My hero is my mother because without her support, I would not be where I am as a musician today.
zona: What school do you go to? cory: This year, I will be a Senior at Arizona School for the Arts. Zona: What instruments do you play? cory: Mostly, I play the piano, organ, and I sing, but I can also play the viola, clarinet, guitar and harmonica. zona: What are some of your hobbies? cory: Some of my hobbies include video games, the computer, chess, reading, movies, Life Teen, and composing music. zona: Tell us a time you messed up at a recital and how you recovered. cory: There was one time when I was asked to play at a National Honors event at my brother’s school. The room did not have a full–sized piano; however, they had a keyboard containing only four octaves, which really upset me at first. However, I was able to adapt to that keyboard by changing some notes to the music so that it was entirely able to be played on that keyboard. zona: Why do you like the Scottsdale Studio of Music? cory: I like The Scottsdale Studio of Music because I continued my lessons from my teacher’s private home studio. Julie Ann was my teacher for four years before The Scottsdale Studio of Music opened. She has prepared me for many competitions and for music college applications. zona: How long have you participated there? cory: I have participated in The Scottsdale Studio of Music for only eight months; however, I have worked with Julie Ann for about five years. zona: Who is your hero and why? cory: My hero is my mother because without her support, I would not be where I am as a musician today. Also, her values of higher education make me want to work hard and graduate from college. zona: What are your future plans? cory: My plans for the future are to go to college and study to become a church music director.

A N O Z E H T LEADER IN •
Archway Classical Academy • FOURTH GRADE • DEAN OF STUDENTS
LAURENCE BUTLER
Veritas
ZONA: What grade do you teach? What do you love about teaching this grade? LAURENCE: I am a fourth grade teacher. Fourth grade is an important transitional period for many students, a time when they begin to mature mentally and emotionally, a time when they can really test and expand their intellectual capabilities. It’s a great pleasure to work with students when they have the desire and energy for discovery without the external pressures that come in the upper grades of school. ZONA: What were you doing before teaching? LAURENCE: Before ascending the pedagogical pedestal, I was finishing my degree in Dallas and working as a supervisor and butcher at a greasy barbeque restaurant. It was at this point in my life that I began saying, “Y’all.” At first I was ashamed of this adaptation, but sometimes it is convenient, and most other languages have a second person
plural pronoun anyway. ZONA: What made you want to become a teacher? LAURENCE: I wanted to do my part to ensure the preservation and appreciation of our Western culture, something too often taken for granted or just disregarded both in society and our schools today. Teaching has given me an opportunity to share the knowledge accumulated during my classical liberal arts education and help make more children privy to their great Western heritage, whether it’s in mathematics, the sciences, history, or literature. ZONA: What is your favorite thing about teaching? LAURENCE: There are many fulfilling aspects to teaching, but perhaps the most fun for me is imagining the joy and satisfaction my students will have ten years down the road, when they really start to realize what a great education they had at Archway Veritas. ZONA: When you were a kid in school, what was your favorite subject? Now that you are teaching, what is your favorite subject? LAURENCE: My favorite subject was probably P.E. when I was in school. It would have been history, but when I was in grade school history was an inhumane, ambiguous thing. I believe we called it social studies. Now as a teacher, my favorite subject is history, but teaching math, particularly geometry, is very enjoyable too. ZONA: What inspires you? LAURENCE: One of the things I like about fourth grade is that the students are capable of higher intellectual pursuits, and their academics do not yet have the pressures of entrance exams and SATs and all the stuff that comes later. It’s a more pure pursuit of knowledge in fourth grade. That being said, it’s still serious business, and I truly appreciate the trust that parents and students give me as their instructor. I have one school year to teach my students as much as I can, one year
to help them develop as intellectual and moral persons. Regardless of how that year goes, it can’t be undone, and thus I am motivated to make every opportunity a teachable moment. ZONA: What is your favorite movie? Fave breakfast item? Fave animal? LAURENCE: Overall, my favorite movie is probably Dr. Strangelove, but if I were to give you a top 10, all the other 9 would be Coen Brothers movies. I consider myself a patriotic American, and therefore my favorite breakfast food is pancakes, with bacon on the side. My favorite animal…is it a cop out to say Man? Well, to indulge the spirit of the question, that’s trickier. It would be very neat to swim 65mph like a sailfish, but being able to dive 200mph like a Peregrine Falcon would be pretty cool too. ZONA: What hobbies do you have? What is your favorite thing about those hobbies? LAURENCE: I enjoy playing soccer, which is a beautiful and graceful game (less so when I’m on the field), and birding. What is birding? I’m glad you asked that question. I like to explore the natural landscapes of Arizona, looking for and photographing the wonderful, beautiful feathered denizens of our desert, and anywhere else I can visit too. I keep a log of the species I see and post photos and narratives on my birding website. You might guffaw, “What a nerdy thing!” You are absolutely right. I’m loony about Loons and nuts about Nuthatches. ZONA: What is your favorite memory you will have looking back on this class and this school year? LAURENCE: It’s hard to say what my favorite memory will be (which is, in itself, a fun aspect of teaching), but I’ll certainly enjoy talking about History and Science with my students, as well as gnashing our collective teeth over perturbing math problems. This year I am also proctoring after-school detention. I always liked detention when I was a student; that may still hold true now as a teacher.

