Comments from Incoming President, Larry Miller from the AGM held on May 25, 2011 Dear friends, It is humbling for me to be standing here tonight knowing that our Board of Directors has placed their trust in me to lead our synagogue as President. After all, this is the place where we come for spiritual guidance, where we provide children in our community with a Jewish education, where we celebrate Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, and where we seek comfort in times of crisis and need. What a huge challenge and privilege it will be for me to work with our many volunteers and professional staff to ensure Beit Rayim is here for you. For me, my volunteer work at our synagogue is something more than just a hobby or the giving of charity. I have seen it as an opportunity to do sacred work. Sacred work is making sure we have a sanctuary to celebrate Shabbat and all the Yom Tovim. Sacred work is making sure we can continue to provide our children with a Jewish education. Sacred work is making sure that we have quality Jewish programs to learn from, and that all of those things, can be accessed without causing personal financial hardship. Sacred work can have a hefty price tag. As President, it is my responsibility to ensure that we provide what our members are expecting, and to do that within budget. We must allocate their hard earned money carefully, ensuring that bills get paid and that our employees and volunteers are treated fairly and with respect at all times. What a worthwhile challenge! This is clearly a job for more than one person. I applaud the efforts of all the Directors and Management Team members that I have worked with during the past few years. We are fortunate to have a core of extremely hard working volunteers who invest a great deal of their own time to the betterment of our Congregation We will be voting tonight on a resolution to formally create the position of Chairperson. For the past several months Shelley Isenberg has been acting in this capacity. By having a Chairperson taking charge of the Board, this will permit me, as President, to focus on the management and operational issues most directly impacting our members. Our Management Team, who I now have the privilege to oversee, is comprised of several hard working and talented individuals who are passionately committed to our organization’s success. I hope to find new people to assist in other areas where we currently have vacancies such as Membership and Communications (my old job). We face many priorities over the coming months. My team will focus on continuing to provide quality services and programs. Growth in membership based on our new location will help us achieve a size which will allow us to do more. I am committed to ensuring we have appropriate Rabbinical support. As a first step I am pleased to announce that the USCJ, in recognition of the great potential our congregation holds, will be helping us with the placement of a Rabbinical intern; and last, but not least, much is to be done to prepare for our move to the building under construction next door. In the new Leo and Sala Goldhar Conference and Celebration Centre on the Lebovic Campus, we will have access to a modern facility where we can worship and also be able to host beautiful simchas for our members. Looking ahead, I believe that together we can achieve many things if we work together. From time to time I may approach you and ask you to help us out with a specific task. I hope that when you consider my request you will weigh the fact that I am not asking for myself but for our entire Beit Rayim family. Also, if there is some type of volunteerism for our community that you are interested in, I urge you not to wait for me to approach you but encourage you to seek me out. I welcome your calls and e-mails. I know that together, with a positive attitude and a willingness to work together, Beit Rayim will grow to be a significant component of Jewish life in our greater community. Continued on page 20

Message from the Past-President By Irv Siegel I will be ending my term as president at Beit Rayim tonight. I leave with a mixture of sadness and excitement. I worked along side some excellent people over the years and it was a great learning experience. I am excited to see the changes that both Shelley as Chairman of the Board and Larry as President will create to further Beit Rayim. Irv Siegel
I was a member of a Team that had the chutzpah to make some difficult decisions and take the actions which were needed to help our community. Beit Rayim is now positioned where the future is very bright and promising.
Our new location at CHAT, the move to the Goldhar Conference & Celebration Centre, growth in our Hebrew School and rabbinical support for this coming year is very telling of the work that has been done to turn things around. I recently had the good fortune of participating for the March of the Living (MOL). MOL is a two week educational experience that takes place in Poland and Israel where we learn about the atrocities of the Shoa and then celebrate the miracle of the rebirth of Eretz Yisrael. There are several different MOL trips. I went on the one geared for grade 11 students. Including chaperones, staff, guides, security, etc we numbered approximately 300. It is an amazing trip that takes you through the full spectrum of emotions. I want to relate a special part of the trip that resonated with me. I’ll try to set the stage. We have just walked into a forest outside of Tarnow, Poland and we stop in front of a mass grave known as ya’ar hayeladim- Forest of Children. All of the participants are seated on a small hillside overlooking the grave site which is delineated by a short fence. The teenagers are silent holding unlit candles. The only sounds you can hear are birds chirping and leafs rustling in the wind. Right above the mass grave is the only place in the forest where you can clearly see the sky. Separating the participants and the grave site is Rabbi Rafi Lipner who accompanied the Toronto contingent. He tells us that on June 11, 1942, 850 children were marched from Tarnow to the forest and gunned down. The Rabbi goes onto explain to us that in a written testament which Hitler signed in Berlin in April 1929 - last paragraph - his last thought to close his document...described the battle "against the universal toxin of all people…that being international Judaism". Rabbi Lipner picked up on the fact that it was Judaism and not the Jew. Hitler wanted to eradicate Judaism from the face of the earth. Rabbi Lipner reminded us that the first attack in his master plan was Kristelnacht - on shuls - because he knew where the heart of the Jewish community laid…with their synagogues. Synagogues are where we propagate our knowledge, traditions and culture. The rabbi turns and looks at the grave site and pauses then turns towards us, trying to hold back tears; he says ―behind me is the lost potential of our people…in front of me is the potential of our people‖. He insists that we have to take an active role in maintaining Judaism otherwise it will diminish as time goes on. Not taking an active role is, in effect, complying with Hitler’s plan. continued on next page

