Why do we wear the red poppy?

The poppy became a symbol of Remembrance and hope for a peaceful future in the aftermath of the First World War. Since 1921 the Royal British Legion collectors have been at the heart of the Poppy Appeal. And this year they will be back in local communitites across the UK to collect donations that help RBL continue it's vital work.The poppy is red because that’s the natural colour of the poppy flower.

During the First World War previously beautiful countryside was blasted, bombed and fought over, again and again. The landscape swiftly turned to fields of mud where little or nothing could grow.

But out of this devastation the delicate but resilient bright red Flanders poppies grew and flourished in their thousands.The red poppy directly supports the Armed Forces community The red poppy is worn as a show of support for the Armed Forces com munities across the UK, Allied Forces and the Commonwealth.

Only donations from the sale of Royal British Legion red poppies go directly towards helping the Armed Forces community.

Like the natural flower, the original version of the poppy did not feature a leaf. A leaf was first introduced in the 1960s and they slowly became an optional extra.

By 1984 demand for them had grown to 12 million a year, and in 1995 poppies with leaves included were made available for the first time.

Tips for energy saving and keeping your home warm

Line your curtains with cheap fleece. Chunky window-wear, especially lined and insulated, will keep the warmth in. If you're on a budget, line curtains yourself with cheap fleece blankets (from about £2 at places such as Ikea and Asda) –but remember to check it's fire retardant. Put reflective panels behind radiators - Most heat is lost through external walls. Radiator reflector panels bounce heat back into the room rather than let it pass through external walls. The Energy Saving Trust says homes with uninsulated walls will get the most benefit.

Use the microwave instead of the oven - If you can use your microwave instead of the oven to cook certain foods, do. They use less energy than ovens because they only heat the food, not the air around it. Time for a cuppa? Stop filling the kettle up to the brim – and don’t be one of the 23 per cent that re-boils the kettle. Boiling more water than necessary each time could save you £36 year, based on calculations from the Energy Saving Trust. Changing over to LED bulbs, which are far more efficient. In fact, they generally need just 10% of the electricity compared to an older bulb. For example, a traditional 60W bulb usually produces the same amount of light as a 6W LED bulb.How much you really save depends on the number of lights you have around the home. But estimates range from £50 to £200 each year.

A major attraction for festive visitors, last year Christmas at Wollaton Hall was attended by 100,000 people, who travelled from across the region and beyond to marvel at the wonderous displays of lights and lasers.

People are now collecting vinyl. In the last few years, vinyl records have made a comeback in the music industry. Though they were once replaced by digital formats, vinyl records have seen a resurgence in popularity due to the warmer sound and nostalgic feel they provide. Vinyl records are tangible – Obviously, there’s some appeal to buying something and being able to physically handle it. Buyers are more likely to regard their purchase as something of value when it’s a physical object than they are if it’s merely something that they downloaded. The artwork on many of the of the albums are a pure joy to look at, talented artists both in the past and present have been commisioned to work on numerous albums covering various themes.

Vinyl records are bigger than compact discs, which makes it easier to read song titles, lyrics, and liner notes than it is on a compact disc. Even people with relatively good eyesight have long complained that reading the small booklets enclosed with compact discs is difficult. The larger size of record albums also allows for better appreciation of cover photos and graphics, which often represent a lot of time, money and effort on the part of the artists who created them. Some of the titles that were issued in the 1990s as CD-only releases are now being issued as vinyl records for the first time ever and they’re selling well. Back in the 1970’s some albums came with posters, Dark Side Of The Moon by Pink Floyd for example, where the poster was hung in many teenagers apartments and bedrooms. There is something quite satisfying showing off your record collection to friends, family, and even grandchildren.

Jazz ,Blues,Rock, and Soul music for some of the younger generation has become a new interest, the Beatles and Elvis Presley vinyls are still being played today on the turntable. How and where do you store your record collection? Many people are moving away from storing them on shelves, - the weight being one problem, or there is just too many to store away, but the main complaint is the fact that the title on side of the record sleeve can’t be read .

Varna State Opera was founded in 1947 by the renowned Bulgarian tenor Peter Raycheff. They formed the image of the Varna Ballet and brought it to the international stage and founded the first and now world-famous Varna International Ballet Competition in 1964. Since 2010 Varna State Opera and Varna Drama Theatre are united in one cultural institute called Theatre and Music Production Centre Varna.

