Nottinghamshire Police warn local residents in the community to be vigilant following incidents of distraction burglarys
There has been reports locally following an incdent where a man entered a house and stole money from an 89 year old woman. The man claiming he had no electricity and needed some money he said his wife went out and took their bank card with her. The vulnerable woman went upstairs to get her purse, and on her return the man had entered her house uninvited. The victim opened her purse to give him £10 and the offender reached in and took £20 from her. Detectives investigating the incident have reminded the public of their rights when it comes to unexpected callers. The Nottinghamshire Poice have warned the community to be extra vigilant. They are asking that people share advice with their potentially vulnerable neighbours, friends and family. Distraction burglars are opportunists who may pose as a trustworthy individual in order to gain access to your home., they can be very deceptive and convincing.“With more people feeling isolated and alone, distraction burglars may see this as an opportunity to target people. 10
“If you know someone who could benefit from this advice who is not on social media, please call them and make them aware of these tips”. The best practice is to follow these simple steps in order to establish whether or not someone is genuine: LOCK - Keep your front and back doors locked even when you are at home. STOP - Before you answer, stop and think whether you are expecting anyone. Check you have locked the back door and taken the key out. Look through a spy hole or window to see who the caller is.
Please mention Grapevine when responding to advertisements.
CHAIN - If you decide to open the door, put the chain or door bar on first, if you have one. Keep the chain or bar on while you are talking to the caller. With PVC doors, it can be difficult and costly to fit a door chain, consider fitting a Secure Ring instead.
FIRE SAFETY - Only put on your door chain as you answer the door, don’t keep it on all the time as this could delay your exit in case of fire. CHECK - Look at their clothing. Some official callers will have a uniform bearing their organisation name or logo. Even if the caller has a pre-arranged appointment with you, check their identification card carefully. Close the door while you do this. If you are still unsure, call the company concerned to verify their representative’s identity. If you’re still not sure ask the caller to come back later when someone is with you. What should I do if I get an unexpected doorstep caller? You should only let someone in to your home if you’re absolutely sure that they’re genuine and you want them in your home. You don’t need to open the door for them and don’t feel embarrassed about turning them away. Be wary of bogus callers who try and trick their way in to your home by pretending to be a meter reader, police officer, council official, or an ordinary person needing help. You can ask the person to come back another time when someone you trust will be with you. If you’re worried about a doorstep caller, dial 999 and ask for the police.

Nottinghamshire County Council joins with NEP and E.ON to launch Green Homes Grant Nottinghamshire. Nottinghamshire County Council has joined forces with Nottingham Energy Partnership (NEP) and E.ON to launch the Green Homes Grant Nottinghamshire. Through this project, Nottinghamshire residents who: • Are a homeowner or landlord*, and • Have a combined gross household income of under £30,000, and • Have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) of D,E,F or G • Could be eligible for a range of free home improvement measures. These include low-carbon heating systems such as air source heat pumps and solar power to generate hot water and electricity. Solid wall, cavity wall and loft insulation measures, which have the quickest and biggest impact on energy conservation, are also covered by the grant. The scheme offers smaller measures such as replacement doors, and smart heating controls for your new system too. Reg Adair, Deputy Leader of Nottinghamshire County Council commented on the scheme, saying: “The Green Homes Grant Nottinghamshire is a fantastic new scheme helping households across the County to improve the quality of their home’s heating and energy efficiency. This scheme is particularly exciting as it offers fully funded heating and insulation measures for low income households which previously were not covered by any Government grant. I would encourage residents to get in touch as soon as possible to benefit from these measures.” NEP Programme Manager, Dr Mark Kirkwood added: “As a fuel poverty charity, it is important to us that Nottinghamshire residents, particularly those classed as vulnerable, are able to access home improvements through a more streamlined and hassle-free process. And as
14
a climate change charity, it’s also fantastic for us to be able to offer low carbon heating solutions for these households” Residents can get in touch with us to check their eligibility and chat quickly and easily through the measures of interest. If they are eligible, the Green Homes Grant Nottinghamshire team will organise a home visit and the installation of the measures, at absolutely no cost to the client.Understandably there is an increased financial pressure on many residents with people spending significantly more time indoors. By ensuring that homes are more energy efficient, NEP hopes to make energy bills more affordable for all clients. We can also support residents even further with our range of financial and wellbeing support services. Nigel Dewbery, Director of Obligation Delivery and Installation Services at E.ON, said: “We’re really pleased to be working with Nottinghamshire County Council and NEP to give eligible residents the opportunity to install a range of energy efficiency measures on their properties. This demonstrates E.ON's commitment to helping improve the energy efficiency of housing across the UK and reducing individual homeowners' impact on the environment, all helping to support our net-zero targets.” To register your interest for the Green Homes Grant Nottinghamshire project, apply at www.nottenergy.com/green-homesgrant-notts or call the team directly on 0115 947 2207 (Mon – Fri, 9am – 5.30pm).
Find out about other services Nottingham Energy Partnership offers at www.nottenergy.com * Please note that landlords can only benefit from partially funded improvements.

