Introducing Your New JBBA Coordinator

By Yvonne “Bonnie” Ramirez

ave you ever compared your life to a puzzle? I have. And I truly believe life is a huge puzzle. Life has a crazy way of working out. It’s funny how the puzzle pieces all eventually start fitting and making sense. A big “Hello” to all Beefmaster breeders/showers. My name is Yvonne Ramirez, but my family and friends call me Bonnie, so now that we will be family, please call me Bonnie. I am very excited about joining the Beefmaster family as the new Junior Beefmaster Breeders Association (JBBA) Coordinator! I look forward to big and great things! There’s nothing like a good ole face to face introduction, but until our paths cross in person, how about a little introduction about who I am to give you some background on this South Texas gal, “Bonnie Ramirez.” I am originally from the small south Texas town of Encino. I went to school and was raised around the Falfurrias area, where Beefmaster cattle were plenty. My FFA advisor and high school mentor raised Beefmaster cattle. The infamous Tom Lasater who is credited for developing the foundation Beefmaster breed/herd hailed

from my high school alma mater. How crazy is that? What a small world. Who would have thought that growing up around Beefmaster cattle I would be working for the Beefmaster Breeders United (BBU) family years later. But as the saying goes, “God works in mysterious ways and he has a plan!” Nonetheless, I am thrilled to embark on this new adventure. I don’t want to age myself too much so I’ll leave it vague talking about my childhood… I grew up being active in both 4-H and FFA and showing market hogs and breeding heifers mostly. I loved it … Everything about showing! From the early mornings to late nights to the halter breaking to the being drug around to the wins as well as losses to meeting new people and traveling to new places to the sick animals to the feeding and exercising to the “disagreements” with my parents, I loved every single second of raising and showing animals. I truly believe my involvement in 4-H and FFA helped shape me and has led me to where I am today, both personally and professionally. I am a huge advocate for the 4-H/FFA and showing lifestyle.

Currently I reside in the Sutherland Springs/Floresville area. Most recently I was working for the International Brangus Breeders Association (IBBA) as the Assistant to the Executive Vice President. Prior to my IBBA journey, I worked for Producers CO-OP Association – La Vernia Country Store, serving in the co-manager and marketing capacities. Before my time there, I served as the director of communications for the Texas Animal Health Commission. Some of my other work experience consists of working for the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, D&D Farm and Ranch, Wilson County News, and Ultimate Genetics-Sire Services. My professional experience was preceded by receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture, with an emphasis in animal science and a minor in communications, from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, TX. “Eat ‘em Kats!” I enjoy being a part of non-profit type endeavors. I feel it’s important for me to serve in ‘helping’ capacities. I thrive on knowing I am making a difference. It’s a very heartwarming and fulfilling feeling. Some of my non-profit involvement includes being a committee member for the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo Ranch Rodeo Finals and founder and president of Forget Me Not Benefit Alzheimer’s Team Roping Fundraiser. When

invited to help judge contests at the San Antonio or Houston Livestock Shows, I am always willing to help and be a part of those monumental life skill contests. I have had the pleasure and honor to have judged a handful of public speaking contests in San Antonio as well as a couple in Houston. Life is always busy… It seems that the older I get, the faster time flies. With a fast paced life, I still try to participate in extracurricular activities such as CrossFit, jogging, volleyball and announcing at team ropings. We have a handful of major stock shows in the horizon; Fort Worth, San Antonio and Houston. They will be here before we know it. And after the dust has settled with those shows, the 2018 JBBA National Show and Convention in Texarkana, Ark., will be on our tails. There’s so much to work hard towards. Let’s set ourselves some good, strong and attainable goals. I encourage you all to reach out to me to introduce yourselves, as well as share some of your short term and long term goals for the junior program. Beefmaster friends, I look forward to great things and above all, I look forward to serving you, our members and juniors, the heart and soul of our association. Juniors… You are our future!

They say that in life you should make your story a story that is inspiring and worth telling. I’m blessed for this opportunity and I am ready to start a new chapter with BBU. Let’s make our story one that is compelling, inspiring and one that everyone wants to hear! Let’s do this together as a team and family!

Being passionate about cattle and showing, I’m eager and excited to apply my skills, abilities, enthusiasm and experience towards my new BBU family. Let’s Move Mountains! Are you ready? I am! Happy Trails … See you down the Cattle Trail soon!

