PLUMBING & HEATING
Your Local Plumber
Editor’s Note Hello everyone, The winner of the Steve Harley Acoustic competition last month was Mr. W from Attenborough. He sent me a message of how much he enjoyed the gig and had excellent seats in the venue! Unfortunately, there is no music/gig tickets to win this month, we did have some lined up, but due to the current situation we have had to hold back. Don’t worry we’ll hopefully pick that up again in the near future. We will all have to adhere to the true British spirit of “Keep calm and carry on” ! Wishing you all a happy and healthy month. Take care.

Welcome to our new gardening feature! Hello Gardeners… It‛s Gardener Steve here! and I‛m bringing you gardening tips, news and events. Hello Gardeners… Welcome to March & Aprils ‘Life in the Garden’. Hope you have all been enjoying the spring displays, our gardens have suffered over winter and that not with the cold but the amount of rainfall we have had and made it difficult to get out into them. April is a busy month in the garden and with Easter looming, its always the time we venture out and do some gardening over the holidays and them pesky weeds will be making an appearance thick and fast. I am still busy in my new garden which I have had for a year now, I have lot of spring bulbs and because I am not sure how my garden is going to play out yet I have a lot of plants in pots for the time being so I am tending to them regularly. My rhubarb crown that was smothered in weeds and grass when I moved in and now I have cleared around it and fed it well and mulched it its doing much better. Please keep getting in touch and letting me know what your up to in your gardens whether it’s a new garden or an established one I would love to hear from you. Contact details are below. Happy Gardening Everyone!

Some jobs to be doing in the coming month. •
Lift and divide perennial plants now to improve their health and create new plants for your garden.
•
Divide Hostas before they come into leaf.
•
Plant summer-flowering bulbs such as Lilies, Gladiolus and Crocosmia into borders or containers.
•
Apply a high nitrogen lawn fertiliser, mow the grass regular but keep the blades fairly high for the first few cuts
•
Mulch your beds and borders with layer of well rotted manure or garden compost to prepare for the growing season. You can also work in a general purpose fertiliser such as pelleted chicken manure.

Broomfield Winter Garden Opening Success The weekend of the 29th February and 1st March saw Broomfield College hold their first winter garden opening and what a success it was. Both days saw people come and look at the newly renovated winter glade which has been an ongoing project for the last four years. The sun was shining and the plants were glowing, there were all different sorts of plants some had flower with the Hellebore and the fragrant Daphne, there were coloured stems such as the Cornus and ornamental bramble and early flowering bulbs with Narcissus February Gold too the garden looked at picture. Over the weekend there were over 700 visitors raising £1060 which this money will go back into the garden fund to continue working and restoring the gardens at the Morley campus. Speaking with Head Gardener on the day and she was pleasantly surprised how many visitors came along and said it wouldn’t of been possible with out her volunteer group. Keep up the great work. If you fancy joining their growing volunteer team, get in touch with Head Gardener, Sam Harvey samantha. harvey@derby-college.ac.uk Day trip to North Wales Bodnant Garden & Llandudno - Saturday 23rd May Join us in May as we are heading to North Wales and there are two options for this trip,
Option 1: Time in Llandudno or Option 2: Short stay in Llandudno and Bodnant Garden Bodnant Garden is one of the most popular gardens in the UK, situated above the River Conwy overlooking the Valley towards the Carneddau mountains. Founded in 1874 and developed by five generations of one family, the garden spans 80 acres of hillside and includes formal Italianate terraces, informal shrub borders stocked with plants from around the world, The Dell, a gorge garden, a number of notable trees and a waterfall. Since 2012, new areas have opened including the Winter Garden, Old Park Meadow, Yew Dell and The Far End, a riverside garden. Bodnant Garden is of course famous for its Laburnum arch, the longest in the UK, which flowers in May and June. The garden is also celebrated for its link to the plant hunters of the early 1900s whose expeditions formed the base of the garden’s four National Collections of plants – Magnolia, Embothrium, Eucryphia and Rhododendron Llandudno is a seaside resort, town and community in Conwy, North Wales and located on the Creuddyn peninsula, which protrudes into the Irish Sea. Vibrant Llandudno is the largest seaside

