ACCOUNTING Accounting is the information backbone of any business and is critical for the successful management of any organization. Accounting data is used by managers to measure financial performance, control operations and provide financial reports to the investment community. All functional areas in a business (such as marketing, production, human resources, finance and information technology) use accounting information in their daily operations. You might enjoy accounting if you like logic and order; you take a step-by-step approach to problem solving; you analyze your options before making decisions; you did well in algebra or statistics; you’re detail-oriented; you enjoy teamwork.

Economics is the study of choices. Unlike many other disciplines, studying to approach the question, and reasonable and rational methods for obtaining the answer. If you like to question the status quo, economics may be for you. You might enjoy economics if you have excellent math skills; you can work “in the gray;” you did well in calculus or statistics; you like using logic and reasoning; you enjoy finding connections among ideas; you can see the big picture; you rely on research and data to make decisions; you’re always asking “what if.”

I chose to major in Economics because of all of the career options available to me. My professors really care about my academic success and have helped me to connect to the business community here in Charlotte.

FINANCE As the saying goes, “money makes the world go round.” The Finance major can prepare you for a career in banking, of course, but can also lead to careers in industries as varied as healthcare, energy and retail. As a Finance major, you will learn how businesses develop financial plans, how they acquire and allocate their resources, and how the legal environment affects decision-making. Finance is an area that allows rapid progression in a wide range of careers. In fact, many CEOs have a finance background. You might enjoy finance if you did well in algebra and statistics; you’re a whiz at Excel; you like to set long-term goals; you’re analytical by nature; people call you a problem solver; you’re able to set and keep a budget; you’re detail oriented; you can work well under pressure; you like negotiating and working with people.

INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS Successful businesses and managers need to adapt quickly in today’s dynamic global business environment. They may be affected by market opportunities, increasing foreign competition, demand for raw materials, labor costs and government regulations. The International Business major will not only teach you how to compete in the global marketplace, it will prepare you for a career in our increasingly interdependent world. You may enjoy international business if you love languages; you’re interested in different cultures; you have cultural sensitivity; you work well with others; you’re a skilled negotiator; you like working in or leading teams; you’re able to communicate difficult ideas to others.

I took two international business courses in Greece during the summer. My experience abroad was incredible! The courses gave me unique exposure to European business practices, and I gained a deeper understanding of global cultures.

Most businesses use Management Information Systems (MIS) to make forecasts, manage day-to-day operations, schedule personnel and equipment, monitor quality, manage inventory, work with suppliers and coordinate projects. SPECIAL ACADEMIC programs UNC Charlotte and Bank of America have partnered to offer this unique 17-month “learn-work-hire� program. The ATP provides real-world experiences in the financial services industry to high achieving undergraduate students studying business and technology. Students begin the program in the spring semester of their junior year, and continue with a full-time paid summer internship. During their senior year, students work part-time for Bank of America while completing their studies. Most ATP participants have been offered a full-time position upon graduation. Business Honors Program (BHP) The BHP is a challenging four-year plan of study for motivated students with excellent academic performance. BHP students participate in stimulating coursework, leadership activities, team-building exercises and community service projects designed to enhance marketability after graduation. Business Learning Community (BLC) The BLC is a one-year program fostering academic success among a diverse group of students who may feel challenged by the transition from high school to college. BLC students live together on campus, enroll in common courses, and participate in business-related extracurricular and career-development activities. Entrepreneurship Certificate The Belk College offers a Certificate in Business Entrepreneurship for any undergraduate student from any major who is interested in learning the principles of entrepreneurship. Students will integrate business concepts, tools and techniques with their primary field of study, leading to a wide variety of career options post-graduation. Student Managed Investment Fund (SMIF) An innovative experiential learning program, the SMIF provides students with a real-time application of their studies in finance. I would encourage all Belk College students to take advantage of as many leadership opportunities as they can. I landed an internship at Google because of my leadership experiences. That internship led to a job offer after graduation, and I know my Belk College degree has prepared me for a successful career.

The Belk College’s Student Center for Professional Development (SCPD) can help you develop your “personal brand” to showcase your unique talents for future employers. You can attend workshops on topics like professional business attire, networking, or email etiquette to brush up on your business expertise. You can get help finding an internship to explore potential careers and expand your resume. Or, if you don’t really know what career you want to pursue, our Professional Success Coaches can provide individualized career coaching designed to reveal your interests and hidden strengths. From freshman orientation to graduation day, the SCPD can be a great resource for your future success.

academic advising Even though UNC Charlotte is a large university, you don’t have to feel lost in the crowd. Academic advisors do more than just help you register for classes. They can help you choose a major based on your interests, abilities and career goals. They can help you find support to ensure your academic success, including referrals to the Writing Resources Center, the University Center for Academic Excellence, tutoring or other university and college programs. They’re also a great first stop if you have questions or concerns and don’t know who to ask.

Financial Aid

Admissions for undergraduate students is managed at the university level, through the UNC Charlotte Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Visit admissions.uncc.edu for information on admission requirements, deadlines, tours and student life.

Financial aid at UNC Charlotte consists of grants, scholarships, loans and student employment. All financial aid for incoming freshmen and transfer students is managed at the university level. Information is available through Undergraduate Admissions or on the Office of Student Financial Aid website, finaid.uncc.edu.