GRAPEVINE COMPETITION WIN 2 TICKETS TO see MCFLY plus guests 3RD SEPTEMBER 2021 TRENTHAM - STAFFORDSHIRE TRENTHAM LIVE 2021 announces three great events set over one weekend featuring a stellar line-up of artists. From Friday 3rd September through to Sunday 5th September 2021, Staffordshire’s Trentham Estate will welcome some of the world’s biggest music stars, to their new music event Trentham Live! Headliners for next year’s September weekend include pop legends McFLY who will launch the first of the weekend’s events on the Friday night. McFly said “We are delighted to be the first headliner of Trentham Live on the 3 September next year. We are told that musical greats such as The Rolling Stones and The Beatles played at The Trentham Estate in the past, so we’re in very good company. We can’t wait to see our fans there and perform live for them again after such a strange year”. Joining McFly will be special guests including TikTok star and singer Chloe Rose. Saturday 4th September sees band THE VAMPS joining the line-up. “We can barely contain our excitement at the thought of being able to play a show, outside, with you all, next summer. Trentham Live we're coming for you and it's gonna be a party. We'll see you there”. Also playing alongside The Vamps include X Factor winners Rak Su and Amy Jo (Hollyoaks). Completing the 3-day event line-up is classical legend ALFIE BOE who commented “I am absolutely thrilled to be headlining Trentham Live on 5th September 2021! I can’t wait to be performing outdoors in a beautiful setting at The Trentham Estate, seeing and singing along with my fans (in the flesh, finally!) I’ll also be sharing new material by then so this will be exciting for so many reasons, particularly after the crazy year we have all had”.
26
Please mention Grapevine when responding to advertisements.
Supporting Alfie Boe on the final evening will be the fabulous musical theatre act Collabro, who added “How exciting that we get to perform at Trentham Live next year and to be on the bill with such wonderful artists! We can’t wait to get out and perform again after the year that 2020 has been, and we’ve got so much to show everyone!”. Joining both Alfie Boe and Collabro will be Britain’s Got Talent winner Jai McDowall. A spokesperson for the Trentham Estate, said, “We’re excited and looking forward to bringing stars, international and homegrown, such as McFly, The Vamps and classical legend Alfie Boe to Trentham next year. It will be an unmissable weekend of incredible live music and entertainment for all ages”. For more information on Trentham Live 2021, go to – www.ticketmaster.co.uk/trentham-live
McFly Tom Fletcher and Danny Jones initially met while auditioning for the boyband V and later worked together while writing songs for Busted. Both talented guitarists and vocalists, the pair decided to form their own band in 2003. Named McFly after Michael J. Fox’s time-travelling hero in the Back To The Future films, they became a quartet after recruiting Dougie Poynter on bass guitar and Harry Judd on drums. Their debut album, Room On The Third Floor, was released in 2004 and went right to the top of the UK albums chart, making McFly the youngest band ever to achieve a No.1 album. In addition to two
No.1 singles, Five Colours In Her Hair and Obviously, the record also yielded two more top five hits, That Girl and Room On The Third Floor. McFly won the 2005 Brit Award for Best British Pop Act followed by the charity record All About You, which was also a No.1 hit. That same year saw the release of Wonderland, another No.1 album that was supported by the Wonderland Tour 2005 live DVD. In 2006, McFly played themselves in the Lindsay Lohan film Just My Luck before releasing their next album, Motion In The Ocean, which peaked at No.7 on the UK albums chart. The following year the band delivered a greatest hits album which reached No.4 in the UK and boasted the top 5 hit The Heart Never Lies. In 2008, McFly parted with Island, their long-time record label, and released Radioactive on their own label, Super. After touring on and off for the next 18 months, McFly re-signed to Island and released their fifth studio album, 2010’s Above The Noise. Single Shine A Light, featuring Taio Cruz, reached No.4 on the UK singles chart. After a second greatest hits compilation Memory Lane: The Best Of McFly in 2012, the band took a break. In 2013, Fletcher, Jones, Poynter and Judd teamed up with Busted members Matt Willis and James Bourne to form the supergroup McBusted and released a self-titled studio album and the single Get Over It before disbanding in early 2016.The original McFly quartet ended their musical hiatus in summer 2016 by heading out on tour. In 2019, McFly reunited for a one-off performance at The O2 in London, after releasing The Lost Songs, a series of demo tracks