Financing A Junior Livestock Project

N

By Cherie Carrabba Bright - The Showbox

o one has ever claimed that showing livestock is inexpensive. It isn’t. It requires capital to purchase the animal, the feed, the supplies, and in most cases to build or redo a facility where the animal will be kept. Many junior exhibitors rely upon their parents to fund their first project(s) believing that the sale of that project will give them the amount of funding that they need for a second or third project. But some things do not work out as planned. Sometimes our hope of selling an animal in a premium sale at a major show doesn’t materialize, and that may result in a junior exhibitor wondering where to get the funds to continue showing livestock. What then? Fortunately, there are alternatives for those juniors who need funding for their livestock projects. The Farm Services Administration (FSA) will loan up to $5,000 a year for the purchase of a market or breeding project to be shown at

livestock shows. The program requires that the person supervising the project, the Ag teacher or county agent, supervise the project and sign off on the exhibitors’ plan for paying back the money. FSA interest rates are generally lower than a traditional lending institution’s rates. In addition some traditional lending institutions such as banks or credit unions have a loan program that junior exhibitors can utilize to purchase their project. It may require that the parents co-sign the loan, but it is a viable way to obtain financing for a junior livestock project(s). Check with the lending institution that the family uses to see if they have a program in place. The Texas major shows have several scramble programs available for junior exhibitors. These programs give junior exhibitors a stipend to purchase an animal that will be shown at that major show the next year.

10 - The Banner - Beefmaster Breeders United

The Houston Livestock Show’s program allows their scramble winners to purchase a steer instead of a heifer to be shown the next year. Scramble programs exist at Fort Worth, San Angelo, San Antonio, Austin, and Houston and the amounts given vary from show to show. TJLA CAMP will also have a program about scramble programs and how a junior can become a participant in the scramble program for one of the shows. (See the complete camp schedule in The Showbox). The local county fair is also an excellent avenue to earn money for a junior exhibitors next livestock project. Even if the exhibitor does not make the premium sale, there are often booster clubs and other buyer groups that help young people with an animal for sale. Check with officials at your local county fair to see what programs are in place. Sometimes breeders will sponsor a calf for a junior exhibitor. They may have an agreement that the exhibitor will pay back the breeder after show season is

over. Arrangements differ, but if someone in the family knows a breeder well, it will not hurt to ask them if they have ever done that. All that they can say is no, and all of us have been told no many times. And of course, let us not forget that a part time job has supplemented many junior exhibitors project programs. Jobs after school, during school vacations, and summers can not only help a young person earn money to purchase a project, but they can also provide valuable work experience which can help young people determine if they are truly interested in some field of endeavor. I have always said that I value hard work and persistence, and I also believe that: “Where there is a will; there is a way.” If a young person wants to have a livestock project then they can find a way to do so. Why should you get involved with Junior Beefmaster Breeders Association?

W

hat gets you to join an organization? Are you after scholarships? Are you after opportunities to gain experience? Or are you after your first buckle? The Junior Beefmaster Breeders Association (JBBA) has an opportunity for each of your wants. JBBA gives thousands of dollars to students each year, while giving them the opportunity for leadership roles, competitions to gain experience, or even connecting you with the best breeders for your operation. JBBA presents countless chances for you to get involved! Each year JBBA hosts its National Show and Convention in July and gives thousands of dollars for scholarships and purchase certificates. Members can apply for scholarships during their senior year up to the age of 24 on select scholarships, while being able to apply each year. Members also compete in many events at the JBBA National Show to win buckles and certificates that can be used for scholarships or a purchase a calf. To access these

By Alex Samano, JBBA President opportunities, involvement and enrollment as a member is required. Not convinced yet? JBBA encourages its members to become more involved and allow them to become major influences within the organization by presenting leadership roles for them to join. Any members who wants to have more of an influence with the members and organization can run for a leadership role. There are some requirements such as: at least 15 years of age for directors. These leadership opportunities teach its members responsibility, time management and public speaking skills. JBBA Board of Directors is after the best interest of its members and organization, so if you want to better yourself and our organization your involvement would be greatly appreciated. JBBA has many competitions for its members, and levels the playing field by creating events for each group of members ranging from junior, intermediate, and senior members. These competitions

consist of judging cattle, public speaking, and even showmanship. Each competition has different awards and allows for new members and old members to compete and win buckles, ribbons and even scholarships. These competitions also allow you to challenge yourself and help you gain experience for future events within or outside of the organization. Though JBBA encourages healthy competition, it also encourages for sportsmanship, so though you may not win any event, members who are positive and helpful for others are awarded for their success of sportsmanship. JBBA also encourages its members to connect with BBU members through the A.I. Program, which is mentioned on page 16. This relationship is very important because it allows for JBBA members to invest their own time and skills of

communicating with other Beefmaster breeders. This is very important because everyone can gain knowledge and skills for their own operation. This relationship between breeders and JBBA members also affects the growth within the breed. JBBA opens doors for new members and old members to contact breeders and make business deals and become more involved within their own operation. Now what are you waiting for? Get involved, become a member, become a leader, or even become a breeder. There’s no doubt that JBBA will only help and encourage you to do and become better. JBBA supports the youth and opens doors for its members, while allowing them to put forth the effort to gain the most out of these opportunities.

