Local teen Emma Snow writes about various topics and events each month in the Grapevine. “A voice for the young people in our Community”. You might not realise you are a feminist…

Before you make any prejudgments, we need to get the meaning straight. Feminism. The definition is simple: the advocacy of women’s rights on the ground of equality of the sexes. It isn’t about women being more important than men or shaming the male gender. Even in today’s society, it is a topic which has stigma surrounding it. What if you state you are a feminist? People roll their eyes. I struggle to understand why, when so many people are feminists without really realising it. Recently, when talking to my male friends on the subject, some didn’t realise that men can be feminists although most do believe in equal rights for men and woman. To my delight, there were others that did know the true meaning of feminism. In today’s society, why do so many of us still accept gender inequality? Often activists (whether male or female) are shamed for standing up for what is right. Usually in these articles, I try to provide a two-sided argument, but this time there isn’t a valid one for accepting an unequal society. In politics, there are undoubtedly more males than females,

18

so it is empowering when young girls are activists, fighting for what they believe. We could all sit back and watch, but who would then contribute to a changing society? On a more positive note, some businesses pride themselves in promoting gender equality. It isn’t about having equal numbers of men and women in a work place. It is about men and women having equal job opportunities and being treated as equals. It should be the best person for the job based on skills, regardless of gender. Let’s focus on another positive movement in society: not shaming career driven women who wish to return to work after having a child. Perhaps they need to return to support their family, or they have worked hard earlier in life to acquire a position where they take pride in their role in the workplace, and wish to maintain it. There is nothing, finances aside, to say that a woman cannot balance a family and a career. When it comes to taking care of children, there is actually no real reason why women shouldn’t return to work if they wish to. Psychological studies have proven that a male is perfectly capable of being the primary caregiver, therefore forming secure attachments and not affecting the psychological development of the child. This should reassure women that they don’t have to feel guilty about returning to work shortly after giving birth.

There are, however, still some inequalities that persist. For example, in some colleges both locally and across the UK, girls are being targeted for causing a distraction due to the clothes they choose to wear. In some cases, yes, the clothes worn may be a little unacceptable for college. However girls not being allowed to, for example, show their shoulders because they are supposedly a distraction to male peers and teachers doesn’t seem quite right. This is particularly so when male students are allowed to wear shorts in some colleges. Sending a girl home and disrupting her education is deemed acceptable as a punishment, but what about punishing the males who objectify women? Public figures such as Emma Watson and Beyoncé have helped to raise the issues surrounding feminism, helping many more to understand and help create small steps towards a more equal world. Emma Watson once quoted ‘I have realised that fighting for women’s rights has too often become synonymous with man-hating. If there is one thing I know for certain, it is that this has to stop’. It is also really encouraging to see that many young teens of both genders are raising awareness of gender equality and happily proclaiming themselves to be feminists. This can hopefully continue and society should gradually change to become even more equal. Article by Emma Snow You can now read more from me on my new blog: https://emmsnow.blogspot. co.uk

Here are some tips for watering your house plants whilst on holiday.

Wick method - good for large plants, use a large container pot full of water and a piece of capillary matting. Place one end of the matting in the pot of water and the other end tucked in the plant pot; this will transport water to the plant whilst you are on holiday. Capillary matting - for smaller plants. Group all your small plants together. Place the matting on the draining board in your kitchen, fill the sink with water and place one end of the matting in the sink. Place all your small plants on the matting which will draw all the water they need. If all fails just ask your neighbour to water them Plant of the Month - Thalictrum aquilegiifolium -Thundercloud’ This is an erect herbaceous perennial which grows to around 90cm in height in early summer. It bears large fluffy heads of small flowers with deep purple stamens. It’s best grown in moist, humus- rich soil in partial shade.

Fresh Advice WHOLE OF MARKET MORTGAGE ADVICE HOW MUCH COULD YOU SAVE ON YOUR MORTGAGE?