originally intended for their sixth studio album. Following the success of that show, the band announced an arena tour. Originally planned for spring 2020, the dates were rescheduled to May 2021. Having signed their first record deal since 2009 with BMG, McFly recently released their first single in seven years, ‘Happiness’. The infectious new track introduces a “festival vibe” to McFly’s classic pop-rock sound and was A listed at Radio 2. When they were busy becoming one of the most successful chart acts of their era, racking up 19 top ten hits including seven number ones in just under a decade, McFly were known for being a rock-solid musical unit. A line they’d say in interviews – “It’s not always easy, but McFly’s here forever” – became embraced by fans as a kind of unofficial band mantra.
Now McFly have spent 2020 recording a new album that sounds “naturally and quintessentially us”. As they prepare for their exciting next chapter, McFly remain hungry and ambitious – clearly they haven’t racked up seven gold and platinum albums over the years without putting in some hard graft. But at the same time, they know precisely where their priorities lie going forward. “We want as many people as possible to hear our new music and when we can, we want to go out and play for our fans,” Judd says. “But for us, nothing will ever beat being able to hang out with your mates and make amazing music that you love. For us, that’s what McFly is always going to be about.” Website – https://www.mcfly.com/ Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/mcfly/ Twitter – https://twitter.com/mcflymusic Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/ mcflymusic/

Broccoli and Salmon with Tagliatelle
Serves 4 Easy recipe- takes about 15 minutes to make. Broccoli is a superfood, containing nearly every vitamin and mineral in it , and it also contains antioxidants that helps to reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease. It also contains and an array of B vitamins necessary for health and Folic Acid. Broccoli also contains high levels of both calcium and vitamin K, both of which are important for bone health and prevention of osteoporosis.Try various ways to include not only broccoli, but any dark green vegetable to the meals you prepare. Ingredients 200g broccoli 350g (12oz) tagliatelle (or spagetti) 225g (8oz) skinless and boneless salmon fillets 150ml (¼ pt) dry white wine or stock (vegetable stock can be used 25g (1oz) butter 4 spring onions, finely sliced 300ml (½ pt) single cream (as an alternative use low fat creme fresh) Chopped fresh dill to garnish, (optional) Salt and freshly ground black pepper Method Cook the tagliatelle in a large pan of boiling salted water for 8-10 mins or until just tender or ‘al dente’. Drain in a colander. Whilst the pasta cooks, place the salmon in a medium frying pan, add the white wine and salt and pepper. Cover, bring to the boil, then simmer for 5-6 mins or until the salmon is just cooked and flakes easily. Transfer the salmon to a plate and break into large flakes with a fork. Increase the heat and simmer the cooking liquid until it is reduced to about 45ml (3tbsp). Meanwhile, wash and prepare the broccoli by trimming the base of each spear and chopping the remaining into 3cm pieces. Add the butter to the reduced wine, then add the spring onions and broccoli and sauté for 3 mins. Add the cream, cover and simmer for 3-4 mins or until the broccoli is tender. Remove the lid, gently stir in the salmon and season to taste. Add the sauce to the cooked tagliatelle, then toss until coated in the sauce. Sprinkle small amount of dill if required . Serve. Garlic bread or flatbread as a side.

A walk-through testing site for COVID-19 is now operating in Beeston Albion Street car park in Beeston has been selected for a Local Testing Site (LTS) by local public health leaders because it is well known, easy to find, and is a fairly large, level space. The LTS will be open seven days a week from 8am to 8pm and is available for people with COVID-19 symptoms who have booked an appointment by calling 119 or visiting gov.uk/get-coronavirustest (Opens in a New Window). The site is run by the Department for Health and Social Care but tests at the site will be self-administered by those who request them. Parents will carry out tests on their children if they cannot manage to do their own.If you have symptoms of coronavirus you should get tested. Leader of Broxtowe Borough Council, Councillor Milan Radulovic MBE said: " We’re working with partners to do all we can to stop the spread of the virus. This site will enable Broxtowe residents with symptoms to access a local facility to help reduce transmission rates in the area. "The LTS may create some traffic around the area and unless you are getting at test we advise you to use one of the other council car parks nearby.
36
"We understand this may cause some inconvenience but I know that our local residents and businesses will support this important local testing site to help us reduce the number of COVID-19 cases in our Borough as quickly as possible. To use the site, people should: - Have at least one symptom of COVID-19 - a new, continuous cough, a high temperature or loss or change to their sense of smell or taste - Book a test first before going to the site by calling 119 or visiting gov.uk/get-coronavirus-test - Walk to the site and if driving, park up nearby and then walk to the site - Avoid taking public transport to get to the site or return home - Stay out of any shops or other premises prior to their test and return home immediately afterwards - Wear a face covering - Adhere to social distancing - Take a form of identification, such as a driving licence, passport, NHS card or utilities bill Broxtowe Borough Council will be working with partners to ensure that the site is managed and signposted to help direct users.

