Once again we welcome you to the annual PBF, organised and run by the Peterborough & District branch of CAMRA – The Campaign for Real Ale. The original layout has been retained so visitors can walk all the way around the marquees, to see the vast range of ales, cider and wines that are available. Our beer hunters have spent the last few weeks sourcing beers from far and wide for your enjoyment. This year we have at least sixty (60) new brewery beers available. Again the ‘singles bar’ will have a range of beers that will only be on sale for a limited time as there is only one cask of each one, so when it’s gone it’s gone! With the 350 real ales there are a great range of ciders, bottled beers from overseas and the popular country wines. The Escape Bar sells soft drinks, crisps, sweets and ice cream, as well as cigarettes. To feed the hungry we have our usual range of food vendors outside the marquees. From traditional fish and chips to oriental delights, burgers, pies, toasties, French crepes and olives. There should be something to please most of you. Commemorative half pint and pint glasses lined and bearing this year’s festival logo are on hire or to keep. Remember you get a full pint up to the line marked on the glass. Please take care of your glass and don’t leave it lying around. There are people who ‘collect’ empty glasses and attempt to cash them in. Please note the glasses stand closes promptly at half an hour after time has been called. So if you want a refund on your glass make sure you get there before they close. Again we have a full programme of live music for your entertainment. All the bands are featured in this programme, with a return of Think Floyd as our Saturday headline band. A new form of music © John Moore photography

enthusiasts appear on Friday afternoon. The Peterborough Ukulele Band is just a bunch of regulars from The Palmerston Arms pub in Woodston who formed up for some fun. They even have one of our Bar Managers playing! Got to be a giggle. This time last year we were persuading as many visitors as we could, to sign CAMRA’s petition for the Chancellor to scrap the Beer Duty Escalator due to the continuing damage it was doing to the pub trade. Thanks to your support and our heavily publicised campaign including a massive turnout to lobby our MPs at Westminster, we succeeded in getting the Escalator scrapped. It must be one of the most successful campaigns CAMRA have organised. In spite of the duty on beer not rising this year our pub trade licensees continue to struggle. Competition remains from the ‘offies’ and supermarkets, supplying the take home brigade rather than drink in the pub. We have had one success locally in The Ploughman at Werrington being saved from demolition by Tesco’s. This is a typical community pub that has the support of the locals and would have been a great loss to the area. We hope you enjoy your visit to this year’s festival and give our hard working staff some credit for doing a good job. Remember all our staff is unpaid volunteers from our local and countrywide branches of CAMRA. Please be patient during busy periods if waiting to get served. If you would like to become part of this great organisation why not join up at the Membership stand. It costs very little! Cheers

FESTIVAL INFORMATION

HAVE FUN AT THE FESTIVAL

We all hope that your visit to the Beer Festival this year will be a memorable one. Remember without your support the festival could not take place, and the chance to sample some of the excellent brews on offer would be lost. Please try and imagine the festival marquees as one giant pub. Of course, as with all pubs, there are certain rules we have to comply with. The times of opening are published in the programme and the marquees are completely non-smoking. Accompanied children are allowed in the bar marquees but please keep them away from the bar serveries. And remember that it is against the law to drink alcohol on site if you are under 18. You will need to buy a glass before you start. If it gets too sticky, or you want to change glass sizes, just take it back to the glasses counter and exchange it. The Beer Festival serves all beer, cider and wine in oversized glasses with government stamped line measured markings to ensure that you, the customer, get a full measure in your glass. Please be careful if you put your glass down on a table, on the grass, or anywhere that it could be knocked over and broken. If such an event does occur, please inform a member of staff or security that there is broken glass. On no account attempt to pick up the pieces yourself. We have staff with the proper equipment Š John Moore photography