In today's competitive mortgage market, many borrowers choose to switch their mortgage every few years in order to take advantage of the new rates on offer. Those that remain on the same deal for the full term of their loan could lose out on a range of potential benefits, not least the opportunity to reduce the total amount paid back, which could be a significant amount in some cases. In simple terms, remortgaging involves switching your current mortgage to a new deal, arranged either with your existing lender or with a new lender. If you're paying your lender's Standard Variable Rate (SVR), it's likely that you are able to secure a better rate on other available products. This could allow you to save money on your monthly repayments, or to repay your mortgage sooner. If you would like to discuss the potential saving available through remortgaging then call us today for your free initial mortgage consultation. Fresh Advice are also able to advise on and arrange the following products: • • • • •

Stapleford Fire Station welcomed some special guests to the station recently. The event which was organised by Richard MacRae was to say thank you to three of the towns young people. Jay, Rhys and Danni have all been praised by us previously for their quick and prompt actions when faced with emergencies. This event saw them joining us on parade, receiving certificates and even joining us for some training. Councillor MacRae said “this town is full of great young people, these three demonstrate that, we are really proud of them” Our Crew Manager Kevin Tedds recently spoke to BBC Radio Nottingham, you can hear what he had to say by following this A massive thank you to all at Stapleford link. BROXTOWE CONTINUES TO DEVELOP A DEMENTIA FRIENDLY COMMUNITY BROXTOWE HAS RENEWED its commitment to being a Dementia Friendly Community and the Council recently hosted a Dementia Friends training session which was attended by Mayor of the Borough, Councillor Graham Harvey. “So many people are affected by dementia and I’m honoured to be one of the Council’s Dementia Friends. The training really opened my eyes to some of the daily challenges that people with dementia face and I would urge our residents to take part themselves so that we as a community can be dementia friendly” said Councillor Harvey. The Council pledged its support to people with dementia in 2014 by signing a Dementia Action Alliance Declaration to help local people ‘live well with dementia.’ Since then, a pioneering housing scheme to offer dementia friendly bungalows has opened in Eastwood and more dementia bungalows are currently being built in Beeston. Accessible leisure activities are also accessible throughout the Borough and a Dementia Café has been set up in Beeston by the Beeston Dementia Friends Group. Other initiatives that the Council is developing include: Identifying Dementia Champions for the Council and training employees and Councillors to become Dementia Friends. Devise e-learning material for Council employees Introduce Dementia-friendly signage Strengthen links with Care Homes and encourage involvement in Older Person’s Week Support businesses in Broxtowe to sign up to the action alliance and adopt dementia-friendly approaches Establish an employee focus group For more information please visit www.broxtowe.gov.uk/dementia For further information on the campaign and how to become a Dementia Friend, please visit www.dementiafriends.org.uk or watch the video at www.youtube.com/watch?v=LfrnWrpPq54

Saxons Invade Stapleford for Plaque Unveiling Saxons invaded Stapleford as a new plaque was unveiled at the Saxon Cross. Local schoolchildren were entertained by the University of Nottingham Medieval Combat Society Re-enactment Group at the event, alongside representatives from St. Helen's Church, where the Cross is situated, Stapleford Town Council and Broxtowe Borough Council who have all contributed time and funds to the project. As part of the project, the existing information board, which was rotting, has been replaced with a plinth, inset with a stainless steel information plaque to provide visitors to the historical site information about the Cross and its origins. The cross, which is thought to date from between 800 and 850 AD is a Grade I Scheduled Monument of exceptional architectural and historic interest and of national archaeological importance. The shaft is carved from millstone grit and, although weathered, complex interlace decoration in low relief can be discerned on all four faces. A panel on the south face depicts a standing figure thought to be the Archangel Michael with halo, wings, spear and serpent at the foot. The cross was found in pieces lying in the churchyard in 1760. Some parts were missing but the shaft itself was erected by the side of the road opposite to where The Old Cross Inn now stands. In 1906 increased traffic and damage led to the suggestion that the cross be moved into the churchyard, but local people strenuously objected. In 1928 the Church Commissioners gifted a small area of the churchyard to Stapleford Rural District Council and the cross was moved to its present site. The cross is now in the care of Broxtowe Borough Council. 34

