I think it must be down to genetics, the same gene that causes us to enjoy giving up our weekends to play music so that other people can dance and have a good time also makes us love fast moving beams of intense light! Although not ideally suited for every occasion, you can’t beat a good laser effect for creating a wow factor, especially when accompanying energetic music at events for groups of young people. The problem, as we all know, is that venues which allow the smoke or haze effects that are essential for a good laser show are becoming few and far between. This effectively makes redundant the traditional DJ laser effects that create moving lines, circles and squares, which look great in mid-air but rather boring projected on to a surface. Of course there are plenty of laser projectors on the market that generate complex and interesting animated patterns and custom text phrases, but these are way out of the price range of most humble mobile DJs. What’s needed is an affordable laser that can generate geometric patterns for midair effects when smoke can be used, but also conjure up pictures and text for projection on to walls and ceilings at other smokeless functions. Fortunately, what I’m describing isn’t a mythical item, such lasers are readily available and one such unit is the new JB Systems Smooth Scan. There are actually two Smooth Scan lasers available, both share the same casing and operational functionality, but are fitted with different laser diodes. As the name suggests, the Smooth ScanBlue features a powerful 400mw blue laser diode. The Smooth Scan-3, on the other hand, makes use of both a 100mw red and 40mw green laser diode.
