It’s been a summer for exploring the delights within these shores – and autumn promises more opportunities to do the same. Foreign travel remains a step too far for many of us and that means bumper chances to explore more and make memories that are less Ooh lala and more Ooh, Armagh! With the easing of restrictions, many of us couldn’t wait to get out and about and revisit favourite places while others were more hesitant. Now, with a further relaxation of the rules, life is beginning to feel more normal again. However, with different regimes on either side of the border, it’s best to do your homework before setting off on an adventure. See page 30 for the latest information on what’s possible, what’s permissible and what’s advisable. With that information under your belt, you can decide whether you want to stay north or head across the border – or go on, why not do both? Autumn offers such rich pickings when it comes to day trips, short breaks and longer stays. For those with children, you’ll find plenty to delight on the weekends, half term or halloween. For those not shackled by term times, every day is an opportunity to stage a great escape. As you’ll see from the following pages, there are excellent deals in store. The summer months may see the seaside

steal the show, and while the coast is a tonic at any time of year, autumn sees the countryside truly come into its own. Set out on a scenic drive and revel in the glorious riches of Mother Nature’s yellow, orange and red autumn wardrobe. The Dublin Mountains, the rolling hills and valleys of Tyrone, the lush fields of the Boyne Valley and historic Meath all beckon. Or how about heading to the orchard county in time for the apple harvest? Armagh’s Food and Cider events are back on the menu and perfect for foodies. There is more to see and do, as restrictions continue to ease, with the return of live music worth celebrating, even if it is a more subdued affair. Check out the listings wherever you are heading as autumn is prime festival season and who isn’t aching for live entertainment after all this time? And with outdoor performances on both sides of the border, and theatres open in the North, a cultural break is another possibility. With the pandemic far from over, many of us are managing a balancing act between getting out and about but being vigilant and continuing to sanitise our hands, avoid close contact with people and keep our masks on indoors. If you’re anxious about a trip, why not plan an outdoorsy break to a remote corner of the country. Sounds like the perfect way to enjoy the season!

Cork native casts a bird’s eye view over Belfast There’s nothing like seeing your city through fresh eyes, and Covid has certainly impacted the popularity and appeal of the staycation. With that in mind, Maeve Richardson spoke to Lauren McCarthy, a 24 year old Publishing Account Manager from Cork, about her recent visit to the Northern capital.

Belfast Telegraph | 27 August 2021 Botanic Gardens in glorious full bloom

What brought you there recently? Much like everyone else, Covid travel restrictions eliminated the possibility of going abroad for a family holiday. Most of my family had never been to Belfast before so we decided to go somewhere new for a change. What was the best moment of the trip? The best moment was being able to sit down inside for a meal with all my family. Afterwards we went to a bar with live music, which felt amazing. Everyone there was in such a good mood and the atmosphere was really uplifting. We also went to the Botanic Gardens and went on the ferris wheel. As terrifying as it was, it gave us a beautiful view over the city.

When did you go to Belfast and who did you go with? I went at the start of August for a couple of days with my immediate family and members of my extended family. Have you been to Belfast before? Do you have any connection with the city? I have been lucky enough to go to Belfast a few times over the years, especially when I was a teenager. My childhood friend and her family moved to Northern Ireland when I was 14 so they used to adopt me for a week every summer and bring me around the city. I have lots of lovely memories going shopping in the city centre and visiting places like the Titanic museum.

What was the worst moment of the trip? There were 11 of us, including four children. This proved to be a bit awkward trying to find two tables for us all - especially when everyone was hungry and tired from the day! Did you experience anything unexpected or new during your visit? I had forgotten how beautiful Queen’s University was. The red brick of the main building is really impressive and the campus is located in a great area right next to the Botanic Gardens. We also got to see Somnyama Ngonyama, the name of South African photographer Zanele Muholi’s work, exhibited by The Naughton Gallery. Belfast also hosts a lot of beautiful street art. This was an unexpected treat!

The ferris wheel in Botanic Gardens What was your impression of the locals? Everyone we met was so friendly and accommodating. We got lost a couple of times but everyone we asked for directions was very helpful. Where in Belfast have you been that you would recommend to a friend? I would definitely recommend visiting the Belfast Titanic. The museum is a remarkable building which can be found on the slipways where the ship itself was built. The museum is extremely interactive and a favourite of kids and adults alike.

