About Coco What inspired you to start BKC? One sunny day in my little Cornish hometown I attended a cruelty-free makeup demonstration. She asked us to bring our own make up bags and I quickly realised just how many ‘cruel’ items I used, unknowingly, everyday. I wanted to find out more. Were there kinder ways to live? I decided to start Be Kind Coco to document my journey and hopefully encourage others to do the same. Slowly but surely, I became obsessed and discovered so many incredible people trying to make a difference. I decided to turn Be Kind Coco into a blog where I could review products and interview amazing people. Now there is even a Youtube channel! Each and every person or brand featured in this guide inspired me to start and every day they inspire me to keep going. What made you want to create a Christmas gift guide? I wanted to make it easy to find ethical brands, in a season where you are normally too busy to sit down and think! I love to support small and ethical businesses so that was my focus for this gift guide. PLUS so many of the brands this year have offered exclusive discounts so I love knowing that everyone who reads this guide will find some new favourite brands and find great deals too. What is on your Christmas Playlist?
decorating our Christmas tree and since then it has always been on my Christmas playlist! Since I am from England, Christmas is always a great time for snuggling up by the fire with good films, and every year I try to watch the whole Harry Potter series BUT some new favourites are ‘Rise of the Guardians’ and ‘Arthur Christmas’. Do you have any Christmas traditions? What is the best or most momorable Christmas gift you have recieved? One year, I recieved a set of scissors. It must have been over ten years ago now but to this day I still use them! I don’t think I appreciated the gift so much at the time but I do now! What is next for BKC? I have HUGE plans for 2020 and don’t want to reveal too much yet. But there will definitely be more videos, and more of a focus on education and action than ever before! Where can we find you? I am on social media as @bekindcoco and would love to talk more with you there. We have a great gang! Plus, if you are a Melbournian I would absolutely love you to join my facebook group: Be Kind Melbourne, which is a great place to talk to like minded people and hear about upcoming events.
One year my mother and I decided to listen to the Jackson Five while

Welcome to the 2019
Ethical Guide to Christmas! It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas... This year however, I’d like to ask you to take a step back have a breather, and move towards a more ethical Christmas. A less wasteful Christmas. A greener Christmas. Dare I say, a craftier Christmas... There is an ethical alternative to this silly season and I hope you can see some of that inside this guide. The Ethical Guide to Christmas contains ethical brands, local makers, vegan deliciousness and kind tips you can take forward with you into the New Year. Not to mention a humongous DIY section where you can learn how to make natural skincare and cleaning products, create some Christmas crafts and bake some amazing festive treats! This year, support local, support ethical, support causes you believe in and support each other... Isn’t that what this season is really all about.
Kindly, Coco

Graffiti Ore Wearable art pieces hand-crafted from repurposed graffiti paint Graffiti Ore jewellery is made up of hundreds of layers of colourful spray paint built up over decades of street artists leaving their mark on public art spaces. The recovered pieces are hand sculpted to reveal beautiful combinations of colours and textures, preserved in a thin layer of resin and paired with sterling silver findings to create distinctive statement pieces. Handmade by Melbourne based maker Grace Huie Robbins, every piece is completely one-of-a-kind and unable to be replicated, each telling a unique story of Australia’s street art history.

Meet the Maker Luna and Soul
What first inspired you to create Luna and Soul and why was it important to you to create an ethical business?
I used to work in the fast fashion industry and started my career in buying and then product development, sourcing, etc... In the beginning, I loved working for fast-fashion retailers because it was cool sourcing and developing products for all these well known US, UK, French and German brands... but the reality was different. The focus was always on shortterm profits and sales but never on the environmental and human costs. The fast fashion industry dictated what the latest must-have products were. I often worked with retailers and brands who changed their minds about a product at the last minute because another retailer had something they didn't have or the media told them to do so. Everything needed to be produced quickly and cheaply. There was not much time or thought put in to finding good quality toxin-free materials. Working ridiculously long hours, over the weekend and during holidays without additional pay was the norm. Negotiating prices was like being on a battlefield. Sometimes a manufacturer had to accept a price that was not sustainable nor fair. I often felt dirty, mean and awful being forced to do something that didn’t align with my personal ethics. The idea of making fashion more ethical without any negative impact on people or the environment was mission impossible while working there. This was not only exhausting but also didn't feel right. I didn't want to be part of an industry that was so short-sighted, and I thought there must be a better way. So my urge to create a brand that would put environmental and social aspects first became stronger. 10
After over 10 years living in London and working in fast fashion I decided it was time for a change. I quit my job, packed up my things and travelled to Bali where I decided to do my yoga teaching training. During this time we often spoke about our fears and dreams, and Luna & Soul was one of them. It was here that I gained the courage to follow my dreams and create an earth-friendly brand inspired by the philosophy of Yoga. Be kind and mindful, always. My mission is to inspire people to be active and make sustainable choices when choosing their wardrobe. I think it's possible to make beautiful, functional, ethical clothing that doesn’t hurt our planet, animals and people!
What struggles have you found due to operating in a more ethical way?
What is your favourite product in your collection right now?
MOQ - Minimum order quantities is one of the biggest struggles for small and ethical businesses, the requirement is often between 1000 units or more. Luna & Soul produces in small batches, this is not only sustainable but also allows me to see if a product works instead of creating unnecessary waste. The challenge of this is often that you get hit with up-charges for not meeting the MOQ which means that prices are often higher.
Thats a very tricky question. I actually love every single piece in my collection.
Are there any ways you still want to improve your brand? There is always way for improvements, the sky is your limit. I’m currently working on an exciting project and hope to be able to reveal this soon.
What is on your Christmas playlist? I love Last Christmas from Wham and alI I want from Christmas is you from Maria Carry. These two songs make me dance. Do you have any Christmas traditions? Spending lots of time with friends and family. What is the best or most memorable Christmas gift you have received? An Orchid, I love plants.