to retrieve it safely. Do not grind it into the grass! Other events take place on this site after we have finished. Be careful not to leave your glass unattended. Remember – You paid for it! To ensure you enjoy the festival at all times we advise you to start off with some light beers, say a mild or low gravity ale, then on to something a bit stronger. Starting off with the strongest beers on the menu means your taste buds get no chance to enjoy the different flavours that the various brews offer. As with any other pub we do have the right to eject any person who we feel is a threat to other customers or our staff. Thankfully this is a very rare occurrence. Also remember that, just like other pubs, you are not allowed to drink your own alcohol on site and illegal drugs are totally banned and their use will result in a call to the police. Finally let me remind you of the dedicated staff who are serving you at the festival. Every one of them is an unpaid volunteer, so please be patient at busy times. The person serving you may well have been on duty for the best part of the day, or the whole week and are naturally starting to flag a bit! You can help these people by joining CAMRA and offering to help run the festival. Cheers! Enjoy the Festival Peterborough Beer Festival 2013 07

I

t’s that time of year again, so welcome to the Entertainment Listing for the 36th Peterborough Beer Festival. I seem to say this every year, but the fact is that more and more bands are keen to show off their wares at the PBF and unfortunately we have only nine evening slots in which we endeavour to provide an eclectic mix of talented songwriters, along with a couple of your more well known local favourites. I hope there’s something to please everyone. Saturday again sees us open ALL day with live entertainment in the main band marquee throughout the afternoon. Do come along and support this predominantly younger talent from around and about the local area. Once again, my sincere thanks to everyone who has contacted me over the last 12 months 10 Peterborough Beer Festival 2013

or so requesting a gig at the Beer Fest. Persistence does work, but please bear in mind that we will only ever have two or three covers/tribute bands a year and good original material will always be the preferred choice. Enough of my ramblings do come along to support and appreciate this impressive range of talent playing on the big Beer Fest stage in a friendly atmosphere with “something for everyone” and a fantastic finale on Saturday night as we close for 2013 with internationally renowned Think Floyd.

WEDNESDAY 21st AUGUST

On Stage Approx 8:15 - 9:15 and 9:45 - 10:45

A bunch of musicians from the Cambridge areas who just love to play great, honest blues and rock music. The name Mojo Triangle came from an old saying that “all the best music came from a mojo triangle between New Orleans, Memphis and Nashville”. Well that spirit has been transported to the deep Ouse Valley delta! Originally meeting at the Willingham Jam Club, they have played in various one off bands, mainly together, sometimes not, but with a great circuit of music pubs, charity events and festivals their interpretation of classic blues and rock goes down a treat. www.mojotriangle.co.uk.

The Librarians THURSDAY 22nd AUGUST

On Stage Approx 7:30 - 9:00 The Librarians are three brothers, born to a village idiot and his horse. They began playing instruments at their local infant school and have somewhat progressed since then.

A massively popular choice for weddings and functions, COTR also have a dedicated fan base in their hometown of Peterborough that comes from almost a decade on the local scene. Their repertoire is expansive, covering the likes of The Who, Elvis, Foo Fighters, Fleetwood Mac and even a Dolly Parton track to name but a few. Always an energetic, entertaining and exciting show. www.childrenoftherev.com

The Mistreated Friday 23rd August

On Stage Approx 7:30 – 9 :00 The Mistreated created such a positive reaction following their Saturday afternoon set last year that we just had to have them back for an evening slot. They are a four-piece classic rock covers band based in Cambridgeshire. Fronted by the powerful vocals of Doc, The Mistreated present well-known rock songs from the '70s, '80s and '90s to the present day, delivering the highest standard of

cooper and escape bar

COOPER We are fortunate once again to have a visit from T & R Theakston’s master cooper, Jonathan Manby. T & R Theakston are one of the few British brewers who still employ a full-time cooper. Although their beers are no longer delivered in oak casks some of their beers are matured in the wood. Jonathan was trained by master brewer and cooper, Clive Hollis, and is one of the few remaining coopers in the country. Everyone who has watched Jonathan’s demonstration of his craft has enjoyed watching him create casks with tools that haven’t changed in centuries. If you didn’t catch it last year, then make sure that you do not miss the chance to observe and marvel at his skill in the north tent on Tuesday.

