It‛s Gardener Steve here! and I‛m bringing you gardening tips, news and events.

14 PLEASE MENTION GRAPEVINE WHEN RESPONDING TO ADVERTISEMENTS .

Hello WelcomeGardeners…tothismonth's Life in the garden, I can’t believe its September! But then again next year's spring bulb catalogue has arrived and it's always such a great read, these are the bulbs that we buy and plant now which will then give us our beautiful spring Septemberdisplays.isalovely month in the garden, still giving lots of colour hopefully after the incredibly dry summer and the heat wave's we have had?. I do hope your gardens are starting to recover and your grass starting to green up! I know my garden is getting there slowly. Our gardens and plants deserve medals don't you think? they’re tough old boots really!! This month is also a little more relaxed compared to the busy months of spring and summer, but it is the ideal time plant new plants and to divide existing plants while the soil is still warm, and there’s less need to water as the days will be cooler.

Jobs for you to do in your garden this month…

Life in the garden.HelloGardeners…

• To help pumpkins ripen in time for Halloween remove any leaves shadowing the fruits.

• When beans and peas finish cropping simply cut the plant away at ground level, leaving the roots in the soil. These crops fix nitrogen which is slowly released into the soil as the roots break down.

• Continue to feed and dead head hanging basket and containers and they will keep flowering till the first frosts

• Fill gaps in borders with autumn flowering plants such as Sedum, Aster, Chrysanthemum and Japanese Anemones to extend the colour to the end of the season.

Gardener Steve’s plant of the month

• Plant hyacinth and amaryllis bulbs for forcing for an early display

Pest and Diseases: Slugs, snails and vine weevil can attack also root rot

Sedum is a perennial with thick, succulent leaves, fleshy stems, and clusters of star-shaped flowers. There are many types of Sedums, they all have different uses: such as low–growing varieties for ground covers and rock gardens and tall varieties for borders. Sedums are easy to care for and are good for cut flowers. Sedum Autumn Joy is a taller growing variety. Sedum specablie ‘ Autumn Joy’ has succulent, lettuce-green leaves, topped with salmon-pink flower-heads in summer, maturing to pinkish-bronze then coppery-red in autumn. This is an ideal perennial as a filler plant for a sunny, well-drained spot in the front or middle of the border. A valuable source of nectar for butterflies and bees in late summer to early autumn , the dried flower heads provide structure and colour in the winter

• Keep Camellias and Rhododendrons well-watered at this time of year to ensure that next year's buds develop well.

Height and Spread: 60cm x 60cm (2ft x 2ft)

• Now is the time to buy and plant spring flowering bulbs

chop technique in May, Cut back after flowering or leave till spring as faded flowers give interest through the winter months

Soil: Any garden soil, well drained

• To minimise smoke, where wood is burnt in an exempted appliance, it should have a moisture content of less than 20%. This means if you use foraged wood, you must ensure it has been dried out properly before use. If you are buying wood from a supplier, look for the woodsure ready to burn logo and keep it in a cool dry place before use.

• Many DEFRA exempt appliances are multi-fuel use and can be used with smokeless fuels such as smokeless briquettes etc.

There’s a limit on how much smoke you can release from a chimney you can only burn authorised fuel, unless you use an ‘exempt appliance’ In England you may have to pay a penalty of up to £300 if your local council decides your chimney releases too much smoke. You can be fined up to £1,000 if you burn unauthorised fuel without an exempt appliance.

With energy bills rising, you may be thinking of using open fires and log burners to keep a room warm in your house.

Most of Broxtowe Borough is a Smoke Control Area. This means that you should only use log burners or appliances that are exempted by DEFRA, with the correct fuel and in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

• If you are using your open fire or log or multi-fuelled burner for the first time in a while, ensure the chimney or flue has been swept and is clear. Always ensure you have a working carbon monoxide detector in any rooms with a solid fuel appliance to keep you and your family safe.

• Never burn pallets, old fencing, furniture or treated wood as it is treated with chemicals which can release toxins when burnt.

• More guidance on smoke control areas can be found on the Government's Smoke Control Area Rules webpage. https://www.gov.uk/smoke-control-area-rules?

Energy Bills Are Rising . Advice on using open fires and log burners.

Many parts of the UK are smoke control areas where:

• If you are using an open fire, ensure you use a smoke free fuel. Logs cannot be used on an open fire in a smoke control area, they can only be burnt on an appliance exempted by DEFRA for burning wood.