Luna and Soul Luna & Soul has been inspired by the philosophy of yoga and is based in Melbourne, Australia. They are mindful of the environment and the people that produce our clothes. We care about the environment, animals, plants, people, water, pollution and waste. Luna & Soul strongly believe that beautiful clothes and respecting our environment can go hand in hand. The fashion industry has a major impact on our environment and Luna & Soul works hard to reduce this. They only use natural, eco-friendly, recycled, biodegradable, vegan and sustainable materials that don’t have any negative impacts on the people who make our clothes and our environment.
1 12
Luna & Soul are ocean friendly and use natural fibres instead of synthetics to avoid micro-plastic in our oceans. Their cotton is organic, rather than pesticide-intensive cotton and is GOTS certified. Their Tencel is from Lenzing. All the colours used in their collections are toxin-free, natural plant dyed or dyed to environmentally friendly standards. 1 | VINYASA JUMPSUIT | MIDNIGHT BLACK | $189.95 2 | OVERSIZED TANK | MIDNIGHT BLACK | $79.95 3 | ASUMMETRIC TOP | SPLASH | $89.95 3 | LOTUS PANTS | MIDNIGHT BLACK | $129.95 4 | FEMININE BRA | CALMING WHITE | $85.95 4 | HIGH WAISTED LEGGINGS | $119.95 5 | CROPPED TEE | PINK | $79.95 6 | CROPPED YOGA TOP | BLACK | $89.95 7 | ASANA BRA | SKY BLUE | $39.95 8 | FITNESS BRA | MIDNIGHT BLACK | $69.95 9 | WARRIOR LEGGINGS | $129.95 10 | OVERSIZED SHIVA JUMPER | DUSTY PINK | $129.95 10 | HIGH WASITED LEGGINGS | $119.95 11 | ZIG ZAG TOP | CALMING WHITE | $99.95 11 | LOTUS PANTS | MIDNIGHT BLACK | $129.95

Lazy Girl Lingerie Lazy Girl Lingerie is all about inspiring effortless confidence for the woman who celebrates her body and is not limited by age, size or shape. Each and every order is personally handmade by designer Cassandra in her home studio, based in the beautiful Scenic Rim QLD. Her bespoke production methods mean that a personalised made to measure service is available to her clients, for pieces that don’t compromise on style or comfort. A ‘Made to order’ philosophy equals less waste, as each and every piece is handmade especially for the woman who has purchased it. It eliminates excess stock that could potentially end up as waste, as is common in the fashion industry with end of season stock usually ending up as landfill. Plus, loved clothes last, and when you are mindful about your purchases, actively involved in the creation process and understand everything that goes into creating them, you are more likely to treasure your purchase for it’s garment lifetime. Cassandra aspires to make positive change in the fashion industry by continually working towards using sustainable materials in her designs, from utilising dead-stock fabrics and breathing new life into limited edition vintage fabrics to combat the war on waste and make a change for good in the fashion industry, educating consumers on the ethical and environmental footprint and consequences of their purchases.