Message from the Past - President (continued) Toda Rabbah ~ Thank You We would like to thank Jeff Grosman, Ken Gutman, Bill Mandelman and Helen Smolkin for their many years of devoted service to our Congregation. We are also saying goodbye to Tracy Handler who has stepped down from the Board to focus her energies as the Team Leader for the Youth Department.
Handing over the gavel! l-r Larry Miller, Irv Siegel
President’s Message Continued Beit Rayim has a very important role in the GTA Jewish community. We are providing Jewish education to many children while enabling many adults to express their Judaism through a connection to synagogue life. Through our collective efforts we have turned an organization on a positive path that will ultimately engage the rapidly growing Jewish community of York Region. I am confident that one day we will see Beit Rayim as the focal point of Jewish life in York Region. All of us will take pride in the fact that we were integral in that achievement. There are many people to thank over the past two years. Eli Bard has always been an inspiration to me. My fellow Management Team Leaders and Board of Directors, Fran and Grace in the office and all you who have lent a hand, took on an event, recited a haftarah, everyone who has donated their funds to maintain Beit Rayim…you have all contributed to our successes. Thanks to my advisors – Shelley Isenberg, Larry Miller, Alan Lechem, Rick Ekstein, Alan Goldberg and last but not least...my wife. Isabel has had to endure countless meeting and events in our house… sometimes two at the same time! She has had to listen to all my speeches, and review all my documents. Thanks honey.
March of the Living. Beit Rayim Continent. l to r: Jack Bengall (past-president), Orly Kahane-Rapport, Irv Siegel, Ruth Ekstein, Chair of the program, Ethan Stern, Sherrell Kahane-Rapport, and Kevin Goldberg
Best of luck to those who will continue on the Board and/or Management Team. I plan to continue to volunteer for Beit Rayim and the Jewish community. Consider volunteering your time for Beit Rayim. It’s good for the soul. Thanks.

Sisterhood By Madoka Steingart I cannot find the proper words to thank Elaine, Ronda and Fran at the office for another successful Sisterhood evening. Most of all, thank you to all the participants who came with a fun loving heart. It was amazing to see Myrtle's mother's rolling pin, then see Paula and Elaine taking out their pins that were exactly the same (see photograph). I've never seen that type of rolling pin. Elaine was very caring for each one of us while we were struggling to make our first, and sometimes, unique hamentaschen. Although we were actually busy talking and sharing our baking stories during the evening, we were quiet for a short time while Elaine gave us instructions. I think Purim in our homes each year is going to smell very delicious!
Reflections on Rabbi Sol on his 5th yahrzeit By: Elaine Tanenzapf March 23, 2011 – 18 Adar 5771 Tonight marks the fifth Yahrzeit for my husband, Rabbi Sol. To appreciate who my husband was one had to experience being in his presence – the teddy bear smile, his sensitivity, his sense of humour, the interminable pauses. You were fortunate to have benefited from his knowledge – insightful Divrei Torah, dialogue and story lines of mystery novels and movies intertwined into a conversation, expertise on comparative religions. On a practical level, I can only encourage one to persist in dealing with the inevitable changes that life presents. Acutely aware of the grieving process, I have come to realize that there needs to be a ―new normal‖. Although joy and happiness continue to be elusive, I reluctantly accept that my life will never be the same, as my loss is permanent. Working hard at building a new life, today I have more stability than a year ago – though it feels like an interminable and difficult road, filled with lots of potholes. During these past few years Beit Rayim has also had to deal with difficult situations. With strong leadership and dedicated volunteers you have reached a milestone in your development towards success. That we are meeting here this evening is indicative of how far you have come and bodes well for the future. I recall when Professor Lockshin arrived on the academic scene as a young, ambitious, bright star. This evening we are fortunate in that he will be sharing his knowledge with us.

