ALASKA

FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Welcome to the start of a new season at the Belfry—! For an Artistic Director, there are no more exciting words to write than those. The start of a season is both a culmination and a beginning. We’ve completed all the planning: chosen the plays, invited the directors, cast the actors, engaged the designers. And now here we are: embarking on the reason we do what we do: sharing stories with you, our audience. It isn’t magic until you join the equation. We toil in artifice; you transform it into humanity.

I am thrilled that all of us in this room get to experience Sébastien Harrisson’s lovefilled play, in this, the first production of Leanna Brodie’s masterful translation. I love the delicacy of Harrisson’s writing—so similar to a watercolour. And I marvel at how well he succeeds in putting the human heart onstage.

Although the Belfry has a long history of producing francophone plays, our last one was a shocking 13 years ago—Michel Nadeau’s And Slowly Beauty…, in a translation by Maureen Labonté.

Welcome to another Québécois voice and another way of looking at the world; welcome to another Belfry world premiere; and welcome to the start of a new season—! With respect—

FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Welcome!

I am always delighted by the enthusiasm of the Belfry community, and deeply grateful for the faith you put in our work. The support you provide— whether as an audience member, a donor, a volunteer, or any combination thereof—is the fuel that keeps the Belfry running.

This new season is a celebration of 48 years of incredible audiences from every corner of our beautiful city—and beyond: Victoria communities supporting great theatre! The strengths and the successes of the Belfry Theatre are a tribute to you and your generous involvement.

I so appreciate you joining us for this particular play—and this unique journey into the tender world created by Sébastien Harrisson in Leanna Brodie’s excellent translation. We’ve brought together an amazing team of artists, who in turn have brought their creative minds and souls to the realization of this production. I congratulate them all.

And once again, I thank you all!

Sébastien Harrisson’s D’Alaska was first produced in French in 2007 by Montréal’s Théâtre Bluff, workshopped at CEAD, and directed by Frédéric Dubois.

D’Alaska was published along with Harrisson’s play Floes by Dramaturges Éditeurs of Montréal under the title Suite nordique (nominated for the Governor-General’s Literary Award).

The English translation From Alaska, by Leanna Brodie, was commissioned by Theatre Direct with the financial support of the Theatre International program of the Canada Council for the Arts. As the inaugural project of the Québec Translation Exchange between the Banff Centre for the Arts and CEAD, it was developed at the Banff Playwrights’ Colony with translation dramaturgy by Maureen Labonté. It subsequently had public readings at Theatre Direct (directed by Lynda Hill) and at Canadian Stage’s Festival of New Ideas and Creation (directed by Brendan Healy). The translator would like to thank all the actors in those initial readings.

A greatly revised and expanded version by the author was re-translated for a planned Ruby Slippers Theatre production at the Gateway Theatre, which was to have been directed by Diane Brown in April of 2020.

From Alaska is produced by arrangement with Kensington Literary Representation, 34 St. Andrew Street, Toronto, ON, M5T 1K6, kensingtonlit@rogers.com Leanna Brodie is a member of Playwrights Guild of Canada.

A graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada, he has gone on to work with some of the greatest names in Quebec theatre, including André Brassard, Normand Chaurette, Jean-Pierre Ronfard, and Suzanne Lebeau. Recent projects include Warda, which premiered at the Rideau de Bruxelles theatre in 2018, and Becoming Chelsea, which premiered at Montreal’s Théâtre Prospero in 2020. An earlier version of From Alaska, which premiered in 2008, has toured Quebec with more than 80 performances, and was produced in France in 2013, directed by Vincent Goethals.