FRESH START FOR HENS (Please read). Part 1 So, what is all the talk about ‘saving hens’ about then? Well believe me these girls deserve saving. All commercial farmers, battery, barn or free range, will get rid of their flock at just 72 weeks. Giving the hens a life expectancy of only 18 months. Yet the girls will happily go on laying for 4-5 years. Commercial pressure on the farmer means the hen is not viable after 72 weeks. The absolute certainty of an egg a day becomes less guaranteed so they are sold on - for cheap meat pies and dog/cat food This is where FRESH START FOR HENS steps in. We pay the farmer the same as the slaughter house. Arriving at crack of dawn every single girl is crated up (and that is usually 2.5003000 hens) and hired vans with volunteers drive all over the country taking these smashing pets to their new loving homes. Have you ever thought of having a hen as a pet? Believe me they are easier than most domestic animals and will reward you with the best eggs you have EVER tasted. These friendly little critters have huge personalities, adore their humans ( they love being held and cuddled and quickly fall asleep in your arms), eat all the veggie waste from your kitchen and cost zero as you never buy an egg again!, Your local collection point is Ilkeston. Do go to our website Freshstartforhens.co.uk, visit Ilkeston Fresh Start for Hens on FB or ring Dee 07946 65317

Sherwood Forest on target to become the world’s first 5G ‘Connected Forest’
Nottinghamshire County Council leads a major consortium which includes testing a new virtual reality experience at the home of Robin Hood Visitors to the Sherwood Forest Country Park will be able to get a 3D experience of the forest like never before following the go-ahead for a £10m project to test the latest 5G technology at the worldrenowned tourist destination. Government funding worth £5 million, which will be matched by a consortium led by Nottinghamshire County Council, has been announced as part of series of government-funded trials to seize the potential of modern technology by the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. The £10m funding will launch the 25-month test bed and trial programme to create the world’s first 5G Connected Forest at the Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre and surrounding area, including Rufford Abbey Country Park, which are managed by the RSPB and Parkwood Outdoors on behalf of the County Council.
34
5G is the next generation of connective technology that can power machines, objects, and devices including driving vehicles remotely and creating faultless mobile phone connections in places where this was previously not possible. Focusing on how 5G technology can benefit tourism and environment sectors, the pilot, which starts next month, will test new approaches to using virtual and augmented reality experiences for visitors as well as at ways to improve visitor accommodation and transport. Visitors will be able to experience the new technology first hand as early as March 2021, during the first year of the programme. The project will also look at ways that 5G can be used to improve the management of the forest and monitor its health. A 5G Innovation Hub will also be developed to provide facilities for research and for businesses to explore new applications for this cutting-edge technology as well as an opportunity for local people to upgrade skills. Highlights of the 5G Connected Forest project will include: Bringing the Robin Hood legend to life at the Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre via an incredible 3D/4D virtual reality experience. Testing of semi-autonomous vehicles to transport visitors, particularly those with mobility issues, with plans for on-board narration to describe the history and background of the site. Technology to teach children about the natural habitat of the forest to inspire the next generation of conservationists.

Testing the state-of-the-art digital technologies such as drones and robots to help survey and monitor the health of the forest while minimising the impact on the environment.
“With £5 million of government funding matched by industry, I’m very excited to see what lessons can be learned about the innovative ways 5G can boost Britain’s brilliant tourism experiences.”
Trialling more energy-efficient visitor accommodation using smart devices to reduce the environmental impact of a visitor’s stay as well as other improvements to encourage longer stays in the county.
Welcoming the Government funding, Nottinghamshire County Council leader, Councillor Kay Cutts MBE said:
A 5G Innovation Hub to host new research and to provide businesses with access to facilities to trial new ideas and innovations. An education and skills programme for local people and businesses. The consortium is led by Nottinghamshire County Council and includes Nottingham Trent University, Birmingham City University, Netmore IOT Solutions, Gooii, ISPB, Harworth Group, Centre Parcs UK, Stagecoach East Midlands and Parkwood Outdoors. Connected Forest is one of eight national 5G programmes announced and is one of only two projects to be led by a local authority. Oliver Dowden, Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport said: “Connecting the ancient Sherwood Forest with next-generation 5G technology will help bring its story and legendary characters to life through virtual reality, with huge knock-on benefits for Nottinghamshire’s visit economy.
“Nottinghamshire is once again at the forefront of latest technology, bringing together some of the best academic minds, 3D creators and experts in 5G. “This will be the world’s first testing, of 5G, in a forest. It will bring the stories associated with Robin Hood and our ancient woodland to life in a new way. “Together with our partners, we will create a virtual reality experience for visitors to Sherwood Forest to attract even more families and visitors to Nottinghamshire from across the UK and overseas, bringing benefits to local businesses and our economy.” by Nottinghamshire County Council Photo: Robin Hood with Council Leader, Cllr Kay Cutts with young visitors from Derbyshire, George, 11 and Huey, 7 trying out a trial version of the VR headsets. It is hoped that VR experience at Sherwood will be available from next March 2021.

