WOMEN IN BUSINESS SIGNATURE EVENT
ALUMNI ALUMNA HONORED AS AACSB INFLUENTIAL LEADER Belk College alumna DeAndrea Salvador (’13 Economics) is one of 33 business school graduates honored by AACSB International (AACSB)—the world’s largest business education alliance—as the 2019 Class of Influential Leaders. Among the 33 honorees, Salvador is the only recognized alumna honoree from the UNC System in 2019. The annual challenge recognizes notable alumni from AACSB-accredited schools whose inspiring work serves as a model for the next generation of business leaders. Salvador is founder and CEO of Renewable Energy Transition Initiative (RETI) and JouleScout and a TED 2018 Fellow. CEO SPEAKER SERIES FEATURES ALUMNI ENTREPRENEUR LEADERS
ALUMNI ENTREPRENEURS GIVE BACK THEIR TIME AND INSIGHTS Boxing and business are dual passions that have fueled alumnus Calvin Brock’s (’99 Finance) life. The boxer and business graduate knows his training and education have paid off. From the Olympic team, to world championships, to his own startup Jack and Landlords, Brock has big goals. Brock, along with other alumni entrepreneurs from the Charlotte community, spoke to students and the community as part of the new Entrepreneurial Decisions Speaker Series. Alumni entrepreneur speakers included: Bryan Delaney ’03 (Skookum), Chris Elmore ’93 (AvidXchange), Michelle Menard ’97 (Choice Translating) and 49ers Christopher Moxley ’03, Jerri Shephard ’14 and Scott Wooten (704 Shop). Alumni entrepreneurs and leaders gave back in a meaningful way - sharing their insights as part of the CEO Speaker Series and Entrepreneurial Decisions Speaker Series. Manuel L. Zapata, P.E. (’72 MBA) of Zapata, Inc. and Scott Price (’87 Business Administration) of UPS were the featured speakers this year.
ALUMNI RECEIVE UNIVERSITY AWARDS On April 5, two Belk College alumni were honored at the University Alumni Awards Celebration. The Honorable William “Bill” Brawley (’78 Accounting) received a Distinguished Alumni Award, honoring alumni who have made significant contributions to UNC Charlotte and the Alumni Association. Robert Niblock (’84 Accounting) received the Bonnie E. Cone Lifetime Achievement Award, presented to alumni for extraordinary leadership and accomplishments and the highest honor that the Alumni Association bestows.

M.S. IN MANAGEMENT PROGRAM OPENS CAREER POSSIBILITIES FOR FIRST COHORT Hannah Milillo and Justin Butler are both in the M.S. in Management program and will graduate with the first class of 27 students in May. Milillo is passionate about art and culture, and her goal is to pursue a career in the arts. As U.S. Army National Guard Squad Leader, Butler acquired many valuable skills in the military that are helping him excel as a graduate student and will transfer well to the corporate setting. UNC Charlotte’s Master of Science in Mathematical Finance program rose in the national rankings from #16 in 2018 to #14 in 2019, as determined by the TFE Times. UNC Charlotte’s M.S. in Mathematical Finance is a joint program of the Departments of Finance and Economics in the Belk College of Business and the Department of Mathematics in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences.
PROFESSOR RECEIVES HIGH HONOR, BOOK FEATURED NATIONALLY UNC Charlotte Chancellor’s Professor Steven Rogelberg received the 2019 First Citizens Bank Scholars Medal, UNC Charlotte’s most prestigious faculty award in recognition of excellence in research. He was honored formally at an awards ceremony on April 2. Rogelberg’s book “The Surprising Science of Meetings” has been featured nationally since its release on Jan. 2. The Washington Post listed it No. 1 for leadership books to watch for in 2019 and Business Insider called it one of the top business books everyone will be reading in 2019, in addition to coverage by CBS This Morning, WFAE Charlotte Talks, Harvard Business Review, Huffington Post, and Inc.

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS DIRECTOR RECOGNIZED FOR LEADERSHIP OF HONORS PROGRAMS On April 4, hundreds gathered to celebrate and recognize honors students and alumni of the Belk College of Business – and also their longtime leader, Professor Ted Amato. Amato has served as the Business Honors Program director since 2008 and led the Belk Scholars Program since its inception in 2014. The reception in the Friday Building recognized the contributions of Amato to both honors programs. We thank and honor Dr. Amato for his many contributions, mentorship and leadership. WIB SIGNATURE EVENT PROVIDES PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, SCHOLARSHIPS The Belk College Women in Business Initiative offered a half-day professional development conference on Feb. 1 to Belk College students. During this signature event, students connected with alumni and business professionals over a business luncheon, learned new insights from keynote speaker and alumna Kelly McPhilliamy (’89 Finance), participated in breakout sessions and ended the conference with a Connections Reception. CHILDRESS KLEIN CENTER FOR REAL ESTATE CHILDRESS KLEIN CENTER FOR REAL ESTATE PRESENTS ANALYSIS OF THE “STATE OF HOUSING IN CHARLOTTE” The Childress Klein Center for Real Estate at UNC Charlotte presented its first Summit on the State of Housing in Charlotte to provide policymakers, real estate professionals and the general public a comprehensive, data-driven analysis of the housing markets in the Charlotte region. Richard Buttimer, director of the Childress Klein Center for Real Estate, presented the analysis, which included key findings looking at the owneroccupied housing market, the rental market and low-income housing analyzed from data sources over a 10-year period from 2007 to 2017. The report was released during the half-day Summit at UNC Charlotte Center City hosted by the Childress Klein Center for Real Estate and sponsored by major organizations. 10 organizations and firms have pledged a total of more than $200,000 over five years to support the report and summit, including Center City Partners, Charlotte Housing Authority, Charlotte Regional Realtor® Association, Crosland Southeast, Evergreen Strategies, Foundation for the Carolinas, Moore & Van Allen, National Association of Realtors®, Piedmont Public Policy Institute and True Homes Inc. EXECUTIVE EDUCATION CUSTOM EXECUTIVE EDUCATION PROGRAM RECEIVES NATIONAL AWARD The Advanced Management Program for Legal Executives, a custom executive education program designed by the Association of Corporate Counsel Charlotte Chapter and UNC Charlotte Executive Education, has won an Outstanding Achievement Award for “Best Partnership Program” from the Association of Corporate Counsel. The Advanced Management Program, based on MBA coursework and taught by UNC Charlotte Belk College of Business faculty, is delivered over an academic year
at UNC Charlotte Center City. The program was also recently recognized by the Charlotte Business Journal at the Corporate Counsel Awards with another “Best Partnership Program” honor. EXED.UNCC.EDU