The Great British High Street High Streets Minister Marcus Jones (7 July 2016) called on communities across the country to enter their villages, towns and cities into the Great British High Street competition 2016.

that follow proper planning procedures are penalized and limited in their progress. Our view. It makes no sense to have conservation order on the High Street and allow plastic, tin and concrete fabrications to be put up a few yards away. Small businesses are the backbone of the UK economy, Across the UK they provide 60% of private sector jobs , 33% of private sector turnover and 47% of employment. Small businesses are vital to the town and part of what make communities. The character of the town is in its independent shops that bring variety and individuality. Councils can encourage shoppers to the town centre by increasing Free Parking and helping independents. Shoppers can make conscious choices to support small businesses, which in turn helps develop thriving town centres. Article by K.Lakhani BSc MCOptom Dip Tp IP Specialist Optometrist Jaysons Opticians.

Now in its 3rd year, the competition celebrates the great work that is being done to revive, adapt and diversify the nation’s high streets and is an opportunity for councils, businesses, community groups and volunteers to learn from the very best. Last year’s competition saw a recordbreaking 230 entries and attracted over 200,000 public votes. With new categories, new prizes, including the chance to win up to £ 10,000 each, the minister said he expected to see even more competition entries, this year. Prior to 1980s, all shopping centres were located within city centres. Out of town shopping centres sprang up with the increase of the cars, in 1960 39.5% of UK households had no cars, but by the year 2015, this had drastically fallen to 24%. iTunes Gift Cards favoured by fraudsters Victims have handed over approximately £520k to fraudsters who have asked for payment using iTunes Gift Cards, since May 2016. iTunes is an online media player developed by Apple and used to organise and access music, films and TV programmes. Apple offer iTunes Gift Cards for sale which can be redeemed on the iTunes Store and various other Apple services. Over the past few months fraudsters have been tricking victims into buying iTunes Gift Cards and asking them to read out/send the serial code for payment in various types of fraud. The fraudsters don’t need the physical card to redeem the value and once the code is sent, the money is lost. There has been a total reported loss of approximately £520k since May 2016, highlighting a lack of awareness. iTunes Gift Cards used in various types of fraud Action Fraud have seen this method of payment being used in types of fraud which include; Loan Scams, fake mis-sold PPI (Payment Protection Insurance) and various banking errors. Additionally there has been a trend in fraudsters pretending to be from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) and asking for payment of debt/taxes using this method. One victim recently reported losing £46k to fraudsters who asked for payment using in iTunes Gift Cards. Here is what Apple say: “iTunes Gift Cards are solely for the purchase of goods and services on the iTunes Store and App Store. Fraudsters selling non-existent drones

Online shopping websites are being utilised by fraudsters to advertise drones of various specifications for competitive prices which do not exist. Drones are personal flying devices that often carry cameras and can be navigated remotely by smart phones or controllers. Fraudsters are capitalising on their recent popularity and advertising nonexistent drones lower than the recommended retail price to tempt buyers. After victims agree to purchase the drone, the fraudsters request payment to be paid via bank transfer saying that it will quicken the delivery process. After transferring the money the buyers never receive the drone and the fraudster blocks the victim to prevent further conversation. How to protect yourself Check the validity of the post. Avoid paying by bank transfer and instead use an online payment option such as PayPal, which helps to protect you. Check feedback online by searching the associated phone numbers or email addresses of the seller. Feedback will give you useful information about recent transactions other buyers have made. If the item is below market value consider whether this is an opportunity too good to be true. Fake holding accounts target car buyers online