Tesseract’s Early Childhood
Program zona: What is your Early Childhood program all about? tesseract: The Early Childhood program at Tesseract is carefully designed to encourage children to learn through discovery and build a trusting relationship with educators in a school setting. Active learning offers children an opportunity to discover the world around them by exploring, listening and playing. Tesseract’s Early Childhood Program places children at the heart of learning. Our goal is to create a home away from home for a child to feel comfortable learning and interacting with friendly educators and friends. Our classrooms are carefully designed to provide a welcoming and comforting atmosphere where children can grow and learn at their own pace. Daily experiences incorporate playtime, which is enriched by music, physical education and Spanish. Braced by degreed educators who specialize in a child’s knowledge and understanding of the world, Tesseract guides the energy of young minds working eagerly at discovering the joy of learning in a safe, engaging and supportive atmosphere. zona: Tesseract will begin a Two’s Program this year. How will it be different than the Three’s Program other than age? tesseract: Our Two’s Program will have the same aspects as our program for three-year olds, but it is not required for the children to be potty trained. Of course, our student-to-educator ratio will be consistent with our Three’s Program, which is considerably low for all school standards, including independent schools. zona: What are some of the activities the two year olds will do on a daily basis? tesseract: Hands-on learning supported by educators, encouraging spoken language and social-emotional development, which includes self-help skills, making independent choices and learning how to play collaboratively. Our educators will work with our students to improve fine motor activities, which build muscles in hands, and with large motor play for full-body development of balance and coordination. Music, movement, dramatic play, science, discovery and story time are also signature programs of Tesseract’s Early Childhood program. zona: How does this program help them make the transition into preschool and beyond? tesseract: Children build confidence by entering school at an earlier age. Providing a safe The Cactus Room and loving environment for 2-4 year olds encourages young people to take more chances and interact better throughout school and life. Tesseract’s Early Childhood program provides an integrated thematic curriculum designed with a balance of social and academic experiences. zona: Is there a set curriculum or is it day care? tesseract: There is absolutely a set curriculum. We use the framework of Responsive Classroom.

The Coyote Room For young people, morning meetings create a sense of community. Children look forward to each day and are happy for a chance to practice and incorporate social, emotional and intellectual learning in a natural and comfortable environment. The importance of collaborative and interactive play helps children develop social skills, basic problem solving, critical thinking skills, self-confidence and creativity at an early age to prepare a solid foundation. The Responsive Classroom philosophy continues through all lower school age levels at Tesseract and comfortably allows children to develop and mature at a natural level while building confidence. zona: Share with us how your families benefit from the Early Childhood program? tesseract: The world is changing at an accelerated rate and parents are busier than ever. Collectively, they juggle a great deal every day. Tesseract’s Early Childhood program allows our community of parents the ability to be confident that their children will be at the center of learning. Educators provide an environment that takes care of basic needs and much more. Communication with parents about their children’s development and success is essential to our Early Childhood Program. Daily reports are sent out highlighting the progress of each class, as well as weekly reports accenting the cumulative development throughout the week. We receive tremendous feedback from our families because we see our role as educators and partners. Keeping with the Tesseract Mission to fosters each student’s intellect, love of learning and strength of character in an innovative and collaborative environment, we achieve great success working with our Early Childhood students as we prepare them to lead lives of purpose and become ethical and compassionate citizens with a global perspective. zona: What are the hours? tesseract: For families who need extended day care, 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM; in addition, parents can choose our half-day program or a few days a week. zona: Is there anything else you would like the community to know about this program? tesseract: Tesseract’s Early Childhood is an ideal program for families to begin the education process. Our educators genuinely enjoy working with their students each day watching them blossom. Each day, EC parents comment on the educational development and maturity they see in their children. Tesseract’s one-school philosophy also assists families. Knowing that they can go from age two through grade 12 is a plus for most families. Last year, Tesseract had its first upper school graduate who had started in our Early Childhood program. This young man has a love for learning, tremendous character and a great sense of drive – a feather in the cap for the entire Tesseract program. He will be attending Cal Poly in the fall and already has an idea for his career direction. We are seeing several students who have gone through EC, Lower and Middle School; it’s a wonderful achievement on so many levels.