Coffee on the terrace at AC Hotel Belfast

TAKE A BREAK ONTHEWATERFRONT The Naughton Gallery at Queens hosted an exhibition by Zanele Muholi Where would you like to go again? I would like to visit the Ulster Museum again. There is such a wide range of exhibitions from dinosaur skeletons to art, that there is plenty to keep you entertained for an entire day.

Where would you like to visit in Belfast that you haven’t yet? I would like to take a tour of the Belfast suburbs and visit the Crumlin Road Gaol. There is such an interesting history in the building so I would love to see it firsthand.

With a unique riverside location, Marriott’s 4-star AC Hotel Belfast is a breath of fresh air for city staycations. Enjoy easy parking, design-led interiors, comfy beds, iconic views, outside terrace and destination restaurant. Step out of the hotel for leisurely walks on the Maritime Mile that links historic Titanic Quarter with Cathedral Quarter, the social and cultural hub of the city. Explore the city on foot or discover Belfast and beyond with the Giant’s

Causeway, Derry’s city walls, the Mourne Mountains and Enniskillen’s lakes all an easy day trip from the hotel. Built with a designers’ eye with thoughtful touches of luxury, the hotel is bathed in natural light by day and by night enjoys the buzz of ‘Novelli at City Quays’ for an evening of good company and great food. Autumn, season of mists and mellow memory-making

Who doesn’t love the thrill of throwing the bags in the car and leaving everyday life behind? We’ve been so deprived of breaks over the past 18 months, it’s hard to resist the lure of the road and with so many wonderful offers available and an incredible range of holiday type to choose from, resistance ought to be futile. It’s good for body, mind and spirit to step outside the confines of our homeplaces and breathe in different air for a change. Book in for an escape with someone special, go with a (small) group of friends or take the family away for some much needed fun. Make it an outdoor adventure with water sports or hiking at heart, delve into the history and heritage of somewhere you’ve always wanted to explore, or take refuge in a luxury hideaway and lose yourself in the spa treatments and delectable dining experiences. The best of it is, you can find everything you need on your doorstep. AWESOME ANTRIM History and heritage come alive in Antrim. While everyone knows the immense appeal of the Causeway Coast and Glens, there’s more to explore. Discover Bronze-age standing stones and try to unravel their enigmatic carvings. Climb a Norman motte at Donegore for jaw-dropping views over the surrounding area. Step into rural Ulster in the 1800s at Sentry Hill or feel the heat of industrial archaeology at Patterson’s Spade Tyrella Beach, Newcastle in autumn

Mill. Or simply soak up the ambiance at Antrim Castle Gardens, stop off at Shane’s Castle – a must for Game of Thrones fans – or rest your weary nerves with views over Lough Neagh and Ram’s Island. With autumn drawing near, plan some walks through some of the spectacular scenery in this neck of the woods, such as Crumlin Glen with its lovely waterfall, Carnmoney Hill for spectacular views over Belfast Lough and Randalstown Forest among many.

DUCK INTO DOWN Head for the coast for brisk autumn walks watching the brave tackle the waves and the luxury of warming up afterwards over a cup (or glass) of something hot. There are so many options along north and south Down, you can base yourself anywhere and be sure of a good break. Murlough, Tyrella and Cranfield are always popular and if you want to be immersed among autumnal trees, Castlewellan and Tollymore Forest Parks are resplendent in their autumn finery. Castlewellan Castle is a must for history buffs. Built by the Annesley family in the 1850s, its lakeside location is always worth a visit, whether you’re taking snaps or riding by on the cycle trails. If you want to go from a remarkably large maze to a very old one, head the short distance from Castlewellan to Seaforde Garden and Tropical Butterfly House (no pre-booking required) and enjoy the peace and tranquillity. For a taste of culture, head for Bangor this September, for the 30th Aspects literature festival. APPLE OF YOUR EYE The Orchard County becomes a favourite at this time of year when the apple harvest is in and the apple and cider making concerns are at full tilt. Famed for its history, you can explore the past thoroughly with tours of Navan Fort, either of Armagh city’s two St Patrick’s Cathedrals or Armagh County Museum with its children’s trail. Sample a VR tour at Armagh Planetarium and indulge in some indoor stargazing. If you are looking for somewhere to go on a

