New Partnership Offers Training To Young People

One hundred work placements will be offered in Broxtowe this academic year thanks to a new partnership between Broxtowe Borough Council and its construction partner, United Living and Central College Nottingham. Around three construction students a week from the college will be offered practical experience and an opportunity to gain valuable skills in a range of trades including plumbing, joinery, painting, plastering and electrical work. The students' efforts will support local communities in residential areas that are administered by Broxtowe Council's Housing Modernisations Contract - a seven year agreement to upgrade managed homes across West Nottinghamshire. They will be working mostly on projects which involve the replacement of kitchens and bathrooms, as well as upgrades to electrical installations. Leader of Broxtowe Borough Council and Portfolio Holder for Environment and Economic Development, Councillor Richard Jackson said: "The Council is incredibly proud of this initiative which will equip young people with the valuable skills they need to enter the world of work and we're delighted to be working for United Living and Central College on this. This is just one of many projects the Council has invested in as part of its commitment to jobs and business growth and we also have a flourishing apprenticeship programme with more apprentices than ever being employed by the Council."

6

Richard Baker, Business Unit Director (Midlands) at United Living, said: "Investing in future skills is a major priority for United Living and so we're delighted to be working with Central College Nottingham and Broxtowe Council on this scheme. Not only will this practical experience help to prepare our students for the world of work, it also has the benefit of connecting them with our local communities to provide a real sense of purpose." Terry Brickles, Head of School for Construction at Central College Nottingham, said: "Central offers hands-on construction training at our Beeston Centre, but industry work experience helps us prepare students for the world of work. Partnerships such as this go towards developing the next generation of skilled trades professionals." The scheme follows the success of a similar trial project held this summer, which saw 12 students on electrical courses attending housing refurbishment sites in Broxtowe to complete 15 hours each of practical experience. For more information, please contact Broxtowe Borough Council on 0115 917 7777

Would you like to make a difference……… Home Instead are delighted to have been revealed as England’s leading homecare provider in a report from the UK’s leading healthcare information specialist, Laing & Buisson. The report, Laing & Buisson’s Care Compliance Monitor, includes headline data from Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection reports and presents a digested view of providers’ performance. We are proud of our success and the fact that more and more people trust us with their support and care, or that of their relatives. We know that our ability to deliver consistent and person centred care is due to the fact that we have a passionate, committed and caring team of CAREGivers. Grapevine Tips In the home 1. Fridges often gather strong odours over time. To avoid this, start by completely emptying your fridge, then give it a wipe to remove any spilled residue. Thoroughly clean the entire interior with a cloth and a baking soda and water solution (2 cups of water / 2 tablespoons baking soda). Then cut an onion in half and place in the fridge – this will absorb any bad odours. 2. Avoid strong smells that can linger in your home and on your fabrics. If you don’t smoke try to avoid letting others smoke in your home. If you do want to remove any strong smells, onions make fantastic odour eliminators. Try cutting a white onion in half , and leave it on the side for a couple of days and the onion will absorb any bad smells.

Keeping warm in winter: Placing foil behind your radiators is another way to ensure your home stays as cosy as can be throughout the winter months. The foil will reflect heat back into your home, helping to prevent it being lost through the walls. Clean your iron: To remedy a scorched iron plate, heat equal parts vinegar and salt in a small pan, allow to cool to a lukewarm temperature. Rub the solution on the cooled iron surface with a cloth to remove dark stains.

Beeston U3A Helps Young People’s Centre Buy New Table Tennis Table Beeston U3A’S Table Tennis Group is flourishing. The group play at the Pearson Centre for Young People on Nuart Road in Beeston. Originally, the Centre had two tables but unfortunately one of them got damaged. This made play more difficult for the number of people attending the U3A’S Table Tennis Group. The centre decided they must buy a new table and Beeston U3A felt that they could contribute towards the cost. On September 8th, Beeston U3A Chair, Sue Blackley and Group Leader Janet Hoult met with John Wilson, Chairman of the Centre, to present a cheque for £100. An informal knock about ensued and all agreed that the new table performed very well, which was more than could be said for the Photo: from left to right- Janet Hoult, players! The Erewash Valley Cycling Club is launching a summer recruitment drive to mark its 35th anniversary. New members of all ages and abilities are being sought to boost numbers on the club's Wednesday and Sunday runs. "Our midweek social rides are aimed at older and retired folk who want to enjoy a gentle ride in good company," says organising secretary Malcolm Griffin. "Sunday riders have a choice of short or long runs depending on their abilities... and nobody gets left behind!" Most rides use cycle tracks, canal towpaths and quiet roads where possible, though some riding in traffic is inevitable. "We would like to see more women joining the club, particularly the Wednesday section," adds Malcolm. Details from Malcolm on (0115) 939 7060 (leave message), e.mail malcolmgriffin@talktalk.net or write to 6 Westerlands, Stapleford, Notts, NG9 7JG.

