tructural Integration Therapy (SIT) is the most expedient form of treatment in the bodywork industry. When someone is in pain, they are in need of immediate help. They know something must change and it must change now. The relationship within their own body must be re-cultivated to understand their chronic holding patterns. They must do an inventory on how they sit, stand, walk or carry objects. They must develop a fundamental sense of awareness for how they have gotten to the point where they are considering a treatment to get them out of dysfunction. The neuromuscular workings of the body have become decreased; such as, limited range of motion in an arm or shoulder or, the inability to sit for a long period of time as you have done for many years. What has happened is your structure, as it relates to gravity, is being pulled down and areas of compensation have taken hold. This is similar to how a suspension bridge is structured. Cables are strong everywhere except for a few tension cables. This will then put pressure on the rest of the structure eventually putting cracks in the bridge itself. These areas need to be addressed before it compromises the body. The indications for treatment are back pain or neck pain and when you cannot

move a shoulder as you once did or have pain in the knees. These areas need room to move in around the joint. This is Structural Integration Therapy, with deep stretching and slow, even, deep movement. Therapy including the use of therapist’s elbows, fingers and fists heat up the tissue which then becomes soft. It is normally very hard and difficult to move, stretch and lengthen. During this therapy, it becomes very pliable and easy to change (or more fluid). This process is called thixatropy. It usually takes one, or possibly two, visits for the body to adapt to the treatment, allowing the therapy to reorient the muscle and the connective tissue to their normal length. Once this is accomplished there will be increased circulation and strength with greater range of motion. There will be decreased toxins and pain and increased functioning of the area. Structural Integration Therapy is not a massage, it is body work and it works quickly. The key prerequisite is that the patient will need to be accepting to follow “homework” given by the therapist. This may include yogic stretches determined for treatment and duration. Noticeable improvement in symptoms took place in usually two to five sessions. The onset of treatment includes evaluation of the body for 30 minutes

to determine the change needed for the body. Based on this information, a protocol treatment procedure is formulated for the client once a week. During the time of treatment it is advisable to increase one’s protein intake as this is the same as a physical workout. There will be tissue that is broken down as if one had worked out. The body is in need of normal amounts of protein for carrying out the functions of normal body activities. When in therapy, the body will use large amounts of protein to rebuild the area to bring the body to homeostasis or natural healing of itself. Finally a key component is how you are breathing. Breathing correctly is the paramount ingredient to one’s recovery. One interesting fact is where you feel the pain or dysfunction is not necessarily where it is originating from. The therapist can tell by his/her training and practice what area’s of the body need to be addressed to return you to better health. This modality stands on its own because it directly changes the body at the time of therapy. Think it. Visualize it. Breathe it. And watch change happen very naturally.