Feeds & Feeding for Junior Beef Cattle Projects

M

By Stephen P. Hammack, Ph.D. Extension Beef Cattle Specialist, Texas A&M University

ost junior beef cattle exhibitors today probably buy feed in a commercially mixed, complete ration. At least partly because of this, many junior feeders may know little of the basics of beef cattle nutrition. The following provides some principles to help choose among various commercial feeds or to formulate custom mixes. Beef cattle feeding involves attention to nutrient requirements. There are four basic classes of nutrients: vitamins, minerals, protein, and energy. VITAMINS - Most grains are deficient in vitamin A. Green feeds such as alfalfa hay (or growing grass) contain high levels of vitamin A. Other sources include vitamin A feeding concentrates and injections. Other vitamins usually are adequate in most rations. B-complex vitamins sometimes help when starting cattle on feed, especially drawn, stressed calves. Also, some people periodically give vitamin

B shots, feeling that appetite is improved. Others feed a complex, and costly, complete vitamin supplement throughout the feeding period. If you think this works, then do it. Peace of mind is worth something. MINERALS - Grains are high in phosphorous and low in calcium. So, minerals used in grain rations should be high in calcium and low in phosphorous. This is the opposite of a good pasture or range mineral, so be sure to use the right product. You’ll have the best results by balancing the complete mixed ration with minerals (including salt), rather than relying on free-choice consumption out of a mineral feeder. Trace mineral supplements can be mixed in the ration to insure they are present in adequate amounts. PROTEIN - The total diet should average around 11% to 13% crude protein (CP) for most uses. Younger, growing animals need more protein. Some feeders use a ration of

around 12% CP throughout the feeding period. Others prefer to feed more protein for starting and less to older, finishing cattle. ENERGY - Energy in cattle diets usually is expressed as Net Energy or Total Digestible Nutrients (TDN). Feed tags of commercial mixes do not list either of these factors, as they are not easily determined. However, crude fiber (CF, which is listed on feed tags) can be used to estimate energy content. High energy feeds like corn and milo (sorghum grain) are low in fiber. Low energy feeds such as cottonseed hulls are high in fiber. Low-energy, strictly growing rations usually contain around 60% to 65% TDN, which generally corresponds to a content of 15% to 20% CF. High energy fattening rations have over 70% TDN and less than 8% CF. General purpose or in-between rations have 65% to 70% TDN and 9% to 15% CF. These CF and TDN levels apply to the total ration including extra hay, if any is used. ROUGHAGE - Roughage is not technically a nutrient but is an important feeding factor. Rations low in roughage are more likely to cause digestive prob-

lems. Hays and some products like cottonseed hulls are high in roughage. Some grains with husks, like oats, have a roughage factor. Roughage is closely related to the fiber level. However, finely-ground high-fiber materials do not provide as much roughage factor as long-stem hay. Crude fiber is one of the factors listed in the analysis section of a feed tag. In addition, the ingredients section of a tag will list “roughage products, if any are included (possibly even by individual name such as cottonseed hulls), along with the percentage of such products if greater than 5 percent. In some mixes (especially those without oats) these roughage products listed in the ingredients may be the only source of roughage in the feed. However, if grains such as oats are included, the roughage part of the oats (husk) is not required to be listed in the percentage of roughage products. So, consideration should be given to both the crude fiber content and the percentage of roughage products in evaluating commercial mixed feeds. Even fattening rations generally should contain a minimum of 6% to 8%CF (10 to 15 percent roughage). Starter/

grower rations often have 15% to 20%CF (30 to 40 percent roughage). OTHER FACTORS - Molasses often is included in a feed to reduce dustiness and increase palatability. Special supplements such as milk replacers sometimes are fed. These may help, especially in hair bloom, particularly late in a feeding period when animals may not be full fed. Vitamin supplements already have been discussed. Some feeders like to include alfalfa. Many feeders effectively use a little long-stem grass hay to help avoid digestive problems, especially bloat. COMPLETE RATIONS- Two types of rations are those containing oats (A), and those without oats (B). Corn is included as a high energy source. Other grains could be included, such as milo or barley. Oats are a useful, well-balanced feed but often are expensive for their nutritional content. Some show rations contain no oats whatever. Some people question rations without oats, feeling that over fattening will occur if more corn is fed. However, notice that these higher corn-no oats ra-

tions contain more hulls, so the total energy (TDN) of the two types of rations is similar. Total energy consumption is the main factor controlling fattening, not what the source of energy might be. Remember, if you buy ready mixed feeds, use crude protein and crude fiber on the tag as a guide. FEEDING MANAGEMENT - How much should a calf be fed? It depends, on the type and amount of gain desired (growth or finishing) and the content of the rations. Growing cattle could be fed daily around 2 ½ to 3 percent of their body weight of a starter/grower ration or less of a medium energy ration. Finishing cattle could be fed 2 ½ to 3 percent of a medium energy ration or less of a high energy ration. If smaller amounts of a higher energy ration are fed then the percentage of protein may need to be raised, especially for growing animals, in order to keep the total amount of protein adequate. This is where personal preference and familiarity with your ration are important. Don’t change rations a lot, or at least know what you’re changing and why.

