Registration Package: The Registration Package is now available on our website. Take advantage of our Early Bird Registration fees. Deadline Friday, May 16th. Shalom Horim/Parents Israel’s Declaration of Independence is a truly remarkable document. Issued in Tel Aviv on the 5th of Iyar 5708 (May 14, 1948) the authors of the text were able to capture the unique historical relationship between Eretz Yisrael, the Land of Israel and the Jewish people. The words read by David ben Gurion expressed the religious and spiritual contribution our ancestors in the land made to the whole world. In a few short paragraphs the Declaration exposes the heart of the Jewish people; suffering the travails of their dispersion while yearning in each successive generation to return to Eretz Yisrael. From the First Zionist Congress convened by Theodor Herzl through the Balfour Declaration’s (1917) international affirmation of the connection between the Jews and their ancestral land, the catastrophe of the Shoah and culminating with the United Nation’s resolution calling for the establishment of a Jewish state in Eretz Yisrael, the Zionist endeavor is recounted and the accomplishments of the early builders of the land is chronicled. With this as preamble the new state is born in the following words. Accordingly we, members of the People’s Council, representatives of the Jewish Community of Eretz Israel and of the Zionist Movement, are here assembled on the day of the termination of the British Mandate over Eretz Israel and, by virtue of our natural and historic right and on the strength of the resolution of the United Nations General Assembly, hereby declare the establishment of a Jewish State in Eretz Israel, to be known as the State of Israel. cont. next page

Principals Message Continued:
The mission of the fledgling state is defined through the prism of Jewish values. The State of Israel will be open for Jewish immigration and for the Ingathering of the Exiles; it will foster the development of the country for the benefit of all its inhabitants; it will be based on freedom, justice and peaces as envisaged by the prophets of Israel; it will ensure complete equality of social and political rights to all its inhabitants irrespective of religion, race or sex; it will guarantee freedom of religion, conscience, language, education and culture; it will safeguard the Holy Places of all religions; and it will be faithful to the principles of the Charter of the United Nations. Following upon its commitment to the UN’s principles, the Declaration calls upon the UN for its support, makes a promise of full and equal citizenship to Arab inhabitants of the land and extends an offer of peace to its Arab neighbours. As the document comes to an end it addresses an appeal to world - Jewry to support he realization of Israel’s redemption . For six decade, Jews around the world have met this expectation with an abiding commitment; with activism and enthusiasm. Events in Israel capture our attention, touch our souls and weave into the fabric of our Jewish identity. The challenges of sixty years ago have changed some, thank God, have been solved, many others have grown more complex. What has not and must not change is our willingness to act on behalf of the State of Israel. While we may all find our own individual ways to show this support, the annual Walk With Israel is a unique communal and collective opportunity to stand together and show each other, the people and politicians in the GTA and across Canada as well as our Israeli brothers and sisters, our love for Eretz Yisrael and Medinat Yisrael, the Land of Israel and the State of Israel. I look forward to celebrating Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel@60 with you on Sunday, May 4th and walking with you on Sunday, May 25th. Please check the website for more details and go to www.ujawalkwithisrael.com to register. If for some reason you cannot participate in the Walk With Israel please call the office to sponsor a walker.
