Welcome to our new gardening feature! Hello Gardeners… It‛s Gardener Steve here! and I‛m bringing you gardening tips, news and events. I do hope you are all having a lovely summer and your gardens are flourishing, as I sit here and write the sun is shining after a few days of rain, it makes the plants look so fresh and healthy, I know they are in my garden. Our gardens this year what with the circumstances have become another room in the house haven’t they? For those of that have gardens they have been our lifelines. Those unfortunate not to have one our green spaces around where we live are just as good and a place to venture to and be with nature and get some fresh air. This year I have had time in my own garden as usually I am very busy jetting off to Chelsea Flower Show, Visiting Chatsworth flower show press day and helping a school with their display and also working at the NEC for Gardeners World Live so it was a busy time of the year for me, I have missed it all terribly but grateful for the other things I have had chance for.

Here are some jobs for you to do in your garden this month Happy gardening everybody! Pick runner beans regularly to prevent them becoming stringy and to make room for developing beans. Keep on top of weeds as they compete with plants for nutrients and water. Stake tall or top heavy Dahlias and Lilies to prevent wind and rain damage. Keep patio container plants well watered and feed with a liquid high potash fertiliser every fortnight. Trim your lavender plants after they’ve finished flowering to keep them compact. Continue to feed tomato plants with a tomato fertiliser and remove leaves lower down on the plant to help with air circulation and prevent disease. Dead-heading is an important job this month - bedding plants, perennials and roses to stop them self-seeding, encourage further flowering and improves appearance of plant. Apply a high-potash fertiliser such as tomato food once fruits start to form on peppers, cucumber and aubergines. Pinch out the top of tomato plants to concentrate the growth into the fruit that has already formed. Aim to leave 5 or 6 trusses of fruit per plant. Lawn growth slows down in late summer so raise the cutting height of your lawn mower to help the grass from going brown. Please mention Grapevine when responding to advertisements.
Gardener Steve’s Plant of the Month RUDBECKIA FULGIDA VAR. SULLIVANTII ‘GOLDSTRUM’ (Coneflower) Rudbeckia can be annuals, biennials or herbaceous perennials, with simple or pinnately divided leaves and large daisy-like flower-heads with yellow or orange rays surrounding a prominent conical disk. It is a plant genus in the sunflower family. The species are commonly called Coneflowers and are native to North America and many species are cultivated in gardens for their showy yellow or gold flower heads. 'Goldsturm' is an herbaceous perennial forming a clump to 60cm in height, with erect stems bearing narrowly ovate leaves and dark-eyed, deep yellow flowers to 12cm across. This award winning coneflower is mostly used in flower borders and beds, as cut flowers, cottage garden, and informal garden prairie planting. Flowering period: August to October Height and Spread: 60cm x 60cm (2ft x 2ft) Soil: Any soil but well drained Hardiness: Hardy Propagation: Propagate by division in Spring or Autumn Pruning: Deadhead faded flowers Pest and Diseases: Generally pest free
Potato challenge!
Over the years I have enjoyed growing potato’s in tubs or bags It is really quite easy and such fun. So this year I decided to set a challenge between me and my partner Michelle so we had six tubs each and for an extra experiment popped some in an old builders trug and shopping bag. Now that we are starting to harvest them as they are an early variety called Arran Pilot both of us are still talking to each other as were quite competitive!! But we are getting similar crops so all good! Look out next year when I give you all the information you need for growing potato’s especially in bags and containers. Play Areas Opening In Broxtowe. Play areas across the Borough will start opening from Monday 13th July as part of a phased opening over a two week period. All play areas, as long as they meet the necessary safety criteria, will be open by 24th July. Since Government guidance changed recently to allow play areas to re-open, the Council has been working to ensure they are safe and clean and tidy for use. Councillor Helen Skinner, Chair of the Environment and Climate Change Committee said: “We know some residents have been disappointed that the play areas haven’t already opened but we want to make sure that they have been thoroughly inspected and the areas tidied up having been unused for so long. Play areas will begin opening from 13th July, with some of the larger and most popular sites from all areas across the Borough first. All play areas will be open within two weeks of this date, provided there are no issues identified. All of the play areas will have signage installed explaining how many children are allowed on the play area at once to comply with social distancing and what guidelines we need residents to follow to keep everyone safe so that they can remain open.”
18