More information on Tesseract’s Early Childhood Program can be found at TesseractSchool.org.

TOP ROBOTS After winning the Arizona Rookie All-Star Award, the Sabercats travelled to St. Louis to compete in the FIRST Championship. FIRST stands for “For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology.”
Saguaro High School travels to Saint Louis for robotics competition
ZONA Reporter Kaci Demarest recently talked with Seniors David Ingraham, Lewis Ruskin, and Junior Jessica Norman of Saguaro High School about their participation on the Saguaro Robotics team. The Saguaro robotics team has been around since November 2011 and recently traveled to Saint Louis for a competition. KACI: Why did you join robotics? DAVID: I have always been interested in engineering and I had read about the FIRST Robotics Competition. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do. When I found out that Saguaro was starting a team I couldn’t wait to join. JESSICA: I love math and science, and I wanted to learn more about engineering. KACI: When was your first competition? DAVID: Our very first competition was a scrimmage in February. We all had no idea what to expect in the competition setting and we had some technical problems with our robot. We learned a lot from it and we were able to make improvements to our team organization, pit set-up and robot design. LEWIS: March 2012. KACI: What do you most enjoy about being on the robotics team? JESSICA: I love building robots and meeting all of the people on the team. LEWIS: Working with my friends to create the coolest robots imaginable. KACI: What is the coolest robot you’ve ever built? DAVID: Definitely our competition robot from last season. This years game was based on basketball, and sadly I must admit that the robot can shoot hoops better than I. LEWIS: A robot that could play basketball. KACI: What is the most complicated thing about building a robot? DAVID: Our biggest challenge was bringing all of our ideas together into one solid design. Everyone had a ton of great ideas about how we should accomplish the various tasks the game required. It was hard to figure out which ideas would work best together. JESSICA: Time management and doubting ourselves. KACI: On average, how long The robotics drive team huddles up does it take you to build a robot? How many people and checks out the playing field at work on it? DAVID: In the FIRST Robotics Competition the regional competition. all teams are limited to a six week build season. This is a very short amount of time to build a competitive robot. Because of this we all had to put in late hours. We were at school until 7:00 during most of the build season. LEWIS: 6 weeks, 15 people. KACI: Why should people join the robotics team? JESSICA: It’s one of the best experiences of my life. I’ve met so many people in FIRST not even including the people on my time. And who wouldn’t want to build a robot? LEWIS: Robotics is a great and fun experience. KACI: If you could equip your robot with anything in the entire world, what would it be? DAVID: As a teenage boy, I’m going to have to say a flamethrower. JESSICA: Mecanum wheels. They are amazing. You can easily turn in any direction. Teams that used them this year tended to do very well. LEWIS: Propellers to turn it into a quad copter. KACI: Are you involved in any other activities in school? DAVID: Yes, actually quite a few. I am in 3 choirs, NHS, the science club, the tall club ,the math and science academy, and the cross country team. JESSICA: International club, orchestra, science club, gay straight alliance, art club, and link crew. LEWIS: Choir.