Message from Councillor John McGrath - Stapleford Hi everyone, Maggie here, at least Brexit is now over and done with, lets just move on regardless of who you voted for and get on with it. Well done to our new MP Darren Henry, who beat the local lad and a good friend of mine Greg. Let us hope he will represent and listen to the people of Broxtowe and come out and talk to people on how to improve our area. We are putting together plans for the possibility of a 25 million pound improvement scheme for Stapleford. Some great ideas are being put forward from business people, community groups, local people and councillors. The meetings are once a month, look on the Broxtowe website. Our team of officers and professional people will put the ideas into a formulated plan and send it to Boris's government, let us hope they keep their promise to invest in our towns. Here's one for you, when was the last time there was a major development in Stapleford? ie: in roads, shops and community centres. The new town council is working well together, there are a couple of new ideas, the allotments committee and the events committee which with the ideas we get funding for events and other things in the town. We have put in a bid to have the street planters back and the street furniture cleaned and painted. Let us hope that the County councillors who have hopefully signed this off want the same for our town, as nothing has been done with the pot holes, the zebra crossings, the gullies and the roads which are a shambles. The first big event that the town council events committee have done a hell of a lot of work for, is the Stapleford VE celebrations on Hickings Lane park on the 9th May. Football match against the army team from the barracks, stalls, small funfair, bar, local artists and schools performing, all to remember and celebrate what people gave for us 75 years ago. I would like to thank Milan and Steve both leader and deputy leader of Broxtowe borough council for giving us the funding when I approached them, and our town council events team which should make this a great day for all to enjoy. Stapleford town are still doing well, with youth now their priority to help develop young talent from the town and surrounding areas, its a pity the weather has hit the fixtures so hard, come along now and support them on Hickings lane. We are also trying to get funding for CCTV on there from Paddy Tipping. Yours John McGrath (Maggie) PS anyone interested in becoming involved with VE day? Please contact the events committee.

The Studio at Padge Road Living well with dementia and related disorders A unique new concept in dementia care has come to Beeston. The Studio, at Padge Road, is an arts centre designed so that people with dementia can try out new skills or practise familiar leisure activities with support. With provision for music making, singing, exercise, theatre, crafts and visual arts, The Studio is a place for people to ‘connect and create’, supported by professional ArtsCare Assistants. Meanwhile family carers can have a well- earned break. The Studio’s team of ArtsCare Assistants is led by professional artists Emma Wass and Sarah Griffiths-Wright, who devise and lead a varied programme of individual and group-based creative pursuits tailored to participants’ abilities and interests. Everyone is fully assessed at the outset in a free, introductory session. No previous artistic experience is required; the principle is that human beings are all creative. For example, Emma is trained in the Timeslips technique, a storytelling approach that uses the inspiration of all present to weave a narrative. This shows powerfully that people with memory problems can still use their imaginations. The purpose of The Studio is to inspire a person’s natural creativity and we will tailor a programme to individual interests and capabilities. The activities will have seasonal themes and include: painting, sculpture, sketching, woodwork, collage, singing, making music, film screenings, seated exercise, shared reading, puppetry, poetry, art appreciation and gallery ‘visits’ enabled by new technology – plus lots more. Home Instead are proud to finance and support The Studio. We know that many of the people we support can greatly benefit from creative activities and having a local facility of this type will make a lot of difference to them and their carers. Our aim is to become a centre of excellence in dementia care, based on evidence and experience of how arts-led interventions can promote health and wellbeing. A non-profit organisation, Imagine Artsdem Broxtowe CIC, has been formed to run the centre. If you, a relative, a friend or somebody you support has been diagnosed with dementia we will invite you for an assessment. We will provide more information and recommend a good trial day for a free tester session. Derbyshire hospice thrilled to join this summer’s Derby Ram Trail. Visitors to this summer’s Derby Ram Trail will be able to enjoy a unique Ram sponsored by Treetops Hospice Care, the city’s local hospice. The charity has sponsored one of the thirty larger-than-life Ram sculptures that will be located around Derby city centre this summer (19 June - 28 August), predicted to draw thousands of visitors to the area as well as engage local residents of all ages. Each Ram is designed and decorated by a different artist. Treetops has chosen a design by award-winning local artist and designer Lynne Hollingsworth from Duffield, who will begin painting the sculpture at the Treetops site in Risley in the coming weeks.
“The Derby Ram Trail will be a brilliant way for people to have fun, visit the city centre, and find out more about the different sponsors.” Treetops Hospice Care provides emotional support and nursing care for adults with life limiting conditions, those who’ve been bereaved, and their families. Services include Support and Information, Wellbeing Space, Hospice at Home nurses and Therapeutic Services including counselling, art therapy and complementary therapy. The Derby Ram Trail is a free art sculpture trail organised by Derby Museums, together with Wild in Art and the Cathedral Quarter Business Improvement District.
The Treetops Ram will help to raise the profile of the hospice and its services, as Treetops Chief Executive Julie Heath explains: “We’re really thrilled to be a sponsor for one of the Derby Rams and will be excited to see the response from people when they visit it on the Trail. We have lots of exciting events planned around the Treetops Ram through which we can engage and promote the hospice within the local community, support a great initiative for Derby and also fund raise for the charity. “We are also planning some Ram-themed sessions for our patients and their families, and want to use the Ram as a way to recognise and thank our volunteers, staff and supporters.