Chairman’s Message - Building Update by Shelley Isenberg Our move from the multi-purpose room at Reena into a much more enjoyable and comfortable Beit Midrash at TanenbaumCHAT at the Kimel Family Education Centre, on the Joseph and Wolf Lebovic Jewish CommunityCampus was very positively received. We have a signed a very detailed Letter of Understanding with UJA concerning our new offices in the Community Services Pavilion and the use of the Leo and Sara Goldhar Conference and Celebration Centre for our Services & Simchas (except for our High Holy Day services which will continue to take place at CHAT). We are in the process of finalizing our lease and the signing of it is imminent. The building remains on schedule to be opened in the fall of 2012, however, no date has yet been set by UJA to accept reservations for the kosher banquet hall facilities. We will be sure to announce it as soon as it becomes available, as I know that many of you are waiting eagerly for this. At the AGM we saw photographs of the interior under construction as well as artist’s renderings of the facilities; they are magnificent. From the moment one comes up the escalator from the underground parking and walks into a large sun-filled atrium, clearly the architect’s vision of community comes to life. For those of you who were not at this year’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) let me share with you my ―Chairman’s Challenge‖.: Our future success depends very much on growing our membership. At the AGM I challenged each family in our congregation to bring in just one new family to join Beit Rayim in the coming year. If this goal is met our Management Team and Board will immediately set out to bring long term plans for a larger facility and a Rabbi to the forefront. This is a situation we would like nothing more than to have to deal with sooner rather than later. I hope to be announcing an incentive program to help kick-start this very important initiative. In fact, I’m appealing for volunteers who want to help formulate and execute this key strategic initiative. Please contact me at isenbergshelley@rogers.com I look forward to seeing you in shul on Shabbat or at a program event. If we are not doing the kinds of things that will attract you to attend please call me and let’s talk. There are too many members who I only get to see 3 days a year and that’s far too big a gap.
Cholent Challenge By: Irv Siegel Three weeks ago a group of fifteen synagogue members gathered to learn the art of preparing the traditional Shabbat meal known as cholent. We met on a Thursday night to prepare the dish (both meat and vegetarian varieties) and returned after Shabbat to devour three large pots of delicious cholent. Everyone had a great time on both accounts. I am looking forward to tasting the creations of Beit Rayim’s new group of cholent chefs. Irv’s recipe, along with his secret ingredient, can be found on our website: www.beitrayim.org

Israel Committee By Ehud Avitzur & Rivka Beer The Beit Rayim Israel Committee is a team of volunteers committed to raising awareness of and pride in Israel. It has been an exciting and productive year for the Israel Committee! We built up a team of dynamic, interesting and passionate individuals who are working together to bring entertaining and thought- provoking programs not only to our Beit Rayim congregants, but also to the wider Jewish community. Each month our Israeli Film Club screens an Israeli film to a capacity crowd of Beit Rayim-ers, followed by informal discussion. This year, for the first time, we also had a Book Club meeting at which we reviewed a novel by award-winning author David Grossman, To The End of The Land. Our effort to reach the broader Jewish community has been in co-operation with USCJ Israel Commission in partnership with Nefesh B’Nefesh. We conceived of, and instituted, the “Israel Through the Arts” series. The idea behind this series is to raise awareness of the Israeli way of life in its richness and complexity by looking at Israeli artists and by examining their creative works. Since art connects us to the culture and fabric of a society, this will increase our knowledge beyond the immediate news items or current political agenda. Hopefully, this will enhance our understanding and help us form a less idealized but more genuine perception of Israel. Through these programs we hope to enhance our love and appreciation for Israel and its people in a more realistic way. We have held three highly successful “Israel Through the Arts” events—one focused upon literature, another upon music, and the third on the visual arts. For the first event we presented awardwinning Israeli author Eshkol Nevo, who read passages from his novel, Homesick, and engaged the audience in a discussion not only about his novel but also about Israeli history, culture and societal Jeremy Maissel from Israel Seminars issues. Our second event, entitled ―Israel Musical History Tour‖, had Jeremy Maissel of Israel Seminars presenting music for us to listen to and lyrics for us to read as we discussed Israel’s history in context of society’s atmosphere and changing attitudes toward the state. Our third and final event of the year, held on May 16th, was called ―The Motherland in Israeli Art‖. Speaker Noa Cohn showed us examples of Israeli art throughout 100 years of Zionism, and led us in discussion about why we study art, what art means to the diverse Israeli population, and how the connection between Jews and the land can be seen in art. We want to thank you for joining us for these events, and hope that you enjoyed them as much as we did! We welcome your feedback, and we encourage you to contact us, via Beit-Rayim administration (admin@beitrayim.org) if you have ideas for future programming and/or would like to get involved.

