A New Year Brings New ... Tax Tips? I

t’s that time of year again… tax time! Groan. You have probably already been receiving year-end reporting forms and thinking about when to schedule your tax appointment. In order to make this dreaded task a little more bearable, and not let April sneak up on you again this year, we have compiled some tips to help you organize your taxes: 1. Don’t lose any of the forms you receive in the mail. This information will go on your tax forms you send to the IRS and it will be much easier to sort through this paperwork than to pay a tax preparer to gather all of this information again. Also, review all bank statements to make sure you have reported all income that you have received in 2011. You must report all taxable income even if you did not receive a form from the payer. 2. Don’t forget to claim deductions! Compile all of these into categories, such as donations, medical, taxes and miscellaneous. Locate receipts and cancelled checks and total everything together for each category. These totals will go into a summary of tax-deductible items. File away all of these records and save them in the event of a future tax audit. 3. Hold on to certain records for longer than three years. You should keep prior tax returns, payment of taxes and basis of property. Records that relate to any property you own,

including improvements, should be kept as long as you own the property. 4. Your goal should not be to receive a big, fat check from the government. Better planners get nothing back because they have been getting a “refund” distributed over the past year with every paycheck. If you want to be paid over the year as well, simply increase the number of exemptions in your W-4 for the coming year. 5. And finally, the most overlooked tax deductions are in your new home. Interest paid on your mortgage is tax deductible, within limits, and your mortgage lender will charge you a variety of fees, one called “points”, which can be deducted as well. If you take out a loan to make home improvements, you can also deduct the interest, with no dollar limit, but it must be considered a “capital improvement”. This is an improvement that increases your home’s value, prolongs its life or adapts it to new uses. Property taxes, a home office, selling costs and moving costs due to a new job, can all be considered deductions as well, within reason.