Book Review by Clare Lyons

Foxglove Summer by Ben Arronovitch

I’ve been waxing lyrical about this series for a while now, but it seems to be a marmite affair – people love them or hate them… I’m in the ‘love’ team. This is the fifth book in the series, and just as good a read as the first. The stories are based around PC Peter Grant, a normal copper in London who discovers, not only that magic is real, but that he is the next Apprentice. There is an underworld of magical elements that are policed by a specialist unit based at The Folly. This book takes Peter out of London and into the country to try and help find two missing school girls. As well as being regular mystery/crime books, the additional element of the magic and how it weaves into our non-magical lives is beautifully crafted, I especially like the department in the Fire Brigade that deal with magical ‘issues’. The books are funny and well written, with a mix of well-developed characters, some appearing throughout the series and others just for one book. Although you could read any book in isolation, it will all make much more sense if you start at the beginning with Rivers of London. Book Six isn’t due out until November, but I’ve already pre-ordered on the famous website…

Children‛s Choice

Tamara Small and the Monsters Ball by Giles Palley-Phillips This is another great collaboration between Palley-Phillips and Gabriele Antonini, the pictures are bold and strong complimenting the well paced rhyming story. Tamara Small is at first very scared to be taken (with Ted) out of her bed one night, but it turns out that the Annual Monsters Ball is in full swing and she has been invited. The Slime Cake was a special talking point in our house as we love to bake, and it inspired a green creation for Halloween.

St Michael and All Angels Church, Bramcote, Scoops Annual Fairtrade Campaign Award St Michael and All Angels Church recognised for their contribution to Fairtrade movement. St Michael and All Angels Church was presented with the Highly Commended Award at the annual Fairtrade Campaign Awards which took place at the Fairtrade Foundation’s national supporter conference in London. The group was recognised for their commitment to raising awareness about the principles and values of Fairtrade in their local community during Fairtrade Fortnight 2015, a highlighted campaign for the grassroots movement in the UK. The Highly Commended Award is given to a group that has created an integrated, wellplanned and creative campaign that reached lots of people, engaged the media, and communicated the Fairtrade message imaginatively. The St Michaels Fairtrade Team were the first to be formed in the Diocese of Southwell in Nottinghamshire. On receiving the award, Toni Thorncraft-Smith from St Michael and All Angels Church accompanied by their Fairtrade Mascot Marcel, said: ‘"When you hear how people in developing countries are exploited, you can't help but be passionately on their side - especially as we in the West have so much and get a decent reward for our labours. We want buying Fair Trade to be the norm, not the exception. That's the message we keep giving out

42

at St Michael's and that's why we're so encouraged to get this award today." “Many people here today will expect us to say that our Church has won this award as we have faith and trust in God. Well of course we do but these two things have given us courage, the courage to try. We have overstepped our former boundaries and given it all we had at the time knowing that in the future, trusting in God we will be equipped to achieve more and more in the fight for Trade Justice. Whilst we are deeply indebted to the support of the Fairtrade Foundation in all of our activities we are also greatly indebted to the work of Traidcraft and feel it an honour and privilege to have worked hand in hand with these incredible organisations to reach this place where we are today. In the words of the Great British Bake Off ‘we have entered feeling the smallest and emerged giants’. Praise God from whom all blessings flow! Ooh and if you aren’t involved with Traidcraft, come and speak to us because you should be!” Adam Gardner, Communities Campaigns Manager at the Fairtrade Foundation, said: "St Michael and All Angels Church has made an exceptional commitment to farmers and workers around the globe who are continuously working hard to bring us the products we love. All too often these communities are not receiving a fair price for their work, but campaigners from Bramcote have shown their dedication to this cause.

Please mention Grapevine when responding to advertisements.

It’s so important for communities to get involved and let their voice be heard.“Thanks to the ongoing support of campaigners and businesses around the UK, Fairtrade today reaches millions of vulnerable farmers and workers in over 70 countries. We are constantly inspired and surprised by the overwhelming support the British public shows Fairtrade. Thank you and congratulations to St Michael and All Angels Church for making an incredible contribution to the Fairtrade movement.” The one day conference in London brought together campaigners from across the UK, Fairtrade producers and experts in global development. The day featured a sneak peek into the Fairtrade Foundation’s 2016-2020 strategy, innovative and informative workshops and the launch of Fairtrade Fortnight 2016, among many other items. Fairtrade has paved the way for sustainable trading by providing a safety net for world’s poorest farmers against volatile market prices, and the Fairtrade Premium to invest in vital community, business and environmental projects. The UK has one of the most powerful networks of Fairtrade campaigners in the world, including over 600 Fairtrade Towns, 1350 Fairtrade Schools and 170 Fairtrade Universities, and 7,500 Fairtrade places of worship. For more information about Fairtrade, visit www.fairtrade.org.uk.