About Derby Ram Trail The Derby Ram Trail is a spectacular free art sculpture trail coming to Derby in the summer of 2020. From 19 June to 28 August 2020 a flock of fabulously colourful and unique rams will take you on a trail around the beautiful city of Derby. The ram sculpture is based on the mythical Derby Ram from the 18th Century song, which according to legend was ten yards high with enormous horns and a huge flowing fleece. The story tells how people from all over came to see the huge Derby Ram, and we are excited that people will once again flock to Derby. The Derby Ram Trail is brought to you by Derby Museums, together with Wild in Art and Presenting Partner, Cathedral Quarter Business Improvement District (BID). Wild in Art is a leading producer of creative events that transform places into free, family-friendly outdoor art galleries. The Derby Ram Trail is raising money for Derby Museums, helping to secure the future of free museums for everyone to enjoy. Every pound raised will be doubled by a grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. www.derbyramtrail.org @derbyramtrail | #DerbyRamTrail

''Stapleford's Wartime Spirit'' Tuesday 14th April - Saturday 16th May 2020Stapleford Library, 25, Church Street, Stapleford. 'To commemorate the 75th anniversary of VE Day, ''Stapleford's Wartime Spirit'' is a visual celebration of our town's war effort. An exhibition of images and artifacts, it illustrates how the residents of Stapleford got stuck in, did their bit, and celebrated their victory. .................................................................................................................. Thanks to an anonymous donation to Stapleford Community Group we now have enough money to purchase a VE Day 75 Memorial Bench which will be installed in the Stapleford Town Square ahead of Friday 8th May as part of #StaplefordRemembers . We put a call out earlier to raise the funds needed for the bench and within less than an hour we had been contacted with an offer to cover the cost of the purchase. Once delivered this will be installed in the Stapleford Town Square ahead of planned events of Friday 8th May which fall under the heading of #StaplefordRemembers.#StaplefordRemembers was set up to commemorate events that have taken place in the past and so we can continue to remember them. In 2014 #StaplefordRemembers organised events to commemorate the start of the great war. In 2018 #StaplefordRemembers organised events to commemorate the end of the great war. Now here is 2020 and #StaplefordRemembers is organising events to commemorate VE Day and already plans for the commemoration of VJ Day later this year. To keep updated and to find out what is being organised please follow www.staplefordcommunitygroup. org.uk as information will be updated on there as and when finalised. #StaplefordRemembers is made up of various groups and organisations and individuals from around Stapleford and we are forever thankful for the continued help and support they all give in bringing these events together. It’s all about bringing unity to the community and remembering those who are sadly no longer with us and gave so much for the freedoms we take for granted today.