BEER LIST! The Singles Bar Back by popular demand. Regular attendees to Peterborough Beer Festival may well have visited The Singles Bar last year. Apologies to anyone who may have had the wrong idea about what a singles bar is.

can even have a chat with the brewer as he is on the cellar team on bar 1. Even very well known brewers like Blue Monkey have a couple of oneoffs for us. If you like something a bit stronger, there will be an 8%er from Church End or a 7% collaboration from Bexar County and Huddersfield’s Hand Drawn Monkey. I believe it may be called Huddersfield 0 Peterborough 3. Another interesting one will be Double Dog from Elgoods at 6.5%.

The Singles Bar will be even bigger and better this year with a great range of one-off beers, most of which will never be seen again, indeed a few of this years beers will never have been seen before. There should be 40 plus beers available and this year we have a double stillage so most of the singles beers will be on right from the start. We have 2 beers from a new brewery called Beerd from Bristol and when they are gone you won’t see them again. There’s one from Bitches at Brodies which is so rare we have no details about it. There will be a couple from Peterborough’s newest brewery Bexar County and you

We have weirdly named ones too such as Buzz Lightbeer, Sherunkel, Bidazzler and Old Engine Oil. There will also be a couple from Norfocopia who make unfined and unhopped beers from birch sap, elder and gorse, all at 6%.so something for everyone really. CAMRA LocAle is an accreditation scheme to promote pubs that sell locally brewed real ales. The Scheme was started in 2007 by the Nottingham Branch of CAMRA following on their success the Peterborough Branch scheme was created in April 2009. Currently we have 111 pubs and clubs who have joined the scheme. Each CAMRA Branch participating in the scheme decides on what they think is an appropriate local distance for their area, here in Peterborough it was decided to adopt 30 miles as the distance required between pub or 46 Peterborough Beer Festival 2013

Here at the Peterborough Beer Festival we have many local breweries beers on sale so have a good look around today and enjoy Clubs and pubs joining the scheme must agree to endeavour to ensure that at least one locally brewed real ale is on sale at all times. So next time you visit your local check to see if you think any beers on sale could be locally brewed, if the pub should be in the scheme. Its easy to join and its free. cider and perry list

CIDER & PERRY BAR

W

elcome to the cider and perry bar. Last year we had plenty of positive feedback in favour of the old festival layout, so it is retained this year. All the ciders and perries sold here are ‘real’ in the sense that they consist of nothing but fermented apple and fermented pear juice respectively. Ciders and perries flavoured with other fruit are not considered ‘real’ according to CAMRA’s definition, so I’m afraid you will not find them on this bar. Furthermore they are not artificially carbonated or served under gas pressure. This means that the majority of the ciders are still, although some will sparkle a little due to the residual fermentation in the casks. Because of this residual fermentation ciders and perries may be crystal clear, hazy or even cloudy but should not look like pea soup! Many of the ciders and perries come from the traditional cider making areas in the West Country where apple and pear varieties are grown specifically for cider / perry making. Where cider is made elsewhere in the country it is usually made from a judicious blend of cookers and eaters. Since we like to source cider locally where possible we have a good range of these ciders at the festival. The range of styles and flavours is huge, and the bar staff will be happy to give small tastes and discuss the drinks with you provided the bar is not too busy. You will find that most real ciders and perries lie in the range 5.5% to 8% A.B.V. simply because that is what a 60 Peterborough Beer Festival 2013

natural fermentation of 100% fruit juice produces. Some of them don’t taste their strength, so beware! We are also selling a range of non-alcoholic apple juices on the bar. Again, these are all 100% juice and are usually produced from a single apple variety; we expect to have Cox, Discovery, Bramley and others. The tub labels should tell most of what you need to know when ordering. Green labels are cider and yellow labels are perry. Most ciders / perries are made from a blend of apple / pear varieties; where a single variety has been used this is on the tub label. All the ciders and perries have been tasted prior to the festival for quality control and they have been categorized as Very Dry, Dry, Medium Dry, Medium, Medium Sweet, Sweet or Very Sweet, again this is on the label. Admittedly this is a bit subjective and you may disagree with us, but it is a useful starting point. Any special flavours, e.g. use of oak casks will be noted on the labels. That is more than enough introduction, time to start drinking. Wassail!

