The International Development Research Council IDRC Cttawa, will be familiar to most readers as the agency that funded the bibliography of Tropical Apiculture compiled by Dr. Eva Crane and the staff at IPPA, and published in 1972. Over 400 institutions in 95 developing countries have requested this Bibliography and it has been sent to them free of charge, thanks to IDRC. Some institutions also applied for photocopies of articles, and for one or more of the 14 Satellite Bibliographies. IPFA still has a limited number of the 24 Parts of the Bibliography for free distribution, and both the Bibliography and the Satellite Bibliographies can be purchased.

Details can be supplied on application.

In budgeting for photocopies in the ODA funding in connection with my appointment, the demand was underestimated. We have applied successfully to ODA for an extension of their allocation for photocopies, so we are still able to supply them, but each applicant shall be limited to 40 copied pages in total.

IBRA knows very well the waste of effort and reserves brought about by lack of information. Beekeepers in developing countries are so often thwarted because they do not know where to get specific equipment - for instance queen excluders or a foundation press to suit their local bees. They may need contacts in different countries through «whom they might sell honey or beeswax. Teachers want to now about useful books and educational aids. And a great many young beekeepers want to attend a training course, and may need funds in order to do so.

In April a new grant was awarded by IDPS to IPRA, to prepare and distri-~ bute (on the same lines as ROTA) a series of leaflets on Source Materials for Aviculture.

The - subjects are:

SAM 1 Suppliers of beekeeping equipment

SAM 2 Marketing bee products

SAM 3 Planting for bees

SAM 4 Opportunities for training

SAM 6 Applying for grant-aid

SAM 5 Sources of voluntary workers

54M 7 Applying for information

SAM 8 Reference books

SAM 9 Educational aids

SAM 10 Writing about apiculture

These leaflets should be available early next year. IBRA is in contact with institutions that provide training in Australia, Canada, Egypt, France, German Federal Republic, India, Israel, Kenya, Romania, South Africa, Tanzania, UK and USA. We urgently need addresses in other countries that can provide training for students from developing countries. Please send me any information you have.