Lois Hazel I launched Lois Hazel with a desire to change the fashion industry through how I ran my business. Instead of being secretive and closed off about my supply chain, something that is common in the fashion industry, I wanted to be open and honest. I wanted to take you on the journey with me in how my garments are made, the process I go through in designing them. I also wanted to make sure that the pieces I created were bringing a positive impact on the planet and the people, in no way did I want to exploit, abuse or take what didn’t belong to me. I made a commitment that I would always do the best that I could within my means, and as I grew and got bigger, I would make changes
that would allow myself to do better. I made a commitment that I was only going to work with fabrics that had a positive impact on the planet. Natural fibres such as flax, cotton, hemp. Certified organic and sustainable fabrics, and surplus fabrics that were destined for landfill. I ensure that I work with people who care for those they employ and who are passionate about seeing a positive change in this industry. I’m excited to implement even better sustainable processes in the business, invest in better fabrics (fabrics that I can trace right back to the seed that it grew from) and introduce you all to the amazing people who have helped me on my journey so far. Team Timbuktu Team Timbuktu creates clothes made for moving in from recycled plastic bottles. With their sweat wicking and breathable activewear being made from 78% recycled fibres. Their founder (and sole employee) Rhianna was hiking in Patagonia when she was inspired to create a brand that didn’t compromise on style or sustainability, as her hiking clothes compromised on both! With a background in fashion, she knew the ins and outs of how to create a product and the incredibly negative damage that is created for both people and planet with the majority of conventional clothes. As such sustainability is a core value for Team Timbuktu, with all products being made more responsibly utilising recycled and organic fabrics, eliminating plastic packaging from the supply chain and introducing home compostable packaging instead. Homegirls We believe in an Australia where no migrant and refugee women feels alone. We want these women to recognise the value they can add to the local community and feel empowered in doing so. We connect women seeking refuge and asylum with local designers to create and sell jewellery to the Australian market. These collaborations create communities, provide skills and education in designing and selling handmade goods to locals. The income generated in the process gives these women financial agency and confidence to live their best lives.

Happy Skincare Happy Skincare was born (naturally, I suppose) in 2010 to Aaron and Phoebe. “Happy Skincare is a natural healthobsessed mix-a-holic’s dream! And it all started in our kitchen when Aaron mixed up a 100% natural stretch mark cream for Phoebe’s pregnant belly.”
To keep your skin bright and clear you should feed your skin what it needs natural and organic ingredients that have high antioxidant and vitamin content along with a healthy dose of essential fatty acids.
The pair love to mix and together have created a range of vegan, cruelty free, all natural and organic products. Simple & effective. Who could ask for more!

Getting to know HoMie How would you sum up what HoMie is in a sentence or two? HoMie is an initiative that is tackling the root causes of youth homelessness and at the same time providing a progressive alternative means of giving for our customers. What first inspired you to create HoMie? I'd say that what inspired me was a series of experiences. Initially, one of the co-founders and I got together on a fundraising bike ride, that's where we met, and then realized that there was a lot of good that we could do. We ended up fundraising and generated awareness for a remote school in Cambodia and we loved the kind of a tangible and transparent aspect of that. It was really a case of realising we could do something meaningful for a small amount of people and do it well; and then coming back home trying to emulate that idea. You know, tackling an issue that we were seeing a lot in our everyday lives (homelessness). I guess it came about from wanting to learn a lot more about that issue and what we actually do to help. And that led us to talking to people that were experiencing homelessness and asking questions about what could we do, what would make a difference and how can me make a big contribution. Through that, we started a Facebook page called Homeless of Melbourne that was kind of like a 'Humans of New York' model to begin with. We were sharing stories of people, in their own words, but trying to talk about the target issue which unfortunately often has negative connotations and we really wanted to try and challenge that stigma. So that's where the drive and the passion 76
for the issue itself came about and then more deeply for youth homelessness. We channelled the momentum we had into a physical act of giving. And that was a pop-up store we had in Fed Square for a day. We wanted to do something more permanent which ended up being a pop up shop in Melbourne for four weeks which evolved into what it is now: The flagship store on Brunswick street and through that we started to host VIP shopping days which was centred around people having a dignified shopping experience. Following on from that, we had some young people come through our doors on those VIP days. Their feedback was very much 'I would love to get some work experience, I'm finding it really hard to get a job' and we could see that their confidence was low. It was a no brainer for us [to train them] because we were running a youthful brand and trying to tackle the issue we realised there was a real need in this area and value we could add. That's kind of how we've got ourselves to where we are now, furthermore, with the clothing itself initially we put our Facebook page logo on some t shirts and that became such a popular item that we started developing an entire clothing range. We realised it was a great vehicle and medium for us to be able to get our message out there. Plus it was a meaningful way of giving, rather than through a donation but rather getting something in return that people thought looked good as well. Are you able to give an insight into what homelessness is like, particularly for young people? There are so many different forms of homelessness, often what is perpetuated in the media is a stereotypical elderly person with white hair and a beard‌Drugs and alcohol additions‌and it’s such a mis-

