Transforming Your New Home into a Green Home E

verything and everyone is “going green” nowadays, and it’s not just about recycling your glass bottles anymore! After all, it saves you and your family money, so what could be better than that? This month we will focus on tips to make the “reduce, reuse, recycle” catchphrase a little easier to execute.

Energy Star logo, which can save you over $100 on your annual utility bills. Energy Star’s standards are set by the Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy. While you’re at it, lower the temperature on your hot water heater and wash your laundry in cold water.

1. Whether you have a new build or you have purchased a resale, making sure your home is energy efficient is the first step to green living. You will want to have your home checked for drafty doors and windows, leaks in your ventilation ducts, and the possibility of installing a radiant barrier in your attic. You also want to make sure your SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) on your air conditioning unit is high because the higher it is, the more efficiently it will run. This will also improve your indoor air quality. Another good thing to know is the U-factor on your windows. The U-factor typically falls between 0.2 and 1.2 and the lower the value, the greater its resistance to heat and the more insulation it will provide.

4. Try switching over your cleaning products next. Eco-friendly cleaners use more plant based formulas and natural scents. They are still effective in killing germs and are better for your health as well.

2. Replacing your old, incandescent bulbs with compact, fluorescent

light bulbs is a very cheap way to make your home eco-friendly. They use 75 percent less energy and are known to last up to 10 times longer!