Funding is Approved for new Play Facility in Beeston. Local residents living in and around Beeston are set to get brand new, state of the art play area facilities thanks to a £73,440 grant from funding body FCC Communities Foundation. Adding in a contribution of £5,000 from United Living (the Councils’ Housing Construction Partner) and the Borough Council’s own funds (which have been approved for refurbishment of the play area as part of the Broxtowe Borough Council “Pride in Parks” initiative), the park is set to get a £120,000 revamp in total. The grant, awarded by FCC Communities Foundation, will be used to completely refurbish the play area at Dovecote Lane Recreation Ground in Beeston with modern, exciting equipment, all set on a rubber safer surface making the area more accessible and available for play throughout the year. Wooden playground tower with slide and climbing net and ladders and steps in a park area on a sunny day with blue sky and cloudsWooden playground tower with slide and climbing net and ladders and steps in a park area on a sunny day with blue sky and clouds Councillor Helen Skinner, Chair of the Council’s Climate Change Committee believes the facility will make a big difference to the lives of people living in the area. Cllr Skinner said: “This project will provide a real boost to the community in Beeston, giving them a lovely refreshed space to enjoy playing outside. Thank you to the FCC

Communities Foundation who has awarded us funding to add to funding we are providing as well. We’re really looking forward to seeing our play area taking shape spring next year, in time for hopefully some good weather”. FCC Communities Foundation is a not-for-profit business that awards grants for community projects from funds donated by FCC Environment through the Landfill Communities Fund. Cheryl Raynor, FCC Communities Foundation Local Grant Manager said: “We are delighted to be supporting Broxtowe Borough Council to bring this project to fruition. This is an important facility for local people in Beeston, and we look forward to work starting shortly”. For more information about FCC Communities Foundation funding contact Cheryl Raynor at cheryl.raynor@ fcccommunitiesfoundation.org.uk or visit http://www.fcccommunitiesfoundation. org.uk Councillor Skinner added: “The play area has been designed to incorporate play equipment and features that were asked for through extensive consultation with local people in summer 2020. A zip line will add excitement and a large wooden fort will provide for more imaginative play, plus, we have chosen recycled materials where possible and safe to do so, making sure this park refurbishment is as environmentallyfriendly as it can be”. wood, concrete and steel from the old play area will be taken away for recycling. The redundant bark surface will be reused as a mulch and soil improver and all the earth from digging the new area will be kept on site and landscaped. In order to fill the old bark area, 300 tonnes of recycled stone from local demolition works will be used. The majority of the play equipment is made from recyclable materials and the main unit will be made from Robinia wood, a very durable hardwood grown sustainably in Europe. Even the rubber surface is 70% recycled material, with the area using around 30 tonnes of old car tyres (which is 3,000 old tyres recycled in total). Broxtowe Borough Council are very proud of their parks. With 51% of green space being Local Nature Reserves and many play areas, recreation grounds, and open spaces throughout the Borough, there are plenty of places to enjoy the great outdoors. Broxtowe Borough Council wants residents to enjoy the beautiful green spaces and they work hard to keep them looking good, working well and thriving hand-in-hand with local wildlife. There are 44 parks and open spaces in the Borough in total, some with playgrounds, open green spaces, walkways, planting and places to sit and enjoy nature. FCC Communities Foundation is a notfor-profit business that awards grants for community, conservation and heritage projects from funds donated by
FCC Environment through the Landfill Communities Fund and Scottish Landfill Communities Fund. Since 1998, FCC Communities Foundation has granted over £200m to more than 7,000 projects which benefit people living within 10 miles of a FCC Environment landfill site. Lemon Muffins makes 12 Ingredients 275g/9¾oz plain flour 225g/8oz caster sugar 50g/1¾oz ground almonds 2 unwaxed lemons, finely grated zest plus 2 tbsp juice 2 tsp baking powder 150ml/¼ pint semi-skimmed milk 100g/3½oz unsalted butter, melted 50ml/2fl oz sunflower or vegetable oil ½ tsp vanilla extract 2 large free-range eggs For the glaze 4 tbsp lemon juice 50g/1¾oz golden caster sugar
Method Preheat the oven to 200C/180C Fan/ Gas 6 and line a 12-hole muffin tin with large paper cases. Put the flour, sugar, almonds, baking powder and lemon zest in a large mixing bowl and mix well. Beat together the milk, butter, oil, eggs, vanilla and lemon juice in a jug. Pour over the dry ingredients and mix together very sparingly until the dry ingredients are just wet. (be careful to not overmix as this will make the muffins tough). Divide the mixture between the cases – they should be about three-quarters full. Bake for 15–18 minutes until a skewer comes out clean when poked into the middle of a muffin in the centre of the tin.Use a cocktail stick or skewer to poke holes in each muffin. Combine the glaze ingredients straight away, then use a pastry brush or a teaspoon to cover the tops of the muffins. Repeat until all the glaze has been used. *You can use a small amount of icing sugar to swirl over the top(Optional) Place the muffins onto a wire rack to cool a little, delicious eaten warm or at room temperature.