CHURCH MUSIC-A-THON IS A RESOUNDING HIT

28 PLEASE MENTION GRAPEVINE WHEN RESPONDING TO ADVERTISEMENTS .

A highly successful Music-at-thon at Beeston Methodist Church raised more than £4,000 towards the restoration and modernisation of the splendid 1902 pipe organ. Seventy five local musicians, including organists, a string trio, vocalists, pianists, a flute quartet, folk musicians, a trumpet trio, three choirs and a baroque ensemble, performed in half hour slots throughout the day and night, filling the church with music for 24 hours. The event culminated with a special Sunday morning service on August 21, attended by Broxtowe MP Darren Henry and his wife Caroline.Organiser Fiona Fyfe said: “The music-a thon was a great success and enjoyed by all involved – whether playing, listening or helping behind the scenes. It was wonderful to be able to fill the church with an incredible variety of music. We are so grateful to all the performers and the many volunteers, who made the event possible.

The next fundraising event is a craft fair at the church on Saturday, October 15th 2022 from 10am to 3pm. A wide range of crafts will be on view at the 18 stalls with refreshments and light lunches available through the day.

“As well as raising more than £4,000 through donations and sponsorship, we were delighted by the number of people who came into the church to listen and support the performers. For some it was their first visit to Beeston Methodist Church.”

The music-a-thon was the latest in a rolling programme of fundraising events that have included organ recitals, garden parties, a quiz and a sponsored walk. Beeston Methodist Church is planning a £1.6m modernisation scheme to enable it to respond better to community needs in the 21st century. The distinctive 120-year building on Chilwell Road is already used by hundreds of people a week, who attend a wide range of church and community activities. As part of it’s commitment to the Mission Possible project, church members are now three quarters of the way towards their £200,000 target.

Her last role was as a stock manager for the high street bath and beauty products firm Lush, but she has also spent time as an English teacher in Italy, a waitress and a student ambassador, having studied Italian at university. Although all of them were roles that involved working with people and she enjoyed her work at Lush, Hannah says that she was still searching for a job that was more people-focussed and more about helping others.

Funeral arranger Hannah puts the care into career as she settles in at Gillotts.

Then the loss of her own father to cancer last year led her to arrange his funeral with an all-female funeral firm, whose care and attention during the process showed her that this might be the industry for her. This prompted her to apply for a role at Gillotts when a vacancy and the rest, as they say, is history.

36 PLEASE MENTION GRAPEVINE WHEN RESPONDING TO ADVERTISEMENTS .

Hannah is based at the company’s Stapleford branch, where her role involves meeting the families, finding out what arrangements they would like and helping the company’s director in Stapleford, Alan Winfield, to put everything together.

She said: “The funeral firm which looked after my dad were brilliant. We wanted a church service where people wore bright colours so that it wouldn’t be a traditional funeral but a fitting occasion where we celebrated his life. Before that, and before working at Gillotts, my understanding of funeral homes was very different to what it actually is and I didn’t realise how unique funerals can be.

I have also learned that the process of organising a funeral can be just as important as the funeral itself. I like that it’s a caring role and its a privilege to aid and support in arrang ing funerals which can help people find closure after losing a loved one.” For more details visit www.gillotts.co.uk

The latest recruit to join Nottingham shire-based Gillotts Funeral Directors says she has put the care into her career after she gave up a job in retail to take up a new role at the company.

Funeral arranger Hannah Chapman has just completed her first six months at Eastwood-based Gillotts, which operates four branches across the county and another across the border in Heanor.

Rueben, currently working for his piano diploma from the Royal College of School of Music, will play pieces by Beethoven, Rachmaninoff and other composers during the concert. Serena will sing several classical items and Leo and Lara will perform songs from modern West End musicals

Just 4 – comprising classical singer and BMC member Serena Lindsay, pianist Rueben Lee and musical theatre performers Leo Foxwhite and Lara Eley - are lining up a concert programme that should contain something for everyone.

The new Flood Warning for Beeston and Wollaton aims to provide timely information for the Tottle Brook.

As a new service, the Environment Agency is keen to work with the community to ensure that this Flood Warning is as accurate as possible. They have a network of volunteer Flood Wardens in flood risk areas across the country, who help their communities to prepare for and respond to flooding. They also act as a direct link to the Environment Agency, giving duty officers information from the community and feedback about our warning service.

The Environment Agency is pleased to announce that a new Flood Warning Service is now available for the Beeston and Wollaton communities. Flood Warnings tell people about expected risk of flooding to their home or business and help people make informed decisions about how to respond. This new service provides a warning to the 352 properties which are at risk of flooding from the Tottle Brook.

Beeston and Wollaton to receive a new Flood Warning Service.