Fighting for AIR By Doug Kelton,Lutheran Editor of In the ZONASchool Magazine Valley High
Wheezing... shortness of breath... chest tightness... coughing, all symptoms Senior of asthma... have you ever witnessed a child go through an asthma attack? I did recently in the courtyard of the Tempe Market Place, right infront of the movie theater, and I felt so helpless. The little boy finally settled down and was okay, unfortunately though, it’s commonplace here in Phoenix. So, I wanted to learn more about this chronic (long-term) lung disease, and I figured, why not go straight to the experts, so I spoke to a representative at the American Lung Association to further educate myself on this all too familiar disease:
Life Leader
ZONA: What is asthma? AMERICAN LUNG ASSOCIATION: Asthma is known to be a complex condition with a spectrum of causes and contributing factors, with airway inflammation as its central attribute. Asthma is a chronic airway disease, characterized by recurrent symptoms such as coughing, wheezing and chest tightness. The severity of asthma varies from person to person. ZONA: What causes asthma? ALA: The truth is, there is not a conclusive answer to what causes asthma. It often runs in families, but this does not explain how one sibling can experience asthma, while another does not. There have been some environmental aspects related to people with asthma as well. This is especially true in adult onset asthma…which is often environmental. Overweight children have two times the risk of developing asthma, so obesity may be a factor. ZONA: What effects can asthma have on health? ZONA: How many Americans are directly affected by asthma? ALA: An estimated 17.7 million Americans suffer from asthma; more than 5.6 million are children under age 18. Asthma ranks eighth in prevalence among chronic conditions in our nation and is a leading cause of serious illness among children. Asthma brings more than 1.9 million Americans to emergency rooms each year. Asthma is the leading cause of school absenteeism attributed to chronic conditions. My goal is to be a responsible leader with good character. zona: Did you have fun running for office? Did you make any posters or speeches? If so, what did they say? Josiah:
I did make posters. My last name is Goats, so I had a slogan “Don’t Miss the Boat, Vote for the Goat”. I did have fun! My mom made “goat” cookies and ribbons. L

BETHANY CHRISTIAN SCHOOL IS ENROLLING NEW STUDENTS
T
he teachers have set up their classrooms and the campus has been tidied up to welcome in students for the 2012-2013 school year. Over the summer, 25 new families have decided to call Bethany Christian School in Tempe their school of choice. Bethany Christian School is an accredited, private K-8 Christian school and delivers academic excellence from a biblical world view in a caring, Christ-centered environment and is continuing to enroll new students for the 2012-2013 school year. Bethany Christian School is built on a foundation of meeting the needs of the whole child. The program is carefully designed to develop each student’s full potential in an environment where cooperation, hard work and respect for individual differences are valued. Students thrive in small classes taught by an experienced, passionate and caring teacher. The academic program integrates a deep, sequential course of study, with integration of art, music, Spanish, and physical education. State of the art technology supports the academic program at every grade level. The result is a coherent school experience that advances the school’s mission to lead each student toward a relationship with Jesus Christ and encourage each one to reach his or her unique potential in Christ – academically, spiritually, socially, physically, and creatively. When asked why she likes Bethany Christian School, 7th grader Kate Nichols said, “It’s a lot of fun! My friends and the teachers are nice.” Kate will join the rest of her schoolmates on August 2 when the school year officially begins.

Bryson & McKenzie, Seniors at Mesa Preparatory Academy, have done more in their short, eighteen years than most people have done in a lifetime.
They share their inspirational stories with ZONA:
zona: What grade are you in? What school do you attend? bryson: I am a senior at Mesa Preparatory Academy in southern Mesa. I have been attending Mesa Prep since I was in 7th grade, the first year it opened up. zona: You are involved in a lot of activities, tell us about them. bryson: Each Autumn, I have the wonderful opportunity to be a part of Mesa Prep’s Varsity football team. We work extremely hard and give it our all. This last season we were undefeated, and this year we plan on going far into the playoffs with our disciplined team. This will be my third year as one of four team captains. I also love being a student mentor in the Mentoring Program at Mesa Prep, in which I have the privilege of assisting new students in their transition to Mesa Prep. I lead a group of nine mentors during the summer in putting together a detailed presentation on lockers and organization to be taught at New Student Orientation (NSO) this last Friday (August 3rd). Along with NSO, I am assigned several mentees to mentor over the course of the semester. This year I have five enthusiastic, but nervous, 8th graders. I meet formally with them all, once a week, for the first quarter, and then every 3 weeks the second quarter. Outside of the formal meetings, I talk with them frequently and see how they’re doing and find out how to help them. In essence, I get to be their seasoned, kind, older brother at the school. Although I have already earned the highest rank in the Boy Scouting program (Eagle Scout), I still regularly participate in high adventure activities with my troop, such as canoe expeditions, repelling, backpacking, and weeklong encampments. I started with piano at an early age, and then taught myself the guitar, and then the ukulele. Now, I primarily play the ukulele, because I love its happy upbeat sound and it ability to be played everywhere and anywhere. My friends and I often hang out just to play and