Look out for your neighbours People in Broxtowe are being encouraged to keep looking out for their neighbours as the winter nights draw in. Residents in Broxtowe went out of their way to look out for their friends, family and neighbours whilst we were all in lockdown. Sparing five minutes of your time and being considerate at home could make the world of difference to your neighbours.
garden or on balconies can disrupt others around you. Avoid bonfires - Coronavirus is known to cause serious respiratory problems, which could be made much worse with exposure to smoke from bonfires. Be a little more tolerant - With more of us staying at home, there will be more noise from children playing in the garden, or neighbours using this time to do some DIY. Try to be more tolerant of them.
Say hello - If you haven’t seen your neighbours in a while, or you know that they live alone, please find a way to say hello. Just talking can make a huge difference to how you and others feel and you might be able to easily help them with something that they’ve been struggling with. Even knowing someone cares can mean a lot. Make sure you follow all social distancing guidelines.
Clean up after yourself - If you’ve been in a communal area, or taken your daily walk, please take any litter home with you. Don’t dump bulky waste - Please be considerate to your neighbours and don’t leave dumped items for others to clear up. Dumped items cause a health and safety risk for you and your neighbours, especially at this time.
Offer help if you can – Some of us are able to get out and about again but others may be feeling anxious about going outside, which could leave them feeling lonely and isolated. Some people need support with simple tasks, like shopping or collecting medicines. Others might want help to get online to order something to make their life easier. Make sure you follow all COVID-19 guidelines when offering help.
Share information – Not everyone is online and not everyone follows the Council’s updates. We’re working with partners to get important messages to them in other ways but please help us by sharing our updates about the changing COVID-19 situation with people you know who may not have seen them. WhatsApp groups, emails, re-sharing on social media or telling a neighbour who isn’t online are all great ways to help get information to everyone in our community. GRAPEVINE COMPETITION WIN A CD! “SONGS FOR GENTLE SOULS” BY THE FAR NORTH Following on from the success of their debut single "This House Is Ours" and their 2nd single ‘Runway’ released in October, UK based Americana duo The Far North announced the release of their debut album ‘Songs For Gentle Souls’ on Friday 20th November, through Red Lantern Records. "Runaway" their 2nd single is described by The Far North singer/songwriter Lee Wylding as "A little vignette about leaving the past behind and starting fresh with the ones you love". Lee continues "It's written in the vein of a 70's road movie, via early Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young". The Far North formed in 2019 as Lee Wylding (Vocals/Guitar) and Andie Packer (Drums). The band's ethos is "To go back to a traditional way of crafting songs, where every lyric is wrought out, every drum beat and guitar line is played from the heart. In turn making the songs meaningful and of value. We wanted to make an album which can be played in full at once, rather than just cherry picking the best songs and releasing 10 singles. This approach isn't something at the forefront of popular music in 2020." To realise this vision The Far North hired revered UK producer Nigel Stonier, who is famed for his work with such luminaries as Lindisfarne, Joan Baez, Robert Plant and Martha Wainwright. Recorded at Manchester's Airtight Studios, their debut album "Songs For Gentle Souls" will be released through Red Lantern Records on November 20th 2020. They were additionally supported on this journey by The Analog Music Fund.

The NHS vaccination programme is underway in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire as part of the national roll out. Vaccinations started in the county on 8th December in Nottingham University Hospitals and Sherwood Forest Hospitals who are vaccinating those aged 80 and over, as well as care home workers and front-line staff at risk, identified as priority groups for the life-saving vaccine. The NHS will contact people in the priority groups when it is their turn to receive the vaccine. The vaccine roll-out is initially being co-ordinated by Hospital Hubs who are calling forward patients who meet the criteria based on the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation’s recommendations. It is expected that vaccination centres and local vaccination services within the community will launch in the coming weeks once the sites have been approved and meet the safety criteria.
“We have been working closely as a system to roll out this programme of work over the last few months as part of a huge national effort to protect our patients against the virus. I would urge the public to come forward when they are called up for the vaccine and to make sure they attend their appointments. Please do not contact your GP for a vaccine; you will be contacted by the NHS when it is your turn.” The public have an important part to play: •
Please don’t contact the NHS to seek a vaccine, we will contact you; • when we do contact you, please attend your booked appointments; and • please continue to follow all the guidance to control the virus and save lives. For more information about the Covid-19 vaccine please visit: https://nottsccg.nhs.uk/covid-19/covid19-vaccination-in-nottingham-andnottinghamshire/
Amanda Sullivan, Accountable Officer, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire CCG, said: “Healthcare professionals in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire have been working tirelessly over the last 10 months to care for the public and keep them safe throughout the pandemic. “Now, as the roll out of the vaccination programme is underway, these healthcare professionals are continuing to care for the public to vaccinate us and keep us safe.