beer styles

ALL ABOUT

THE BEER understood in the 18th century. The selection of yeast will often give a brewer’s beers a common flavour, and many breweries will guard their particular yeast strain very carefully. Yeast also produces the alcohol in the drink from sugars. These sugars mostly come from malted barley. The maltster allows the barley to just begin to germinate before stopping the process using heat. This makes the grain softer and easier to mill, and starts the process of turning starch into sugar.

The origins of beer can be traced back at least 6,000 years, to when the ancient Egyptians and Sumerians began to grow cereals. The drink we would recognise today started to appear in 7th century Bavaria, when hops were first used. The hop was first seen in Britain in the 14th century, in a drink brought over from Germany and the Low Countries. Beer contained hops, whereas ale remained unhopped, and ale and beer brewers would remain entirely separate until the 17th century. However, after three centuries the unhopped variety had been all but wiped out. With very few exceptions all beer brewed today contains hops in some form. The modern usages of the words ale and beer are rather different. Beer refers to nearly every alcoholic drink made with malt and hops. Ale normally refers to beers fermented with particular types of yeast – so called ‘top fermenting’ varieties. Hops provide the bitterness and many of the other flavours and aromas in beer. Further flavours come from the yeast. Yeast is a single-celled organism that only began to be

Other cereals (both malted and unmalted) may be used in some beers. Brewing sugars are used by some brewers and other flavourings, spices and even fruit may be added. As well as sugars, malts also provide many of the flavours in beer, such as roasted and caramel notes. The colour of a beer is almost entirely dependent on the variety and amount of malts used. What is real ale? Real ale is a beer brewed from traditional ingredients, matured by fermentation in the container from which it is dispensed, and served without the use of additional gas. It is described as ‘living’ as it continues to ferment in the cask, developing its flavour as it matures, ready to be poured into your glass. Real ale is also known as ‘cask-conditioned beer’, ‘real cask ale’, ‘real beer’ and ‘naturally conditioned beer’. The term ‘real ale’ and the above definition were coined by CAMRA in the early 1970s. How can I tell if it’s real ale? Real ale is full of flavour with a light natural carbonation produced by the fermentation that has occurred in the cask. A real ale should be served at cellar temperature (11–14°C) so that

beer styles continued the flavour of the beer can be best appreciated. You can recognise real ale in a pub as it is usually served using a hand pump, although a number of pubs sell the beer straight from the cask using nothing but gravity – like at this festival. What is the difference between ale and lager? Real ale is produced by ‘top fermentation’ at temperatures of up to 22°C, which produces the rich variety of flavours. After primary fermentation the ale is allowed to mature at 11–14°C in a cask where a slow secondary fermentation occurs. Lager is produced by bottom fermentation at lower temperatures (6–14°C). It is then conditioned for several weeks or months at close to freezing, during which time the lager matures. Traditionally, lager style beers were brewed during the cooler winter months and then stored in cool cellars throughout the summer. Indeed, lager is the German word for store. However, most mass-produced UK lagers are matured for less than a week and do poor service to the name. A few UK brewers produce a real lager – BlackBar Bert’s Lager at this festival being one example. What is ‘craft beer’? The term craft beer has received a great deal of press in recent years. As yet there’s no real definition for the term - rather one knows it when one sees it. Much real ale is craft beer; some craft beer is dispensed from kegs. Craft beer has its origins in the US microbrewery world – our foreign beer bar has some fine examples from that side of the Atlantic. Beer Styles Ale-style beers are often broken down further into various styles, although many beers are hard to fit in to one of these categories. We’ve chosen a few examples for a few common styles. Milds are low in bitterness and may be dark or light. Although generally of a lower strength (below 4%) they can also be strong.