portrayal of the reality. The homeless population is 116,000 (across Australia) and more than 38% are young people of 25 or under and 60% is 35 or under. So, the vast majority of our homeless population is actually young people and also it’s not just ‘living rough’, out of those 116,000 around 7,000 are counted as ‘living rough’ but often it is people living in cars, temporary accommodation and couch surfing. These are more prominent forms of homelessness; they are just not as talked about. So, we try to shine a light on that, homelessness is very complex. The main reasons being shortage of affordable housing as number one, and domestic violence is up there as well. Rent and suffering from alcohol abuse is actually very minimal, it’s about 6% out of that 116,000 and I would say almost every single time, there’s a reason. Whether it’s self-medication or trying to levitate your experience. One thing a person said to me that really stuck with me was that ‘it’s like living the same day over and over again.’ You can imagine how boring and mind numbing that existence is.
sense for us to be supporting our local initiative and young people in our city, but exploiting the young people in factories all over the world. With some of the things we have made, we could have sourced cheaper products but we would be compromising on our core values of doing things the right way and being a good business. The pillars of our organisation are about transparency, integrity and respect; and we pride ourselves on that. These principles guide us through difficult times but we have a strong resolve and we have made this conscious decision. So, yes, we could be forfeiting some of the potential profits but in the same token, we are a purpose led organization. So, it's important that that's always at the forefront of our attention.
Each scenario is so different and each person has their own experience of it. But often homelessness is hidden behind closed doors by far and large opposed to people living on the streets. To address the ethical side of your business. Have there been any struggles or barriers that you found trying to do things in a more etihcal way? Yeah, you know, it's never easy. The reality is that retail is a fluctuating industry and you often hear about its troubles in the media so it sometimes lacks stability. But back to the work that we do, do we're working with young people and really intervening at a critical time in their lives and trying to support them in a constructive way and that’s no easy feat as well. We’re trying to change someone’s life and that has it’s complexities… But in the same token, ethical sourcing and production is so important because it wouldn’t make 78

What is on your Christmas playlist? I’m a real movie buff and I am always a sucker for watching Die Hard. I know there is some contention about whether it is a Christmas film or not… And I also enjoy on Christmas night, when it’s all said and done, watching the re-runs of National Lampoon’s Vacation. I’m also a huge fan of ‘the Buble’ so I get that Christmas album going and that’s me set. Do you have any Christmas traditions? Yes, as a family we watch Love Actually, always. My extended family are all massive Tigers fans (ALF) so we actually all watch the 2017 Grand Final and obviously we won in 2019 so this year we will be watching back to back Grand Finals. It’s a bit silly but we love it!
What is something you would like everyone to know about homelessness? It doesn’t discriminate and when you look at the statistics, it is very different to what is perpetuated in the media. Above all else, homelessness is complex. Every person has their own story and has their own needs, goals, dreams etc and the most effective way we can help them is case by case, one person at a time, so that we can have a lasting change. We also work in the preventative space because preventing this from becoming a chronic issue for people is such an important area to focus on as well.

Meet SharperThinker Sophia and Stefan are on a mission to create kits for kids that teach real skills without the plastic parts! What first inspired you to create SharperThinker and why was it important to you to create an ethical business? Stefan and I are in-laws and we both spent time making things with our kids. We'd discuss how disappointing these experiences could be. Often they got these junky science gifts for their birthdays and they were full of plastic and made of flimsy bits. We also felt that they were "dumbed down" projects. We decided to make our own kits that require real skills and challenge. Projects that the kids could use in real life so they wouldn't immediately get chucked into the landfill. The ethical and environmental side just comes from our own personal values. Like everyone, we are just average people trying our best to reduce plastic, compost and use alternative transport. We wanted to do this as much as we could in business too. One of the questions a business mentor asked me early on was: "Is your business going to be purely profit driven or is it an idea/values business?". His point was that ideals and values are nice, but we'd make a lot more money if we focused purely on profit. I guess so. At the expense of what though? We feel that if we focus purely on profits then someone somewhere is paying for it. Usually a person or the environment. What struggles and barriers have you found due to operating in a more ethical way? Oh boy! It is much more expensive because we decided not to get our lasercutting done in Indonesia for a few cents. We support local so our kits can cost anywhere from $10 to $20 just for the laser-cutting and wood. We've now built 92
our own laser-cutter to manage this, but because we have a living wage in NZ (Yay!) we still want to pay properly. This does affect our profit margin because our kits are compared with items made with cheap labour. We need electronics so we get those from China - no one is manufacturing this kind of thing in NZ anymore. Our packaging is quite plain and partly that's because we don't want a lot of soft plastic windows or lots of shiny inks over our cardboard boxes and labels (the poor worms don't like these). We are developing a new "Tinker Tiles" kit which requires a battery box. So then we had to design one that the kids make out of wood because we want to avoid a cheap plastic one! We have also phased out a kit because it used a 9volt battery and we could not justify this as these aren't rechargeable. We want our customers to have the option of using rechargeables. And it would have been easier to use "coin" cell batteries for certain projects but we are dead against them from a safety and environmental perspective. But I'm not complaining. This is how we want to be and we want our customers to feel good too. Are there any ways you still want to improve SharperThinker? There's always room to improve! One of our recent ideas is to use a special battery booster which allows someone to use our kits with 1xAA battery (rechargeable) instead of 3. Currently our best source of eco-ply wood is from a company in Auckland but the wood itself is harvested overseas. I think it would be nice to find an NZ alternative that works for our kits. We just have to take one step at a time.

