Beauty myths BUSTED! You might be guilty of swearing by these rules in the past and whilst some are wise truths, we are also suckers for believing in wild beauty myths passed down through the generations. But fear not we have dug deep to separate 6 common beauty tales from fact to fiction.
True Rinsing your hair with beer will make it thicker As absurd as it sounds this is actually true! So go ahead and use room-temperature beer as a final rinse to your hair. Your hair will not only appear thicker, it will also give your hair more volume as the beer builds up the circumference of the hair shaft. Note: you may smell like the pub after so perhaps a thickening shampoo with hops in it is a better alternative.
True Wearing nail polish all the time will make your nails yellow. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but this is partly true. Nails are porous which results in them absorbing the pigment in polishes causing the nails to stain, especially with darker colours like reds as they have more pigments. The trick is to make sure you use a base coat, this creates a barrier between the nail and the nail polish, helping prevent discolouration.

False White spots on nails are due to less calcium You know when you’re admiring your nails and then you notice those annoying white spots on your nail? This isn’t due to lack of calcium in your body. As your nail grows, fat cells are pushed up–until they rupture pushing out a liquid called cysteine. Sometimes they don’t rupture so the white spots you see are the cystene. So it doesn’t matter how much milk and cheese you consume, you just have to wait until it grows out.
False
Pull a grey hair and seven more appear Pulling out one grey hair has no effect on other hair follicles as not only is it physically impossible to increase the number of follicles you have on your head but research suggests ripping a hair out by its root can actually lead to regrowth that does not lie flat. So feel free to pull out those first signs of old age. This one’s an old wives tale!
True & False
Chocolate gives you spots Yum how great is chocolate!? It’s not so great for your body if you have too much. Whilst chocolate does not directly promote acne or blemishes, too much however can increase blood sugar levels which in turn effects the function of sebaceous glands in our body, potentially aggravating acne. So indulge in that bag of Malteasers but remember enjoy in moderation.
False
Never use oily products on oily skin Never put oil on oil right? Wrong! Oil-prone skin needs hydration too and adding oil can actually help produce less oil in the longrun. If you use a cleanser that removes all your natural oils, the skin can overcompensate and in fact produce more oil. So adding good natural oil to your regime can do wonders for your oily skin. Spidery lashes & dewy skin
Layer on the mascara until the lashes start to clump together and apply a shimmery highlighter on the top of the cheek bones to finish off the look.
WHAT’S HOT: SPRING/SUMMER MAKE-UP TRENDS Make up by Amy Whinston
Bold lips & bronzed skin
Sweep a warm brown eyeshadow across the lid and apply bronzer around the sides of the face . Finish off with a bold pop of colour on the lips.
90s grunge & glossy lips
Smudge black eyeliner across the lid and under the lower lashline. Use black eyeshadow to lock the pencil into place and blend out to create that ‘worn in’ look. Finish off with clear lipgloss.
Blue smoky eye & nude lip
Start off by pressing a bright blue eyeshadow onto the lid. Blend a mixture of dark blue and black eyeshadow into the crease and take this onto the lower lash line to create a smoky look. Apply a nude lip to compliment the eyes.

BEAUTY HACKS YOU NEED TO KNOW Tried everything to get rid of them pesky spots? Why not try putting full-fat Greek yoghurt on your spots. Sounds crazy but the yoghurt contains lactic acid, probiotics and fat which all combined can help reduce inflammation and redness. Let it dry for 20 minutes before rinsing off. Broke a nail? Nothing is more frustrating than breaking a nail. Fear not, you can fix it by cutting a nail sized piece of tea bag and place it on top of your base coat/ clear nail varnish whilst it is wet. Trim anything that overhangs, apply another base coat and carry on with your coloured polish.
Nail polish gone all gloopy? Simply put your nail varnish in a cup of boiling water for 2 minutes and this should leave you with a brand new polish. Goodbye crusty old nail varnish. Want to enhance your contour? Put some concealer (a few shades lighter than your skin tone) under where you have contoured and blend in. Finish off with some powder. This should make your contour POP! Covered in bruises? Stubborn bruises that don’t want to budge? Apply some mouthwash with a cotton pad and wipe over your bruise. You will start to notice it disappear.

Applying eyeshadow has definitely upped its game since the good old days where you would swipe one eyeshadow across the lid and be done. It can get rather confusing on where you should apply your eyeshadow and what colour is best to go where. We have created a simple guide to show you exactly what to do!
Lid - This is where you should apply your main colour thar you want to stand out
Brow bone - This is where you should apply a light pale eyeshadow to highlight
Crease - This is where you apply a slightly darker colour than your lid colour to add depth
Inner corner - This is where you should apply a light pale eyeshadow to highlight
Outer corner - This is where you apply a even darker eyeshadow to add depth and smokiness