£562,000 to be invested in sustainable travel in Broxtowe Plans to invest £562,000 in sustainable transport across north and south Broxtowe were approved by Broxtowe Borough Council’s Finance and Resources Committee. As part of its transport-related developer contributions, a total of £636,461 is available for sustainable transport schemes in the north of the Borough and £150,547 in the south of the Borough. Projects which were given the green light include: •
•
• 26
An additional £100,000 to the Bennerley Viaduct proposal making the Borough Council’s total contribution £120,000 £385,000 for upgrades to the existing bus stop infrastructure in the vicinity of the Mushroom Farm development along the A610 corridor. This investment would offer a step-change improvement in the public transport offer in Eastwood, Newthorpe, Giltbrook, Kimberley, Nuthall, Brinsley and Watnall £45,000 for improvements to rights of way in the vicinity
• • •
£20,000 for the introduction of traffic signal controller upgrades at the Sun Inn gyratory in Eastwood £10,000 for Beeston Shopmobility to secure new premises £2,000 for wheelchair signage on Broxtowe-owned land near Beeston train station
Councillor Greg Marshall Chair of the Finance and Resources Committee, said: I’m pleased that we have been able to approve spending on these projects and invest in sustainable travel across the Borough for our future. As we move into planning the Borough’s recovery from the pandemic, we will be taking every opportunity to consider how we can invest in more sustainable communities". Councillor Helen Skinner, Chair of the Environment and Climate Change Committee said: “The pandemic has been incredibly difficult but there have been some positive benefits for the environment. Approval of funding for these projects will help us to build on these benefits and move forward with our Green Futures programme to reduce the Borough’s carbon emissions to net zero by 2027. For more information, contact Broxtowe Borough Council on: john.delaney@broxtowe.gov.uk

Good progress made on Beeston Dementia-friendly Bungalows Work is progressing well on two dementia-friendly bungalows on the site of the former Beeston market. The bungalows, on Willoughby Street were granted planning permission last year and have been specially designed to support the needs of those affected by dementia including: • Open plan living with good visual connection of spaces • Covered entrance with improved security and observation • Large entrance hall with scope to park a wheelchair • Kitchen and dining area is integrated into the living area with good natural daylight • An external charging point for a mobility scooter is available in the secure area at the back of the property • Sheltered rear space allows enjoyment and activity outside • A raised area for planting encourages outdoor activity that will maximise sunlight exposure and the manufacture of vitamin D • All rooms, apart from the visitors’ WC, offer views for light and sense of orientation. Two storage rooms offer good capacity with zoning opportunity • Detailed design will address visual clarity, appropriate colours & contrasts, ergonomic handles/ supports and a variety of visual keys • Heat pumps which are currently the most cost effective form of heating using electricity. A heat pump will help reduce fuel bills (compared to
other forms of electric heating) due to their high energy efficiency ratings when combined with the high levels of insulation and the underfloor heating system proposed. In addition the provision of 2kw photovoltaic panels per bungalow will help contribute to achieving highly energy efficient dwellings. The bungalows will also be fully wheelchair accessible and including a wheelchair compliant wet room and some lowered kitchen worktops for food preparation. “Everyone in Broxtowe should be able to live in a good quality home which meets their needs. “These new bungalows are making excellent use of a long term brownfield site and I’m really pleased that work is progressing on site so that two more families can be supported to live well with dementia,” said Councillor Teresa Cullen, Chair of Broxtowe Borough Council’s Housing Committee. Vice Chair, Councillor Barbara Carr added: “Dementia affects so many people and it can be very challenging for those affected and their families to make their homes suitable for their care. Like our existing dementia bungalows in Eastwood and Beeston, we’ve worked closely with the architects to ensure they take these needs into account and can make their home lives as easy as possible.” Broxtowe Borough Council pledged its support to people with dementia in 2014 by signing a Dementia Action Alliance Declaration to help local people ‘live well with dementia.’ For more information and support visit www.broxtowe.gov.uk/dementia

