Do we really need HS2 or is it a very expensive project we could do without? Read on to discover the real facts behind the headlines by John Slater. Most people have heard about HS2, some may even know quite a lot of the detail. However, how many fully understand the full implications this will bring in reality. The impact on our community, and the effect it will have on all of us would be long lasting. Even those who do not live near the proposed HS2 route will be affected one way or another. The effects in our local areas In Trowell and Long Eaton, action groups have been set up to protest against HS2, with the objective of stopping it altogether. The reason we feel so strongly about this is not just because of the adverse effects on our local towns and villages, but is more about the huge amount of money that will be required to build it. The Department for Transport has approved this plan with no real justification for it in the first place, as I will explain shortly. So how much will HS2 cost? The budget for HS2 has risen from £32 billion in 2010, to £56 billion in 2015, and this year the National Audit Office has put the figure at £63 billion. To many people those figures don’t mean a lot, because they are difficult to imagine in a practical way. Let’s just say that if you spent a million pounds every day, £63 billion would last for 175 years!! It is a HUGE amount of money. What if the HS2 doesn’t come near my area? If you think you won’t be affected by HS2 just think on a few probable situations: 1.The construction phase will take several years, whilst bridges, viaducts, cuttings and tunnels arte built. The works will cross several main roads. That will create traffic disruption and congestion on a scale we’ve not seen in the past. Your journey by car will be seriously lengthened, for a number of years. 2. If you travel by train on the existing rail services, these are likely to be affected if HS2 goes ahead. The loss of revenue to those existing rail networks will force their prices up whilst cutting some of their services. A double whammy. 3. The funding for this is being met by the taxpayer, and with amount of capital required that tax will have to come from somewhere, so other services are sure to be affected. The NHS, the emergency services, new housing, and social services, all need extra funding. The priority though seems to be building a railway that we don’t really need. The wider picture The Government’s justification for needing HS2 has changed numerous times over the last few years, showing that it was ill conceived and not considered properly from the start. It would appear that the decision to go ahead was made before any justification was considered at all.The case for HS2 has been made using a series of myths and fanciful statistics.

GRAPEVINE-WOLLATON Jan 2017.indd 18
08/01/2017 20:16
1.The first myth was that other countries had implemented high speed rail networks and we were falling behind. The fact is, in Europe every country that has invested in high speed rail, is losing money on it and failing to achieve the promised economic benefits. Our existing network is capable of being upgraded without any need for the totally separate HS2 lines. 2. Next was the notion that HS2 would provide an alternative to air travel, thereby making a case that the extra runway at Heathrow would not be needed. We now know that this runway has been approved, yet the case for HS2 remains unchanged. 3. Perhaps the weirdest case for HS2 was that it would save travelling time. Maybe so for a privileged few travelling from London, but here in the East Midlands, no stations at Derby, Nottingham or Leicester, this means it’s more likely journey times will be slower if anything. 4. Next, the government claim that HS2 is essential to increase capacity and reduce overcrowding. This again shows the lack of any study of the facts. Most overcrowding is on local and regional services. Because HS2 is a national link to major cities, the extra capacity would be put where it is least needed. 5. Finally, we have the old chestnut of the promise of more jobs and economic regeneration. What does that really mean. I remember hearing the 74000 jobs be bandied about. The way jobs are calculated is in terms of job years. So for example if 500 construction workers are needed for 10 years, that’s 5000 job years right? Of course 5000 jobs sounds a lot better though doesn’t it? Conclusion As I said at the start, our main objection to this project is the huge amount of money required for something we don’t really need. Money that would serve far more deserving cases much better. The government have commissioned studies to assess the effects of HS2. The studies have warned against several pitfalls, but the government has chosen to carry on regardless. I hope to submit another article in the near future, to explain how we are progressing with the action groups and report any new developments. If you would like to comment on any of the issues you can do so at the links below, it would be great to hear your thoughts. We are also building a website, which should be ready very soon. Based on “Little Orphan Annie” ® By Permission of The Tribune Media Services,
Long Eaton Operatic Society Youth Group Following on from their highly successful production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor® Dreamcoat Jr, LEOS Youth Group are proud to present Annie Jr from 16th/18th February 2017 at the Duchess Theatre, Long Eaton. Annie Jr is a Broadway musical based upon the popular comic strip ‘Little Orphan Annie’. It tells of a young girl who rises from rags to riches simply by charming everyone's hearts, despite a next-to-nothing start in 1930s New York City. Annie is determined to find the parents who abandoned her years ago on the doorstep of an orphanage run by the cruel Miss Hannigan. The songs "Tomorrow" and "It's a Hard Knock Life" are among its most popular musical numbers in the show. With plenty of parts and rousing choruses there are lots of opportunities for all the youngsters to showcase their talents. So, if you have an opportunity to come and see Annie Jr, everyone would be delighted to see you there. Tickets are on sale now priced £8 & £7 (concessions Saturday Matinee only) and are available from: • • •