What is your favourite product in your collection right now? My favourite product to make is our DIY Bluetooth Speaker because I couldn't believe that I made something so cool and that worked first time. Stefan is our designer so I got it at the end and it all just worked. We have three in our house because I use mine to listen to podcasts in the kitchen and our teen boys each have one they cart around. But our new Christmas Sparkle Tree is very glowy and gorgeous on our dinner table at night! Can you share any upcoming plans? We spent a lot of time this year developing our "Tinker Tiles". We have an idea that schools may be able to use these as part of the new Digital Technologies curriculum so we're having a chat with a few people about that. We're also keen to develop some different science kits - not just electronics. We've had some ideas for physics based or maybe carpentry based kits. It's fun having ideas but it does take us a while to get a kit out. What is on your Christmas playlist? Well it's not very modern but every year I love listening to Handel's Messiah. I'm
94
not sure that my family appreciate my attempts to reach the very high notes. We're pretty big on fantasy and Sci-Fi in our house so I'll be re-reading all of Naomi Novak's books and maybe even Brandon Mull's 'Fablehaven' (for kids but aren't kid's books so restful and great?). I absolutely loved "Mean Mums" - a series made by TV3 and now on demand so I'm hoping they will make more! It might be time for another Dr Who round - ooh or BBC's Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth AKA "The Real Darcy". Do you have any Christmas traditions? I made a felt advent calendar about 15 years ago. It's quite ugly but it's part of the tradition now. So we'll get that out and fill it with chocolates (in tinfoil so we can bunch it all together and recycle of course). For a few years we wrote ideas to do on each day but it got very stressful trying to get them done! So now I just put in a chocolate for everyone (adults too) and it's a little celebration at the end of the day. We also read from the gospel of Luke on Christmas Eve just to remind us what it's all about. Our tree goes up on 1st Dec. We usually have a real kiwi Christmas with the whole Sharpe whanau at Ruakaka BBQ, salads, surfing and laughs. Looking forward to it already!

Stefan is married to Miki, our beautiful Japanese family member. So for years they lived in Japan and never celebrated Christmas. They were excited to do decorations and presents and holidays when they arrived. My wider family are vegetarian so every year we have a big completely vegetarian Christmas feast. People actually feel sorry for me when they hear this but already I can already taste my mum’s creamy mushroom and pine nut risotto, my sister’s amazing filo parcels and nut curry and then there’s the roast capsicum salad and parmesan aubergine bake...I don’t feel sorry for me at all.
96
What is the best or most memorable Christmas gift you have received and who was it from? Hard question! I don't really love "stuff". We now buy one "big family gift" e.g. last year's was a trampoline. The year before was a family tent. As an adult, the best gifts have been useable such as food, plants or games and both sides of our family do that kind of present for adults. I do like making and crafting things so one year my family gave me a set of lovely ink pens and a colouring book. I've been surprised how much I enjoy colouring - it's very zen feeling.

SharperThinker In-laws Sophia and Stefan Sharpe run SharperThinker. We live in different parts of New Zealand and both have teenage sons.
children start to recognise what these look like. No little lightbulbs for us! We use LEDs and resistors - the electronics children will see inside any modern appliance.
We both love making things and got frustrated with the quality of educational kits in the shops. Our kids often got science kits as presents and found them too easy, too plastic, too boring or too ugly!
We also love the environment and are both greenies - so we decided to use wood (eco-ply) wherever we can. We use 100% paper packaging and are working so that the components in our kits can be easily re-used - which is far better than recycled (which in turn is better than the dump).
We decided to make kits that make something you actually use, or else allow for open-ended free play. We also wanted to use modern electronics and designs so