REAL PEOPLE REAL REVIEWS Garnier micellar cleansing water This product is amazing. It removes all your makeup so quickly without effort. There’s no hard rubbing of your eyes to try and remove it all. It’s a lot lighter and feels nicer to the skin. I’ve got quite sensitive skin so have to be careful what I use, but this is hypo allergic which is great. After using this, it leaves my skin feeling soft, smooth and really light, a different feeling to when I use make-up wipes, it feels a lot more like the make-up remover has removed the make-up that has sunk into my pores, rather than just the make-up on the exterior. I use about 3 pumps each time, one for each eye, and one for the whole of my face. I recommend this to everybody. It’s definitely nicer than using a make-up wipe. I now use this every night to cleanse my face before moisturising. Reviewed by Jodie Perkins

Rimmel are renowned for their collection of vibrantly, show-stopping lipsticks, but even they have outdone themselves with this little beauty. A gorgeously sumptuous dark red lipstick, which glides effortlessly across the lips to give an eye-catching pop of colour. The colour is so rich and so effortless: I cannot find a single fault with it and this is coming from a girl who has had her fair share of make up disappointment! A product like this puts the likes of MAC and Urban Decay to shame and with a pretty price tag of just £6.49 from Superdrug (10% off for valid NUS card holders!) what is not to love!? Another amazing feature of the lipstick is it lasts all night long and never fades. This means no more endless trips to the bathroom on your night outs, as this lipstick has got you sorted. I strongly believe a look is never complete without lipstick and this shade proves that right. It will honestly change how you do your make up and encourage you to be more adventurous with it (as I discovered a few weeks ago) A serious must have in every girl’s cosmetic bag and perfect for every occasion. A 5* product all the way!

How to combat oily skin Having oily skin can be troublesome especially when trying to apply makeup. Many people who suffer with oily skin commonly find it in particular areas of their face such as around the T zone and around the chin area. Making slight changes to your daily routine can help combat your oily skin troubles. Here are some easy suggestions that will eradicate your oily skin problems in no time! 1. Drink plenty of water! Increasing your daily water intake will improve not only the look of your skin but also improve your overall health. Our skin contains plenty of water, and functions as a protective barrier to prevent excess fluid loss. 2. Use Oil free moisturiser for your face Oil-free facial lotions are great for people with naturally oily skin who are prone to breakouts. Oil free lotion delivers all the benefits of a moisturiser without clogging up your pores. 3. Exfoliating twice a week Using a gentle facial scrub is very important to remove the dead skin cells, and if you have oily skin, it is even more important to remove the
dead cells and excessive oil from the skin. The accumulation of dead skin cells and oil in the pores can lead to the development of pimples, acne and other associated problems. Tips for makeup wearers: 4. Using an oil control primer Opting for a mattifying primer or a primer which is powder based before applying makeup will not just control your oily skin but ensure the longevity of your makeup wear. 5. Opt for oil free makeup Use of oil free long-wear products which mattifty the skin are the best option for those with oily skin who find the lasting power of their makeup a common problem. Midday makeup horror, shiny face and enough oil to deep fry in, will be a thing of the past if you add these simple recommendations to your beauty routine. BE FACE 17.

HOW TO:
Smoky eye
The smoky eye look is the most iconic and classic make-up look. It has been recreated many times, but we are all about keeping things simple. Follow these easy steps by our beauty writer, Katie Griffin and you’ll be recreating the smoky eye with confidence.
What you will need:
Primer Highlighter Black, dark grey, silver and white eyeshadow Liquid liner False lashes (optional) Mascara Eyeshadow brush Eye blending brush (optional) Eyelash curler
Step 1: Prime your eye lids using your forefinger. Here we used Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion.
Step 3: Using an eyeshadow brush apply a black eyeshadow to base of the lashes and bringing it out a little to the outside of the eyelid. Here we used L’Oréal SMOKY Velours Noir E5 eyeshadow palette.
Step 5: Sweep the light grey/silver eyeshadow across the lid. All the time blending in with the other shades.
Step 7: Apply liquid eyeliner to your upper lash line and create a wing from the outer corner if you wish. Here we used Superdrug’s B. Dramatic Bold Liquid eyeliner 100.
Step 2: Apply highlighter to your brow bone using your forefinger again. Here we used Sleek Highlighting Palette Precious Metals, Platinum highlighter.
Step 4: Now apply the dark grey eyeshadow to the outside corner of the lid. Making sure you are blending where this shade meets the black.
Step 6: Using an small brush or eyeliner brush apply the black eyeshadow to outer half of the bottom lash line and blend inwards. Here you can vary the thickness depending how dramatic and smoky you want it to look.
Step 8: Curl your lashes using an eyelash curler and apply your mascara. here you can apply fake eyelashes for a more intense look. Here we used Superdrug’s own eyelash curler and Superdrug’s LASH Eyelashes Volume Edition #20. The mascara used is Maybelline Lash Sensational. BE FACE 19.
Organique has been producing natural high quality beauty products for 15 years. Hidden down in the Great Western Arcade in Birmingham, Organique has been serving the West Midlands for only 6 months! We had a chat with Justyna Slusarczyk who has worked for the company since it opened its first store in the UK to ask her what her recommended products are for different skin types.
Dry skin
Their new pumpkin line is perfect for those who suffer from dry skin. The main ingredient in the products is pumpkin pulp which is rich in sugars, vitamins, carotinoids, proteins, minerals and amino acids. When used regularly, it will improve the skin’s hydration and elasticity. Justyna personally recommends the Ultra hydrating cream and the multi-action eye cream. She says the pumpkin line can also be used for oily skin too as oily skin needs to be hydrated which is one of the main reasons why the skin is oily because it is having to produce more oils to hydrate the skin.
Oily skin
Having oily skin can be a constant battle. Justyna says using their anti-acne cream is not only for people who have acne but perfect for oily skin too. It is a light-weight cream gel that cares for skin with acne, seborrhoea and those who have a lot of hyper-pigmentation. The product promises to clean, lighten the complexion and reduce the oil in the T-zone. Justyna also recommends their green clay mask which is rich in minerals and perfectly regulates the secretion of sebum which supports the treatment of acne whilst nourishing and regenerating the skin.
Sensitive skin
It can be hard to find products on the high street that don’t irritate and upset the skin. Justyna pointed out their anti-couperose cream which is specially designed for the care of sensitive skin. The cream is light and absorbs really quickly which makes it perfect to be used under make-up. Goat milk and Lychee line is wonderful for sensitive skin as it contains an Iricalmin complex that gently cools irritated skin so it doesn’t allow the skin to increase in temperature. The preparations from the goat milk and lychee restores comfort and hydration which is exactly what sensitive skin needs.