Call on government to spurn HS2 ‘station on the cheap’ and commit to levelling-up East Midlands. Political and business leaders from across the East Midlands have reacted angrily to proposals suggesting the region’s HS2 connection to Birmingham and the North could be drastically scaled back. The National Infrastructure Commission’s Rail Needs Assessment Plan comes ahead of the Government’s announcements about how and where it will fund major rail investments aimed at helping the UK recover from Covid-19 and create jobs across the country. Regional leaders in the Midlands and the North have spent the past five years developing detailed plans which use HS2’s arrival at Toton and Chesterfield as the centrepiece of a joined-up economic growth strategy which would create thousands of jobs and transform rail connections between the East Midlands, Birmingham, Leeds, the North East and Scotland. But the NIC has tabled ideas which include a proposal for the HS2 line to terminate at East Midlands Parkway – a location dismissed as unworkable by feasibility studies – and put passengers back on to the old network if they want to travel further north. Despite indicating that future rail connectivity could be scaled down in the Midlands, the NIC’s report appears to assume that the second stage of Crossrail in London - previously estimated to cost £27 billion - should go ahead. Government will take the final decision on which option to choose in the East Midlands, with political and business
50
leaders in the region now doubling down on their demands that it honours its commitment to build the station at Toton and deliver HS2 East in full. Councillor Kay Cutts MBE, the Leader of Nottinghamshire County Council and Chair of the HS2 East Midlands Board, said: “What the NIC is suggesting amounts to far more than just a change in station location. It is a fundamental scaling back of HS2 in the Midlands and Yorkshire. Parkway is in the middle of nowhere and was dismissed by feasibility studies for sound reasons: it is little-used, increases station costs, and returns less to the economy. It also reduces transport connections to our communities, to the rest of the Midlands and up into the North. No assessment of an historic investment in infrastructure should ignore the needs of a region now nor the prosperity of its people in the future. Yet we fear the NIC’s focus on upfront cost does just that." “A clear understanding of the East Midlands economy would tell you that moving HS2 to Parkway is a poor deal for the region, and poor value for UK taxpayers. We have spent years talking, planning and carrying out feasibility studies. In the wake of Covid, people want to see us get on and deliver. Levelling-up should mean that the East Midlands is no longer going to be treated like the poor relation. So let’s see a positive decision from Government to build Toton and deliver HS2 East in full.”

The already-agreed HS2 Hub Station at Toton would be integrated with major development proposals for Toton and Chetwynd, which include the delivery of thousands of new homes, a ‘Garden of Innovation’ intended to attract knowledge-related jobs, and a detailed connectivity strategy which links more people to employment and opportunities. Councillor Milan Radulovic, Leader of Broxtowe Borough Council has said: “This news is massively disappointing and frustrating for us. Having fought for years for Toton to be the hub station site, supported by East Midlands authorities, the Midlands Engine and Midlands Connect organisations, this scaling back would tear away the hard work and analysis that has told us that Toton is the best location for the station." "Direct connectivity between HS2 and the conventional rail network at Parkway would be impractical because of the differences in vertical and horizontal alignment between the lines (removing the option for direct Leicester to Leeds services for example). Parkway is remote from centres of population and the region’s largest rail market - the Nottingham area. The existing parkway station has consistently failed to meet its original patronage targets since it opened in 2009. The station would be difficult to serve by public transport (previous attempts to run scheduled bus services to EMP proved uneconomic). Plus, the scale of local flood risk reduces opportunities for adjacent development and would lead to greater pressure on Greenbelt sites elsewhere in Rushcliffe." "Casting yet another shroud of uncertainty over Toton is so unwelcome, particularly
now, and, if Government policy changes to adopt this recommendation there will be huge adverse consequences for our area. The impact of this scale back would be enormous. Instead of being the centre of an exciting project to generate thousands of extra jobs and homes, our area will struggle to generate the much needed investment and financing it requires to achieve the ambitious goals we have worked for years to develop. The business case for investment in the area will have been shot to bits. Indeed, the business case for the whole of the HS2 extension will have been fatally undermined." "The Government’s ‘levelling up’ agenda will be exposed to have been a hollow sham. If the station ends up being at Parkway, the prospects for a transformative regeneration project at Toton which can connect up with areas in the North of Broxtowe and beyond to Amber Valley and the North will be destroyed. There will be no delivery of jobs and growth on the scale of what has originally envisaged. Once again our area will be left behind, with all the investment going to the already more prosperous south. We are constantly overlooked for funding investment and as a result child poverty, lack of social mobility, underachievement and low wages are intractable features that affect the lives of many of our people.” It has also been built into proposals for an East Midlands Development Corporation, launched earlier this year by Midlands Engine Chairman Sir John Peace as an ambitious bid to transform the regional economy through the efficient delivery of a series of major, large-scale developments. East Midlands Parkway was built as an interim stop on

