FEBRUARY 4 — MARCH 2, 2025
BEHIND THE MOON
FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Welcome to the Belfry’s first production of 2025—! And I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a joyous and healthy year ahead.
This play is so full of humanity—! Anosh Irani’s writing is brimming with longing, heart, and enormous empathy for the outsiders and those scarred by life’s tragedies.
To bring material this sensitive to the stage requires artists of the highest quality. We are blessed with the three remarkable men in the cast: Rizwan Manji, Anand Rajaram, and Ben Yoganathan. They are guided by the sensitive direction of Leora Morris, on an evocative set designed by Anahita Dehbonehie, who also designed their costumes. They are beautifully lit by Logan Raju Cracknell, and surrounded and supported by the sound and the music created for this production by Chris Ross-Ewart.
Every one of these artists—from Anosh Irani, to the actors, the creative team, and even the stage management team—is making their Belfry Theatre debut. It is a pleasure having such talent—and such exceptional human beings—in the building. And as you will see—it is a beautifully written, carefully wrought production—!
This is what the Belfry Theatre is all about: engaging stories that open a window onto an aspect of our world with which we are unfamiliar. Honest portraits of good people facing life’s challenges, written with empathy and heart—this is Anosh’s gift to all of us.
with gratitude and respect—
FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Welcome to the Belfry and welcome to Anosh Irani’s captivating world. Behind the Moon has a particular resonance for me as a South Asian immigrant, in the nostalgia for these particular restaurants, and a complicated empathy for all the characters. Leora and Anosh’s brilliance is such that we are all entranced and completely invested in the lives of the characters. The Belfry is delighted and grateful to bring together these artists supported by our extremely talented and hardworking team. They all bring a delicacy and deep sensitivity to the work. And all of you, dear audiences, thank you for coming along for the artistic ride, willing to take risks, and explore these fascinating worlds we animate on our stage.

My plays seem to have strange trajectories in terms of how they evolve. My previous play, Buffoon, began way back in 2005 as a commission. I wanted to write a circus play; it was called Manja’s Circus back then. It had a cast of seven. The play turned out fine, and I was even offered a production by a theatre company, but something told me to wait. It was the clown in the play. He walked out of the play and demanded his own show. That’s when I realized: “Oh, this is a one person show.” With Behind the Moon, one of the characters from an earlier play of mine, The Men in White, kept haunting me. Ayub is a version of that character. I was extremely interested in his inner life. Why did he come to Canada? Who did he leave behind? What does he dream of? So, I wrote a short story about him called “Behind the Moon,” which was published in the Los Angeles Review of Books. The deeper I dug, the more he revealed himself. Until, eventually, he showed up on stage, cleaning the glass counter of the restaurant that he works in. If characters refuse to leave me, I just follow them. And listen.
Jalal’s quote in English is from an epigraph to a short story by Naiyer Masud. The original Farsi quote belongs to the 10th century Persian poet Kisa’i Marvazi. English translation by Muhammad Umar Memon. Arabic translation by Ahmed Moneka and Israa Moneka.
The Belfry Theatre is a member of the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres and engages professional artists who are members of the Canadian Actors’ Equity Association under the terms of the jointly negotiated Canadian Theatre Agreement.
rizwan Manji Jalal
Rizwan Manji is excited to be back on stage after almost 20 years. What has he been doing on his long break?! Well… In between acting on multiple American Network shows that were cancelled after only one season (Outsourced, Perfect Harmony, Better off Ted, Privileged) and losing the Best Guest Actor Award at the 2021 Canadian Screen Awards for his portrayal of Ray Butani on Schitt’s Creek, Rizwan has been parenting three wonderful children who show their love and affection to him at critical points during their day when they are not on their iPhone. Next up, please look out for Manji in something he hopefully books soon and runs for multiple seasons. Much love to Tas, Ayana, Aariq and Ayla for letting me spend two months in Victoria. Hopefully you realized I am away. Social media: @rizwanmanji
