THE GOD THAT COMES

by Tomson Highway directed by Peter Hinton

by Duncan Sheik & Steven Sater directed by Michael Shamata

by David Ives directed by Michael Shamata

by Daniel MacIvor directed by Glynis Leyshon

HOW TO DISAPPEAR COMPLETELY

HHHH (out of 4)... Spend the night with Venus in Fur ...it’s one hookup you won’t regret... sexy, sophisticated and side-splittingly funny... complex, provocative and pretty close to perfect.

HHHH (out of 4)... Comedy at its purest. Toronto Star

VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE

Toronto Star

MacIvor’s charm as a writer is in the ascendant here... may be the playwright’s best play. National Post

A hoot. It’s a lump in the throat and a cheeky boot in the butt. Saskatchewan Indian

One of the most touching, exuberant, cleverly crafted and utterly entrancing plays. Toronto Star

Dora Award for Outstanding New Play Floyd S. Chalmers Canadian Play Award A rich, magical journey of redemption by celebrated First Nations writer, Tomson Highway. Seven women – all related – leave their reservation on a road trip to Toronto and the “Biggest Bingo in the World”, each hoping to win the jackpot and change their lives forever. Audience Advice – contains some strong language and mature subject matter.

A fresh breeze of true inspiration... New York Times Attitude, youthful exuberance and a fresh, gutsy sound. A serious show that raises provocative issues. New York Daily News

Winner of the 2007 Tony Award for Best Musical, Spring Awakening is a rock musical based on the controversial 19th Century German play by Frank Wedekind. This musical is a daring mix of rebellion, poignancy and passion as a group of teens wrestle with their emerging sexuality and their place in the world. In collaboration with Company C at the Canadian College of Performing Arts, Victoria. Audience Advice – contains mature subject matter.

B4Play – Saturday, September 13 at 11am

Contemporary, engaging, intelligent and entertaining. These are the words I use to describe the perfect Belfry play, and all of the many productions and presentations in our new season fit that description to a “t”. Join us again as we look at humanity from as many perpectives as possible, sharing laughter and discoveries and moments that touch our hearts. Michael Shamata, Artistic Director

Wildly intelligent and sometimes frightening... The New Yorker

Before Fifty Shades of Grey, there was Leopold von Sacher-Masoch’s classic erotic novel, Venus in Furs. In this Tony Award nominated adaptation, the tables are turned as a young actress tangles with a director increasingly intrigued by her. Funny and stimulating, this play weaves sex and power into an exhilarating game of cat and mouse. Audience Advice – contains strong language and suggestive subject matter.

Perhaps MacIvor’s most heartwarming and crowd-pleasing comedy. Globe & Mail

A touching new comedy by Daniel MacIvor. A freak accident at Toronto’s Gay Pride Parade leaves Bunny Best’s sons to mourn her, to celebrate her and to ponder the big questions like “who did she like best?” and “who gets the dog?”

These two plays, presented in one evening, explore our relationships with the first woman in our lives.

by Itai Erdal, James Long, Anita Rochon & Emilia Symington Fedy directed by James Long starring Itai Erdal He’s not an actor, but being a typically loquacious Israeli lends Erdal the skills of a strong storyteller... the result is warm, witty and, naturally, beautifully lit. Vancouver Sun

There is humour, and life. What could have been a dark show is driven in fact by light. Globe & Mail A work of art. The Georgia Straight

Simply, an amazing new play from Vancouver’s Itai Erdal. Blending his love for lighting design and the true story of his mother in her final days, Itai and his collaborators have created one of the most loving and compelling stories you will ever see. A Chop Theatre Production, Vancouver Audience Advice – contains strong language. B4Play – Saturday, January 24 at 11am

A tour de force performance that mesmerizes... deft wit and razor sharp humour...

by Christopher Durang directed by Michael Shamata

An awesome experience... rare and unique...

The funniest show in town, yet one with an emotional kick that lifted it to a more rarefied plane... even better on second viewing.

The Chronicle Herald, Halifax

Bloomberg News

2b theatre company production, Halifax

The theatre erupts in booming gusts of laughter that practically shake the seats.

Calgary Sun

FISH EYES, BOYS WITH CARS & LET ME BORROW THAT TOP created and performed by Anita Majumdar She can act, she can write. She is even a mean Kathak dancer! And she accomplishes all this with ease, elegance and intelligence. Deepa Mehta (director of the Oscar-nominated film Water)

Three tender and funny plays from the immensely talented award-winning writer, dancer and actor Anita Majumdar.

New York Times

Brainy and witty and clever and cute... Variety Winner of the 2013 Tony Award for Best Play, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike is Durang’s cheeky homage to all things Chekhov. The bucolic bliss of siblings Vanya and Sonia is thrown into disarray when sisterturned-movie actress Masha returns home with her new, rather dimwitted, lover in tow, sparking a fiery bout of rivalry, lust and opportunity. Afterplay Weeks Following selected performances of each of our Mainstage productions, we’ll host Afterplay – a facilitated discussion where patrons can share their thoughts with fellow audience members. It’s a chance to “debrief” after the show and hear how other audience members experienced the play. Talkback On the second Thursday performance of each show, after the curtain call, some of the actors return to the stage to answer your questions and provide insight into the play you have just experienced. These Q & A sessions last approximately 20 minutes. Reading Copies Reading copies of plays from Belfry seasons past and present are available in our Script Library. If you would like to get to know a play before or after you see it, please feel free to contact us through the Box Office. Building Tours Whether you are interested in exploring the history of our beautiful arts centre, or catching a glimpse of some backstage magic, building tours are offered free of charge. Tours can be arranged through our Artistic Associate and are dependent on the theatre’s production schedule. Synopses A synopsis for each show is available at www.belfry.bc.ca.