Business advice and information from Mitchell Wilde Solicitors. Many owner managed businesses have be having a hard time recently. For obvious reasons many business customers are not paying their suppliers promptly. The county court, slow at the best of times, are taking 6 or 7 weeks to process the forms required just to start a new debt claim. What can you do to get paid? The creditors who get paid are usually the ones at the front of the queue, with good control systems and without a core of old, hard to recover invoices outstanding. Use of straight forward procedures under insolvency legislation, not involving the courts, is a cost effective and quick way of applying maximum pressure on debtors who can pay but might prefer not to. 21 days later you can start winding up proceedings against the debtor company, You can use winding up petitions against a debtor company even now if you have reasonable grounds for believing COVID-19 has not had a financial effect on the company or the debt issues would have arisen anyway. The other side of the coin is that you may be having difficulty fulfilling orders from customers. In an 1863 case the defendants had agreed to permit the claimants to use a music hall to hold concerts on four specific
36
nights. After the contract was made but before the first performance night, the hall was destroyed by fire. The court held that the defendants were not liable in damages. The contract was said to have been “frustrated”. “Frustration” ends contractual obligations: it is something which happened after the contract was formed, is not anyone’s fault, and makes performance of the contract impossible, illegal or radically different from what was envisaged, and was outside anyone’s contemplation when the contract was made. The Frustrated Contracts Act was passed by Parliament in 1943. Money paid before the frustrating event can be recovered. A party who has incurred expenses is permitted, if the court thinks fit, to retain an amount up to the value of the expenses out of any money they have been paid. Plans to provide housing to ex-services personnel taking shape. Plans to provide flats for rent to ex-services personnel in Stapleford are taking shape, as part of Broxtowe Borough Council’s Housing Delivery Plan. The Council’s Housing Committee will soon receive an update on the progress. A planning application was submitted for the flats, which, if approved, will see five one bedroom homes built on the garage site between 71 and 83 Oakfield Road. This followed consultation with the local community. Chair of the Housing Committee, Councillor Teresa Cullen said: “I’m very pleased with the progress made on this important scheme so far. It’s a sad reality that ex-service personnel can face many difficulties including mental health issues, which can make it hard for them to access adequate housing. Vice-Chair, Councillor Barbara Carr added: “The Council is working with a locally based armed forces charity to ensure that should planning approval be granted, the homes will be allocated to ex-service personnel and that bespoke support is provided to the new residents.” This is just one of the schemes we are hoping to deliver as part of our Housing Delivery Plan to meet social and affordable housing need. The plan will see a minimum of 230 homes built in the Borough over the next 10 years on land which the Council owns, including brown field, under utilised and derelict sites. It also sets out plans to: • Buy back existing properties that were once Council homes. • Re-model existing under-used accommodation. • Work in partnership with local registered providers to build homes. • Deliver the Council’s own new build development. • Meeting the needs of an ageing population and those with conditions such as dementia. You can download our Housing Delivery Plan at www.broxtowe.gov.uk/strategies For more information, contact Broxtowe Borough Council on housing@broxtowe.gov.uk or visit www.broxtowe.gov.uk/housing 38