beer styles continued Bitter is the most common beer style, usually brown, tawny, copper or amber coloured with a medium to strong bitterness. Light to medium malt character may be present. Bitters vary in strength from around 3.5% to nearer 6%. Recently some brewers have produced beers below 3%, which often have a remarkable depth of flavour. Golden Ales first appeared in the 1980s. These are pale amber, gold, yellow or straw coloured beers with light to strong bitterness and a strong hop character that creates a refreshing taste. The strength is generally less than 5.5%.

appearance of “Black IPAs has confused many, since they are definitely not pale. Porters and Stouts are complex in flavour and typically black or dark brown. The darkness comes from the use of dark malts. These full bodied beers generally have a pronounced bitter finish. Historically a stout would have been any stronger beer, but the term evolved to mean a strong porter beer. In modern usage, the two terms are used almost interchangeably, although stouts tend to be less sweet than porters. They are usually 4–8% in strength, although some go higher.

India Pale Ale (IPA) originally appeared in the early 19th century. First brewed in London and Burton-on-Trent for the colonial market, IPAs were strong in alcohol and high in hops: the preservative character of the hops helped to keep the beers in good condition during long sea journeys. Look for juicy malt, citrus fruit and a big spicy, peppery bitter hop character, with strengths of 5% to much more. The recent

pubs around peterborough

Peterborough Pubs The Peterborough Beer Festival is upon us and the choice of ales from around the country is simply staggering. Of course, the beer fest isn’t open all the time so you might want to try a few of our local pubs when we’re all taking a siesta between sessions! For those of you new to the city and the festival, Peterborough provides a variety of venues in which to drink real ale. From a quiet village pub just 25 minutes walk from the festival to Europe’s largest brew pub, from a pub specialising in ales straight from the cask to a 1930's back street boozer known for the quality and variety of its ale. Peterborough has it all! We shall divide the pubs into north and south of the river to make direction finding easier. To start with the festival is on the north bank of the Nene. For those of you who carry technology we'll include the postcode so you can navigate more easily.

SOUTH OF THE RIVER The Woolpack, North St, Stanground, PE2 8HR This is the closest you can get to a village pub in the city. Situated in the ancient village of Stanground just south of the Nene, the Woolpack provides a bit of peace and tranquillity in a mad mad world. The pub will provide 4 beers during the festival which will be Wherry and Landlord with 2 guest ales. The pub is open all day every day. Food is served but times vary so call the pub to find out details. We wouldn’t want you to trek half a mile in search of food and only find pork scratchings, although it’s worth the walk for the nice beer anyway. The beer garden at the rear of the pub

backs onto the old course of the river Nene and if you just happen to own a boat and you've brought it with you, you can park it at the bottom of the garden. Phone number 01733 753544 Charters, River Nene, PE1 1EH. 01733 315700 Just south of the river (on the river really) you will find Charters. This large converted grain barge will provide the easiest and most convenient point to try more ales. Although, as it’s the closest to the fest it might get a bit busy during 'festival down times'. Usually about a dozen ales on offer with a beer garden and marquee to relax under. The restaurant on the top deck is called East and will cater for those in need of the exotic. The Cherry Tree, 9 Oundle Rd, PE2 9PB. 01733 703495 The Cherry Tree is known as one of Peterborough's live music venues and has seen a wealth of talent play here. You will find at least 4 ales on offer, one or two will probably be local ones. Food available. Swiss Cottage, Grove St, PE2 9AG (off Oundle Rd) The ‘Swiss’ is a pub with an Irish flavour but with a difference, in as much as not all the sales are Guinness related. The standard offering is Rooster’s Yankee which is unusual for this area. There are usually at least a couple of handpumps in use and the choice tends towards local ales with Tydd Steam and Digfield being regulars. No food but they’re open all day and they have a pool table. Phone number 01733 568734