A Severe Flood Warning means you are in immediate danger, and you must follow advice from emergency services.

A Flood Alert informs the public of the possibility of flooding to low-lying land and roads, and advises people to avoid riverside footpaths and take diversions to reduce the risk of encountering flooded roads.

A Flood Warning encourages people to act now, which means moving family, pets and cars to safety, turning off gas, water and electricity, and ensuring that your medicines, insurance documents and anything else you wouldn't want to lose in a flood is safe.

I want to thank those who took the time to give their views and all social care sta across the county for their hard work and dedication throughout the pandemic. We want to do everything we can to continue to make getting vaccinated as simple and straightforward as possible. Covid-19 will still be with us as we move into the challenging autumn and winter periods and the council’s Public Health Team, working with its partners in the NHS, is committed to making the Covid-19 vaccination accessible to all social care sta , to keep those using, living and working in social care as safe as possible. I’d also like to encourage all those eligible for the autumn booster to get the jab when they are invited. Vaccination remains our best defence against infection.”

information on the booster is available on the government website.

1 red pepper, seeded and chopped

Tip - Try lightly frying the chorizo and sauages to make them crunchy before adding to the rice, but make sure the sausages are chunky, at least 2 inches

Ingredients:

JAMBALAYAMEALSSAVERMONEY

Slice some french bread to soak up any juices (optional )

2 handfuls of frozen sweetcorn kernels or a 198g tin, well drained a large sprinkling of Cajun seasoning

Forget microwave meals bought from the shop, pre-packed and pricey. You can make your own food for the family in minutes using a microwave. Saving both money and time. Here is a Jambalaya, a quick cheap meal for a family of four. You can also increase or decrease the quantity to suit for one person or more. Ideal meal for colder evenings to come.

3. Take the bowl out of the microwave, cover it with a plate and leave to stand for 5 minutes before stirring in the parsley, (if you are using it). Serve the jambalaya straight from the bowl, with the soured cream or creme fraiche to spoon over it, add chopped spring onions on top if using

2. Cover the bowl with cling film and pierce a couple of holes in it with a knife. Microwave the rice for 10 minutes at 750W. Tear off the cling film and stir everything, then return the uncovered bowl to the microwave for another 12-15 minutes until the rice is done.

To serve - a small handful of parsley, chopped (optional)

Method: 1. Pour the tomatoes into a large microwavable bowl. Fill the empty can with rice and tip it into the bowl, then fill the can with water and pour it in. Stir in the pepper, chorizo, sweetcorn, Cajun seasoning and some salt and pepper to season.

2 chorizo or other spicy sausages, about 200g/8oz, skinned and chunkily chopped

400g can chopped tomatoes with garlic

142ml tub soured cream or creme fraiche

Alternatives - You could use a packet of cooked peeled prawns and add at least three minutes before the end. Or chopped cooked chicken, mushrooms and peas.

2 Spring onions finely chopped (optional)

Above: John Flynn Opticians new Heidelberg Spectralis OCT machine is one of the few in the UK, and is best in class, offering hospital-standard diagnosis of eye health for the optician’s patients.

John Flynn Opticians’ new machine, though, builds on this technology to create 4D imagery accurate to just a single micron – one hundredth of the width of a human hair.

“I’d heard that the glasses were great quality and the service was great at John Flynn Optician. The staff have been very helpful and gave me all the facts I needed. I love the personal touch and that you don’t have to ask for helpit’s just given. I love my new glasses - the style, the colour, the quality - everything. Dan and Annette have been brilliant from the minute I walked in the door. They are very friendly and provided perfect service in every way. I will be coming back and will share my experience with others.”

“I cannot speak highly enough of Dr Janjua and all his team at Flynn Opticians in Beeston. Due to wrong prescriptions in the past going to him changed my life. Not only do you get the best product on the market and expert advice, everybody is so helpful and kind. I would not go anywhere else.”

“Just picked up my third pair of specs from Flynns. I’ve used them for years and cannot fault them, from the excellent care with my sight test to Annette and Wendy who are on hand to advise, make sure your specs fit and sit properly and just generally make you feel welcome. Nothing is too much trouble. Thank you all. Until my next visit.”

The result is great service, clear vision and true peace of mind; a holistic service that’s clearly better at providing quality eyecare.

The system also uses artificial intelligence to track the exact position of successive scans, overlaying them precisely to check changes over successive months or years. Fast, contact-free and painless, the system can also send images to hospital departments for other clinicians to review in the event of a referral.

