MEDIA GUIDE
Dear hockey fans! Today, probably as never before, we need your support. We really had a hard season, in which we failed to fulfill our main task – promotion to the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi. But we shouldn’t sprinkle ashes upon our heads. We need to move on, learning from mistakes and building a strong team, capable of meeting the most difficult challenges. With all this, we are on the right way. A new young team is being formed. Great prospects are open before the young talented players, for whom the 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship will become their first one for the national team. During the recent exhibition games they have already proved what they worth. Our team is ready for the World Championship both physically and psychologically. We had a good training camp, during which we fulfilled everything what we had planned. And now we need to bring everything what we have learned to life and show what we are capable of. I can’t promise to win every match, but I promise that all our players will do their best to make it.

Team BELARUS in 2012-2013 Season In November 2012 the Belarusian Ice Hockey Association appointed Andrei Skabelka – former National Team player – as a Head coach of the National Team. At this post he substituted Finnish specialist Kari Heikkila. The contract with Andrei Skabelka is signed until the end of the 2014 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship, which will take place in Minsk. Prior to his appointment the Belarusian coach led the team as an acting coach during two friendly games versus team Ukraine in Kiev on November 3-4. Then the team was compiled of the players from the national championship. Belarus celebrated victory in the first game – 2:1 and ended the second one in a draw – 2:2. The official debut of Andrei Skabelka as a Head coach was the international tournament “Arosa Challenge” in Switzerland, where team Belarus lost to the hosts with the score 1:3 and then to team Norway in the bronze medal game – 1:4. However, the roster of the Belarusian team was far from being optimal. The Team’s official start of the season was the Olympic qualification. Unfortunately, the team failed to fulfill the task of promotion to the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi. In the final Olympic qualification in Vojens, Denmark (7-10 February), which featured Teams Denmark, Belarus, Slovenia and Ukraine, Belarus occupied only 2nd place behind the unexpected winners – Team Slovenia.
The starting game of the tournament Belarus vs Slovenia turned out to be deciding. Belarus lost to their opponents with the score 2:4. The following two victories over teams Ukraine 6:0 and Denmark 3:2 were just a small consolation, while Slovenia defeated the hosts Team Denmark in their second game – 2:1 thus making it to Sochi and then Team Ukraine – 6:1. Before the 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship team Belarus played a series of exhibition games within the Euro Hockey Challenge tournament. Team Belarus defeated team Germany twice in Minsk and Soligorsk (5-6 April) - 4:3 SO, 4:2, then shared victories with teams Slovakia in Zhlobin and Bobruisk (12-13 April) - 0:3, 4:3 and Latvia in Riga (19-20 April) - 3:0, 1:4. On April 26-28 Belarus took part in “Slovakia Cup” in Bratislava, where the team became the Cup holder, having defeated teams Slovakia (3:2) and Norway (4:3) on shootouts. The 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship, as a year before, will take place on May 3-19 in the capitals of Sweden and Finland – Stockholm and Helsinki. Team Belarus will play in group S against teams Canada, Sweden, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Norway, Denmark and Slovenia.

BELARUS Team History Belarus Men’s National Team played its first official international game against team Ukraine in Minsk on November 7, 1992 and lost – 1:4. Then our country hosted the IIHF World Championship qualifying tournament. Apart from Belarus and Ukraine it also featured team Kazakhstan.
Team Belarus also took part in 3 Olympic Games (1998, 2002, 2010). It achieved its best Olympic result in Salt Lake City in 2002 when team Belarus sensationally occupied 4th place, having claimed victory over team Sweden in the quarterfinal with the score 4:3.
Despite a victory in the second game versus the Kazakh team with the score 3:1, Belarus failed to promote to the World Championship Division “C”, having occupied only 3rd place because of the worst goals’ difference. Bellarus team’s way to the top division of the IIHF World Championship lasted for 6 years. The team took part in thirteen toplevel IIHF World Championships (1998-2001, 2003, 2005-till now). The best achievement so far has been 6th place at the 2006 IIHF World Championship in Riga, Latvia.
At the previous 2012 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in Helsinki and Stockholm Belarusian team occupied 14th place. Currently Belarus occupies 13th place in the IIHF rankings.

2014 IIHF ICE HOCKEY WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP On May 9-25, 2014 Minsk will host the 78th IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. The decision on holding the tournament in Minsk was taken at the IIHF Annual Congress on May 8, 2009 in Bern, Switzerland. Among the former Soviet countries, it was Russia to host the IIHF World Championships two times (in 2000 and 2007) and Latvia (2006). Since 1930, the Ice Hockey World Championships have been held annually (although it wasn’t held in 1940-1946 because of World War II). Before 1970 in the Olympic year World Championships were not held. The winners of the Olympic Games automatically became world champions. In 1972 and 1976 World Championships were held separately from the Olympic Games, and in 1980, 1984, 1988 they were not held at all. To date, the hockey tournament at the Winter Olympics and the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championships are held as separate events.

2014 IIHF ICE HOCKEY WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP LOGO Back in 2008, the Belarusian Ice Hockey Association announced a contest for the logo of the championship. About 200 applications were submitted for participation in the contest. The logo combined a hockey theme and national colors. It looks dynamic, bright and memorable. The presentation of the logo was held in March 2009.
MASCOT
The World Championship already has its own mascot. This is a bison – one of the symbols of Belarus. The official mascot of the 2014 IIHF WM reflects peculiarities of the national culture and corresponds to the ice hockey game. It demonstrates strength and power and has a clear message to millions of fans and spectators all over the world. It also arouses bright and positive associations. In April 2013 the mascot was given a name as a result of the national contest «Think up a name for the mascot!» – Volat. Over 3,500 people voted online to choose it among the top-10. The name Volat, which can be translated from the Belarusian language as «a mighty man, hero», sounds almost the same in every language. So it will be easy for tourists to write and pronounce this name correctly.
VISAS
In January 2012, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko signed a decree on visa-free entry to Belarus for official participants of the 2014 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship and foreign tourists for the period from April 25 till May 31, 2014. The ground for visa-free entry is the presence of original or electronic ticket to the games of the 2014 IIHF WM.