sing songs. I have many incredibly musicallytalented friends. Music is definitely a huge part of my life. Unfortunately, my busy schedule does not permit for a part time job, so I decided to start teaching ukulele lessons a couple times per week. It allows me to work during times that fit with my schedule, without being too much of a time commitment. I teach several students each week and earn enough for a casual social life. This last spring, my good friend and I planned, and put on, our own prom. Because I live farther away from my Mesa Prep friends, I hang out frequently with many of the students at the local high school, including attending dances there. Both my good friend and I became tired and annoyed by the overly-expensive dances that played inappropriate music–at which many people danced “dirty”–so we decided to plan and throw our own prom. Tickets were cheap. The music was upbeat, clean, and fun. And the environment was uplifting and exciting. It became a huge production and ate up a good portion of my free time each and every night, but I enjoy helping people have memorable and amazing experiences. I found it necessary to implement almost every skill I had learned, but it was effort well spent. zona: What kind of awards have you received for your activities? bryson: This last school year, I received the Animus Magnus Award (Great Heart/Mind/Soul Award) and the Sapienta Award (A’s in all my classes). The Animus Magnus Award is the most special to me because it means that I gave everything I had to everything I did, and strove to better myself and everyone around me, being undeterred by whatever came my way. After my sophomore year of football, I received the Most Valuable Defensive Player Award (I play Middle Linebacker), and after my junior year, I was nominated by my coaches as the football nominee for the Monsoon Athlete of the Year Award. Monsoon Athletes of the Year must demonstrate outstanding leadership, courage, perseverance, heart, and athleticism. zona: What did you do this summer? bryson: The main highlight of my summer this year was my trip down to Peru. I had an amazing opportunity to go on a service trip to Peru to serve the wonderful people of the Lima/Ate area by
helping build a second story onto a preschool in one of the poorer parts of town. I went with a group called Humanitarian Experience For Youth (HEFY). Twenty other high school-aged youth and I made up the second of three groups to work on the school house. We were able to work with the kids in their classrooms and simply loved them. The work was hard, but worth every sore muscle and foreign sickness. Along with the service aspect, we were able to truly experience the Peruvian culture. We were not there to just look at cites. We got to work with the locals and get to know them as close friends. It was an incredible experience in every way possible, and I feel very blessed to have been able to be a part of something so special. Other than my Peru trip, I spent my time getting ready for the football season by working out with a close football friend and fellow team captain. I also reread two of the books I plan on using for my Senior Thesis Paper which I am just officially beginning this month. zona: What different languages have you learned in school? bryson: In seventh grade, I began taking Latin, and immediately fell in love with the language and the idea of language itself. I took it again in eighth grade, and when it came time to choose our language for our high school years, I chose to continue taking two more years of Latin and then finish by taking two years of Attic Greek. In total, I will have four years of Latin and two years of Greek under my belt by the time I graduate. Towards the end of our fourth year of Latin, we became fluent enough to actually just read original works, such as The Aeneid with ease. It is a very cool experience to read some of the greatest book ever written in their original language, because there is so much you miss in a translation. zona: Tell us about your Senior Thesis? bryson: Each Great Hearts Academy senior works year-long on one paper, their “magnus opus” so to speak. They are to discuss and define one of the “Great Ideas” using three “Great Books” as texts. This is not some research paper or book report. Each thesis is a step into the world of immortal concepts that shape and define mankind throughout time, such as Justice, Freedom, Equality, Truth, Goodness, Virtue, and Beauty. Throughout the course of the journey at
Bryson
Mesa Prep, students learn to love knowledge and these “Great Ideas”, by following in the footsteps of Aristotle, Immanuel Kant, Plutarch, Thomas Aquinas, Johannes Kepler and many more. The Senior thesis is each senior’s search for discovery. I am planning on writing my Senior Thesis on the topic of Happiness and its relationship to Truth and Virtue. I believe the purpose of mankind’s existence is to find joy, so what good would it be if we did not know what true happiness is and how it is achieved? I will enjoy writing on a topic that is close to my heart, using books that I reread over and over again. I will be using Aristotle’s Ethics, and Epictetus’ Enchiridion, along with one other book that I have yet to determine. zona: Out of all the extra curricular activities you have, which one is your favorite and why? bryson: To be honest, I love them all! I’m so grateful that I am able to do so much without getting burnt out. I feel closer to everyone I work with because of all the activities I do, and I get much more out of church, school, friends, and