Meet the Maker... Medita Chocolates
What first inspired you to create Medita Chocolates and why was it important to you to create plant-based chocolates that could be enjoyed by those with special dietary requirements?
I trained as a Pastry Chef in Melbourne, London and Paris for 7 and a half years and I loved eating and making beautiful desserts. It became clear during my training just how many people had allergies or were vegan. It never sat well with me that an experience like having dessert or walking into a Chocolate shop somewhere incredible like Paris or Brussels and eating anything you wanted couldn’t be enjoyed by everyone. I feel really strongly about everyone getting to enjoy the same amazing taste experience. After becoming vegan, I was determined to keep the chocolates in my life and make them as accessible as possible to everyone else. What struggles and barriers have you found due to operating ethically and adhering to specific dietary requirements? I have always worked in high end restaurants so the cost of high quality and ethical produce wasn't a shock. It's more the tweaking of my recipes to keep everything vegan and free from dairy, gluten and soy. I've wanted to use popping candy and souffletine in my chocolates previously and they aren't suitable. I didn't realise popping candy wasn't vegan!

Are there any ways you still want to improve your brand? Yes, I want to make my packaging more ethical - it's a work in progress. One day I'd love to be a solar powered business! What is your favourite product in your collection right now? I love my oranges and the Christmas Tree flavour - maple pecan praline. What is on your Christmas playlist? Don't Shoot Me Santa - The Killers. We also have a tradition of watching either Die Hard or Jingle all the Way each Christmas. I listen to the Chocolat series on Audible in my kitchen because they are beautiful books and I love hearing about the chocolates while making chocolates. Do you have any Christmas traditions? Yes, I write Christmas Cards to my friends from London! What is the best or most memorable Christmas gift you have received and who was it from? I had to think about that one! I got Feast by Nigella one year - and I love that book! I am slowly veganising the chapter on Chocolate cakes! That Chocolate Chestnut Cake, Yum!

The Vegan Dairy The Vegan Dairy is a family business. A business about everything handmade, healthy, and wholesome. A business born out of a love of all things cheese! The Vegan Dairy began by accident. Brittany was working as a dairy cheesemaker for her mum, whose own cheesemaking business began as a way for her to cope with the grief of losing her youngest son, Brittany’s youngest brother, in a sudden accident. Brittany and Bronson were vegetarian at the time and after two years of Brittany bringing home copious amounts of handmade cheese from work Bronson decided to ditch dairy. So Brittany went on a mission to make dairy-free cheese for Bronson to enjoy at home using the cheesemaking techniques she had learned at work.

Treat Dreams We dream of changing the world through treats. Where quitting dairy doesn't mean quitting taste. Where every happy bite supports cacao farmers, animals and the planet. Where chocolate and treats are silky smooth, creamy and OMG delicious. That world is in your hands right now. Treat Dreams Founder Lis is lactose intolerant and unable to consume many of the treats produced by other makers. After spending 15+ years struggling with pain when eating dairy products, then eventually becoming vegan in 2013, Lis set about recreating treats in a way that maintained the classic taste! Our focus is maintaining the rich, decadent tastes of non vegan treats, and replacing animal ingredients with plant based ones.Because of this focus, our taste testing starts with non vegans. If they believe it tastes the same, it goes on the menu! Please allow me to introduce Treat Dream’s new range of Dream bars, made using direct and fair trade chocolate!

Evagreen Baking Evagreen began in my home as a means to provide myself, friends and family with delicious vegan desserts. I wanted to make something that looked familiar, tasted delicious and catered to various dietary restrictions as well as aligning with my core values. Here at Evagreen Baking, we believe that a treat should always be a treat, however we understand that our desserts are way too good to only stop at one, so after many alterations of our recipes we have
finally come to our magic sweet spot that makes our treats delicious while still being nutritious. Being plant based, our treats are naturally loaded with healthy fats and omegas. We use bio-dynamic flour and organic ingredients where possible. We pack our products full of fruits, vegetables and healthy nuts while keeping our sugar levels low. Life is too short for guilt, so we’re here to be sure you’re always feeling good about what you’re putting into your body!