Help to record our Wildlife - with the Nottingham Wildlife Trust Hedgehogs are becoming quite rare these days, you can help the Nottingham Wildlife team know if you have any in your garden, you can log onto their website www.nottinghamshirewildlife.org and fill in a form for their record. In Nottinghamshire the garden mammal survey has been used by many people to report that it’s several years since they have seen a hedgehog. They usually hibernate for the winter from October onwards until about May, so you may not see them now, but you can also start helping the Wildlife trust by recording other other mammals you may see in the meantime , foxes, grey squirrels, moles, brown rats, badgers and many more. www.nottsmammals.org.uk/gardenmammals. Hedgehogs are not only harmless to us, but are also very useful to the gardener, as they eat many garden pests. Hedgehogs mainly eat beetles, caterpillars, earthworms and slugs. Many people put out a saucer of bread and milk for them, but this can be harmful as their stomachs cannot digest bread, and cow’s milk is a breeding ground for germs and can cause stomach upsets.A better choice for hedgehogs is tinned dog or cat food (not fishbased), minced meat, chopped liver, or scrambled egg. Dog biscuits, bran and peanuts “Henry” the hedghog can be used to supplement their diet and to provide roughage, but sweet foods such as chocolate and fruit should be avoided as they are bad for their teeth. Special hedgehog food is available. The most popular brand is called Spike and is available from Attenborough Nature Centre It is very important to ensure that a supply of fresh water is always available, so why not leave out a saucer of water in your garden- ( information courtesy the Nottingham Wildlife Trust) Editors Note: I was pleased to record my hedgehog on the above website , and yes I gave him the “original” name of Henry - ( but I didn’t have to record his name !) Henry had been visiting our garden most evenings until recently for food, he has now gone into hibernation. He was quite amusing to watch, he used to tip the saucer up with his two front paws to get the food to slide down near his mouth, and was a noisy eater ! See photo of Henry above.

Colour Rush raises £24.000 for Treetops.

Treetops Hospice’s first ever Colour Rush, a 5k run/walk getting covered in coloured powder, has raised £24,000 for the charity. 700 people took part in the Colour Rush event, which took place at Elvaston Castle Country Park on Sunday 13 September. Participants ran or walked a 5k route around the grounds of the park, while being showered in coloured powdered paint at several colour stations along the way. By the time they reached the finish line, the participants were covered in a kaleidoscope of colours. Hayley Banks, from Spondon, ran the 5k with two friends. She said “It really was a great day and we had so much fun – thanks to everyone at Treetops for doing such a great job of organising it, everything went really smoothly! It’s a great cause and I’m really happy to fundraise for it.” Throughout the day, local musicians and singers entertained the crowds with live music, all organised by Furthest from the Sea. Families enjoyed a wide range of activities including bouncy castles and slides, a penalty shootout, parrots, a labyrinth and funfair rides. There was a range of food stalls and, for the adults, a Prosecco bar. Michael Lees, from Oxton in Nottinghamshire, took part with his three sons, whilst his daughter volunteered by throwing red paint over participants at the second colour station. Michael said “It was a brilliant day and a fantastic cause. My family are strong supporters of hospices, because my brother passed away in one. We signed up quite late for the run, but it was a brilliant thing to do, for a fantastic cause.” The money raised will be spent providing nursing care and emotional support for people affected by life-limiting illnesses in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. Treetops Hospice fundraiser, Mary Rose, said “On behalf of everyone at Treetops Hospice, I’d like to thank all the participants, volunteers, stall-holders, musicians, and everyone else involved, for making this a very successful and really fun event.” Photos: Top -Staff from Asda stores in Long Eaton and Spondon sponsored the green colour station and had a blast throwing paint over the runners -Photo credit Lizzie Banks Middle: Hayley Banks running through the final colour station on the 5k route -Photo credit: Steve Ingers Bottom: Left to right:Sebastian Lees, Freddie Lees, Michael Lees (their father) and Roland LeesPhoto credit: Gary Murfin

Where everyone’s talking about nature! Beeston Wildlife Group, new talk season

THE GEOLOGY OF THE PLANET – A TALK BY COLIN BAGSHAW 16th November 2015, 7.30PM - 9.30PM Trent Vale Infants School, Trent Road, Beeston Rylands, Nottingham, NG9 1LP About the talk The composition of soils has a profound effect on the natural history of an area and is dependent on the rock types found at depth beneath. Geology, the study of the Earth and its rocks, therefore plays an important role in our understanding of the development of various environments. This illustrated talk will initially address the structure of the Earth and the processes which take place within it and on its surface. This will be followed by an explanation of how and when some locally occurring rock types were formed. About the speaker Colin graduated in Geology from Nottingham University in the early 1960s before embarking on a career which included teaching to groups in schools, adult education and the Open University. This involved leading field trips to many parts of Britain and abroad. Beeston Wildlife Group - Indoor meetings programme 2015- 2016 th
