70 Years of Belgium’s Flying Forces,
a special
double book project is in preparation
To celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Belgian Air Force, a unique book project is being prepared. It will be presented at the end of June during the BAF DAYS 16 at Florennes Air Base. We have chosen a unique concept for two volumes: the first volume will give an overview of the past 70 years; the other will give an overview of our current capabilities and will take a look at the future. Everything is beautifully illustrated with unique photographic material.

The number of types of aircraft piloted by the Belgian Air Force is pretty impressive. In those days, unlike the current aircraft, some machines have only been operational for a short while. Also these less known planes are highlighted in this first volume.

Since its creation 70 years ago, the Belgian Air Force has undergone an enormous evolution. The range of aircraft ying in Belgian colours is wide and varied. In the early days, the armed forces have purchased specific aircraft for specific tasks. In the historical volume, all these aircraft are reviewed: from the famous Spitfire or the Mosquito, the night fighter shown above, over the RF-84F Thunderash, F-104 Starfighter to the Mirage 5. Author Daniel Brackx met several former pilots of these aircraft.

About the author For the composition of these two volumes, we have attracted an author who has already earned his stripes. In the past, aviation historian and photographer Daniel Brackx published with great care, ‘Belgium through Blue Eyes’ and dozens of other aviation publications. He is also the man behind the scenes of the famous website belgianwings.be

The second volume will count over 170 pages. It provides an overview of the tasks that are assigned to the Belgian Air Force today. Of course, the helicopters and aircraft of the Armed Forces will play a major role in this part. Also, the personnel, responsible for turning the Belgian Air Force into a well-oiled machine, will not be forgotten. For this publication, the author and several photographers of the Belgian Armed Forces have produced unique footage, often made during operational missions. Finally, in this second volume, we also take a sneak peek at the aircraft which will be taken into service within the next few years.
