Remember, the fall holidays do not end with Yom Kippur. Our festive season continues with Sukkot, beginning on Monday evening, October 13th and culminates with Simchat Torah on Wednesday, October 22nd. Sukkot - the Festival of Booths - is the third of the three pilgrimage festivals. Sukkot continues the story of our ancestors, which started with the Exodus from Egypt during Pesach, and continued with the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai on Shavuot and concludes with our re-enactment of our wandering in the wilderness while dwelling in temporary shelters or booths (Sukkot). Sukkot also has an agricultural aspect. It marks the final harvest in the land of Israel before the onset of the winter months. During the harvest season our Israelite ancestors would often sleep out in the fields in temporary shelters reminiscent of Sukkot. The primary mitzvot of Sukkot include: 1. Building a sukkah or at least enjoying festive meals while in the sukkah. 2. Owning a Lulav and Etrog - the four species: palm, myrtle, willow and citron - recalling the agricultural significance of the Sukkot festival. 3. Rejoicing - as Sukkot is called “zeman simchateinu” (the season of our joy). We rejoice and share a sense of fulfillment in our completing the process of atonement and repentance initiated during the Days of Awe. We also express our gratitude to God for the blessings, both material and spiritual, that the Holy One has bestowed on us. In addition to services, they are many opportunities to celebrate Sukkot and Simchat Torah at Beit Rayim starting with our “Sh’ma Pajama Party and Storytelling in the Sukkah” and wrapping up with Hakafot – singing and dancing with the Torah. See the attached flyer with details. Chag Sameach and Shana Tova,
The message will be given to the teacher who will contact you.
