Shalom Horim Today (February 25) is Rosh Chodesh Adar, the first day of the Hebrew month of Adar. The first of Adar has for years has a special resonance for me - in part because it was the day I was accepted to rabbinical school and even before that because it meant Purim was a more two weeks away. For the record, I love Purim. Truthfully, I love all Jewish holidays for reasons as unique as the holidays themselves but that will be a subject for a different day. So, I love Purim - it’s may hem and masquerade, its joy and its jesting, its carefree and quality. Millennia ago, Cha”zal, our ancient sagas of blessed memory, taught the following dictum, “Me she-nich-nas Adar marbim b’simcha” - “When Adar arrives one should be especially happy.” Through the centuries of our history, often in the midst of challenging circumstances, our ancestors entered a realm of happiness and of hope. The Purim story reminded our forebears that redemption and the hidden hand of God were being held out for them to grasp. The Purim celebration with its focus on fun and frivolity, freed them from their burdens and enabled them to laugh; to escape the serious in favour of the silly. Many adults today perceive Purim as a holiday designed for children - Children are clad in costumes, carpooled to carnivals and are according the liberty to cavort and create chaos during the Megillah whenever they hear Haman’s name - and as it is a holiday for children feel exempt from participating directly. I am always saddened when I see adults marginalize themselves from the Purim festivities. With Purim, Judaism is trying to teach us about the importance of laughter in our lives and about the necessity of setting seriousness aside for even a short moment. To laugh without restraint, to celebrate without worrying about how we look to others, to be fully present in a moment of joy with our family occurs too infrequently in our lives. Purim presents us with just such an opportunity if we choose to seize it. This year, become part of the party for Purim. Details about Beit Rayim’s Purim festivities are on page 3 of the Newsletter. I look forward to celebrating with you. To get everyone into the mood for the Megillah Reading on Monday, March 9th, students, faculty and even parents are invited to come to school on Sunday, March 8th in costume and preview their Purim paraphernalia. B’vracha
The message will be given to the teacher who will contact you.