Broxtowe Pay Tribute to Our Amazing NHS Some residents and visitors may have already spotted Broxtowe Borough Council’s new installation as a tribute to the NHS.
The NHS flower bed has been created on the edge of Bramcote Hills Park, adjacent to the Sherwin Arms Traffic island. The bed is made up of white gravel to depict the NHS letters and has been surrounded with blue Ageratum bedding plants. Broxtowe's Grounds Maintenance Team with the NHS flower bed. The idea came from the Council’s Horticultural Assistant Hugh Turrell, who wanted to reinforce the profile of the NHS during these very challenging times. Councillor Helen Skinner, Chair of the Environment and Climate Change Committee says ''Broxtowe are proud to have this new installation to highlight all the great work that the NHS have been doing throughout the pandemic, and still are doing. The team have taken great pride in bringing this to life, and I hope that both our residents and visitors enjoy it as they pass through the Borough.'' Steve Woodward, Grounds Maintenance and Arboricultural Manager, along with team members Keith Harrison, Paul Diver and Dave Hicking worked together to construct the bed and letters for the logo before planting the bed. The frames for the letters were made by local metal work company Dewbar Fabrications Ltd. The installation was then planted with blue Ageratum which is just coming into flower and will complete the appearance of the distinctive logo. FREE 1st time central heating is available for Broxtowe homes through the Warm Homes Hub. Broxtowe Borough Council together with charities Nottingham Energy Partnership, Age UK Nottingham & Nottinghamshire as well as the Energy Company E.ON have joined forces to launch the £4.3m Warm Homes Hub.
The Hub is not only connecting Nottinghamshire homes to gas and installing central heating systems for free, but also it is supporting thousands of residents struggling with their health, heating, household income and energy costs as a result of the Coronavirus outbreak. Over the next two years, through the Hub, eligible homeowners and tenants will be able to improve the warmth and comfort of their home and benefit from: • - free gas connection • - free 1st time central heating • - free cavity wall/loft insulation As well as improving the energy efficiency of the homes, the switch to gas heating can see significant improvements in health, as it reduces the risk of cold related illnesses and decreases the chances of damp and mould. Even better, this offer will save residents up to £5,000 on the install costs and create further savings on energy bills. Ms P is one of the first Nottinghamshire residents who will soon receive a brandnew central heating system. To heat her
44
home, she previously relied on electric panel heaters, but as they are very expensive to run, Ms P had to keep their use to a minimum. Thanks to the Warm Homes Hub, Ms P will soon be connected to the gas network and will have a new central heating system installed. Gas is generally 3 to 4 times cheaper than electricity, so Ms P will also save up to £350 on her annual heating bill. Ms P says,“My [electric] heating system is one of the most expensive kinds, so I’m excited to have gas central heating installed”. We encourage Broxtowe residents to register their interest to be one of the first in line to get the measures installed.” Nigel Dewbery, Director of E.ON’s Obligation Delivery and Installation Services business, said of the scheme: “We’re really pleased to be working with Nottinghamshire County Council to help people across the County to improve the heating of their homes.” To further improve the energy efficiency of Broxtowe homes, eligible residents can also benefit from free cavity wall & loft insulation, and see additional savings on their energy bills. For those struggling with broken or faulty heating, who already have central heating systems in their property, the Hub also offers grants towards heating replacements and repairs for residents who may not be able to get the issue resolved. The shortterm loan of heaters is available too. The Hub also offers a range of additional support such as: • fuel and water bill discounts • food and prescription collections • food bank and fuel vouchers
Please mention Grapevine when responding to advertisements.
This is offered alongside advice to improve the energy efficiency of homes, reduce unnecessary energy consumption, and reduce bill costs. As the lock down eases, the Hub will also offer Home Energy Visits to more vulnerable residents who could benefit from practical and tailored energy advice to make sure their homes are kept warm and comfortable. Furthermore, to ease concerns for the households possibly facing unemployment due to the crisis, professional help is available to complete benefit checks and other applications for hardship funds or one-off crisis grants towards essential living expenses such as food and bills. “The Warm Homes Hub team can bring some comfort during this period of isolation and worry by providing a range of services to support people, particularly those that have to self-isolate, who are living on their own and/or on a low income. We want to reach out to as many households as possible.” Says Miranda Cumberbatch, NEP Warm Homes Hub Manager. Ms P has also received financial support from the Warm Homes Hub. She said “I got into debt with everything and I really didn’t know where to turn….thank you [Warm Homes Hub team]”. Ms P has also experienced an improvement in her wellbeing thanks to the support she has received; she told us “I suffer from anxiety, and I feel a weight has been lifted off me”.
The Warm Homes Hub project is funded by the £150m Warm Homes Fund, which has been established by National Grid, and is administered by the Community Investment Company, Affordable Warmth Solutions, to support local authorities to address some of the issues affecting fuel poor households.
Jeremy Nesbitt, Managing Director of Affordable Warmth Solutions, said: “We are excited about this investment from National Grid and are delighted to support Nottinghamshire County Council to fund the scheme to address fuel poverty across the county.” To register your interest for 1st time central heating, visit www.warmhomeshub.com/apply or call the team directly on 0115 985 3000 (Mon – Fri, 9am – 5.30pm). Covid 19 Update and Information Number of mourners allowed at funerals at Bramcote Crematorium to increase. The number of mourners allowed to attend funerals at Bramcote Crematorium will increase from 13th July following work to adapt its two chapels in line with social distancing measures. From Monday 13th July, up to 30 mourners will be permitted in the Serenity Chapel and up to 17 in the Reflection Chapel. Chair of the Bramcote Bereavement Services Joint Committee, Councillor Steve Carr said: “Broxtowe and Erewash Borough Councils have closely followed public health guidance around social distancing which unfortunately meant that the number of family and friends able to attend funerals was limited to 10. This has been very difficult for those who are grieving so I am pleased that we are now able to safely increase the numbers permitted. I’d like to give my thanks to all those families for their patience and understanding at what is already a difficult time. We will continue to monitor and review the situation in line with changing Government guidance.” Those attending funerals must continue to follow social distancing measures whilst visiting the Crematorium. Anyone who has any of the symptoms of COVID-19 or lives with someone who has the symptoms should not attend. For more information, visit www.bramcotebereavement.org