pubs around peterborough The Palmerston Arms, 82 Oundle Road, PE2 9PA After a short interlude of uncertainty we are pleased to say that the 'Palmy' has now been reinstated as one of the premier real ale pubs in the city. Run by local man, Ian Benton the pub offers a fine array of ales straight from the cask from the cellar. Phone number 01733 565865 Coalheavers Arms, Park St, PE2 9BH The Coalheavers Arms is one of the city's success stories. During the festival the pub will probably have 8 or so beers on, some of which will be by Milton of Cambridge. A super pub with a pleasant beer garden known everywhere for their great beer festivals. One of local CAMRA's favourite pubs which will no doubt be used as the 'Festival Tap' during the building of the festival! No hot food but home made scotch eggs of exotic and unusual varieties on sale. Open Tuesday onwards at midday during the festival. Phone number 01733 565664

NORTH OF THE RIVER AND THE CITY CENTRE The Beehive, 62 Albert Place, PE1 1DD A popular pub known for its excellent food. The 'House' ales here are made by local brewery, Castor Ales. Their other beers can include London Pride, Blackfriars and Abbey. Unfortunately the pub is having builders in to rearrange a few things and will be closed until Friday evening of the festival. Normal opening from then on so you can still enjoy the pub all day Saturday. Food until 9.30pm. Phone number 01733 310600 The Draper's Arms, 29-31 Cowgate, PE1 1LZ One of the closest pubs to the railway station offering the usual JD Wetherspoons fare. Opens early for breakfast. 01733 847570 Ostrich, 17 North Street, PE1 2RA. Superbly refurbished, the Ostrich offers a selection of 5 ales most of which are local to the area.

Phone number 01733 319745 The Solstice, Northminster Rd, PE1 1YN A large pub north of Peterborough market offering 3 ales some of which are beers from small breweries. Large screens for sporting events are available. Food available. Phone number 01733 560231 www.thesolstice.co.uk The Hand & Heart, 12 Highbury Street, PE1 3BE Rebuilt in the 1930's the 'Hand' is a pub which has remained at the forefront of real ale excellence for the last several years. Our landlord Bram and his good lady Sue have ensured that all of the beers served over the bar are in perfect condition. The

range is ever changing and the pub now sports regular beer festivals with ales to keep any self respecting beer spotter occupied for some considerable time. The pub was awarded a Gold Award from Peterborough CAMRA and it was Cambridgeshire Pub of the Year for 2010. Put simply, if you're in Peterborough you need to visit the pub. To get to the pub you can use the local bus service (Citi 1) which will drop you off within a hundred yards of the pub (look for the motor bike shop on your left just after the traffic lights - Highbury St is opposite). Phone number 01733 564653. The Crown, 749 Lincoln Rd PE1 3HD Completly refurbished by Baxter and King Construction a couple of years ago, this is a gem of a pub. The landlord John Laurence is a current CAMRA Branch Gold Award winner and is always putting on offers and specials for beer enthusiasts and has 4 real ales and a real cider available at all times. Staying on the Citi 1 bus route those who wish to explore further out of town to the Werrington suburb would be rewarded by visiting... The Ploughman, Werrington Centre PE4 6NA The landlord, Andy Simmonds has been in the local media lately campaigning to save his pub from being demolished by Tesco for a car park. With the aid of CAMRA and massive support from the local community Andy has won his battle for the pub. The Ploughman is also a current Gold Award winner and with at least eight real ales on it’s well worth a visit.