HEIFER FEEDING - Heifers require the same nutrients as steers except that growth is desired as opposed to fattening. A starter/grower ration could be used for the entire program fed at about 2 percent of body weight. Younger, thinner, or larger-framed heifers would need more of this ration (or possibly a mix of a medium energy ration) than older, fatter, or smaller framed heifers. Some other heifer programs are as follows: 1. 100 percent oats fed like the starter/grower ration above. Be sure to include salt and a freechoice mineral with around a 2:1 calcium: phosphorous ratio, and inject vitamin A about once a month if this oat program is followed. 2. Graze on wheat or oat pasture, plus salt and 2:1 mineral.

SUMMARY - As was said at the outset, a large percentage of today’s feeders rely on commercially mixed feeds. Many highly desirable products are available. In buying such feeds, insist on freshness and consistency from batch to batch. The premium paid for most show rations certainly warrants such insistence. Remember that crude protein, crude fiber, and roughage content, as shown on the feed tag, (along with physical characteristics) should be used to evaluate commercial mixes. Many steer and heifer feeding programs will work if you know what your feed contains and what your animal needs to do. There are no magic formulas. Additional information on animal science topics and junior beef cattle information can be found on the web at animalscience.tamu.edu.

3. Graze on good warm-season pasture or feed high quality grass hay free-choice (such as coastal bermuda, sudan, etc.), while feeding about 1 percent of body weight of a ration with 12% to 14% CP and 70% to 75% TDN, plus salt and mineral.

First Call to the Ring: Ref lections of a New Stock Show Mom

I

By Megan Brehm - Ranch House Designs

t’s finally here. The year I’ve long awaited. It’s the year that our daughter will take her first steps into the ring as a junior cattle exhibitor. My husband and I have anxiously awaited this moment for some time, planning ahead through adjusting breeding programs, catching up registration paper work, and dusting off the old Air Express. If you live this life, you understand. So why is it that this doesn’t seem quite possible, that it seems more likely that she should be the wide-eyed toddler, hand locked in ours, strolling the cattle barns of a show, pointing out her favorite “cow,” while we promise “someday you’ll have one just like it.” That someday has arrived, much like the other milestones before it, that somehow don’t seem possible to have passed by so quickly. First birthday. First vacation. First pet. First day of preschool. Then kindergarten. Next second grade…. yes,

second grade. As a mother, the start of kindergarten somehow slipped under my radar without inducing the tears I saw a few other moms brush away. This year second grade was the year it hit me. Our little girl isn’t quite as little anymore. Second graders start riding their bike to school, mowing the lawn, and for some lucky second graders: pull their first heifer into the ring. I remember my first time showing at our little county fair in southeast Nebraska, full of excitement, pride, and wonder. A fire lit in me sometime along the way budding a love for cattle, the business, and the people that hasn’t ceased. Growing up, the passage of one year seemed to take an eternity, while now looking back, it passed in the blink of an eye. Those years were truly some of the very best. From the lifelong friendships made along the way, the laughs and tears, and Grand Champions all the way down the line: the experiences and lifelessons learned seem endless.

This year as we begin to prepare Lauren’s heifers and steer for the upcoming show season, a myriad of emotions comes flooding back to this mama. This year she’ll be the little girl with the big heifer walking into the ring. I hope that a fire lights in her and burns strong. Already in preparation for the upcoming year, I’ve caught myself setting back in awe of the beauty this lifestyle entails. I’ve seen our little girl stepping up to big girl responsibilities in the barn. Happy to help, step up, and learn as much as she can. She’s also so happy to pass on her passion to her little sister and brother eager to be following right in her footsteps. To be honest, maybe this year is a little scary as a mom. Maybe I’m afraid of how fast these

years will pass, much like mine before it. But I do know one thing; it will be worth it. As a mother, I’ve enjoyed every opportunity to chat with parents of older kids nearing the end of their show cattle journey. These parents spell it out perfectly, “how great of an opportunity this has been for their kids,” “how much their kids have grown personally,” or “how its paying off in college, in careers,” and most importantly, in life. And at the end of the day, really what more could you ever want for your children? So even as I write this piece brushing off the “my baby is growing up” jitters, I am so thankful to be able to pass on this wonderful lifestyle to her and all of the fantastic opportunities it provides.