Broxtowe is no place for hate. Broxtowe Borough Council stands in support of those who are campaigning for equality. Councillor Milan Radulovic MBE, Leader of the Council said: “There is no place for racism or hate in Broxtowe or anywhere else in the world. We have been incredibly shocked by what has happened in America and it is a reminder that no one should be complacent about racism. We stand in solidarity with people of all races and backgrounds to ensure that we can eradicate racism and inequality for good. Councillor Steve Carr, Deputy Leader of the Council added: “Everyone in Broxtowe has the right to be treated fairly, with courtesy and respect and without discrimination and prejudice. We need change to be long lasting and we can only achieve this is we tackle inequality head on. Here in Broxtowe we will do just that. Leaders, both nationally and locally, should be bringing people together not driving them apart.” Last year, the Council signed a Nottinghamshire Hate Crime Pledge as part of it’s commitment to tackling hate crime. If you think you have been the victim of a hate crime, please report it via 101 or online via True Vision at www.report-it.org.uk .In an emergency always call the Police on 999.
Important Update on Beeston Markets. Broxtowe Borough Council has been informed that the current operators of the weekly market in Beeston will cease operating. The monthly farmers markets are not affected by this change. Councillor Tim Hallam, Chair of the Jobs and Economy Committee. “I was deeply saddened to learn that the current operators of Beeston Market feel that they can no longer continue. This will be very disappointing for customers, and a major blow to stall holders who depend on local markets to make a living. “We hope to offer a solution quickly, but it’s impossible to make any promises with resources already stretched to breaking-point. Local Government funding just isn’t sufficient to mitigate the damage of COVID-19.“Staff at Broxtowe Borough Council are working extremely hard to find a new operator, whilst we also investigate the viability of bringing local markets into temporary Council care.”

iTunes Gift Cards favoured by fraudsters Victims have handed over approximately £520k to fraudsters who have asked for payment using iTunes Gift Cards, since May 2016. iTunes is an online media player developed by Apple and used to organise and access music, films and TV programmes. Apple offer iTunes Gift Cards for sale which can be redeemed on the iTunes Store and various other Apple services. Over the past few months fraudsters have been tricking victims into buying iTunes Gift Cards and asking them to read out/send the serial code for payment in various types of fraud. The fraudsters don’t need the physical card to redeem the value and once the code is sent, the money is lost. There has been a total reported loss of approximately £520k since May 2016, highlighting a lack of awareness. iTunes Gift Cards used in various types of fraud Action Fraud have seen this method of payment being used in types of fraud which include; Loan Scams, fake mis-sold PPI (Payment Protection Insurance) and various banking errors. Additionally there has been a trend in fraudsters pretending to be from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) and asking for payment of debt/taxes using this method. One victim recently reported losing £46k to fraudsters who asked for payment using in iTunes Gift Cards. Here is what Apple say: “iTunes Gift Cards are solely for the purchase of goods and services on the iTunes Store and App Store. Should you receive a request for payment using iTunes Gift Cards outside of iTunes and the App Store please report it to Action Fraud”. Confusing victims with reference about Apple Pay In some cases fraudsters may refer to Apple Pay as a way to explain or legitimise this payment method. iTunes Gift Cards are not the same as Apple Pay, which is a means of making contactless payment linked to credit cards, store credit cards and rewards cards. Individuals who received an unexpected call in which the caller requests
an advance fee in the form of an iTunes gift cards (or via a Money Service Bureau) should terminate the call and report it to us. To report a fraud and receive a police crime reference number, call Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or use our online fraud reporting tool. 52