Cutlery holder
by Here and There Makers ~
Method ~
Cut two rectangles for cutlery pouch 10” x 24” in two complementary or contrasting fabrics (it is fine to use all one fabric if preferred). Cut two squares for matching serviette 8” x 8” in the same fabrics as the pouch. Cut a 20” length of cord or ribbon. Tie a knot on each end if using cord to stop it unravelling or if using ribbon it can be knotted or melted on each end to stop fraying. Pin rectangles and squares at each corner with pretty sides of fabric facing together. Place pins 4” apart on one long side of rectangle and 2” apart on one side of the square to leave a gap in sewing for turning the fabric right side out. Sew a 1/4” seam around all 4 sides of rectangle and square leaving a gap between pins on one side. Trim a little triangle off each corner to assist with getting a nice point at corners after turning. Turn rectangle and square sewn fabrics pretty sides out through the gap in side seams. A chopstick pocked into the corners can help. Press seams flat with a hot iron. Ensure 1/4” seam is ironed inside turning gap so it looks the same as the rest of the seam. Fold up a 6” flap at the bottom of the rectangle making sure if fabric has a one 116
directional design that it the pattern on the outside of the flap is up the right way. Pin flap at each side. On the right hand side insert cord or ribbon folded in half 1” below top of flap with cut ends to outside and fold tucked under flap. Measure 1 1/2” from left side of folded up flap 4 x and place a pin or mark at each measurement. Sew a 1/8th or narrow topstitch from the bottom left of pouch up the long side, top and then down second side. Remember to back tack / reverse stitch at start and finish to secure your sewing. Sew at 1 1/2” intervals from top of flap to bottom of flap back tacking at the start and finish. To finish serviette sew 1/8th” or a narrow topstitch around all 4 sides of pressed square. Insert knife, fork/spork, spoon and reusable straw or chopsticks into pouch pockets Fold finished serviette in 1/3rds and insert in last wider pocket of pouch. Fold top of rectangle in half over cutlery pouch, roll and tie with either cord and your done!
The cutlery pouch is great for picnics, school, work, camping and eating out. The opened out pouch can also double as a placemat when out and about.

Beeswax Wraps by The Eco Society
~
Ingredients ~ • 115gms Beeswax • 3 tbsp Jojoba oil
• 20gms Powdered pine rosin (or you can crush it up yourself) • 100% cotton fabric - lightweight • Pinking shears (normal scissors will also work) • Ruler & pen (this is to measure your shapes) • Baking paper & baking tray (make sure your fabric fits on your tray) • Large natural bristle paint brush (plastic bristles are difficult to use) • Oven (or iron depending on how you wish to make these) • Saucepan and metal or glass bowl • Stirring stick (either a wooden spoon or a metal knife works fine) • Metal tongs • Clothes horse (or similar) & pegs for drying Before you get started, please note that this can get a bit messy - the pine rosin is very sticky and can be difficult to remove from stuff, so I suggest that you don’t use your very best equipment. 118
~
Method ~
1: Preheat your oven to 110°C
2: Mark out your fabric and cut to your desired sizes using pinking shears. Guideline: Small - 16cm x 16cm, Medium 25cm x 25cm, Large - 32cm x 32cm. You can also cut these into circles. 3: Melt the beeswax, powdered pine rosin and Jojoba oil together in a double boiler (like you would for chocolate). To do this, bring water to the boil in a saucepan and reduce to a simmer. Add a metal or glass bowl over the saucepan with all the ingredients and stir regularly to ensure they are mixed together. 4: While this is melting, line the baking tray with baking paper and place your piece of fabric flat onto the baking tray. Top tip: make sure the baking paper is larger than your fabric and that the baking tray is larger than your largest wrap as well, I use the guideline of at least 5cm on all sides.
5: Once the ingredients are melted together to form a liquid, brush the mixture onto your fabric. The mixture dries quickly so you will need to work fast and be careful not to apply the mixture too thickly as it will run/drip later. 6: Place in the oven for 5mins – this ensures the beeswax mix is totally infused into the fabric. You can also do this process using an iron by placing the beeswax covered fabric between two sheets of baking paper and ironing over top. Be careful that the beeswax mix does not go outside of the baking sheets and onto the iron! 7: After 5mins in the oven, take the tray out and use the metal tongs to remove the fabric. Make sure you grab 2 corners as the fabric can stick together and give you an uneven coating. Hang the fabric on the clothes horse to dry, this should only take a few minutes. And you are finished!

Christmas crackers by Be Kind Coco
A simple home DIY that will instantly add a festive feel to your home. Kids are welcome to help but they will need a sharp knife to cut up the fruit so watch them at all times.
~
What you need ~
• Cardboard toilet paper rolls • spare wrapping paper (about 18x27cm) I used the wrapping from my toilet roll folded in half. • Pieces of string or rubber bands. 2 for each cracker • Cracker fillings: I used lip balm, chocolates wrapped in a little bag and, of course, an awful Christmas joke!
~
Method ~
1: Place your filling inside your toilet roll, making sure everything fits neaty inside. 2: Put the filled roll on to the middle of your wrapping paper touching a side. If your paper is damaged on one side, start here. 3: Roll the paper around your toilet roll, making sure it stays firmly in the middle. 4: Twist the sides and secure each one with string or a rubber band.
And that’s it! Repeat the process for each cracker and have fun!