Shoppers in the market for a new car are being warned to keep an eye out for fraudulent emails when looking to buy vehicles online. Victims have received emails claiming to be from ‘Amazon Payments’ or ‘Amazon Flexible Payment Services’ after agreeing to buy. These claim to be bank accounts that hold the buyer’s money for one week before releasing it to the seller. Fake holding accounts The emails are designed to get victims of the scam to pay upfront before visiting the seller to collect the vehicle, claiming they have a one-week cooling off period to reclaim the payment if they change their mind. This gives victims the false sense of security that their money is being looked after by a trustworthy third party. In reality, Amazon do not provide ‘escrow’ accounts to look after payments; they have been set up by the fraudsters to trick the buyer into handing money over without having to show them the vehicle they think they’re buying. Protection advice When making a big purchase online such as a new car, always meet the seller face to face first and ask to see the vehicle before transferring any money. If you receive a suspicious email asking for payment, check for spelling or grammar errors and who sent the email. If in doubt, check feedback online by searching the associated phone numbers or email addresses of the seller. If you suspect it may be from fraudsters, report it to Action Fraud.False adverts often offer cars or vehicles for sale well below market value to entice potential victims; always be cautious if it looks too good to be true. Sign up for free to Action Fraud Alert to receive direct, verified, accurate information about scams and fraud in your area by email, recorded voice and text message. Care and Support at Home –

Queen’s Award & Alzheimer’s Workshops

Since Home Instead started in Nottingham we have tried to approach care and support at home in a different way to what was for many years the traditional model. We have introduced the concept of Companionship, matching Clients and CAREGivers based on common interests and preferences, and ensuring that continuity and consistency of care is always our main priority. We are now delighted to have been awarded a very prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise in recognition of the innovative home care service we introduced to the UK in 2005. The award is perhaps a bit extra special for us, it was announced on Her Majesty’s 90th birthday. The Queen’s Award for Enterprise is the UK’s highest accolade for business success. The award organisers recognise that our service addresses a growing demand from an increasing elderly population at a time when some aspects of Local Authority funded care are reported as inadequate. They also recognise that our care is personcentred and includes the social wellbeing of our clients who benefit from minimum one hour visits, delivered by the same CAREGiver who we hand-pick to work with our clients based on shared interests. Our mission is to change the face of ageing by delivering a unique service, tailored to the individual needs of our clients, and it is an absolute honour to receive this recognition.

52

Over the past couple of years, as we have seen a considerable increase in the number of people coming to us seeking help for the support of relatives living with Dementia (Alzheimer’s being the most common form of Dementia), we have also increased our focus on training and development for CAREGivers supporting these Clients. To help those who care for somebody suffering from Alzheimer’s or, those who have a relative or friend living with it, we have developed Workshops that explain the details of the disease and more important, provide practical advice on how to deal with the day to day challenges of supporting and individual with Alzheimer’s. If you would like to attend our Workshops please contact us on 0115 9226116 or email Gemma Poole; Gemma.Poole@homeinstead.co.uk. And finally, our ongoing challenge is to find additional CAREGivers who can help us continue our development in support of our mission to become the UK’s most admired Care Company through changing the face of ageing. We are looking for people who have a caring nature and would like to work a few (or more than a few) hours a week. We provide full training and ongoing support as well as a good rate of pay. If you would like to talk about the role of CAREGiver and the possibility of joining us please contact us on 0115 9677303. by Primo Sule – Primo.Sule@homeinstead. co.uk Tel: 0115 9222396

Book Review by Clare Lyons

The Invisible Library by Genevieve Cogman It’s so great when you come across a really new idea, with unpredictable events and totally new concepts. The Invisible Library is set in a multi-dimensional world, with lots of versions of the Earth and its history. Librarians are able to enter these alternate realities and collect rare or important books to be held in the Invisible Library for all time. It seems an easy task to go and get a book, but these alternate versions of Earth are often very dangerous, as the Librarians often learn to their cost. The story is light and fun, with good strong characters and wild adventures – the London they visit is a mix of humans, vampires and the odd werewolf! It’s a great mix of the known and unknown which means it’s a bit unpredictable and therefore quite interesting. The story rolls along at a good pace and the characters are well described and each reveals more as the book goes on. If you do enjoy this, it is the first of a series – I’ve already got book 2 – The Masked City.

