and our ancient woodland to life in a new way. “Together with our partners, we will create a virtual reality experience for visitors to Sherwood Forest to attract even more families and visitors to Nottinghamshire from across the UK and overseas, bringing benefits to local businesses and our economy.” by Nottinghamshire County Council Photo: Robin Hood with Council Leader, Cllr Kay Cutts with young visitors from Derbyshire, George, 11 and Huey, 7 trying out a trial version of the VR headsets. It is hoped that VR experience at Sherwood will be available from next March 2021.

The Studio at Padge Road Living well with dementia and related disorders A unique new concept in dementia care has come to Beeston. The Studio, at Padge Road, is an arts centre designed so that people with dementia can try out new skills or practise familiar leisure activities with support. With provision for music making, singing, exercise, theatre, crafts and visual arts, The Studio is a place for people to ‘connect and create’, supported by professional ArtsCare Assistants. Meanwhile family carers can have a well- earned break. The Studio’s team of ArtsCare Assistants is led by professional artists Emma Wass and Sarah Griffiths-Wright, who devise and lead a varied programme of individual and group-based creative pursuits tailored to participants’ abilities and interests. Everyone is fully assessed at the outset in a free, introductory session. No previous artistic experience is required; the principle is that human beings are all creative. For example, Emma is trained in the Timeslips technique, a storytelling approach that uses the inspiration of all present to weave a narrative. This shows powerfully that people with memory problems can still use their imaginations. The purpose of The Studio is to inspire a person’s natural creativity and we will tailor a programme to individual interests and capabilities. The activities will have seasonal themes and include: painting, sculpture, sketching, woodwork, collage, singing, making music, film screenings, seated exercise, shared reading, puppetry, poetry, art appreciation and gallery ‘visits’ enabled by new technology – plus lots more. Home Instead are proud to finance and support The Studio. We know that many of the people we support can greatly benefit from creative activities and having a local facility of this type will make a lot of difference to them and their carers. Our aim is to become a centre of excellence in dementia care, based on evidence and experience of how arts-led interventions can promote health and wellbeing. A non-profit organisation, Imagine Artsdem Broxtowe CIC, has been formed to run the centre. If you, a relative, a friend or somebody you support has been diagnosed with dementia we will invite you for an assessment. We will provide more information and recommend a good trial day for a free tester session. Broxtowe Community Appeal Update. We are delighted that the Broxtowe Community Appeal has now exceeded its target of ÂŁ10,000 (this amount was with two days left until it closed). The crowd funding appeal was asking for donations which the Council would allocate to voluntary and community groups who are helping vulnerable people get by during the pandemic. This includes getting food, hot meals, medicines and essential supplies, as well as providing befriending and mental health support. The funds raised was added to the ÂŁ58,000 that the Council has already given to these groups to help them continue the valuable support they are providing. Thank you to everyone who has donated so far, including the Rotary Club of Beeston, Bulletin PR, Whitegates Estate Agents, Bowmer + Kirland, Flowbird Smart City UK Ltd and Councillor John McGrath and helpers in Stapleford and local resident Kerstine Herbert who have done their own fundraising activities to raise funds for the appeal. Pledges closed on 24th May. For further information and to see the final total please visit: www.spacehive.com/broxtowe-community-appeal Article by Broxtowe Borough Council.

Nottingham is the place where the English Civil War began and ended, and where the Mayflower Pilgrims started their journey to Provincetown in the USA in 1620.The pilgrims had taken the difficult two-month journey across the Atlantic seeking religious freedom. Before they went ashore, men on the ship signed the Mayflower Compact, a governing document that would later serve as a model for the Founding Fathers. Today Nottingham is a UNESCO City of Literature, recognising not only the astonishing impact these writers have made to the literary world, but also celebrating its appeal to visitors from across the globe. Lord Byron and D.H. Lawrence were probably the most rebellious creative writers of their time, (pushing boundaries and smashing taboos with literary works). Another famous Nottingham author Alan Stillitoe who wrote many novels, but Birthday (2001) is a sequel to his famous Saturday Night and Sunday Morning and A Man of His Time (2004) is the story of a womanising Nottinghamshire blacksmith! Alan died in April 2010.

Coronavirus (COVID-19). Free parking permits for key workers and volunteers Nottinghamshire County Council and all Nottinghamshire district and borough councils have launched a free parking permit for NHS and social care workers. Apply for a permit The permits allow eligible people to park for an unlimited time on single yellow lines, in residents parking areas, limited waiting bays, or council-owned car parks. Who is eligible? The new permit scheme recognises that NHS and social care staff are doing vitally important work to support the most vulnerable in our society during this unprecedented emergency. Many are relying on cars to get them to and from work, to minimise the spread of infection, and are working long hours. As well as NHS staff and social care workers, the new council permit scheme is being extended to anyone providing direct support helping unwell and vulnerable people in their communities, including emergency service workers, community volunteers, frontline transport workers, and local authority staff. How does it work? The new permits are ‘virtual’, which means there is no need to display anything in vehicles. Instead, vehicle registrations will be logged using a secure digital system, marking them as exempt. For further information on permits, please go to www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk.