Optometrist Dr. Janjua’s new equipment provides hospital-standard insight into your health and is one of just a handful of such machines anywhere in the UK...

technology is nothing without expertise, and so Dr. Janjua is committed to interpreting the results of a scan and explaining findings in an accessible way. With the highest quality diagnostic information comes the most accurate prescription, and alongside the very best ophthalmic lenses from across the industry – Zeiss, Nikon and Hoya –the practice’s state-of-the-art equipment is crucial, but only when used alongside the very best diagnostic skill and the provision of quality ophthalmic lenses and luxury frames.

Foresight. Hindsight. Insight. It’s quite clear how much importance we place on sight. We’ve all come to recognise that a first-class optometrist will not only make your vision sharper, as a result of the prescription they determine you need, but will also help to assess your overall health, using your eyes to as an indicator of your general health. As eye-care technology has finessed, some optometrists have invested in decent technology, but some diagnostic equipment remains the preserve of dedicated eye-care departments in specialist hospitals such as Moorfields, Manchester Royal Eye Hospital and Nottingham’s Queens Medical Centre. Those specialist facilities and teaching hospitals have previously been able to boast the best diagnostic technology, which High Street opticians could only look upon with envy... that is, until now. Beeston’s John Flynn Opticians, established in 1938, recently took delivery of its new Heidelberg Spectralis machine which is –without exaggeration – the best OCT scanner available for any eye-care practitioners and one which most dedicated hospital eyecare departments would covet. It’s one of just a handful of machines here in the UK and as Dr. Janjua says, it’s the gold standard for dedicated eye hospitals, let alone a High Street optician, providing him with unprecedented accuracy and clarity when making a diagnosis.

“We can use the technology to examine tiny details that help us to detect eye disease at the earliest stages, reducing the risk of sight loss and improving our patients’ lives,” says Dr NaturallyJanjua.

John Flynn Opticians provides eye examinations, prescription eyewear and contact lenses from its practice on Devonshire Avenue, Beeston, NG9 1BS, call 0115 925 5051 / 0115 939 2421 or see www.johnflynnopticians.co.uk.

Currently, around 2.5 million people aged over 66 are entitled to Pension Credit to top up their retirement income* - yet around 30% of those who qualify aren’t claiming it. According to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), this equated up to an estimated £1.7bn being left unclaimed in 2019/20. Turn2us is urging people to use it’s Benefits Calculator to find out what they could be entitled to claim to help alleviate any financial burden which they might face. Michael Clarke, Head of Information Programmes at Turn2us says: “Pension Credit can act as a vital lifeline for people aged over 66 who might be on a low income and it is crucial for people to find out whether they are eligible to claim.

People of state pension age are being urged to check if they are entitled to Pension Credit as new data reveals 7% of over 65s say they are close to a financial crisis. Findings from a recent YouGov poll of 2033 UK adults, of which 535 were over 65, commissioned by the national poverty charity, Turn2us, also found that 22% of people over the age of 65 say they feel more anxious as a direct result of the rising cost of living. In addition, 48% say they would not know how to get support from an organisation offering advice around finances and debt.

“The impact of the cost-of-living crisis cannot be underestimated a and in the coming months, additional sources of income will be a huge help for people to weather this financial storm. By using

“Pension Credit is a gateway to other financial support, and we estimate that if someone received all the additional money that Pension Credit provides a springboard to, they could get up to £7,000 a year more money in their pocket. As the unprecedented rise in the cost-of-living continues to hit hard and push more older people to crisis point, it has never been more important for the money set aside to reach the people who need it.”

Morgan Vine, Head of Policy & Influencing at Independent Age added: “We know Pension Credit has the potential to lift 440,000 older people out of poverty, yet it still has the lowest uptake of any income-related benefit. Too many people in later life are still having to choose whether to heat their home or buy food, despite being eligible for this financial support.

Pension Credit aims to bring additional support to people’s income, on top of their state pension and can also be a ‘passport’ to other benefits. These include council tax reductions, the Warm Home Discount, and Housing Benefit. For people aged 75 and over, they are also eligible for a free TV licence as part of the support.

Preventing suicide is everybody’s business: one in five people have suicidal thoughts at some point in their life. Most of us may have been affected by suicide in some way either directly or indirectly. Suicide is not inevitable and can be prevented. Self-harm is when somebody intentionally harms or injures their body. It’s often a way of coping and/or expressing overwhelming emotional distress. The severity of self-harm is not linked to the level of distress. Self-harm can affect anyone of any age. Self-harm can be a risk factor for suicide, but not everyone who self-harms will take their own life. It’s important not to make assumptions, but it’s important to let someone who selfharms know that it’s safe to talk about self-harm and suicide.
