MESSAGE FROM DEAN TROYER

COLLEGE HIGHLIGHTS

I am delighted to introduce myself as the new dean for the Belk College of Business. As we celebrate our college’s 50th anniversary throughout the 2020-21 academic year, I look forward to virtually meeting with many of you.

“Jennifer is a forward-thinking leader who is dedicated to student success and is closely linked to our business community,” said UNC Charlotte Provost Joan F. Lorden.

The global COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on all our lives. From our students and their commitment to keep learning, to our faculty who quickly shifted to move hundreds of courses to a virtual instruction model, I’ve been uplifted by the resilience of our campus community. On the front lines, our Business Niner alumni and supporters have been stepping up to solve problems, keep us safe, and keep businesses going in this challenging time. This type of dedication is what defines us as 49ers and makes me proud to serve as your new dean. We’re doing great work at the Belk College and are excited to share with you some recent examples.

DR. JENNIFER TROYER APPOINTED BELK COLLEGE DEAN

Sincerely,

Dr. Jennifer Troyer – who has served at UNC Charlotte for 20 years – has been appointed dean of UNC Charlotte’s Belk College of Business.

Jennifer Troyer, Ph.D. Dean, Belk College of Business

SENIOR LEADERSHIP Jennifer Troyer, Ph.D. Dean Jennifer Ames-Stuart, Ph.D. Associate Dean, Graduate and Executive Programs

Troyer, interim dean of the Belk College since October, became the seventh dean in the College’s 50-year history and the first female dean in July 2020.

Troyer is the chief academic and administrative officer of the College and is responsible for leading strategy and vision, championing its fundraising efforts, and managing its budget and more than 160 full-time faculty and staff. Previously, she served as interim dean of the College of Health and Human Services and held several administrative roles within the Belk College, including senior associate dean, associate dean for research and graduate programs, and chair of the Department of Economics. Her research has earned several awards and been funded by the National Institutes of Health. Troyer holds a master’s and doctorate in economics from Florida State University. She also holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Memphis, where she was a first-generation college student. Troyer replaces Steven Ott, who stepped down in October 2019 after serving more than eight years as dean.

The Belk College ranked no. 1 among business schools in the Carolinas on Poets & Quants’ “B-Schools with the Most U.S. Minorities” list. The list ranks universities based on the percentage of underrepresented U.S. minorities among business majors who enrolled in fall 2019 (class of 2023). The Belk College was #22 overall.

A new Peer Guides Program, partially supported through a Chancellor’s Diversity Challenge Fund grant, debuted in fall 2019. Peer Guides add a student voice and student leadership to assist staff with engaging other students in professional development activities, particularly students from underrepresented groups. Peer Guides also represented the College at recruitment events and supported prospective-student calling campaigns, reaching 650 prospective students.

Betsabe Rojas, a business honors and economics major and Martin Scholar, became the first UNC Charlotte student selected to participate in the Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Summer Enrichment Program, funded by the U.S. Department of State. Joyce Chung, an accounting major, received the BAP 2020 Medal of Inspiration award.

HIGHLIGHT: INCREASING FLEXIBILITY FOR ENROLLMENT As the COVID-19 pandemic closed standardized test centers across the country, the Belk College was among the first business schools to waive the GMAT/GRE testing requirements for summer and fall 2020 for all master’s graduate programs. The waiver, which will continue through spring 2021, has allowed the Belk College to eliminate barriers, alleviate anxiety and provide flexibility for those applying to the college’s master’s programs. To further assist prospective students, all Belk College master’s programs also quickly pivoted to offer recruiting activities virtually, including online information sessions and personal, phone-based advisory appointments.

This first DBA graduating class represents a number of industries, including higher education, real estate, finance and manufacturing. The program is the first and only AACSB-accredited DBA program in the Carolinas.

“My aim is to expand opportunities for higher-education so that others can experience what I experienced at UNC Charlotte: the opportunity to succeed. That’s why I give. The University changed my life, and it can change theirs also.” HARPER HICKS ‘16 CHAIR OF THE ALUMNI COUNCIL DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE

Through immersive education, research and outreach programs, the Belk College inspires hard work, critical thinking, and encourages creative problem solving. Students and alumni are empowered on their journey to become market-ready leaders who will shape the business here in Charlotte and across the globe. For these students, every day provides an opportunity to not only excel in the classroom, but to create bonds that continually strengthen the Niner Nation family, opportunities made possible by the generosity of our alumni, corporate partners, and friends of the Belk College of Business.

MAKE AN IMPACT Giving to the Belk College can make a difference not only for current students, but also for future generations of innovative business leaders, entrepreneurs and thought leaders. To find an opportunity that is right for you, please contact Meagan Conley, Director of Development, at meagan.conley@uncc.edu or 704-687-0277.