Local teen Emma Snow writes about various topics and events each month in the Grapevine. “A voice for the young people in our Community”.
Hello 2017! Many of us are glad we have ended 2016. What a year! Is that an understatement? Maybe. It’s almost as if the world had been put under a huge social experiment. Donald Trump became the United States of America’s President Elect, we voted to leave the European Union, music legend David Bowie passed away and that’s just to name a few. We have everything crossed that 2017 won’t be so traumatic; nothing can top the year of 2016…we hope not anyway! That being said, we have to think positively. As a person, what have you achieved? At school, college, university, work or just life in general, you may have done something you have always wanted to do, or achieved something you never thought you would. Or maybe you didn’t do everything you wanted to, but sometimes it is just impossible to tick everything off. When it comes to New Year’s Resolutions, I’m sure you have made a few. You might want to make a resolution if you’ve eaten your body weight in food. But so what!? You deserve to have two helpings of
26
Christmas pudding. My point is, we are sometimes too ambitious and unrealistic with our New Year’s Resolutions. It’s almost become tradition now to have a list of things you want to achieve by the end of the year, but they are often forgotten by the end of January. So how do we stick to our New Year’s Resolutions? It has been proven by psychologists that if we do choose to make resolutions, we should make them positive and achievable. For example, instead of saying you want to lose weight, you may say you want to become fitter and healthier. You are much less likely to give up your New Year’s resolution if you feel as though you are actually making progress. Making yourself a plan will help your progress and it won’t feel as though you have a giant mountain to climb. If you aren’t hitting your target, you are more likely to feel negative about it and not continue with your resolution. A second tip is to not set yourself too many targets. I would recommend setting yourself one main goal and then perhaps two smaller ones in different areas. For example, one goal may to be more effective in managing your stress levels, another may be to spend more time with your family and friends and the final one may be to have reached a specific target in your career. These all cover different aspects of life but you can choose a main one to focus on and they don’t have to take all year to yourself one main objective means you are more likely

to achieve it. Don’t wait until New Year’s Eve to make your resolution because you need to really think about what you want to achieve. Avoid previous resolutions; are you really going to achieve it if you have tried for the past 3 years? Often, telling your friends and family about your goals will help because they are likely to give support and you will feel as though you can’t back out of whatever you decide to attempt. And finally, don’t worry if you revert to your old habits because this is only natural from time to time but remember to reward yourself if you achieve something positive with your resolution. Remember that if an old habit sneaks back in, it is only a temporary setback and not a reason to give up.

Grown Ups Choice Returned: Arcarnania Warriors Book 1 by Jane Hinchey If I’m totally honest I wasn’t sure what to expect from the cover of this book, but I was pretty sure it wouldn’t be my sort of thing… well it seems I’m still able to be surprised, which is lovely to know! The thought of an alien romance didn’t appeal, but Returned is a well written and interesting tale of a young police officer being abducted, and then returned to a much changed, futuristic Earth. Her brooding relationship with an alien is well balanced and not too graphic. The characters are well rounded and are slowly and carefully developed, the relationships with other female ‘beings’ while on board ship are a little thin on emotion, but the detail and settings are well crafted. I enjoyed the story far more than I expected, and the romance seemed secondary to the evolving situation on Earth—which was very intriguing. Jane Hinchey has also written First Blade, and Returned is book one in a series.
Children’s Choice Little Mouse’s Sweet Treat by Shana Hollowell We so enjoyed the gentle rhyming of this story, so much so that the kids tried to guess which words would come next - learning and fun! None of the other animals treats, were quite what Mouse was looking for, although we liked that all the animals were willing to share. Mouse eventually makes it home to find exactly what he wanted was there all along - we enjoyed the illustrations and finding the snails, as well as seeing so many animals and foods. It was a good book for our mix of ages, as the older ones could read to the younger ones and everyone got something from it. Great fun x

COMMUNITY - MAJOR OAK LEAVES LEGACY IN BROXTOWE AN OAK SAPLING, grown from an acorn from the world famous Major Oak tree was recently planted in Stapleford. Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor Graham Harvey joined Norman Lewis MBE, Vice Patron of Sherwood Forest Trust to plant the sapling in Queen Elizabeth II Park, Toton Lane, Stapleford to mark the end of 2016, the Queen’s 90th year. The sapling was one of a number grown by Mr Lewis, who also has local links with the Friends of Toton Fields community group. Dr Patrick Candler, Chief Executive of the Trust said: “This is a wonderful way to end 2016 by planting a sapling that comes from a tree more than 1,000 years old. This tree could well be alive in Queen Elizabeth II Park 1,000 years from now. It is also appropriate that Norman Lewis helped to plant the tree as his expert knowledge, care and attention that enabled the sapling to grow from a small acorn’. Left to right: Borough Councillor Ray Darby, Mayors’ Escort grand-daughter Amy Daykin, Mayor of Broxtowe Councillor Graham Harvey, Mr Norman Lewis MBE, Borough Councillor John McGrath.
The Sherwood Forest Trust also helped with heather seed for heathland restoration projects at the Hemlock Stone, Bramcote Hills Park and Bramcote Ridge and Mr Lewis donated a second tree planted at Hall Om Wong in Kimberley, grown from an acorn from the Parliament Oak, a less well known tree but one with historic importance as it is not only older than the Major Oak, but has a history linking to King John and the Magna Carta. The Major Oak is one of the most well-known trees in the world and in 2014 was