Care and Support at Home – Apps for everyday Life. In previous articles I have mentioned how technology is playing an important role in helping us support people in their own homes. Although not suitable for everyone some of this technology can help with day to day challenges and provide reassurance to individuals, CAREGivers and relatives. Home Instead have now partnered with an organisation called ORCHA that has been specifically set up to review, evaluate and approve health and social care Apps. Their role is also to ensure that users receive information that is accurate and in line with governing body regulations as well as WHO. ORCHA already work very closely with the NHS and a number of county councils. The apps cover a range of needs, from nutrition and exercise to those guiding you on managing age-related conditions. Today, there are thousands of apps available and no regulations around them. This can make it hard to find ones which are safe, effective and easy to use. ORCHA can help make this process smoother and easier to navigate around. I have looked through the library of apps and wanted to share some which I believe will be of interest to you, family or people you care for. 54
MyCognition Home MyCognition Home is an NHS brain training app for the entire family to help them think faster, focus better, and improve decision-making and memory. You start off by doing a 15-minute test called MyCQ and the score from the test is used to create a personalised training programme to help improve your performance in some of these areas. You're encouraged to spend 15 minutes a day using the app's brain training games. These games are complemented by a suite of general health resources to help you eat more healthily, be more active and sleep better. DST – Dementia Screening Test This is the only dementia test which is recognized as a medical device by relevant Health Authorities. The DST very effectively detects early dementia stages, and can reliably distinguish between the different dementia severity levels. With dementia, effective and early screening is essential. The test is easy to perform and reliable with 96% sensitivity proven in clinical trials. Mayor of Broxtowe helps to plant trees. Recently the Mayor of Broxtowe, Councillor Janet Patrick, joined the Parks and Green Spaces team to plant trees at Bramcote Hills Park. The trees chosen were Betula utilis jacquemontii, a variety of Silver Birch with very vivid white stems that are striking and stand out from a distance. The trees will be under planted with Bluebells to create a blue and white effect linking to the NHS colours. The 30 trees are planted 2m apart from each other in a grid layout, to mark the importance this distance has had in 2020. Following COVID-secure safety measures at all times, the Mayor and the Parks team planted trees in a location in front of the Old Manor House. The trees will be cared for by the Parks team and the space will be a place for reflection for the community spirit shown by the people of Broxtowe. Mayor of Broxtowe helps to plant trees Councillor Janet Patrick, Mayor of Broxtowe said: “This has been a challenging and heartwarming year, in equal measure. Some people have hit some very hard times and some have supported others and done amazing things for their community. These

trees being planted aren’t just good for the environment and will look lovely but will also serve as a reminder to us all what a year it has been and even in stressful and uneasy times, we can pull through, together, 2m apart. When the bluebells start to come out in the spring, this space will come to life and hopefully mark a new dawn in the fight against COVID-19”.
This is event was organised to mark National Tree Week, the UK’s largest annual tree celebration which marks the start of the winter tree planting season (November to March each year). This year, it took place 28th November – 6th December. The Tree Council first established National Tree Week in March 1975 to support national replanting of trees after the outbreak of Dutch Elm disease. Each year, upward of a quarter of a million people don their boots and gloves and come together to plant trees. Though we may not be able to get together to plant trees as we usually would due to the pandemic, The Tree Council and local councils like Broxtowe Borough Council are still bringing people together to celebrate trees with a programme of arts and culture COVID-safe events.

THE DAY HAS ARRIVED! Ilkeston Fresh Start For Hens. It’s rehoming day at last. What all the fuss is about. Finally the little hens are going to go their forever homes. They have no clue, as they are gathered and crated, in their thousands, at crack of dawn, that their lives will soon change forever. Around a week before the day all collection points have emailed their rehomers to give address details and times of collection. Everyone knows what to do. The driver keeps in contact and volunteers wait for the loaded van to arrive. Then it’s to work. Carrying a crate between 2 of us we carry the hens to the run that is ready, with lots of food and water, for them. Squawking in surprise they are unceremoniously unloaded and rush off to gobble at the corn. Practised volunteers quickly check the girls for any signs of stress/injury. If we see one she is removed and kept back. FSFH pay vet bills for first 2 weeks so, if necessary, she will visit an Avian vet the following week At the agreed time, excited rehomers arrive. Carrying boxes and crates of every description they descend on us. One family at a time, they come into the run and pick out their new pets. This is such a lovely time as everyone knows hens bring great joy to a family. And away they go. With our good wishes and offers of additional support. Then it all starts all over again! Do call Dee on 07946 653173 for info and like/share FB Ilkeston Fresh Start for Hens.