Children’s Choice I Wish I‛d Been Born a Unicorn by Rachel Lyon

We have to get any books written by our namesakes, but this was also lots of fun. It’s from a new Early Readers series so our older two were able to read it to us with some support. The story is of a smelly horse who thinks no one likes him, so dreams of being a Unicorn – however sometimes people like us just the way we are… As this series is aimed at KS1/2 children there are questions at the back to check comprehension which are quite useful. The illustrations are clear and fun and it was a hit in our house. www.mrsaverageevaluates.wordpress.com

Support and advice for new breastfeeding mums Help and advice to new breastfeeding mums in Nottinghamshire has been rated a success. Nottinghamshire County Council’s Public Health team is promoting a number of support groups for new mums wanting to breast feed. BABES (Baby and Breastfeeding Encouragement & Support) drop in sessions run across the county and offer a welcoming atmosphere for all breastfeeding mums who need to share their experiences as well as tips and techniques. The sessions are supported by Infant Feeding Peer Support workers who provide additional support to new mums, outside of what a midwife and health visitor already offer. Dr Kate Allen, Public Health Consultant at Nottinghamshire County Council said: “Breastfeeding is fantastic for the health of both mum and baby, and one of the best ways to bond with your new baby, but it’s not always easy. Most mums need help and support in the early days and weeks of breastfeeding and in Nottinghamshire lots of help is available for new mums. “Any amount of breast feeding has a positive effect but the longer you breast feed the greater the benefits for both mum and baby. It’s recommended that babies should be breast fed for their first six months of life”.

58

Breastfeeding has many benefits Breast milk is the only natural food designed for babies and gives them the best start in life Breast milk provides health benefits for both mother and child. Breastfeeding protects babies from infections and diseases Breastfeeding reduces the risk of diarrhoea and vomiting and having to go to hospital as a result Breastfeeding leads to fewer chest and ear infections and having to go to hospital as a result It’s free – infant formula, the sterilising equipment and feeding equipment can be costly It’s available whenever and wherever baby needs a feed. It’s the right temperature. It can build a strong physical and emotional bond between mother and baby. It lowers mothers’ risk of getting breast and ovarian cancer It naturally burns up to 500 calories a day, helping mum lose weight! Helena Cripps, Public Health Manager at Nottinghamshire County Council said: “BABES breastfeeding groups are run in most local communities by experienced peer supporters, mothers who have experienced the struggles and triumphs of breastfeeding and are on hand to offer support and advice to new mums in their local area. The groups offer advice and practical support as well as the opportunity

Please mention Grapevine when responding to advertisements.

to share tips and techniques. They’re also a great way to make friends and you’re welcome to attend them for as long as you are breastfeeding.” The County Council also works jointly with Clinical Commissioning Groups to commission breastfeeding peer support services to raise the number of mums that initiate and maintain breastfeeding. Currently rates in Notts are lower than the national average, 39.8% of mums are breastfeeding when their baby is 6-8 weeks old in Nottinghamshire compared to 43.8% nationally. Councillor Joyce Bosnjak, chair of the Nottinghamshire Health and Wellbeing Board, said: “World Breastfeeding Week is a great opportunity to highlight once again the many benefits of breastfeeding for both mother and baby. We know it’s not always easy though, which is why there’s support available from other mums who have breastfed their own baby and know what it’s like. “All the evidence shows that giving babies a healthy start by breastfeeding leads to better outcomes in later life. I urge any new mum to give it a go.” Mums can arrange breastfeeding support by speaking to their Midwife or Healt, asking at their local SureStart children’s centre or by following www. nottinghamshire healthcare.nhs.uk/ breastfeeding-useful-information Other places for support or advice include: • NCT: www.nct.org.uk • Breastfeeding Network: www.breastfeedingnetwork.org.uk

Accident on Brookhill Street Stapleford. Late last night (18th July) there was another accident on Brookhill Street, Stapleford. People use Brookhill Street, Stapleford as a Rat run to avoid the High Street and it's speed humps. For a long time now Councillors Ray Darby, John McGrath and myself have been asking for the Speed Humps to be removed from the High street and another form of Traffic Management System used. We have also been raising serious concerns about the amount of Overweight Lorries traveling along Brookhill Street and the amount of Vehicles speeding along Brookhill Street. Something needs to be done now or are Nottinghamshire County Council waiting for another death so the figures allow something to be done. Surely prevention is better than waiting for something to happen. by Councillor Richard MacRae 0774 034 4427 @CllrRichMacRae Stapleford North Ward Stapleford Town Council Broxtowe Borough Council