Sunday, the National Trust’s Ardress House is open for self-guided tours, no prebooking required. The Argory house is also open for tours on selected days. Freshen up at Lady Ada’s tea-room while the children play in the adventure playground. For gorgeous autumn finery make for The Ring of Gullion forest park in south Armagh, Gosford Forest Park and Castle, near Markethill, or Lough Neagh Discovery Centre at Oxford Island Nature Reserve which also has children’s play areas. At Lurgaboy Adventure Centre there’s everything from archery, to high ropes to a zip wire - perfect if you have teenagers. MAIDEN CITY AND COUNTY It’s 400 years since those famous Derry Walls rose from the ground, marking out the boundaries of the old town. It’s in the area where St Columba founded a monastery in the 6th century. If you want to explore the city’s history, start with the Tower Museum, within the walls, followed by the Guildhall. If you like a market, the Walled City Market has returned to Guildhall Square on the first Saturday of the month. Outside the city, you’ll be spoilt for choice of stunning scenery, whether you head for the coast or inland. The viewpoint at Binevenagh Mountain is a must for Instamagic shots with its lake and cliffs looming over Downhill, Castlerock and Benone beach. Inland, the scenery is fabulous, especially around the unspoilt Sperrins and there’s no shortage of forest parks to enjoy. Why not take a walk through Portglenone Forest Park, then visit Seamus Heaney Homeplace at nearby Bellaghy. Time it right and you might make some of the events in its Autumn Arts Programme. UNSPOILT TYRONE It may not be well known as a staycation destination but County Tyrone has its share of unspoilt natural beauty and excellent hospitality. The kings of Ulster were from these parts and the views from the Hill of the O’Neill at Dungannon are spectacular. For a taste of autumnal paradise, park up

Warm up over a cuppa in Derry~~Londonderry at Gortin Glen Forest Park, outside Omagh and feast your eyes on the beautiful Sperrin views. There are many walked trails, however, you can also drive the scenic route and stop at the viewpoints along the way. The Ulster American Folk Park, outside Omagh, has reopened (prebooking required) and charts the Irish emigration story. Other attractions for the history buff visiting Tyrone are the homesteads of no fewer than two US presidents – Ulysses S. Grant and Woodrow Wilson. Then there’s Lissan House, near Cookstown, former home of the Staples family, Baronscourt Estate in Newtownstewart and Blessingbourne Country Estate near Fivemiletown. Todd’s Leap activity centre, near Ballygawley is popular with thrill-seekers with its freefall zone, zipline and more. FANTASTIC FERMANAGH The Fermanagh Lakelands are a shimmering haven at this time of year, with the autumn colours reflecting off the water. This beautiful county boasts Ireland’s only island town and Enniskillen has recently added hydrobikes to its on-the-water attractions. Take a drive along the shores of Lough Erne and feel your stress melt away. There are plenty of scenic viewpoints, from the lovely Navar Forest Park to the popular with locals Topped Mountain. The Marble Arch Caves have reopened and you can now walk the Cladagh Glen from there while Cuilcagh Mountain with its famous Stairway to Heaven is just next door. Another major attraction, Florence Court House is also in the vicinity. If you’re in need of more history, the musuem at 600 year old Enniskillen Castle will see you right. For active children, the Share Discovery Village is a must for water and land-based activities.

It was from here that the O’Neill family ruled Ulster for over 300 years, and visitors will hear all about Hugh O’Neill’s complicated relationship with the English monarchy, the many famous battles and sieges which marked the period, before the exodus of O’Neill and others in what became known as the Flight of the Earls. This led the way to the Plantation of Ulster with Scottish and English settlers, marking the end of Gaelic Ireland and the transition towards the society we know today. This fascinating period of history is capsulated in a permanent indoor exhibition in Ranfurly House, with expert guides available to share all the stories and tales from the time. But it’s not just about the history, as visitors of all ages will be mesmerised by the breathtaking views from the Hill, with seven of the nine counties of the province of Ulster clearly visible, offering up spectacular views of landmarks including Lough Neagh, the Mourne mountains, and the

ways to take an autumn break

Wide-eyed wonder 2Shhhh Perhaps rather than needing one, you’re 3If all these restrictions have left you with