family. In past years, I did more, but I was unable to do them all, so I was forced to choose the best, and I feel that this is where I am at. zona: Your also an Eagle Scout, tell us about your Eagle Service project? bryson: For my Eagle Scout Service project, I chose to help my school. It was a three-fold project. Mesa Prep was growing fast, and a couple hundred new lockers were scheduled to be delivered. I organized groups of people to unload the shipments, check for damages, and then move and install them in the proper locations. Also, our office manager was busy with a death in her family, so I offered to help cover her large summer project of changing all the locker combinations on all the existing lockers. Along with this, the extra volunteers that came to help out cleaned the insides of each locker. The third and final part of my project was building and installing wooden backpack racks for all the classrooms, so that the increasing amount of backpacks did not become a fire or safety hazard. In total, I put in 40 hours, with other volunteers donating a grand total of 100 hours of their own time. zona: What do you to for fun? bryson: I love spending time with my family and friends! I have incredible friends and family that uplift and recharge me. We love planning fun activities that are adventurous and non-typical. We’ve made giant slip-n-slides, gone on sunrise hikes, had iron chef cook-offs, supported each other at games and concerts, had music jam sessions, made sushi together, gone four-
wheeling in the desert, had planned food fights, made sand castles at the park, backyard dance parties, pool volleyball games, Ultimate Frisbee tournaments, and fun date nights. I am almost always listening to music or making music. I love to cook gourmet food for my friends and family and being challenged by limited ingredients. I enjoy finding problems and fixing them on my own, whether it be that I have no place in my closet for shoes, and make a wooden rack to hang on the door, or it be that the pool pump is not working and needs a little duct tape. I also have a side project I work on when I get a chance. For a couple years, I have been covering my bedroom walls and ceiling with thousands of pictures, artwork, awards, sentimental objects, and anything else I can find a way to attach to the walls. The end result is quite amazing and very cool. Its something that I put a lot of time into, and acts like a living growing scrapbook and autobiography. I enjoy making something truly mine by inputting work and making it grander.
zona: What type of activites are you involved in at Mesa Prep? McKenzie: This year, I am going to be involved in student mentoring, speech and debate, Junior State of America, choir, robotics, basketball, yearbook, and creative writing. zona: Which one would you say is your favorite? McKenzie: It’s a contest between student mentoring and speech and debate. Mentoring gives me the opportunity to help new students transition at our school, which I enjoy doing because I love being able to show students the best things about Mesa Prep. Speech and debate events vary from Lincoln Douglas debate to drama interpretation, so I can compete with hundreds of other kids from different schools in political, philosophical, academic, and dramatic events, which are all some of my favorite things! zona: You have a radio talk show, how cool, can you tell us a little bit about that? McKenzie: America Today is my online radio show where I talk about my opinions on current political and social issues. It’s
McKenzie very interesting because the stories and lessons inferred from them are so applicable to everyone, and listeners can explore their moral and political beliefs. zona: You’re a senior this year, what are your college plans? McKenzie: I’m applying to colleges in Southern California and Chicago. I want to study chemical engineering and physics, but I still want to remain as active as I am in high school with different clubs. And I hope to take acting classes in the city I go to college. zona: Are you sad to leave high school? McKenzie: I’m sad to leave my classmates because I’m so close to them. I am also going to miss the truly unique ambiance of Mesa Prep. Still, I’m excited to begin my life as an adult and experience new things and places. zona: What has been your favorite achievement so far in your life? McKenzie: I can’t think of one particular achievement, but I would say my Junior year had to be my best year because of all of the things that happened in clubs, basketball, drama class, and beyond. zona: If you could have any super power, what would it be and why? McKenzie: Telekinesis. I love the idea of being able to move any object with just my mind. Super strength or super speed would both be extremely helpful for basketball, though! zona: What position do you play in basketball? Have you been watching the Olympic basketball team? Who is your favorite NBA Player? McKenzie: I play either a guard or a point guard, depending on the time passed by in the game. The Olympic basketball teams have both been awesome this year. The men won by 33 against Australia! My favorite NBA player would have to be either LeBron James or Dwyane Wade of the Miami Heat. zona: Anything that you would like our readers to know about you? Any shout-outs? McKenzie: I would like to give a shout-out to Mr. G and Mr. Wagner for giving Bryson and me this opportunity, a shout-out to Matt for supporting me and being my best friend, and my entire 12th grade class for being the best people I know! zona: Did you do anything exciting over the summer? McKenzie: The most interesting thing I did this summer was starting filming for my friend Giulian’s movie. Giulian wrote the script based on Edgar Allan Poe’s Annabel Lee and Alesana’s The Emptiness. I’m playing Annabel Lee, the lead female character.
