19 Nisan 5769 13 April 2009 Shalom Chaverim, It is hard to believe that we are on the verge of finishing another year at Ross Doan, our transitional home until our new building on the Lebovic Campus is completed. So many people have helped to make this school year a successful one. First and foremost, there is our faculty who have become masters of making “classroom in a box” come alive with creative and inspiring teaching. Second, is the tireless effort of Grace Tetelbaun who made sure that information flowed, resources were always readily available and that students and parents were greeted warmly. Grace has maintained the highest level of professionalism while continuing to add her own unique spin to things. Even as our transitional period continues, Beit Rayim Hebrew School will continue to preserve most of the familiar traditions and programs that have been part of the BRHS experience over the years. We will maintain our two-day per week schedule and continued to meet the USCJ standards for Bar/Bat Mitzvah in any Conservative synagogue. Our monthly Kabbalat service became a little more musical, each grade took a turn in leading parts of our service and we expect increased participation in the coming year. Each grade participated in a Family Education event with families joining together in the study of Torah. Holiday celebrations continued on Hannukah and a Beit Rayim Synagogue and School Megillah Reading. This has been possible thanks to the School Council, under Harris Korn’s leadership, who have been incredible partners, lending a hand, shlepping a box, adding their insight and doing whatever was necessary to provide our students the best possible experience at BRHS. I want to acknowledge Harris Korn for his deep commitment to BRHS; acting as our treasurer and representing the interests of the school to the congregation’s Board of Directors. Special thanks to Steffi Goodfield and Sherry Nadel for spearheading our Snack Club program, a central and essential fundraiser for the school. Beit Rayim Hebrew School remains devoted to inspiring Jewish children to embrace the knowledge and faith of their heritage. As an egalitarian, Conservative school, our goal is to teach girls and boys equally to become educated, committed and ethical members of the Jewish community. We are constantly seeking new and innovative ways to educate our youth. One significant change for next year involves our Grade 1 students whose program will meet only on Sundays. The curriculum for Grade 1 will be more music and song based, with holidays emerging from the array of crafts, and song supplementing basic Hebrew reading readiness.

The school will continue to build on our Hebrew/Prayer program with computer supported learning materials which has been very successful and we are exploring how we can utilize this resource to better serve the needs of individual students. Students in Grades 1 through 3 will continue to use the illustrated Siddur introduced this year, wherein the pictures also served as visual cues to unlocking the meaning of the accompanying prayer. As I write this, I am very proud of our students who participated in the annual Chidon HaTanach (Bible Quiz) competition, all seven of whom qualified for the national competition which will be held in Montreal in May. Special recognition goes to Taylor Goodfield, who was both a participant and the group’s mentor throughout their preparations. Discussions with the School Council and the faculty on how we can better meet BRHS educational goals and objectives, as well as the needs of our students, continue on an ongoing basis. Your input into that discussion is always welcome and I look forward to hearing from you. Last, but certainly not least, I want to thank you for being our partners throughout this transitional period and showing confidence in our ability to continue to provide quality Jewish education to your children. We have already begun to plan for the next school year and now we ask you to do the same by re-registering your child(ren) for the coming year at BRHS.