If however, you think you need leave your home, try to arrange temporary housing from the council before you leave. Not everyone leaving home due to violence is entitled to emergency accommodation. If you are a woman leaving domestic abuse, try to find a place in a women’s refuge. WAIS can help you with this. You can apply to our Housing Options Team as a homeless person if you cannot stay in your home. The council has to give you advice about finding somewhere to live. Some people are entitled to emergency accommodation. If the council has a duty to find you somewhere to live, you will be asked to provide details of your situation. You may be asked for supporting evidence, which could include details and dates of incidents. You can take a friend or an adviser with you for support. The Housing Options service confirms whatever you discuss with the service will always remain completely confidential.

HEATWAVE - Tips for coping in hot weather. Most of us welcome hot weather, but when it’s too hot for too long, there are health risks. •
• • • • • • • • • • •
look out for those who may struggle to keep themselves cool and hydrated – older people, those with underlying health conditions and those who live alone are particularly at risk stay cool indoors – many of us will need to stay safe at home this summer so know how to keep your home cool close curtains on rooms that face the sun to keep indoor spaces cooler and remember it may be cooler outdoors than indoors if going outdoors, use cool spaces considerately, keep your distance in line with social distancing guidelines follow Coronavirus social distancing guidance and wash your hands regularly drink plenty of fluids and avoid excess alcohol never leave anyone in a closed, parked vehicle, especially infants, young children or animals try to keep out of the sun between 11am to 3pm walk in the shade, apply sunscreen regularly and wear a wide brimmed hat, if you have to go out in the heat avoid exercising in the hottest parts of the day make sure you take water with you, if you are travelling if you are going into open water to cool down, take care and follow local safety advice
Remember that while Coronavirus restrictions are in place, you will need to follow government guidance to use public spaces safely. Public Health England has more tips on how to beat the heat in the Heatwave Plan for England. If you have concerns about an uncomfortably hot house that's affecting your health or someone else's, get medical advice. You can also get help from the environmental health office at your local authority. They can inspect a home for hazards to health, including excess heat.

Heat exhaustion and heatstroke Heat exhaustion is not usually serious if you can cool down within 30 minutes. If it turns into heatstroke, it needs to be treated as an emergency. Check for signs of heat exhaustion The signs of heat exhaustion include: • a headache • dizziness and confusion • loss of appetite and feeling sick • excessive sweating and pale, clammy skin • cramps in the arms, legs and stomach • fast breathing or pulse • temperature of 38C or above • being very thirsty • The symptoms are often the same in adults and children, although children may become floppy and sleepy. If someone is showing signs of heat exhaustion, they need to be cooled down. Things you can do to cool someone down. If someone has heat exhaustion, follow these steps: • Move them to a cool place. • Get them to lie down and raise their feet slightly. • Get them to drink plenty of water. Sports or rehydration drinks are OK. • Cool their skin – spray or sponge them with cool water and fan them. • Cold packs around the armpits or neck are good, too. • Stay with them until they're better. They should start to cool down and feel better within 30 minutes. Immediate action required: feeling unwell after 30 minutes of resting in a cool place and drinking plenty of water. CALL 999 • not sweating even though too hot • a temperature of 40C or above • fast breathing or shortness of breath • feeling confused • a fit (seizure) • loss of consciousness • not responsive Heatstroke can be very serious if not treated quickly. Put the person in the recovery position if they lose consciousness while you’re waiting for help. To advertise call 07854990608 or visit our website www.beechpublications.co.uk