4 COMMON HAIR MISTAKES YOU ARE MAKING every day Emma Clarke, lead stylist at Cuco hairdressers in Derby has complied a few common hair mistakes that us women make on a regular basis...
1.
Washing your hair everyday can remove many healthy essential oils from the hair and scalp, aim to wash your hair every other day this can help maintain a good balance. A good way to get another day out of your hair is using dry shampoo.
3.
Women who choose to colour their hair at home tend to apply the colour all over, this causes colour to overlap and creates a build-up of unwanted colour. This process makes it harder to change your hair colour and this can also cause damage to the ends. To avoid this when you are refreshing your hair colour you should colour your roots only.
2. People blow dry hair on a high heat, this creates frizz. The best way to stop this is blow drying on a medium heat and medium speed. It will take a little longer but it will help to achieve a smoother finish.
4.
Hair can become very knotty when wet, some women try to brush their hair from the root which can be very damaging. A good way of combing wet hair is to apply conditioner and run your fingers through first, then comb with a wide tooth comb and rinse well. Dry your hair about 70/80% before brushing through with a paddle brush or wide tooth comb again.

KNOW
HOW TO STYLE AND MAintAIN CURLY HAIR
Curly hair may look care free and low-maintenance but that’s far from the truth. A lot of effort has to be put in to keeping the hair feeling and looking healthy. Refining your routine will do the world of difference when it comes to your curls. From one curly hair girl to another, here’s our recommended tips to improve your existing routine.
Conditioning This is a vital part of your routine. Curly and coily hair do not get the natural scalp oils that straight and wavy hair gets, which is why it is important to put this moisture back into the hair to compensate for this. Coconut oil is a great intense conditioner.
Reduce brushing Regularly brushing your curls is a BIG no no. This will only create more frizz in your hair and make your curls less defined. Curly hair is more prone to breakage because the hair cuticle is facing in different directions. The best type of comb to use is a wide-tooth comb starting from the ends to the roots.
Dont rub your hair After you have washed your hair, pat your hair dry with your towel, NEVER rub. It will rough up the cuticle, causing it to look fluffy and potentially leading to breakage.
Serum is your best friend If your hair is feeling a bit brittle and dry, using some hair oil or serum on the ends will seal up the hair follicle plus it will disguise those pesky split ends.
Revive your curls with this concoction When you have curly hair it is better to wash it every other day, by doing this it will preserve the natural oils present in the hair. To keep your curls fresh and defined try mixing half water and half leave in
conditioner in a spray bottle and apply to the ends whilst scrunching. This will keep you going until your next wash.
Avoid sulphates Using shampoo and conditioners with sulphates in can strip the hair of natural oils, causing it to look dry, brittle and unmanageable. Using sulphate free shampoo and conditioner can help retain the essentials hair oils, keeping the colour vibrant and preventing any scalp irritation.
Airdry as often as you can Using heat on curly hair can be very damaging, so if you are able to air-dry your hair then your hair will definitely thank you for it. To ensure it dries without looking crazy, scrunch and twirl your hair with your fingers to create ringlets.
Protect your hair while you sleep Investing in a satin pillow will keep your hair smooth and prevent your hair getting tangled during sleep. Having a cotton pillow can cause friction between the hair and the pillow which can lead to breakage. However, if you don’t fancy changing your pillows, wearing a silk headscarf also does the same job.
