MECHIRAT CHAMETZ: The Selling of Leaven The sale of Chametz is an important part of our Pesach preparations. Chametz is defined broadly as all fermented grain products, as well as foods and liquids made from them (even if only using a minute amount). Moreover, Chametz includes dishes/ and utensils, which are used during the rest of the year - therefore, separate sets of dishes and utensils are set aside for Pesach usage. (It is possible to kasher some dishes and utensils for Pesach - see that section of this booklet.) The Torah prohibits both the consumption and the possession of Chametz during Passover. Since financial considerations make it impossible to literally observe the Biblical command to remove all leavened products (it would necessitate destroying our year-round dishes annually before Passover), our sages instituted the practice of selling our leavened products. Thus, all Jews are reminded of the necessity to divest themselves of legal ownership of all Chametz during Passover. The Rabbi acting on behalf of those congregants who authorize him to sell their Chametz arranges this legal transaction. This transaction transfers all Chametz, which may physically remain in the home to a non-Jew who has title to the Chametz during Pesach. After Passover, the Rabbi reacquires the Chametz and we may resume using it. To sell your Chametz, you must see Rabbi Eligberg by Tuesday evening, April 7, or complete the authorization form and drop it (not your Chametz) off at the synagogue office. It is customary to contribute to the “Maot Chittim’’ (Passover Food) Fund at this time. LIVING THE WORDS OF THE HAGGADAH “All who are hungry, let them come and eat. All who are in need, let them come to celebrate Passover.” (The Passover Haggadah) There are many Families within our Jewish community who cannot prepare for the Seder and the Passover celebration. They are families on limited incomes without the means to buy the foods and other items necessary for a proper Passover observance. It is customary at Passover time to contribute to a “MAOT HITTIM” fund. The meaning of these Hebrew words is “wheat money” and the funds are used to provide the basic needs of Jewish families for Passover. In the Passover spirit of sharing and caring, we ask you to fulfill this mitzvah by contributing to the Passover fund.