Taking a stroll along the East Strand, Portrush Planning for autumn is a different matter than summer when you optimistically look forward to long sunny days and balmy evenings. Autumn breaks require walking boots, a raincoat, and a wardrobe that has enough layers to cope with a heatwave or a hailstorm. Whatever the weather, it’s all about being away from home, not having to do all the chores you normally do and switching off from all the burdens that daily drag us down. And of course there are so many decisions. Who do you want to go with? Just your other half or take the kids? Go with the extended family or a group of friends? What if they haven’t been vaccinated? Thankfully, you don’t have to have taken a PCR test to cross the border in either direction, but you do need to bring proof of vaccination along with ID if you want to dine indoors in the South. Here are our tips for planning an autumn break.

already driven to distraction? In that case it’s peace, quiet and tranquillity that will be top of your list. You may feel like going off on your own on one of the St Patrick’s Trail caminos and overnighting in south Down. Or take someone soothing – your partner, a relative or a friend – it doesn’t matter so long as they are not the sort of people that create drama. Tiptoe off together to a quiet corner of the country, armed with books and a blanket to throw over your knees so that you can sit outside and watch the stars. Choose somewhere with a helpful waiter who will supply you with drinks while you rest. Once a day, venture out for a leisurely walk through a secluded forest park or along a waterside. Being near trees and water are both good for restoring shattered nerves. Let the highlight of your day be dinner and let it last for at least thrice as long as dinner at home. Crawl off to bed, content that someone else is doing the tidying up and all you need to do is find your place in the book and immerse yourself until you nod off.

cabin fever, a sightseeing break is for you. Holidays tend to be more memorable if you have learned something about the place you’ve visited so book in for a guided tour – it can be an outdoor walking tour if you prefer. While packing in too many activities may be counterproductive, in that you can’t remember what all you’ve seen by the end of the day, having one or two activities in the day will make you feel as if you are learning something and making the most of your time. Tours of stately homes can be very engaging, but don’t rule anything out. The Marble Arch Caves, Dublin’s Viking Splash tours, the many guided tours of Belfast are all fun options and informative. Find a destination that offers wonderful autumnal scenery or a good mix of attractions, shops and places to dine out for a varied few days away.

long winter nights give you the shakes, you might fancy an outdoorsy adventure break.

Consider it a last hoorah before digging out the hot water bottles. Activities can range from slightly challenging hikes or cycling that you can organise under your own steam through to abseiling, coasteering or white water rafting that require the services of the professionals. A happy medium might be a stint on a paddle board or canoe or horse trekking through countryside or along a beach. Part of the pleasure of an adventure is the anticipation of the hot shower afterwards and the fun of reliving the experience over a slap up feed. leisure 5Luxe For some of us, the ultimate escape is

break might fit the bill, to Belfast, Derry~Londonderry or Dublin. The theatres and concert venues in the South hope to reopen soon and in Northern Ireland they are back and ready to entertain. There are plenty of outdoor options if you aren’t quite willing or ready to embrace indoor entertainments yet. You don’t need to head for a city for a cultural fix, of course as regional theatres are back in business in September, from the Alley Theatre in Strabane to the Theatre at the Mill in Newtownabbey and beyond. It may be covid-era theatre, with many opting for cabaret seating, mandatory masks and no drinks, but it’s still live entertainment and that’s always worth a round of applause.

Whether you’re a loved up couple or a couple of friends, it’s a treat to immerse yourself in luxurious surroundings with carpets that sink underfoot and the air full of the aromas that waft from the treatment rooms. Make up for lost time at the Sligo Park Hotel

