Assignments

Assignments in this course can be divided into weekly assignments, 1 or 2-time assignments, and exams. Below you'll find description of all the types of assignments you'll do in this class. Group Presentations In pairs or trios, prepare a 5-10 minute presentation (THATS MAX. 10 minutes) in English on a topic thats anything Dutch and Netherlands related. You can pick a topic related to one of the course themes or another subject. Since its only 5-10 minutes, keep it clear and concise. Tools: powerpoint, photos, audio, video, theatrical demonstration, a simple oral presentation, singing and music instruments. Use your imagination and skills. Schedule: pick a date on the form distributed during class and write your names on that date. Possible Presentation Subjects (other than the course themes): Dutch works: Civil and water engineering Dutch Design: fashion, industrial design, art, independent game design Dutch Customs & Etiquette Dutch Cuisine & Drinks Iconic Dutch products Media, Music , Movies Geography, urban development History, politics, the weather Society, Euthanasia, abortus Sample 1: A Dutch song Your group picks one song, practices and performs it for the group (thats about 3 minutes). The rest of the time, tell us what its about and who the original artist is and the contribution of this artist to the Dutch music industry. Sample 2: Creating the Dubai Palm Tree islands With a video or few photos of the Palm Tree Islands, say something about the technology and the Belgian-Dutch contractors who created them. Sample 3: Visiting the Dutch With a sketch show how it’s like to ring the doorbell and visit with a Dutch family. Sample 4: A news article in Dutch Find a short 2-3 paragraph article on a Dutch online news site. Tell us what its about and give us some background on that topic. Use the online dictionary for this assignment.

TELL US ABOUT YOU As part of the final exam, you'll tell us in Dutch in a 5 minute oration who you are, what you do and what you love and spend time doing. Prepare answers to simple questions of why, how, where, when, etc that instructors or the group will ask you during the your presentation. SEND AN (E)CARD Two times this course, you be asked as home-work to send a card written in Dutch to a fictive character. You will get the type of person and occasion during class. You can use an online ecard service or a real paper card. Plus points for those who use ‘Dutch cards or a Dutch ecard service’. During the exam, you'll write a greeting card for a fictive character and occasion. PRACTICE PRONUNCIATION Practice the pronunciation of words and phrases using the materials and audio clips every week. FLASH CARDS: Memorize To help you memorize vocabulary, words are put on digital flash cards on Cram.com. You'll find the link to each set of flashcards under each Lesson heading on the MATERIALS page of this site. FLASH CARDS: GROUP ASSIGNMENT Also, the group presenting one week write down extra vocabulary the week before their presentation. This is done during a particular exercise and will be announced during class. They write down the words, translate them and put them up on the flashcards on cram.com. During class the next week, the group very quickly present the words using Cram (or excel). READING Every few lessons, students will get a short piece to read and answer questions on to assess their understanding of the language. During the exam, you will get a text to read. EXERCISES & ROLEPLAY In this course, words, phrases and information is integrated into exercises and role-play games which allow students to interactively absorb and use their newly found information.
