RAY ATKINS b.1937

Gorse and Red Washing / 1993

Oil on board / 110 x 122 cm

Signed, titled and dated on reverse

Provenance: Art Space Gallery

A monograph on the artist is currently being prepared by Peter Davies.

2

Oil on board / 28 x 43 cm

Signed, titled and dated on reverse

This painting is signed, titled and dated by Basil Beattie on the reverse and is consistent with the artist’s work of the period. Interestingly, however, the painting is also signed with the initials G.A. on the bottom edge of the image, consistent with the initialling style of Gillian Ayers seen in other works. The two artists, born in the 1930s and both significantly influenced by Abstract Expressionism, exhibited together more than once in the 1980s, most notably in the Hayward Annual of 1980. Although almost certainly solely the work of Beattie, it is curious that the painting should also appear to bear Ayres initials.