SEA, SCENERY AND STROLLS IN SLIGO Known for its literary heritage and scenic beauty, Sligo is a wonderful spot to spend a few days. Offering a fantastic range of eateries, from cosy cafes to fine dining, you’ll be spoilt for choice - especially if you’re a fan of seafood! Rosses Point Beach, located in a seafaring village 8km from the town, boasts three sandy beaches, ideal for strolls. The area inspired much of Jack B Yeats’ art which you can see on exhibition from time to time at The Model Arts Centre. From Rosses Point Pier, you can take a boat to Coney Island, book a trip with Ewing Sea Angling Boat charters and spend the day fishing, or simply soak up the scenic views of Benbulben and Knocknarea from the beach itself. Attractions nearby include Elsinore House and County Sligo Golf Club. A leisurely 15-minute drive to the east of Sligo is the scenic Lough Gill, an angler’s paradise stocked with salmon, trout, and pike. The lake is surrounded by woods, which are dotted with nature trails and viewing points. The lush hills of Slieve Killery and Slieve Daean rise above the south shore. The area is fantastic for bird-watchers too. If you’re looking for something a bit different why not check out the Atlantic Way Alpaca Farm for its kid pygmy goats, cows,

Lough Gill and Dooney Forest, Sligo in autumn, with Knocknarea mountain on the horizon, © Sligo Tourism sheep, goats, ponies, alpacas, pigs and a donkey. For an autumn walk Glencar Waterfall is also known as ‘The Devil’s Chimney’ and is situated near Glencar Lake, between Manorhamilton in County Leitrim and Sligo town. It is particularly stunning after rain. A short, picturesque wooded walk offers varied viewing platforms to enjoy the waterfall. There are more waterfalls visible from the road, although none is quite as romantic as this one which is mentioned by WB Yeats in his poem ‘The Stolen Child’. Another wellknown landmark overlooking Carrowmore megalithic cemetery on the summit of Knocknarea Mountain is the huge flat-topped cairn called ‘Miosgan Meadhba’ (Maeve’s Cairn), 55m in diameter and 10m high. The name of the monument along with folklore suggests it was built for the mythical warrior Maeve, the Iron Age Queen of Connaught. Maeve’s Cairn can be seen for miles as it sits on top of Knocknarea mountain. It’s easy to find but the climb to the summit is not for the faint hearted.

Those looking for another staycation this autumn along the Wild Atlantic Way can find a number of fantastic deals at the Sligo Park Hotel. Q. What Covid-19 restrictions remain? A. In both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland (RoI) most venues have reopened. In the Republic, the government is set to announce the latest measures on August 31. At the time of going to press, anyone over 18 years must produce proof of vaccination to be allowed to dine indoors in the Republic. Masks remain mandatory in shops, while moving around in restaurants etc, at entertainment venues and on public transport. In Northern Ireland, the limit on numbers allowed to dine has been lifted and masks are still required when moving around. Live music is now permitted indoors as well as outdoors. Q. Is everything back to normal? A. While the restrictions have now been relaxed on both sides of the border, it’s important to follow the current Covid-19 guidelines. Throughout the island, social distancing remains in place and everyone is asked to wear face coverings on public transport and in shops, and avoid close contact including shaking hands and hugs. Q. Where can I see updates? A. To stay updated on the latest guidelines and government recommendations in the Repubic, visit Gov.ie. For up to date information in Northern Ireland, visit www.nidirect.gov.uk. Q. How can I tell if a hotel, restaurant or venue is taking safety seriously?

A. In Northern Ireland, look out for the ‘Good to Go’ logo and in RoI, it’s the COVID-19 Safety Charter logo. Both offer assurance that the premises is adhering to strict hygiene measures and has agreed to be subject to spot checks. Q. How can I check if a business is safe before going there? A. A Google search of ‘Failte Ireland covid compliant businesses’ will take you to a directory of businesses which have met or exceeded the standards required for the COVID-19 Safety Charter symbol. In Northern Ireland, a similar directory is available at discovernorthernireland.com/ know-before-you-go/good-to-go Q. Are there any rules about travelling? A. Drivers from Northern Ireland must now carry a Green Card when driving in the Republic or any EU country, to prove they have valid insurance cover for their vehicle. You can get one from your insurance provider. Q. What if I need medical treatment? A. For UK residents, once your current EHIC card expires, you can apply for a new UK issued GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card). This entitles UK residents travelling in Ireland to access medically necessary state health services. You may still need to pay a fee for some services, like an Irish resident. You will not need to pay for hospital care including A&E or inpatient treatment, although you will pay in full for private healthcare.