Cinema Moves A Step Closer As Work Continues On Beeston Square The team behind Beeston’s new cinema has provided an update on its progress, with work continuing safely on site during the most recent lockdown measures. Despite the varying restrictions on construction work since the first national lockdown in March, the build of the cinema has progressed well, and is on target to be completed imminently. The keys for the new eight-screen leisure venue will then be handed to operator The Arc Cinema, ahead of its opening in summer 2021. Ahead of then, the new public areas of the square will be open to the public in the new year. Councillor Greg Marshall, from Broxtowe Borough Council’s Project Board said: “We’re absolutely delighted with the progress that has been made on the cinema. This year has been challenging for so many people in so many ways, and it has been no exception for this project.
Mike Atkinson, project manager at Bowmer + Kirkland, said: “This project has been a pleasure to work on from start to finish. It has been a prime example of collaborative working throughout the project team and the supply chain to overcome the difficulties and challenges encountered due to the worldwide pandemic.Image of the construction of the cinema with the tram stop next to it “Bowmer + Kirkland is extremely proud to have been involved in the project and looks forward to enjoying the facilities with the rest of the team once the fit out is complete and it is safe for us all to do so.” The cinema forms the cornerstone of the Beeston Square development, which is led by Broxtowe Borough Council and also features food and beverage units, public spaces and 132 new homes.
“However, thanks to the close partnership between Bowmer + Kirkland, The Arc Cinema and the project board, work has been able to proceed at pace and on track for completion by the end of the year. “Once open, the cinema will create a fantastic destination for the people of Beeston and the wider Broxtowe area, as well as providing a much-needed boost to the town’s post-5pm economy.”

Message from Councillor John McGrath Hi everyone, It is with very sad news that I start my column. A good friend of mine and colleague, three times Mayor of Stapleford, father, brother, friend, grandad and husband, sadly passed away recently. It was an honour to call him a friend Cllr Ray Darby. God rest him. It seems that a lot of us have be touched by sadness most of the year. Let us hope that the next year will be a year that we will remember for the happiness. One thing that has been great in the sad year is the way that many groups of people have pulled together to help each other. The hamper appeal is one in particular that for many years Sharon Hands and her team of ladies organised gifts and hampers for many people of Stapleford who are vulnerable and ill. With The Old Cross, Jockey, Larry's, West End, Mill Club, Cllr Ray Darby Conservative club and Equalised Club all donating prizes to be raffled for funds towards the hampers. in previous years the team would go around collecting donations but due to Coronavirus the couldn't happen. This year with the help of Stapleford Mutual Aid group, the Helpful Bureau and Saxon Cross ladies from the Health Centre, Progress Rail, C&H, Premier Cables, Sainsburys Derby Road and STFC have all helped in a fantastic effort to raise ÂŁ2000. I myself (Maggie) dressed as an elf while delivering mail to help raise money. Thanks to the people of Bramcote and surrounding areas for their donating. I greatly appreciate it. On 19th December with the help of many elves from Stapleford, 175 hampers where delivered to the people nominated by the community to help them through this period. A bicycle was delivered to a family, carols were sung while delivering to spread the Christmas cheer. A brilliant effort from the brilliant people of Stapleford.

On to politics now. HS2 may not come through Toton and Stapleford. I firstly began being in favour of this, but I now have my reservations. There would be a disruption to the surrounding areas and a complete lack of compensation for the Stapleford people. If it does goes ahead and I have said before , I promise you that I will fight for compensation for the people of Stapleford. I was glad to see that our MP Mr Henry voted for the restrictions again ,but was slated in certain quarters. Through this terrible pandemic the government need to be more decisive and come up with a 10 year plan to keep our businesses, schools and communities in touch with each other. We need to look out for each other rather then playing against. Wishing you all the very best for 2021! Cllr John (Maggie) McGrath

Message from Stapleford Community Group Stapleford Community Group volunteer, Richard MacRae, has been awarded Mansfield Building Society’s Community Star Award for 2020. Richard won the award in recognition of the work he has done for the people of Stapleford, including collecting donations and delivering food parcels, organising job fairs and estate clear-ups, and even putting down sand bags to help residents at risk of flooding. As well as being crowned ‘Community Star’, Richard won £100 Love2Shop vouchers and a £250 donation to Stapleford Community group. In addition, Amanda Hill from Clipstone Miners Welfare Community Trust was named runner-up, receiving the Society’s ‘Highly Commended’ award for her tireless work running a number of community groups in Clipstone, including the local youth club which she runs with the help of her daughters. The awards were made following nominations earlier in the year as part of preparations for the Society’s community event at its Annual General Meeting. As social distancing measures prevented the physical event happening, this year’s honours have had to be awarded remotely. Mansfield Building Society’s Community Star award is now in its fourth year and recognises the amazing work that volunteers do to help improve the lives of people in the local community. Richard Crisp, Commercial Development Executive said that, yet again, the commitment and dedication shown by volunteers in the Society’s Heartland Area has been truly heart-warming:“We received some excellent nominations for this year’s Community Star Award and, now more than ever, our communities need people like Richard and Amanda as the impact of the pandemic is felt across the country. Even though the last 12 months have been incredibly challenging, we didn’t want the year to pass without recognising these extraordinary individuals who continue support some of the most vulnerable people in society.” Community Star, Richard MacRae, said that his voluntary work was all the more fulfilling because of the support the whole group offered:“I’m delighted to receive this award on behalf of the team. There is something very special about our local community spirit and I’m proud to be making a real difference to people’s lives.I’m grateful to Mansfield Building Society for this award which I hope inspires others - I look forward to passing on the baton to next year’s ‘Community Star’ when we’re all able to meet safely again.” by Donna MacRae - Stapleford Community Group