May 2011 Iyar 5771 Dear Beit Rayim Member: We are pleased that Beit Rayim Synagogue is again participating in the Voluntary Check-off Programme on your annual dues statement, to support MERCAZ & MASORTI (Conservative/Masorti Judaism in Israel). Our Masorti/Conservative Movement in Israel relies almost entirely on support from Diaspora Conservative Jews. The Orthodox Movement is funded by the Israeli Government - the Masorti Movement is not! As Conservative Jews, we must support our mishpacha (family) in Israel. If we don’t help them, who will? We’d like to explain the differences and importance of these two vital organizations for our Movement: “MASORTI” is the Hebrew name for Conservative Judaism in Israel. The Canadian Foundation for Masorti Judaism is the fundraising organization, which supports the Masorti Movement and its related institutions in Israel. The Masorti Movement promotes Torah, Zionism, religious tolerance and pluralism. It is comprised of over 60 synagogue centres (kehillot) and runs many programmes including the NOAM Youth Movement, MAROM Young Adult Leadership Programme, and the Bar/Bat Mitzvah Programme for Special Needs Children. The Movement assumes half of the salary costs of its congregational rabbis. Related Masorti institutions include the Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies, TALI Enrichment School Programmes, and the Conservative Yeshiva. Your Masorti donation of $18/family is fully tax deductible. See our website for more information: www.masorti.ca MERCAZ-CANADA is the Zionist membership organization of the Conservative Judaism in Canada. We are committed to: Advancing religious pluralism in Israel Offering Matching Scholarships to young people attending Conservative sponsored Israel trips (e.g.USY Pilgrimage, NATIV, Conservative Yeshiva, Ramah Seminar, etc.) Encouraging Zionist/Israel programming in Canadian Conservative synagogues Increasing our presence and influence at the World Zionist Organization and Jewish Agency in order to gain recognition and funding for the Masorti/Conservative Movement in Israel. You can support MERCAZ-Canada by being an annual, dues paying member (only $9/adult or $18/couple). See our website for more information: www.mercaz.ca Please check off MERCAZ & MASORTI on your dues statement and help sustain the Masorti Movement in Israel. Todah Rabah!

Mesorah Report By Sony Nseiri, Mesorah Team Leader Shavuot is approaching, the marking of our receiving of the Ten Commandments. It always amazes me that more congregants do not attend this important festival. Why not join us this year? Services will be led by Cantor Eli on June 8 and 9.
Shavuot Wednesday, June 8 ~ 9 AM Thursday, June 9 ~ 9 AM (includes Yizkor)
As the summer nears, I would also like to remind you that we hold Shabbat services every Saturday morning. Please do the mitzvah of helping us make a minyan, both men and women count. I know how important this is for those in our community that need to say Kaddish. We can also confirm very exciting news, Rabbi Edelman will be returning to join us again for High Holy Day Services. It’s not too early to think about volunteering to assist us with the logistics of these services, we really would appreciate your help. For our younger Beit Rayim members, we would be happy to sign ―Volunteer‖ forms. Looking back on the past few months, we had a very boisterous Megillah reading followed the next day with an awesome Purim party. The Purim party was a partnership of Beit Rayim, The Israeli Scouts and UJA. There were well over 1000 people who enjoyed the festivities.
The synagogue office will be closing at 2 PM on Tuesday, June 7 and will reopen on Friday, June 10. High Holy Days 5772
We are excited to announce that Rabbi Edelman will Eli and Ester Bard ran a Pesach workshop from their home. Dear Eli & Ester: On behalf of the Kendal family, we want to thank you very much for the considerable effort that was put into the making of the Passover Seder workshop. It was informative, enjoyable and delicious. My father and I both learned a tremendous amount. The time and effort put into the study binder you created will be used for Seders for many years to come. Thank you for the great educational experience!!! Neil Kendal