Dried decorations by Be Kind Coco
A simple home DIY that will instantly add a festive feel to your home. Kids are welcome to help but they will need a sharp knife to cut up the fruit so watch them at all times.
~
What you need ~
• As many oranges (or other citrus fruits) as you like! I found I got about 5 slices from 1 large orange. • A sharp knife • Baking trays and greaseproof paper • An oven
~
Method ~
1: Cut your fruit into thin slices (around 1cm). Thicker slices will take longer to dry out, thinner slices are the more likely to burn or breakdown. If you make any mistakes, remove the evidence by eating them! 2: Place each slice onto an oven tray lined with grease proof paper. They should not be overlapping so you may need a few trays. 3: Heat the slices in the oven on one side for 2-3 hours on a low temperature (I use 80oc), then flip each one and heat for a further 2-3 hours. Your house will smell like oranges and that is only a good thing. 4: If the orange slices still feel a little moist, you can keep them in the oven longer, just keep an eye on them and flip at equal intervals. 5: When the slices are completely dried, use something small to pierce holes in each one and tie on a piece of sting.
All that is left to do is decorate them around your home! I find they look most beautiful in the light and on a Christmas tree. They also make great festive trimmings around candles or other pieces. 122

Lip balm
by Chelsey from Eco Mindset This deeply moisturising natural lip balm is quick to make, consists of simple ingredients, and makes a lovely gift for anyone! This recipe will yield enough lip balm for two small pots or one larger pot.
~
Ingredients ~
•1 1/2 tablespoons of virgin coconut oil •1 1/2 tablespoons of grated bees wax • 1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil • 10 drops of essential oil ( I used 5 drops each of grapefruit and lavender, but peppermint oil is popular alternative)
~
Method ~
1: Combine coconut oil, olive oil and beeswax in a small glass bowl or ramekin 2: Fill a small pot about 3 cm high with water and bring it to a boil 3: Carefully sit the bowl inside the pot of water and let the ingredients melt together. 4: Once liquefied, carefully remove the bowl and give the mixture a stir. Let it cool a minute before stirring in essential oils 5: Pour mixture in to a clean container and let the lip balm set until firm.
*Shelf life can vary but expect at least 6 months, change in smell or texture can indicate that the product is going off.

Body Scrub by The Eco Society
~
Ingredients ~
• Jar or Container (I like to use a repurposed glass jar) • 1 cup of Raw Sugar • 1/2 cup of Coconut Oil (in a glass jar, because we don’t like plastic) • 15 drops of Lavender Essential Oil • 1/2 teaspoon Vanilla Essence
126
~
Method ~
1: Melt your coconut oil (if needed) my placing the glass jar in hot water. 2: In a medium sized bowl, mix together all the ingredients. If it looks too runny add more sugar but make sure it is not too dry as the coconut oil will solidify again. Have a smell and add extra lavender or vanilla depending on your preference. Once you are happy with the consistency and fragrance, put it into a jar and voila, you have your very own home-made sugar scrub!
Orange Spray by The Eco Society

Do you wanna build a
Snowman
by Eva from Evagreen Baking We wanted to get creative this Christmas and try something a little different. We hope you enjoy making your snowmen as much as we did! Merry Christmas from the Evagreen Team
~
What you need ~
• Bliss balls (home-made of course!) • White Chocolate (We used Sweet William) • Snowman decorations! (We used black sesame seeds for the eyes, carrots for the nose and some fondant for the scarf)
~
Method ~
1: Take your favourite bliss ball recipe and roll two different size balls, a larger one (30g) for the bottom and a smaller one (20g) for the head of the snowman. 2: Give your bliss balls some time to set in the fridge to make the assembling process easier 3: In the meantime, take your favourite white chocolate (we use Sweet Williams because it’s delicious and vegan, YUM!) and melt down. To do this, grab a small pot of boiling water and place over the stove, in a separate bowl (preferably a deep stainless-steel bowl) break your chocolate up into small pieces and keep stirring until the chocolate has melted. 136
4: Next comes the assembling part of the snowmen, grab a wooden stick and starting from the bottom of the stick, slide the smaller ball (the head) onto it, follow with the larger ball (the body.) 5: Next, pick up your stick and dip your snowman into the pot of melted chocolate. Once it’s completely coated place on a sheet of baking paper to set. Time to decorate your snowman! 6: Place the eyes on the snowman as soon as you have finished coating him with chocolate, then let them set in the fridge for a while before placing our carrot nose and once they’re fully set, place the scarf around the snowman and cut the wooden sticks to make them less noticeable!