Giselle - The most poignant of all classical ballets is filled with dramatic passion in a chilling and heart-rending tale of love, treachery and forgiveness from beyond the grave. The moving story of delicate Giselle and her aristocratic but duplicitous lover Albrecht is set to a glorious score. From the visual splendour of the rustic villagers happily gathering the harvest at the start of the story to the eerie moonlit forest haunted by beautifully drifting spirits, this production is unforgettable.

The Nutcracker - This most famous of fantasy ballets for all the family begins as night falls on Christmas Eve. Nutcracker

MONEY SAVER MEALS Pasta with Beans & Sausage

Ingredients:

400g fusilli (or any other another shape)

3 free-range pork sausages, cases removed

1 tsp fennel seeds, lightly crushed in a pestle and mortar

20g butter (or margerine that can be lightly fried)

1 tin flageolet beans, drained

1 garlic clove, crushed

300ml dry white wine or stock (any stock , chicken etc)

40g hard cheese, such as parmesan or strong cheddar, grated .

Small bunch flatleaf parsley, roughly chopped

Method:

Cook the pasta in boiling salted water according to the packet instructions until al dente.

Meanwhile, fry the sausagemeat and fennel seeds in a large frying pan for 5-10 minutes until crisp and cooked through. Add the butter to the pan, reduce the heat to medium and add the beans and garlic. Cook, stirring regularly, for about 5 minutes, then mash some of the beans with the back of a spoon. Stir in the wine/stock and cook for 5 minutes, then turn off the heat. Drain the pasta., leave a small amount of pasta water .Add the pasta to the sausages and beans with the pasta water. Toss, then serve topped with the grated cheese and parsley.

From installing key safes to decorating and everything in between, you can be asured of a great service.

The Home Support Team are always on hand to help with all domestic chores and support you may require.

We also have our befriending service which is vital in providing people with the friendship and support they may need.

The North West’s leading comedy / folk group will visit towns and cities such as Colwyn Bay, Morecambe, Darwen, Warrington, Preston, Bolton, Middleton, Lytham St Anne’s, Blackpool, Buxton and Ulverston.

To coincide with their UK Tour, they release their brand-new single, ‘Wild Mountain Thyme’ on Friday 7th October, taken from their forthcoming album ‘New World in the Morning’ which was due out on Friday 14th October.

“To us, this traditional Scottish Folk Song depicts the love that Queen Elizabeth II had for the beautiful Scottish Highlands. It could almost be a signature to her love and time spent north of the border. It’s such a poignant and beautiful traditional song and it seems a perfect track as our tribute to the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. Having been working on the album for almost 2 years, through Covid and into the summer of 2022, It’s a mixture of self-penned and traditional songs as well as some very well-known folk covers. We have used various session musicians including Ken Nichol of Steeleye Span and the wonderful country folk guitarist Pete Frampton. e album has that Weavers comedy element but is brought back down to earth with some beautifully poignant trad folk songs. We are dedicating this album to our late Tony Berry who sadly passed away in 2019.” The Houghton Weavers have been entertaining folk up and down the country and promise a fun-packed, sing-along family show with great music and funny stories galore! There will be plenty of laughter and the old familiar songs like the Blackpool Belle, Matchstalk Men and Wild Rover mixed together with some new songs, and festive perennial favourites on the Christmas Tour like Let It Snow, Bless Your Whiskers and White Christmas.

Police operation launched to target unruly youths blighting residents' lives in Beeston.

Police have launched an operation to target unruly young people who are blighting the lives of residents around Beeston town centre.

Residents have expressed concerns about an increase in anti-social behaviour and criminal damage in the town, including across the tram network.

In response to these reports, additional police officers will be deployed to the hotspot areas to improve the situation.

Officers will take action against any young person who breaks the law, but they will also be able to use dispersal orders to prevent them returning to the area.

Neighbourhood Inspector Mike Ebbins, who covers the Beeston area, said the operation has been launched to ensure residents feel safe and that their concerns are being addressed.

He said: “ e area has repeatedly been a ected by a small number of groups causing disruption to our residents, businesses, and visitors.Appeals have been made for parents to challenge and educate their children over their actions, but the problem still exists. “I don’t want residents to think we have ignored this problem. We haven’t. We have tried to engage with the young people and work at nding solutions to the problem.