A monthly update from Ilkeston Start For Hens. Hens make AMAZING pets. Did you know that? No biting, scratching from them. No need to house train - actually I know a few besotted hen owners who allow their girls in the house, in which case poo picking is required as house training is a total no no. A few too many boundaries pushed there I think! Anyway, as said, they make amazing pets. Love their owners unconditionally and lay lovely fresh eggs to boot. So, carrying on from last month..... Volunteers are on the farm at crack of dawn, the farmer wants the girls out ASAP, so they can clean the barn/cages and get new stock in immediately 3500-4000 girls, saved from slaughter and heading for forever homes, here we go.... Our roles CATCHERS. Pretty obvious. Catching hens from the barn or cages. As quickly and calmly as possible. The work is hot and dusty, even with face masks on it catches the breath. Runners have to take regular breaks as conditions really are horrible. Poor hen, living in this atmosphere for over 12 months. Catchers pass the hens to RUNNERS, they carry the hens to the CRATE MANAGER, calling out how many hens are being carried. Crate managers direct runners to crates, exactly 10 chooks per crate. CRATE LOADERS (always 2 to a crate) then carry their cargo to a waiting van. Heavy work if you think in terms of hundreds of crates. All volunteers, every one of us. Done for the love of these delightful characters. To be continued... Please like and share Ilkeston Fresh Start for Hens on Facebook or ring Dee on 07946 653173 58

Your Beeston Your Future
#Beeston2020Vision
Do you have 2020Vision? What does the next decade have in store for you and for your town? Help to create a conversation about the future of Beeston. In this uncertain crisis, we have come together as a community to support one another and our front line workers. It is a time for reflection. What better moment to think about how meeting our changing needs over the next ten years can make Beeston a better place in which to live, work and play? We are looking for your creative ideas between 250 and 400 words - your thoughts for encouraging an online conversation in advance of an open discussion. We would particularly like to hear from young people.
What will happen with your ideas? Ideas will feed into a free open event aimed at setting an agenda for Beeston over the next ten years. #Beeston2020Vision is expected to take place in the Pearson Centre for Young People at 7.00pm on Friday 25 September 2020, chaired by Professor Sir Martyn Poliakoff. Let us know if you would like to attend. We need new ideas that spark a conversation don’t worry too much about the expression – you don’t need to be a professional writer. Your vision will be published on a dedicated webpage and shared across social media to encourage further debate and stimulate other suggestions. Please make sure that you are comfortable with that.
It is YOUR BEESTON, YOUR FUTURE! beeston2020vision@gmail.com

NATIONAL TRUST NOTTINGHAM CENTRE 2020 - 2021 Winter Meetings September seems a long way off as we come to terms with social distancing and restrictions on our daily lives. Something to look forward to when we can meet again is our Winter Programme of talks. The programme runs twice a month from September to April. Each talk lasts for an hour with a variety of subjects and speakers. The year starts with "British Garden Birds"; later in the year, "Gardens Great and Small" and "Japan's Wildlife". History buffs may enjoy "Cuba and Panama"; Independence, Revolution and Pirates", or "Inn Signs and Local History". Our Christmas will be "Scottish Dancing and Ceilidh", and, of course, two National Trust property talks will be included, "The Museum of Childhood, Sudbury" and "Power, Positions and Gardens; Stowe, Biddulph and Nymans". If restrictions are relaxed, we hope to run some minibus walks for small groups from August onwards. Provisional dates are as follows: Wednesday 5 August: Harringworth to Fineshade (Rockingham Forest) Thursday 20 August: Brassington to Tissington (Peak District) Thursday 17 September: Deep Hayes to Froghall (Churnet Valley) Thursday 1 October: Belton-in-Rutland to Egleton (Rutland) Wednesday, 14 October: Wetton Mill to Ilam Park (Peak District) On a wider scale, although National Trust properties and gardens remain closed, with the exception of Coast and Countryside car parks, where the advice is to book, there are lots of very interesting articles on their website, one in particular "The Art of Illusion" which covers many of the illusions within stately homes. You will need to be a member of the National Trust to join the Nottingham Centre and you will need to be a member of both to attend our other activities. Our programmes and newsletters keep you informed of what is happening. It costs £6 per person per annum to join and £10 for 2 people living at the same address. The talks cost £3 per person and £4 for guests. Our Web site is: www.ntnottingham.uk Our Membership Secretary is Barbara McDonald
