Honey as a source of new medicine

The production of drugs through the nectar of transgenic plants is aimed for by the CPRO-DLO, an institution for plant breeding in The Netherlands. Nectar contains an antibacterial/antifungal protein, which is left untouched during the bee's manufacture of honey. Introduction of a new gene close to this 'Protein locus' might result in the co-production of a new protein ( for example yellow fever vaccine), along with the original one. The two proteins could be easily separated from the 'enriched' honey that bees would keep bringing home.