Hebrew School Update
By: Tracy Handler, Youth Team Leader
By Kevin Knopman, School Principal
As the youth program year draws to a close I would like to thank all of the kids and families for their participation and support. This has been a great program year and we've had record participation in many of our youth programs. Bryan Gerson, our Youth Director, has done an amazing job finding new and exciting programs to entertain and even teach your kids. For our Kinderkids and Yeladim aged kids, programs included team building using Lego to a Passover mosaics program to learning how to be in the circus. At each program the kids have had a great time. For our Kadima and USY aged youth, we started off the year with our annual Sukkah Limo Hop. Laserquest and snow tubing helped to attract some of our older youth. Thank you to Rachel Goldberg and Melissa Sharvit for working hard at recruiting kids to attend our programs. Our Family Havdallah on the Beach* at the Wave Pool had over 40 participants. We look forward to doing this program again next winter. Thank you to Cantor Eli Bard for helping to lead the service. Be sure to join us next program year for new and exciting youth programs. For High School aged kids, be sure to watch the end of summer bulletin for High Holy Day Volunteer opportunities. This year we will be accepting a fixed number of volunteers on a firstcome, first-served basis. Thanks again for all your support. Have a great summer! * To see a video clip go to www.youtube.com and search ―Beit Rayim Havdallah on the Beach‖
As another school year draws to a close, there is so much that we are proud of here at Beit Rayim Hebrew School. Firstly, we are growing at a steady pace. We may be in a position to open one or two more classrooms next school year. Also, Shaar Shalom Hebrew School is closing and we are looking forward to growing and welcoming new students from that school. As of now we have registered 21 students from Shaar Shalom and we anticipate more as our registration process continues into the summer. Secondly, I am excited to announce that our Chidon Hatanach program was very successful. We sent five students to the National Competition in Montreal. Of those five, 2 students made it to the top 10 in the Grade 5-6 division and one student made it to the top 10 in the Grade 8 division (competing against Day School students). A special Yeeshar Koach goes out to Kobe Goodfield who finished in 3rd place in the Grade 5-6 division. Our team then went on to place first at the competition held at Holy Blossom on May 15. Kol Hakavod to them! Thirdly, I am excited to report that all of our current teachers will be returning next year. This ensures that the high quality programming that we provided this year will continue and grow for next year. Remember, even though our Early Bird rate has passed, synagogue members are always eligible for a discount on Hebrew School fees. Lastly, on a more personal note, I have found my experiences this year at Beit Rayim Hebrew School to be very positive. The Synagogue should be proud of the efforts of Grace in the office and of all of our professional and engaging teachers. I look forward to reporting next time about a successful start of yet another school year.

We are affiliated with the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism (USCJ). At our synagogue, we are often praised for our warm, haymishe atmosphere and participatory services. Yahrzeits It is traditional to kindle the Yahrzeit candle in the home after sundown on the day before the date indicated in the announcement. It should remain lit until sundown the next day. Every effort should be made to say the Kaddish at the evening, morning, and afternoon service. We encourage our members to come to the Synagogue on the Shabbat prior to the Yahrzeit to honour the memory of their loved one.

Larry Miller Continued: Before I conclude, I have some people to thank: Thank you to Bill Mandelman for introducing me to Beit Rayim and its warm and participatory services. Thank you to the many people who I have had the pleasure to work with, to debate with, to plan with , who have encouraged me and to the lot of you who I now consider to be good friends. Thank you to Cantor Eli who has taught me and encouraged me to improve my davening skills….which are still very much, a work in progress. Thank you to our now Immediate Past President Irv Siegel, who made the simple gesture of actually ASKING me to help. That gesture was enough to start my journey to this position. Thanks Irv for all that you have taught me under your careful watch. Thank you also to Isabel Siegel who has accommodated us, fed us, and cleaned up after us, during countless meetings at the Siegel residence. Thank you to our hard working office staff: Fran, Haya and Grace for your dedication to our Congregation. Thank you to our Hebrew School principal Kevin Knopman for doing such a great job in his first year, and for also teaching me FACEBOOK. And last, but not least, thank you to my family and in particular my wife of almost 35 years, Amy, for meals missed, weekends and evenings interrupted and for her encouragement and ongoing support. One final thought to leave you with. There is no better form of advertisement for a product or service than ―word of mouth‖. Think of how often you ask someone for their recommendation, on what to buy, or where to shop. For a Jewish person, joining a synagogue should be a natural, a given, but in a city like ours there are many choices. I want each and every one of our members to be able to strongly recommend, without hesitation, Beit Rayim membership to their family, friends and neighbours. For me, I can do that now. My wish, my goal, is to work towards ensuring that each of you feels the same way. Thank you.