COVID-19 and scams Scams hope to take advantage of the most vulnerable in our communities, and our Trading Standards team is aware scam activity relating to COVID-19 in Nottinghamshire. Here are just some of the scams we are aware of which are targeting Nottinghamshire communities: • •

• • • • • • •

Unwanted callers asking for donations to help those in need during this time Individuals making contact out of the blue claiming to be from official organisations and asking for payment for the latest COVID-19 information and treatments which do not exist. Calls and emails offering miracle cures. Door-to-door visitors claiming to be from the British Red Cross offering testing. Individuals offering to do shopping and not returning with the bank card and the groceries Emails posing as the Centre for Disease Control (CDC) and World Health Organisation (WHO) Emails claiming to be from HMRC offering a tax rebate due to the coronavirus Text messages claiming to be from GOV.UK requesting money for breaching stay at home regulations Fraudulent messages to parents entitled to free school meals requesting bank details.

While scams aren’t always easy to spot, we’ve put together some top tips on protecting yourself and your loved ones from scams. •

• •

Always ask for identification from those who turn up out of the blue at your property, and if in doubt call the organisation directly to verify. Be suspicious of requests for money up front and never feel pressured into handing any over. Check with family and friends before accepting offers of help and support. Those who are genuine will be happy to wait for your response. Legitimate organisations will not contact you out of the blue to ask for payment. Make sure to remember this if you are contacted. If an email does not look right, never click on links or attachments. If you are unsure about whether an email is genuine, ask family and friends to make sure. Protect your financial information, especially from those you don’t know. Never give your bank card or pin number to a stranger. If in doubt, don’t be afraid to hang up, bin it, delete it or shut the door.

• • • •

becoming unwilling to go out (just in case they miss the next phone call telling them what they have won) no money to buy food / pay bills lots of mail unwilling to throw any old post away.

45% Reduction in Carbon Emissions Kick Starts Broxtowe’s Green Futures Programme Broxtowe Borough Council has kick started it’s Green Futures programme with news that it has reduced its own carbon emissions by 45% since 2009. The Green Futures programme is part of the authority’s plans to reduce carbon emissions to net zero by 2027 at both the Council and the Borough as a whole. It follows a Council motion in July 2019 to declare a Climate Change Emergency. The Council’s reduction, which takes it from 4242 to 2328 tonnes, has been achieved as part of a Carbon Management Plan which saw over 60 projects undertaken including: • • Introduction of solar panels on Council buildings • LED lighting • More accurate metering • Reduction in printing devices and encouraging online channels • Improvements to our fleet including electric vehicles and finding ways to extend the life of vehicles • Redesign of refuse rounds to reduce fuel usage • Rationalisation of buildings • Installation of combined heat and power units Chair of the Environment and Climate Change Committee, Councillor Helen Skinner said: “Climate change is one of the biggest issues we face as a Council, as a Borough and across the world, so I’m very pleased that the Council has achieved this reduction in emissions so far. As a Council, we’ll be continuing to work hard to reduce our carbon emissions even further. I know that the environment is a very important issue for many of our residents and I hope that they will engage with us on tackling climate change and help us reach our target of net zero.” The Council will now be working on a new Carbon Reduction Strategy for the authority, including assessing the footprint of its supply chain. Work to help reduce the overall carbon emissions of the Borough will also take place over the coming months including: • Working with community groups and schools • Raising awareness of how residents can reduce their carbon footprint • Working with businesses to become more sustainable You can find out more at www.broxtowe.gov.uk/greenfutures To advertise call 07854990608 or visit our website www.beechpublications.co.uk

NATIONAL TRUST NOTTINGHAM CENTRE 2020 - 2021 Winter Meetings September seems a long way off as we come to terms with social distancing and restrictions on our daily lives. Something to look forward to when we can meet again is our Winter Programme of talks. The programme runs twice a month from September to April. Each talk lasts for an hour with a variety of subjects and speakers. The year starts with "British Garden Birds"; later in the year, "Gardens Great and Small" and "Japan's Wildlife". History buffs may enjoy "Cuba and Panama"; Independence, Revolution and Pirates", or "Inn Signs and Local History". Our Christmas will be "Scottish Dancing and Ceilidh", and, of course, two National Trust property talks will be included, "The Museum of Childhood, Sudbury" and "Power, Positions and Gardens; Stowe, Biddulph and Nymans". If restrictions are relaxed, we hope to run some minibus walks for small groups from August onwards. Provisional dates are as follows: Wednesday 5 August: Harringworth to Fineshade (Rockingham Forest) Thursday 20 August: Brassington to Tissington (Peak District) Thursday 17 September: Deep Hayes to Froghall (Churnet Valley) Thursday 1 October: Belton-in-Rutland to Egleton (Rutland) Wednesday, 14 October: Wetton Mill to Ilam Park (Peak District) On a wider scale, although National Trust properties and gardens remain closed, with the exception of Coast and Countryside car parks, where the advice is to book, there are lots of very interesting articles on their website, one in particular "The Art of Illusion" which covers many of the illusions within stately homes. You will need to be a member of the National Trust to join the Nottingham Centre and you will need to be a member of both to attend our other activities. Our programmes and newsletters keep you informed of what is happening. It costs £6 per person per annum to join and £10 for 2 people living at the same address. The talks cost £3 per person and £4 for guests. Our Web site is: www.ntnottingham.uk Our Membership Secretary is Barbara McDonald