“But enough is enough. ere will be a no-nonsense approach and we now have a plan in place to put o cers in these locations for an extended period of time. Incidents have included the criminal damage of vehicles, abusive and threatening behaviour in the town centre and intimidating people on the tram network. Areas covered by the police team will be Beeston town centre and the areas around Dovecote Lane and Chilwell Road. e operation will run from October 31 through December.

He added: “Operation Potassium will allow my team to focus on this issue. O cers will target groups causing problems and look for opportunities to take action.

“Dispersal powers will also be in place to move on unwanted groups, and we will work with the council to o er alternative provision for young people. Residents have called for a visible deterrent in Beeston and Operation Potassium will provide this presence and will mean they can be reassured that we are taking their concerns seriously. Beeston is a great place to live, work and visit and we won’t have it spoilt by a small minority.”

Cllr Milan Radulovic, Leader of Broxtowe Borough Council, said:

“We have positively and creatively engaged with these young people in Beeston and where that has failed, they need to understand that with freedom comes responsibility. Residents have been asking for this. ey feel intimidated and have real concerns.“If these young people continue to act in a way that threatens and intimidates people, we will not fail in our endeavours to make sure they comply with the law.”

Julian Smedley, NET Operations Manager, added: “We are pleased to support this latest initiative, as NET shares Nottinghamshire Police’s commitment to tackle anti-social across the communities we serve.“ is type of activity will not be tolerated on the tram network and, as well as taking part in joint patrols with the police we regularly share CCTV footage with them to identify groups and individuals responsible.”

SLADE first hit the road in 1966, touring throughout Great Britain and Europe and becoming a regular concert attraction. At the beginning of the eighties, Slade were invited to appear at the Reading Rock Festival, a massive annual event which attracted over 100,000 people. They literally stole the show, giving some of the world’s biggest rock bands a serious run for their money whilst kindling new interest from a whole new audience. As a result, the band signed a new record deal and unleashed the anthem "We'll Bring The House Down", which reached the Top-10 in the UK in January 1981. Slade were back! Not content to rest on their Glam laurels, Slade began forging a new path through the hugely influential British heavy rock scene. After a successful appearance at Castle Donnington in 1981, before a crowd of over 60,000 people, consolidated the bands position and paved the way for the single "Lock Up Your Daughters", and the album "Til Deaf Do Us Part".

While Slade were busy in the UK releasing the massive hit “My Oh My” to huge acclaim, LA metal band Quiet Riot were spreading the word Stateside with their version of "Cum On Feel The Noize", which proved so successful that they followed it up with "Mama Weer All Crazee Now". Throughout the start of the eighties Slade toured and recorded due to them once again being a major force in British pop'n'rock. The early nineties saw the bands "Radio Wall Of Sound" hit the UK Top-30 and thereby give Slade a solid 30 year chart run! In 1991, due to the continual demand from around the world, founder Slade member Dave Hill returned to touring by playing a few select dates in Europe prior to embarking on what turned out to be a very successful two-month tour of Australia. SLADE have continued to tour the world. They are firm favourites on the lucrative German festival scene and undertake an annual UK "Merry Christmas Everybody" tour in December. From 2nd - 29th November 2022, BWP are hosting a FREE exhibition at the Beeston Canalside Heritage Centre of photography, poetry, installation art and paintings. Many pieces have been created by women who have survived Domestic Abuse and were supported by BWP. It also features a painting of Richard Danny MacRae, completed by local artist Matthew Lyons as part of his ‘People of Beeston’ project. The pieces have been inspired by the themes of this year’s White Ribbon campaign(25 November) & Ann Craft Trust’s Adult Safeguarding Week 2022 (21 – 27 November), ‘The Goal’ and ‘Responding to Contemporary Safeguarding Challenges’. Chris Harris, BWP Partnership Manager, said: “We’re excited to begin our White Ribbon 2022 campaign with an exhibition of powerful pieces at the Beeston Canalside Heritage centre. Preventing suicide is everybody’s business: one in five people have suicidal thoughts at some point in their life. Most of us may have been affected by suicide in some way either directly or indirectly. Suicide is not inevitable and can be prevented.

Self-harm is when somebody intentionally harms or injures their body. It’s often a way of coping and/or expressing overwhelming emotional distress.

The severity of self-harm is not linked to the level of distress. Self-harm can affect anyone of any age. Self-harm can be a risk factor for suicide, but not everyone who self-harms will take their own life.It’s important not to make assumptions, but it’s important to let someone who selfharms know that it’s safe to talk about self-harm and suicide.
