Selecting A Contractor O

ur home, for the majority of us, is the most important asset we have. When we decide to make a repair, or even a home addition, we want to know that our expectations are being met and our home is in safe hands. To help with this process, I have compiled a checklist that every homeowner needs to make sure they are choosing the right contractor for their project.

• When meeting with contractors, ask to see samples of their past projects and a list of references. Ask questions and make sure you can communicate easily with them, as this will make a difference throughout the entire project. Once you have all of the estimates, compare them in a minimum of four areas: price, quality of work, details in the materials and the time it will take to be completed. If one of them differs from the others drastically in one area, make sure to question the contractor on why that is. A reputable contractor will be able to supply you with a contract, a guaranteed price, project specifications, a work schedule, a written warranty, a homeowner’s right to inspect/approve the work, and for larger projects, a drawing for construction.

• Take advantage of referrals from trusted sources – family, friends and coworkers – while also paying mind to local companies that advertise in magazines and newspapers, hold a good standing with the Better Business Bureau and are licensed, bonded and insured. Never hire someone who shows up at your door trying to solicit a job from you. Legitimate contractors do not do business this way. • Have a clear plan of what you want done, and what you don’t want done, to provide prospective contractors with. Try to write out every step of the project and what you want the completed project to look like. Make sure all of the contractors – you should select three to five that specialize in the work you want done – each receive the same copy of your project. They will then be able to supply you with a written estimate of what it will cost. Normally estimates are free.

If you follow these guidelines throughout the process you can feel comfortable that your project will be done correctly and will be carried through exactly how you envisioned it. Enjoy your next project!