RESOLVING TO SING IN 2017!
Members of a choir are encouraging everyone to make their New Year’s resolution to sing, whatever their ability. The Tuneless Choir, open to those who “can’t carry a tune in a bucket”, began in West Bridgford in January 2016. It has proved to be very popular, with well over a hundred people attending twice a month. Many other Tuneless Choirs have formed around the country, with one in Beeston due to start up on 11th January. Founder Nadine Cooper says, “We knew about the benefits of singing before we launched the choir last year. It releases endorphins – the brain’s feel-good chemicals. Singing in a choir has been shown to have an even greater effect – it can reduce anxiety and depression, and increase life satisfaction. Since the launch, new research has shown that singing in a choir helps reduce stress and boost the immune system, which suggests that it can help the body fight serious illnesses such as cancer, alongside conventional treatments of course. People say it takes their minds off the day’s troubles and boost their moods, but mostly that they do it simply because it’s fun.“ Nadine believes that since most serious New Year’s resolutions slip before the first month of the year is out, it makes more sense to resolve to do something enjoyable. “Many people I know had a difficult 2016 personally, and many bizarre and terrible things happened around the world, to the point that one dictionary company recently chose ‘surreal’ as its word of the year. Instead of beating ourselves up about bad habits, we should take the opportunity to do
something uplifting in the New Year. I’ll hit the age of 50 in 2017 and we used to always be singing at school, at church, and round the Guides’ campfire when I was young, and so this is about getting back to that simple pleasure. The leader of the West Bridgford choir, Bernie Bracha, says, “Whatever your ability you can find somewhere to sing, and I’d encourage you to do so. Tuneless Choir is making a difference to people’s lives, and we would love more people to discover the delight of belting out the lyrics to their favourite songs, whether it is with us or with a more conventional choir.” The Tuneless Choir sings popular songs, with ‘Daydream Believer’ by The Monkees topping a recent poll. People aren’t divided into parts, so everyone sings the lead vocals at whatever pitch they can manage. This results in a sound much better than the sum of the individuals, and one which has been compared to a rugby or football crowd. “Having no fear of judgement really does give our choir members the confidence to ‘sing like no one is listening’, which has become our motto.” adds Bernie. The Beeston Tuneless Choir will meet on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month, with the launch event on Wednesday 11th January from 7.45pm to 9.30pm. This will be held at the Methodist Church, Chilwell Road, NG9 1EH. Places can be booked online at https://www.eventbrite. co.uk/e/tuneless-choir-beeston-launchtickets-29523848626 First time attendance at either choir costs £10 including registration. It’s then the equivalent of £5 per week for a term, or £7 if you “pay as you go”, including refreshments.

Health and Well Being Tips for good mental health It is natural to struggle with life's challenges at times but evidence shows there are things you can do to reduce stress and improve good mental health and wellbeing. Five ways of wellbeing Connect with people - People who take time to develop relationships feel better about themselves. Sharing problems and situations that make you stressed makes them easier to deal with. Be active - You don't have to go to the gym. Find any activity that you enjoy and make it part of your life. Keep learning - Learning new skills can boost your confidence and give you a sense of achievement. Setting yourself goals and challenges, whether at work or outside helps to build confidence and thus deal with stress. You don’t need to earn a qualification, just find something interesting to do. Give to others - From small acts of kindness to large volunteering efforts giving can improve your mental wellbeing and help build your social networks. Be aware - Take notice of your feelings, thoughts, body and the world around you. Getting out and active If you are looking for extra support and to meet new people in a similar situation our co-prodcution scheme provides you with this opportunity. Through this scheme you can attend peer support and community support groups in Nottinghamshire. At the groups you can share experiences and talk to other people, get active, learn new skills and find out about volunteering. The Co-production Network helps people to sustain well-being, develop their potential and enhance their quality of live. It also enables creative opportunities and the ability to help each other to build a well connected community through additional links to other community groups, projects and services. Visit the Nottinghamshire Help Yourself website to find out more about co-production and the different support groups. http://www.nottshelpyourself.org.uk/ 50

Your blood saves lives. Your blood donation is an amazing gift to people who need it in an emergency or for on-going medical treatment. We need over 6,000 people to give blood every day to meet the needs of hospitals and patients. Each year we need approximately 200,000 new donors, as some donors can no longer give blood. Most people between the ages of 17-65 are able to give blood. Around half our current donors are over 45. That’s why we need more young people (over the age of 17) to start giving blood, so we can make sure we have enough blood in the future.Find out who can give blood, and then book an appointment to give blood. To find out if you can give blood please go on our website: https://www.blood.co.uk/who-can-give-blood/ You can call us on 0300 123 23 23 To advertise call 07854990608 or visit our website www.beechpublications.co.uk GRAPEVINE-WOLLATON Jan 2017.indd 61