BROOKHILL STREET-STAPLEFORD

The Stapleford Town Council meeting on the 29th July was literally standing room only. We had to remove 2 tables from the Council Chamber and even then people were spilling out into the corridor. Residents had come to listen to an item I had requested be placed on the Agenda. BROOKHILL STREET. Now due to the most recent accident where a drunk driver crashed on Brookhill Street residents are saying enough is enough. Some action needs to be taken and they are rightly so angry about being ignored. Now that many people attended and wanted to speak I have now organised a Public Meeting which will give people the chance to speak. I will be Charing a meeting on Monday 5th September at 7pm at The Carnegie Hall, Warren Avenue, Stapleford. The Town Clerk kindly offered the use of the Town Hall. I asked the Town Clerk on behalf of the Stapleford Town Council to contact the Highways Department at Nottinghamshire County Council and ask them to actually come to Stapleford and look at the serious problem and help resolve it. Many residents have complained and passed on concerns about the amount of large lorries using the road which has a 7.5tonne weight restriction. One idea is to put warning signs before you get to Brookhill Street at either end and not juse the current ones which you don't see until your turning into the Street. Others ideas have been make the road one way, install speed humps or use speed cameras. The idea of the Public meeting is for those who live on the street to have their say after all its those residents who live there and they must be listened too. I will be inviting the 2 Stapleford County Councillors to attend as well as requesting an Officer from the Highways Department at Nottinghamshire County Council to also attend. My Mum and I delivered a leaflet to every property on Brookhill Street to make the residents aware of the planned public meeting and if your also able to help promote this meeting I would be grateful. You are more than welcome to attend as well. Something has to be done, the people need to be listened too before another person is hurt or worse. Many thanks

Back by popular demand – Beeston Oxjam Ceilidh Yes! Saturday 24th September will again see Beeston jigging, reeling, shimmying and do-si-do-ing the night away in support of the annual Beeston Oxjam Takeover which is now firmly established in Beeston’s cultural and community calendars. Oxjam is a major fundraiser for Oxfam and also the UK’s largest music festival. Taking place mainly in the month of October, it's made up of hundreds of events happening all around the country, all organised by volunteers. Beeston is firmly on the Oxjam map having raised £17,050 last year, more than any other Takeover in the UK. Since Beeston embarked on their fantastic Oxjam journey in 2011, the Beeston Ceilidh Collective has kickstarted the festival with foot stamping, toe tapping music. And with the humour and patience of Steve Benford to guide you through the dances, it doesn’t matter if you don’t know what to do; in fact it’s probably even more fun if you don’t! This year’s ceilidh follows on from other Oxjam events (the Oxjam Quiz, Oxjam Unplugged, and Oxjam Introducing) and will be a great warm up for the main Takeover (October 15th 2016).

So where is this great event happening? Christ Church Hall, Lime Grove Avenue, Beeston, NG9 4AR When? Saturday 24th September 2016, doors open 7.30pm Tickets are priced £10 and are available from Beeston Oxjam & Music Shop or online at www.oxjambeeston.org.

New Season for Sandiacre Male Voice Choir September not only sees the children back in school but it brings in the new season for Sandiacre Male Voice Choir. The choir is in its 96th year and already starting to look ahead to its centenary year and celebrations in 2020 but until then, with our wide repertoire from traditional hymns to theatrical show tunes and modern day songs, we are always looking for opportunities to entertain audiences throughout the county. So if you are holding a private function, a community event or a charity fundraising event then we have the songs to fit all occasions. New members are always welcome to join us and you don’t need to be able to read music! Just drop in, listen or sing along on Monday evenings from 7.30pm at the Methodist Church Hall, Butt Street, Sandiacre. For more information on booking the choir for an event or to talk about joining us please contact the choir Secretary, Anthony Taylor, on 0115 877 8669.