THE RNLI

IS THE CHARITY THAT SAVES LIVES AT SEA RNLI, 100’s of school children will be educated on water safety by the RNLI and our flood rescue team are on 24/7 standby. Our last acquisition, PBF IV stationed quite locally at Skegness, and used alongside the all-weather “Mersey” class soon to be replaced with a new state of the art Shannon class, (still under development at the time of writing), has had 38 shouts in the 12 months to July 2013, with 26 persons rescued. We have invited some of the crew to come over to the Festival this year, although, falling as it does, in the middle of the holiday season, they Yes folks, welcome to the Beer Festival! It doesn’t seem a year ago, but once again we are all preparing for 5 days of fun and frolics for the customers, and hard work and mayhem behind the scenes! The weather at the time of writing is glorious, temperature in my garden reading 940F. and that’s in the shade! Lets all hope that it is this good in 5 weeks when Claire and I will be opening the gates to let you all in.

As you are all aware, we, that is to say the RNLI volunteers, have been collecting here for many years now, and your donations have enabled us to purchase, equip and run no less than 4 lifeboats, 3 “D” class and 1 “Atlantic 85 class”. No mean feat when you consider the costs involved. A Fully kitted out “D” class costs £ 39,000, and the Atlantic 85 £204,000! Every penny of which, plus the running costs comes from people just like you, the “Chuck it in the bucket” brigade, not one penny comes from Government sources, so, you can feel justly proud and perhaps not a little smug! Did you know, 22 persons will be rescued today by the

may be a little busy. Skegness Lifeboat Station is what is known as an “Explore Station”. Explore stations offer the best visitor experience. With free access, you can go inside and look around the station, see the lifeboats and, in most cases,

festival charity pre-book a tour. They are normally open all year and have an RNLI gift shop. For more details visit: www.rnliskegness.org.uk. (If you want to keep an eye on your lifeboat, download the desktop pager from: http://rnli.org/howtosupportus/ otherwaystohelp/digital-extras/ Pages/Desktop-pager-signup.aspx) Feel free to come over and have a chat with us, we are quite happy to show off our total ignorance of all things nautical, and are more than willing to help out our patrons by lightening the burdens which weigh down their pockets on the journey home. Indeed we are even so selfless as to aid our bretheren and sisteren, who are in need of directions home asking nothing in return. (Oh go on then, just a half!).

On a more serious note, for those of you who are visiting the Festival by boat, the moorings next to the Festival are available for overnight stays, so enjoy yourselves, but remember excess booze, and boating, are not good bedfellows. Last year we collected £ 8031.27, and, weather permitting, we hope to improve on that this year. We now have in our coffers the princely sum of £ 17,981.75, which will be going to fund, hopefully, a local lifeguard station, or similar (with Peterborough Beer Festival’s name on it of course!) More details on this at a later date. To ALL of you, our thanks in advance, drink sensibly and enjoy the fantastic sunshine we will be having for the whole week. If my prediction is wrong feel free to come over and shout…….. at Claire (I cry easily) Martyn Edgar (Press and Box Secretary) RNLI Peterborough.

THANK YOU PETERBOROUGH BEER FESTIVAL II I write in my capacity as Lifeboat Operations Manager at The Mumbles Lifeboat Station to inform you that in August 2013 Inshore LifeboatD-623, Peterborough Beer Festival II, will reach the end of her operational life. In July 2004 The Mumbles Lifeboat Station was the proud recipient of Peterborough Beer Festival II and since that time, at the point of writing, she has launched on service 335 times, helped 423 people in difficulty and been credited with saving 6 lives. Throughout her service she has been the workhorse of the Station and has made a huge contribution to maritime safety in the Swansea area. It will be with great sadness that we wave her off.

On behalf of everyone associated with The Mumbles Lifeboat Station I thank the Peterborough Beer Festival for the wonderful gift that was Peterborough Beer Festival II. I know you continue to support the RNLI and we are very grateful for this ongoing commitment. Yours Aye Timothy A Conway Lifeboat Operations Manager The Mumbles Lifeboat Station
